Nancy Matthias - William Handley

Recently I found the death certificate of my great-grandfather's sister: Margaret M. (Handley) Crane.

According to that dc, Margaret had been born in 1825 in Greenbriar County, Virgina (now West Virginia). Her parents were, according to the dc, William Handley and ________ Matthias.

And, according to the dc, Margaret's middle intial {M.) also was in place of her full middle name of Matthias.

According to the 1830 census record in Fountain County, Indiana, this William Handley would have fit into the 50-60 age range, which would have had him born between 1770 and 1780.

From later records, land, probate (william died in 1833) and census, William's widow at the time of his death was Nancy. Nothing in those records indicate her maiden name. Margaret's dc is the first clue that we later researchers have had to help us in that regard.

It's not hard to find gedcoms which line our William Handley to one of John and Grizelda's grandchildren, however, most of those seem to do so on the authority of Randall J. Handly's book, and he really didn't provide any background citations for lining William up that way.

So, my question now becomes, with "Mathias/Matthias" now seemingly in the mix, does the identity of my William and Nancy (likely nee Mathias/Matthias) come into recognition for any of you?

Here's hoping. We've long (again, likely because of Randall's book) figured that William likely came from Greenbriar, but this is the first documentation of any sort which seems to confirm even that detail.

Thanks!

Joe Hittle
www.hittle.info

Not sure if this may be the family. This would be my ggggrandparnets. I just started looking for my family. I do know my grandparents Fredrick and Sara(Sadie) Matthias came from Sherman Co., Oregon(klondike) and then moved to Outlook, Wa.

Shaver, F. A., Arthur P. Rose, R. F. Steele, and A. E. Adams, compilers. "An
Illustrated History of Central Oregon." ("Embracing Wasco, Sherman, Gilliam,
Wheeler, Crook, Lake, & Klamath Counties") Spokane, WA: Western Historical
Publishing Co., 1905. p. 538.

FREDERIC W. MATTHIAS

One of the most successful and prosperous farmers in Sherman county, lives
three miles southeast of Klondike. he was born in Prussia, Germany, December
29, 1855. His parents were Christ and Elizabeth (Peeper) Matthias. The father
served in the Prussian army in the war of 1848, and died in Kansas in 1891. At
present the mother lives with her son and the subject of this sketch.
The latter came to the United States in May, 1884. In October of the same
year he was followed by his parents, and the family settled in Kansas. In 1890
our subject came to Sherman county with his family and mother. He had, at this
time, no capital and worked out for wages among the neighboring farmers. During
five years he herded sheep, the family at that period living at De Moss Springs.
Subsequently Mr. Matthias took a homestead and has purchased more land since
until he now owns one thousand seven hundred and fifty acres. He also owns a
combined harvester and thresher. In 1901 he built a two thousand five hundred
dollar house. He has sixty-five head of cattle; eighty head of horses,
Clydesdale and Percherons, the cattle being in the main graded Short-horn stock.
Mr. Matthias was married in Germany to Dora Hillem, a native of Germany, as
were her parents. Our subject has two brothers and three sisters; Christ, a
brick mason in Germany; William, in Kansas ; Dora, wife of Willie Gieg, of Iowa
; Minnie, wife of William - Schaeffer, of Oklahoma ; and Lizzie, wife of John
Gieg. Mrs. Matthias has one sister, Mary, wife of Thomas Colbert, of Cheney,
Washington. Mr. and Mrs. Matthias have four children, Fred, John, Alvina, wife
of George Robinson, and Amelia. Our subject is a member of the M. W. A., of
which he is venerable consul. Politically he is a Democrat, although not active.
By industry combined with excellent business sagacity Mr. Matthias has built up
a fine property and has, also, won the respect and esteem of the community in
which he resides.

*******************

Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in October 2010 by Diana Smith. The family immigrated to Kansas from a village near Stendal, Germany in 1884. They first stopped at Carbondale, KS and then moved to the Perry / Grantville area in Jefferson Co., KS. Below are the basics. I have more, but nothing prior to immigration. I recently found an old family tree with pictures attached.
Ruth, Is this Ruth Creech? If so, I would like to speak with you. I have begun putting together the Matthias family history (very short) and would like to include all the information in the Matthias family book, if possible, unless it has already been entered on Ancestry.com someplace. Please let me know. Ken Matthias

Charles Matthias of Philadelphia, Saddler, b. 1802 - who is he?

Can you help with Charles, my ggg grandfather? He continues to be my top brick wall. Born 27 May 1802 in Philadelphia, dies 30 August 1877 in Philadelphia. He married Mary Brown and they lived in Philadelphia. I have Charles and Mary's 11 children fairly well-documented. But I have next to nothing about their siblings or parents.

I think Charles mother's name could be Mary Stevenson (1773-1841) but I'm not sure. He also might have a brother Henry from Philadelphia, but again I'm not 100% positive.

Appreciate sharing information.

Many Thanks,
Paul Matthias

I have a John Matthias, but the one you mentioned is not mine. I did a quick look on Ancestry.com and found a John S. Matthias living in Reading, PA with his wife Sallie E (Wilson) Matthias and mother in law Clara Wilson on the 1900 and 1920 Census. Didn't find an open Family Tree for a John S. Hope this might help you find the family that goes with that photo. Good Luck!!

This is my husbands line, and I have gained a great deal of information since last posting here in 2000. Please contact me at Tracy.Matthias@wildblue.net if this looks like your line. Thanks!

Johann Christoph 'Christopher' Matthias
b. May 7, 1824 Uenglingen, Stendal, Germany
d. Sep 18, 1888 Perry, Jefferson, Kansas

Karoline Sophie Louise Piper
b. Germany
(Most have Johann's wife listed as Dorothea Elisabeth Piper b. Aug 24, 1831, and Elisabeth is the name listed in all census. However, I have a picture of Johann with Karoline listed in the family tree of my inlaw's wedding book. Neither of these women's names are with the other famiy graves at Mt. Calvary cemetary. Any info to clear up this mistery would be appreciated.)

Johann had the following six children:
Frederick William Matthias b. Dec 29, 1855 d.
Tracy, thanks so much for the information! I'd love to have any information you can share - I'm trying to make our Family tree as complete as possible. I had no info on where these g-g-g grandparents of mine ended up although I suspected it must have been Kansas. Is Perry near Carbondale? (I live in Canada so my detailed knowledge of American states is not very good!)

I was also fortunate to have had a reply from another Matthias descendent who lives in Washington state. Are you familiar with this branch, are you looking for info on them? If so, I'll dig up my details/contact for you.

Alison
