Re: Mathieson/McMath

Hello,

I've got a database of pre-1880 McMaths and Mathiesons of all spellings in
Glasgow and surrounding counties including ARL. I've got a record for Duncan
McMath marrying Janet Mitchell from Saddell & Skipness OPR on 18 May 1847
(not Feb), but no birth of a Robert in ARL OPRs, so his baptism was possibly
not registered, or the were non-conformists. I should say I got the
Banns/Marriage info from an LDS microfiche rather than from the actual OPR
microfilm, so it will be worth checking the actual OPR entry in case
additional info is given.

I've got more info on Malcolm Mathieson/McMath and Rose McLean:

Banns/Marriage:
per OPR in Campbeltown 17 June 1824

Family (all per OPR):
Archibald c Campbeltown 3 Apr 1825, presumed d before Jan 1832
Margaret c Campbeltown 21 Mar 1826 m John McRae d 31 May 1885 (per Glasgow
Poor Relief)
Duncan c Campbeltown 6 Mar 1828 presumed d before June 1829
Duncan c Campbeltown 19 June 1829 m Janet Mitchel 1847 emigrated to CAN
Archibald b Glasgow 29 Jan 1832
Catherine b Glasgow 8 Jul 1834
Rose c Glasgow 28 Apr 1836

Glasgow Poor Relief:
Mitchell Library ref D-HEW 10/1/7 p233 #35473
4 Sep 1854 Margaret Mathieson or McRae, age 28, b Back St, Campbeltown,
admitted to Cholera Hospital. Husband John McRae, b Ireland, d Glasgow 18
months previously. Applicant has no family & is a person of irregular habits
with no settled residence. Previously lived in Dundee (2 yrs) and
Campbeltown (8 mths). Father, Malcolm Mathieson, occupation porter, lives
somewhere in Glasgow, but not known where. For proof of applicant's birth in
Campbeltown, refer to Mrs Millan, her aunt, at Kirk St, Campbeltown, or
uncle Peter Mathieson, sawyer, at same street.

Mitchell Library ref D-HEW 10/4/37 p71 #B50585
28 July 1868 Margaret Mathieson or McLean, 35 Gallowgate, b Campbeltown,
widow aged 35, protestant religion, wholly disabled due to D/Ts. Husband
John McRae, b IRL, occupation tailor, d 9 tears previously. Applicant's
father: Malcolm Mathieson, publican , mother Rose McLean, both deceased.

Mitchell Library ref D-HEW 10/1/45 p211
5 Apr 1872 Margaret Mathieson, resident King St on a stair, b Campbeltown,
single, age 42, prostitute, protestant religion, debilitated through
intemperance. Duaghter of Malcolm Mathieson, policeman, who d in City
Poorhouse, and Rose McLean, also deceased (ref Poor Relief application
3.11.100). Applicant has been resident at King St 4 months and 7 days,
previously at 113 Stockwell St, with cousin Mrs Kelly, 10 years, and before
that several years at the same address with her father. Updates to this
case: 12 Apr 1872 sent to Poorhouse, but left later. 10 Feb 1873 certified
with syphilis and sent to Lock Hospital then 12 Feb 1873 to Poorhouse. 11
Dec 1884 applied for relief from 37 High St (residence of Mrs Kelly). Since
last application has been resident at 37 High St for 1 month and 10 days;
prior to that at 30 Princes St with Mrs Drysdale for 12 years. Various
applications in 1884/85. 6 April 1885 re-applied from 37 High St and was
certified with Dropsy. She d 31 May 1885 in City Poorhouse.

MY NOTES:
I haven't been able to trace a Poor Relief ref 3.11.100, nor does a Rose
McMath/Mathieson M/S McLean appear in the Mitchell Library's computerised
index of Poor Relief applications.

Margaret's application (ref D-HEW 10/1/7 p233 #35473 above) refers to an
uncle Peter McMath, a sawyer in Kirk St, Campbeltown. I was able to identify
this man, who was m to Elizabeth Glasgow, and from his death certificate in
1860 (ref 1860 deaths GRO 507 #116) gives his parents as Archibald
Mathieson, farmer, and Catherine McPhail or McFaill (both deceased). It
follows that they were also the parents of Malcolm Mathieson who married
Rose McLean.

My record for Archibald M and Catherine McFaill shows marriage "abt 1768"
(per IGI) and I can find no OPR record for it, although there is a marriage
of an Archibald McMath to a Katherine Fauls in the Campbeltown OPR on 20 Feb
1769. I could find no other trace anywhere of a couple by these names and
suspect that Katherine's surname was subjected to the same anglicisation
which later converted all the McMaths to Mathiesons. It appears from OPR
entries for this family that Archibald was also known as Patrick and its
anglicised from Peter. Their family, all born/christened in Campbeltown was:
Patrick c 28 Nov 1769 (source OPR), presumed d before 1788
John b 8 June 1771 c 10 June 1770 (source OPR), presumed d before 1772
John c 24 Jan 1772 (source OPR)
Neill c 23 Apr 1774 (source OPR), presumed d bef 1786.
Mary c 12 Aug 1777 (source OPR), m Donald Fleming, d Campbeltown 17 Mar
1861.
Katherin c 20 Aug 1779 (source OPR).
Archibald c 23 Jan 1782 (source OPR)
Margaret b Apr 1784 c 27 Aug 1784 (source OPR)
Neill c 17 Jul 1786 (source OPR)
Patrick b 14 Dec 1788 (source OPR), m Elizabeth Glasgow 30 Oct 1809
Edinburgh Canongate, d Campbeltown 17 june 1860.
Donald b 18 Jun 1791 (source OPR)
Malcom b 8 May 1794 (source OPR), m Rose McLean 17 Jun 1824 in Campbeltown.

In addition, the IGI shows another birth of Angus b Apr 1784, c 27 Apr 1784,
who may be a twin of Margaret above. She wwasn't christened until August, so
may been too ill/weak to be christened shortly after birth. If that were the
case and she were one of twins, it might explain the non-registration of
Angus in the OPR. The parents might have been too preoccupied with a sick
child to attend to non-mandatory formalities.

That will take you back 2 generations before your Duncan M and janet
Mitchell who emigrated to Ontario. It's unlikely that I'll unearth anything
to get us further back, as there's very little recorded in the Kintyre area
of ARL before the 1760s. I hope this will help you.

Regards,

Ken Mathieson
Mathieson/McMath

My gggrandparents, Duncan McMath (father Malcolm) and Janet Mitchel, were married in Argyll, Scotland. Their marriage was registered in Saddell/Skipness and Brackley, Carradale. They were married Feb. 1847. I would appreciate any help in finding their respective families in Argyll Scotland and Ontario Canada. I believe they had a son Robert born in Scotland before coming to Ontario, Canada. The children born in Ontario were Malcolm, Mary, and Margaret.
I believe Duncan's mother was a McLean (Rose)?
In various records I have found in Ontario their last name has been spelled:
Mathison, Matheson, Mathieson, Mathewson.
Peter Mathieson

Peter was born in Scotland in 1867 and he married Janel MacPhail. 4 sons were born in late 1890's including Donald who was born in 1902 in Rutherglen, Scotland. Family migrated and settled briefly in Ottawa. The emigrated again to Buffalo, NY. Peter deserted the family and was said to have moved to Western US or Western Canada. They appeared in 1920 US Census in Buffalo. Janet died in Buffalo about 1940.
Sons Robert, John, Peter and Donald spent time in Buffalo before they married and had own families. I married Janet Matheson. Her father Donald decided to use the slightly shortened Matheson instead of Mathieson.
Need info on siblings of Janet and closure on Peter as to where and when he died.
Thanks!!

Hi there, my Great Grandfather was born in Portree, and later lived in Ayr. He lived in Dublin for a while and his first son was born there. My grandfather was born in 1892, in Ayr as far as I can tell, and left Scotland "as a young man". He had 6 or 7 siblings and surely their families are still around. Would love to find them.

Help needed on Donald Kenneth Mathieson

Hello, I am hoping someone will be able to give me some tips on where to look for an Irish birth with not many clues.
Donald Kenneth Mathieson was born C1844 son of Kenneth Mathieson and Margaret (nee Brownbill).
Whilst their other 3 children were born prior to 1841 in Liverpool, Donald was born in Ireland. I'm sure if I can find Donald's birth it will lead me to more information about his father Kenneth.
By 1850 they were back in Liverpool as father Kenneth died in 1850 but I don't know why they went to Ireland in the first place. Margaret and her daughters are on the 1841 census but no sign of Kenneth so I have no origin for him?
Donald appears on 1851,1861,1871,1881 censuses and birth place of Ireland is given on first 2, Scotland on 3rd and Liverpool on last one. He was blind on last one though so form would have been filled in by his wife.

Please can anyone offer me any hope on this brick wall?

Andrea

Hi Mary,

I don't think I'm connected to your line, although I do have Ayrshire Mathieson lines. However I do have a lot of information on Math*sons of all spellings in Glasgow and surrounding counties, including Ayrshire. My information is all on paper records, so finding your G-GF John will be simplified if you can tell me his wife Elizabeth's maiden surname. Do you know it?

Regards,

Ken Mathieson

My grandfather (John Mathieson), left Scotland for South Africa as a 'young man", he was the son of John and Elizabeth Mathieson, and was born in 1892, in Ayr. He had a number of siblings, some of the names I can recall are: Ronald, Angus, Justina. There were more siblings, but I have lost my cencus record.

My great grandfather, was born in Portree, and was a ship master. He was married to Elizabeth in Dublin, and Ronald, their first son, was born there.

I am very keen to find out if I have any relatives.

Thank you

Hi Robert, I have met you at your father's funeral in 1986. I tried to contact you last year some time & did phone & speak to John. I gave him our e-mail address & have not heard from him again. He doesn't seem interested in his ancestors. My husband is Robert Finn, son of Helen nee Mathieson, sister to your father Robert. I have struggled to find info on R A Mathieson & his ancestors. I have found some but would love to get what info you have. We now live in New Zealand, have done since 1994. Please e-mail me - rsfinn@xtra.co.nz
Regards,
Sue

The volume includes a hand-drawn pencil sketch of a Scottish Highlander, probably drawn by Jane. Her middle initial is "G". Could this be your ancestor?

Best, James

Matheson / Mathieson Surname Spelling

I'm afraid your notion of how this surname, was, is, or should be spelled is not exactly correct.

I descend from a line in Mathiesons that originated in Lochalsh. There is a direct line of descent from Murdoch Buidhe Mathieson to my great-grandfather. In my family, we have always used the MathIEson spelling.

How the name is spelled today has little relationship to how it was spelled in the past. In the course of researching my ancestors, I had occasion to go through the city directories for Glasgow from 1800 to 1830, the IE spelling was the most common.

I realize the the Clan now claims the MathEson spelling it the correct one, but it was not always that way, this spelling has only been considered correct for about 125 years.

If you have seen, or had access to History of the Mathesons, Appendix B says, "The English surname Matheson attaches itself to the Clan Mathan simply on account of similarity of sound... It appears as Mathewson, Mattinson, Mathieson (as Duncan the missionary always wrote it), and finally Matheson."

Duncan Mathieson, the Manchester Town Missionary, was my ggg-grandfather, depending on where they were, he and his sons used the first three spellings, and sometimes Madison, but never Matheson. Duncan was himself a genealogist, most of the information, after page 77, in the 1900 edition of History of the Mathesons is based on his research.

Marleen Van Horne

Hi Kevin,

I'm not so sure about the Hong Kong connection bearing in mind that had our ancestor been directly connected with Jardine Matheson, he might have insisted upon the "correct" spelling of the family name. I am currently in Hong Kong where all references are minus the "i".

It's a nice idea but I fear somewhat more romantic than actual fact.

Regards, RM.

PS.

I am trying to trace a family line back from a Mathieson family in Southampton to the Mathiesons in Scotland. My GGGf was called John Mathieson and I have census information showing him boarding in Southampton in 1861. His Occupation was a Boilermaker and his place of birth is listed as Glasgow. He married a Caroline Mary Welch Jeffery in 1862 and on their marriage certificate he lists his father as Alexander Mathieson, occupation Stone Mason. John was born in approx 1834, so I imagine Alexander would have been born sometime before 1816. Any help would be much appreciated.

Duncan Mathieson, Huntly & Perth, Scotland

From the Aberdeen Journal, dated Wednesday, September 22, 1869

DEATH OF MR DUNCAN MATHIESON, PERTH – We deeply regret to have this week to record the death of Mr Mathieson, who has been for a good many years so well known in all parts of the country for his piety, and his zealous evangelistic labours for the good of his fellow men. Mr Mathieson was a native of Huntly, and instead of going to college as his parents intended, he took a strong liking for mechanics, and served his apprenticeship as a stonecutter here. He then removed to Edinburgh, and while working at his profession there, became an ardent student of the best authors; and having good capacity for gaining knowledge, he speedily acquired a most valuable fund of intellectual lore. He was naturally of a highly moral and religious tinge of character. On his mother’s death he returned to his native town. That event formed the great turning point of his life, and for months afterwards he was in a very distressed mental condition. After his conversion, his mind took a new direction, and he began to hold religious meetings in and around Huntly. He then bought a printing press, and printed tracts and leaflets. In this way he issued 60 different tracts of about 10,000 copies each. The late Duchess of Gordon employed him as a missionary in this district until the Crimean was broke out, when he was appointed missionary to the British army, more especially in connection with the Highland regiments; he had also charge of distributing bibles to the Sardinian soldiers. His devoted and unwearying exertions in these capacities were highly spoken of by Hedley Vicars and Captain Vandeleur; but they were not without their evil results upon himself, as the close of the war found his constitution severely broken down. He then spent some time in Egypt and in Italy in distributing bibles, and in other mission work. On his return to Scotland he travelled through all parts of the country preaching almost daily, and never losing an opportunity of doing good. It was mainly through his instrumentality that the open-air religious meetings in this quarter were organised and carried on. Notwithstanding his impaired constitution, and the multifarious labours he undertook, he continued to edit the Herald of Mercy – a publication well known throughout the length and breadth of the land. In 1867 he was seized with diabetes, and was unable to do much public work since. Last summer he visited the warms springs at Carlsbad in Austria, but derived no lasting benefit, and succumbed to the fatal disease at Perth on Thursday last. His letters to friends, and his last hours in his family were like his life – peaceful, resigned. He was conscious to the end, and his dying words were – “Come, Lord Jesus, come quickly.” Many Christian friends in all parts of the country will deeply lament his death. – Huntly Express.

Notes:

According to Duncan’s death certificate he was married to Mary Milne and he died 16 September 1869 at 16 Keir Street, Bridgend, Perth (Scotland), age 44 years. The writing on the death certificate is not very good, but his parents were a Colin Matheson (Post Office Clerk) & Christian Matheson ms Smith (deceased). The informant of the death was a Donald Shearer, brother-in-law, Huntly.

Father Colin Matheson died 26 November 1870 aged 86 years at Huntly, Aberdeenshire. Again writing on the death certificate is not very good, fathers’ name listed as John Matheson, Farmer, mothers name might be Susan Matheson ms McRae. Duncan Shearer, son-in-law, was the informant.

Duncan Shearer married Jessie Mathieson 23 December 1862, Huntly.
Hi Linda,

Thanks for your email. Unfortunately I've not come across a Benjamin Sloan in my research at all. I've been over to Antrim area once although I didn't have a chance to do much research there. My Irish links are from names given as parents on Scottish death cerficates and places of origin from Scottish census returns. If I ever find anything more definite I'll be sure to email you. Sorry I can't be of more help just now.

Best of luck with your search.

George Hebenton

Hello George,

I am interested to know if you have any information on Benjamin Sloan baptised 17 Apr 1807 at the Donegore Presbyterian Church. William is listed as his father (the family lived on the townland of Tobergill) in IGI. He married Jane Scott and ended up living in Hastings County Ontario, Canada.

I am seeking his siblings or any information on him or his father.

Thanks in advance.
