Thank you for the reply. Perhaps your grandfather would remember the father of this family who was Luciano Mattei Sanchez. I believe one of his sons died in 2003. His name was Rafael Mattei Zaragoza. Luciano's wife, who was a Zaragoza, also had children with Santos Vega in the late 1920's

The Hospital in Yauco, PR was named after the brother of my Great Grandfather Nestor Rodriguez Mattei who died in 1965 at about age 80. According to my Grandfather who is still alive at the current age of 105, Nestor was born in Spain in 1885 and immigrated to Puerto Rico, then known as Porto Rico. Surname Mattei apparently has Italian Roots, then again many Spaniards and Italians share common interactive History. I'll see if the name Zaragoza can be found in any of the family albums, etc. You never know, we could be distant cousins. best Wishes with your search.

Loretta - what a great treat to make these connections! I would love to see a picture of the grave. Thanks so much for offering to share. Italo & Diomira's son, Giovanni, was my grandfather. He had four sons, all still living, Innocente, Italo, John (my father) and Robert. Giovanni emigrated to America sometime around 1915 and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. He met my grandmother, Ida Liva, at an Italian-American Picnic in Cincinnati. Also living in Cincinnati was his brother, Michele who married Marina (I do not have her last name.) They were childless. It is said that my cousin, Julianna, (Innocente's daughter) was the first female Mattei in four generations. But the men still greatly outnumber the women - these four sons had 20 children between them and there are only six girls! Have a wonderful visit in Italy - Barb Mattei-Smith

Hi Barbara, what a lovely surprise to hear from a distant relation (actually my husband's relation). I have been trying to gather information for some years and have had some success constructing a family tree, actually we are leaving on Sunday for a holiday to Italy including Gromignana. Diomira was the sister of Ottavia Marsili, she was John's (my husband's) great grandmother. I have a photo of Italo & Diomira's grave in Gromignana if you are interested? If you have any information on your family I would very much appreciate it. I only know that Italo and Diomira had four children: Giovanni, Elio, Argentina and Michele, could you confirm this and eleborate any further. Thanking you and look forward to hearing from you again. Regards Loretta and John Mattei, Melbourne,Australia.

Hi! My name is Barbara Mattei-Smith. My father, John Mattei, was the son of Giovanni Mattei who emigrated to the US around 1915. His father, Italo Mattei was born in Gromignana in 1868 and married Diomira Marselli. Diomira was the daughter of Giovachino Marsilli, his wife's name may have been Agatha. Could it be that Franco was a brother of Giovachino?

Hi Peter, thank you so much for your last email, unfortunately John does not recall you as he was quite young when they left Gromignana, but Aurelia recalls you very well and your dear late parents, she asked me to send you her best wishes. We were in Gromignana for about six weeks this June/July, we really love it there, our eldest daughter Tania had been in Florence for three years studying at the Florence Academy of Art, we went for her graduation. She is now home visiting before returning to work in New York, she lived there five years before heading to Florence, she is a Lawyer but wanted a little break hence went to study art. We also have a daughter Jacqueline in Sydney she is a Fashion Designer and a son Paul he is the only one in Melbourne. Where do you live in the States?
Can you tell me what Hugo did for a living? there are so many Mattei's and Grisanti's who went to the States whom I have very little information about, perhaps you may remember some, I will look up the names and email you again.
Kind regards Loretta and John Mattei

Hello, Loretta. Thanks for emailing back to me. I tried to replay earlier, but apparently it did not work. So, I'm writing this message again. As I said, my mother was Massilla's and Hugo's cousin. I knew Paolo and Aurelia very well. Their son, Giocondo (John?) and I used to play together in Gromignana, before they left for Australia. Maybe John will remember me as Giuseppe, the son of Renato and Carolina Lucchesi. Massilla's brother, Hugo, used to come to Gromignana every so often to visit his relatives. He always paid a visit to us and his other cousin, Assunta Donati, who lived very closed to us. He was a great guy. My wife and I visited him in Sarasota, Florida in December 1972, during our honeymoon and we spent the New Year together. I think Hugo had two sons (I'm not sure), and I think they still live in Sarasota. Give my best to your husband and ask him if he remembers me.
Best wishes for your compilation of the Mattei's Family Tree.
Sincerely,
Peter

(Paolo was John's father his mother is Aurelia Angeli). You mention that your mother was Massilla's cousin, can you give me any other information. I have been working on a Family Tree for the Mattei family so always appreciate any further help, especially any information on Hugo. We live in Melbourne Australia. Regards Loretta.

Loretta, I came to the US from Gromignana in 1972. I knew your grandparents very well. Francesco and Massilla were related to my mother. Massilla was my mother's cousin. Her brother, Hugo, lived in Florida in the city of Sarasota. I visited him with my wife and we spent New Year's day at his house.
You said that Francesco e Massilla Mattei are your grandparents. If you are Carol, I do remember meeting you that summer at Dad's apartment in the city and I still have the photograph you gave me. I'm suprised you remembered the Medford Lakes vacation;it was a long time ago.
I'll be happy to write further to you and fill you in on what I know - I think my user name has an e-mail attached to it.
Anthony Mattei had a daughter named Nancy. I met her once when she was about 13-14. She came to Phila to spend the summer at Medford Lakes with Bobby Mattei and his wife, who have since divorced. Are you Nancy? Please if you are not do not play any kind of jokes. It would be cruel.
Thanks

Hello Dolores Carson,
My name is Patrick Dignan, I am the son of William Patrick
Dignan. He is the brother of Marguerite Dignan who married
William Joseph Mattei about 1933 in Chicago, Cook County,
Illinois. He was born 2 Jun 1902. He was the son of Giuseppe Mattei (b. 16 Jun 1877 in Collodi, Toscana, Italia)
and Bianca Burlini (b. 22 Feb 1883 in Veneri, Toscana, Italia).
William J. Mattei died 29 Dec 1975 in Long Beach, Nassau,
NY and is buried at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Gave 1, Lot 17,
Block 5 Section 14, Hillside, Illinois. I believe I am related
to Susan Sloan but not directly, it may only be by marriage
of my Aunt to William Joseph Mattei who is the son of
Giuseppe Mattei and Bianca Burlini. But I am always looking
for relations of my father's family even 'cousins removed'.
