Re: Walter Matney Info update.

On Walter Mattingly, I have his birth year as 1738, but I have seen some list it as high as 1745. However, most of the people who have researched Walter for some time give 1738.

Anyhow, what I found was that Richard Mattingly Sr. and Mark Mattingly were brothers. There father was John Mattingly, who was the son of Cesar Mattingly. John was a brother to Thomas(2) Mattingly.

The William Mattingly, I believe, in the deed was John Baptist Mattingly's son, William, and John Baptist Mattingly was a brother to Richard Sr., and Mark. William was born in 1747, just 9 years younger than Walter.

John Mattingly was born in 1690 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. He died in 1744. He would have been only 54 years old. I am thinking that Walter was most probably the youngest son of John Mattingly, and John's three sons bought those 400 acres each from William, their nephew.

The William Mattingly in mention is next to the oldest William I have read about. This William Mattingly was born in 1747. His Parents are John Baptist Mattingly and Elizabeth Brewer. The other older William, was William B. Mattingly, and was born in 1741 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. He died about Apr 1819 in Washington County, Kentucky. His Parents were Ignatius I Mattingly and Sarah Unknown. Him being Ignatius I Mattingly's son, and Ignatius' father was Thomas(2), Cesar's brother.

The above says that William B. Mattingly died about Apr. 1819 in Washington County, Kentucky, however, I wonder if this could have been Washington County, Virginia where Walter had moved to? At one time, Kentucky was part of Virginia. Is there any proof that this William is buried in Kentucky, a headstone or grave? Kentucky was cleaved from Virginia in 1792.

Given Walter's birth year, it was only 73 years away from when Thomas(1) came to Maryland from England, bringing Cesar and Thomas(2) with him. However, some say that Cesar was born here, except ships records say he came over with his father Thomas(1) and his mother Elizabeth, his brother Thomas (2), plus two sisters.

=======================================

Name: Casar Mattingly (Ceasar)
Arrival: 1665
Place: Maryland
Source Publication Code: 2524.55
Primary Immigrant: Mattingly, Casar
Annotation: Date and port of arrival. Also listed was a Richard Mattinglee with 1 tithable, 0 slaves, 1 horse, 0 cattle and land - yes.

>From "Washington Co, VA Surveys & Commissioners Certificates 1781-1797":

Surveyed from Walter Mattingly assignee of Aaron Lewis 134 acres of land in Washington Co in the Rich Valley on the north side of the Laurel fork a branch of the North Fork..... dated 13 Apr 1785.

Paul Mattingly
Atlanta, GA

=======================================

Let me know what you all think on this, as it is not proof that Walter Mattingly was John Mattingly's son. However, when property was deeded and willed at the time, generally immediate family received it.

Best,

Will Matney
Proctorville, Ohio

Walter Matney Info

I ran across some information about some deeds for Walter Matney (Mattingly at the time), while he was still in Halifax Co., VA, just before he was in the Revolutionary War. This originated from Paul Mattingly in Atlanta, GA.

=====================

Halifax Co, VA
Entry Record Book 1770-1796 Land Records:

18 Oct 1787 William Matherley, 126A on Bars of Fall Creek, beg Smith's corner, desc. follows.

Mattenley (Matenly): Mark, Richard, Walter
#41 Mar 1778 Mark Mattenly, 400A beg at poplar in his plantation,
desc follows.
#55, 15 Aug 1785 Richard Matenly, 300A on head of Strawbberry Creek.
#35 1773 Walter Mattenley, 400A joining Constant Perkins &
Peter Perkins Line.

=====================

Now, this may be what all we, the descendants of Walter have been trying to place as Walter(1)'s father. This shows William Mattingly giving around 200 acres each to Richard, Mark, and Walter Mattingly.

=====================

1778-80 Tax Lists:
Farris: Wm. Lomax, Randolph, Harmer & Co. Mayo: Valentine.
Lindsay: John. Cooper: John, Thomas, Joseph. Parker: Samuel, John. Mattingley, Walter, Richard.

=====================

We know that Walter was there, but sold the property and moved to Montgomery co. Va and then fought in the Revolutionary War. Also, he had sold some property, and from a deed for Pittsylvania Co., and not knowing how to write, used an "A" as his mark. See below;

=====================

>From "Pittsylvania Co, VA Deeds 1774-1778":

Page 202. Apr 12, 1776 from Walter Mattinly of Pittsylvania to Sylvester Adams, for 60 lbs sterling, 394 acres in Pittsylvania on both sides of Sandy River, and bounded by Kennon's old line, the river just below the falls, his own line. The land was "sruveyed by George Lumkins by patent"
dated Aug 15, 1764, & by several conveyances came into the possession of Wallter Mattinly, as by Halifax County Court will more full appear.

Singed Walter (A his mark) Mattenly. Wit - George Ross, George Adams, Mary Williams, Thomas Fletcher, Recorded Apr 25, 1776.

=====================

Now, by him using an "A" as his mark, could his middle name possibly have been Alexander, and not Brooks as some think? The reason why is, that he had a grandson, and a great grandson named Alexander. They were from his son Walter(2)'s side. Some call this Walter, Walter Jr., but I always say Walter(2), because he had a son named Walter too.

As a note, look at how many mis-spellings for Mattingly there were on a single deed.

If anyone could help with this, and possibly look into William, Richard and Mark Mattingly, we now may know who Walter's parents were.

Thanks,

Will Matney
Proctorville, OH.

Sorry, I forgot to add that in my original post, I said Rake Henry was Henry Sr.'s boy, and that's not the case. At the time, I had not researched this branch of the Matney's thoroughly.

Alexander and Jame Matney's family can be found in the Lick Creek, District 4, 1870 census for what is now, Pike County, Ky. The children in order were;

Louisa
Henry
James
Nelson
Margaret
Caroline
Alexander
I, too, am from the Carrel B Matney line. I found a Carroll B Matney in a Civil War listing here..
http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm
He fought for the Union in the Illinois Infantry & was captured. I know that was not my Carrel B Matney because anyone who would name their son JEFFERSON DAVIS MATNEY (my G-Grandfather) would not have fought for the Union, LOL
Hope this might help you.

What do you know about your Carrel B Matney and John Matney? My grandfather was John H Matney born in 1834 and according to what my father told me he had a brother named C B Matney. Mine came to Cowley County Kansas in 1876. I am unable to determine for sure anything about who my grandfather's parents were. My C B was married to Mary and she is buried in Maple City, Cowley, Kansas. My grandparents are also buried there.

Matney/Wells/Shumate connection

My father was Marion Isom Shumate. I have tracked his parents to being Charles F Shumate and Mary Ester Owensby of Missouri.
However, on my dad's death certificate from Ok, it lists his mother's maiden name as Matney. Going back to Mo. census, I found A Marion I Shumate and Florence Shumate (his sister) living in Ozark, Mo.around 1910 with a George Wells age 52 and a Mary J. Wells age 40. M.I. Shumate's age at that time was about 11 and Florence's age about 13. This would be about right. In 1910, their 3 yr. old sister Bernice died from accidental poisoning from Belladonna (listed on death cert). I am wondering if my father and aunt were sent to the Wells to live and if they were any relation, and if Mary J Wells's maiden name was Matney, thus the mix-up on my dad's death certificate. Every time I think I've got it sorted out, I find another avenue to go down. If anyone has any info that will help me in this maze, I would love to hear from you.

According to information I have been able to find William Matney and Phoebe Sluder was my great grandparents. My grandfather was John H. Matney and from what I have been able to recall from my father when we went to the Maple City KS cemetery CB Matney was a brother to John H. I found a marriage license for C B and it lists his parents as William and Phoebe Sluder. I also, recall that my father did say his grandfather's name was William.

Please let me hear from you.

My cousin bought a lot of boxes from a rummage sale, and in one of them was some personal papers and a family bible belonging to Homer Matney. His high school diploma, from Orange Indiana, says he graduated in 1936. We would like to get these back to someone in his family.
