Good Morning!

My relationship to Ruth is via her husband, James Gould Washbon. He and I both descend from John More and Betty Taylor, our immigrant ancestor. James and I are 3rd cousins 3 times removed. I am also the genealogist for the John More Association in Roxbury, New York.

Do you have a full date of death for James? Our records only show November 1937. I did locate both James and Ruth on Find A Grave complete with photographs of the headstones.

I'm curious about your connection to the Washbon line! I've been trying to locate 'cousins' from the John More Association that have lost touch or have never known about their ties to John More and Betty Taylor.

My personal email is juanitagoin@hotmail.com. If you write, please put James Gould Washbon JMA in the subject line so I don't delete by accident!

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Juanita

Re: Ruth Amelia Mattison

Ruth Amelia Matteson Washbon was my great great aunt. She was born 16 May 1853 in the Village of Morris, New York in a house still owned by my brother and myself (40 West Street). Her father, O.B. or Otis Blackington Matteson (according to his baptismal record at Zion Episcopal Church)and his wife, Lucetta Moss Bates, had a tannery and small farm on the west edge of the village. Aunt Amelia and her sister Harriet were shoolteachers in the Morris Central School which is across the street from the house where they were born and lived until their marriages. Ruth Amelia married James Gould Washbon, son of Henry Russell Washbon and Mariah Eliza/Eliza Maria Smith. He lived on the adjoining farm to the south of the Mattesons. Aunt Amelia and Uncle Gould (typically pronounced Gool)removed to Harper, KS where he was a lawyer and she a housewife. They had no children, but were active in community affairs. They are both buried in the Harper Cemetery. Aunt Amelia died 1 Jun 1932 according to the Matteson family bible. Uncle Gould died in 1937. Her sister Harriet Lavantia (Hattie)Matteson married Andrew Gould Washbon II. A.G. (as he was known) was Uncle Gould's paternal 1st cousin and my great grandfather. Both Uncle Gould, his brother Uncle Fred, and my great grandfather were attorneys in Kansas during the oil boom.

The confusion over O B Matteson's name arises from his naming his son Otis Benoni Matteson. But this son was named for both his father (O B) and his maternal grandfather, Benoni Bates.

I would be happy to share more details. I am curious as to how you relate to Aunt Amelia as we have few living relatives on either the Washbon or Matteson branches.

Eva Mattison, Cumberland Co Il, c. 1889

Hello. I am looking for information on my great-grandmother, Eva M. Mattison/Matteson, born circa 1889. First name also may have been spelled "Etha" at one time. She supposedly lived in Cumberland County before moving to Marshall County and marrying Albert F. Quinn sometime before 1920, when she is listed as his wife in the census. In the 1930 census, she lists her birthplace and that of her parents as New Jersey

In a search of the 1910 census, I found only one Eva Mattison in Greenup, Cumberland Co. She was married to Bert Mattison with 2 young daughters, Myrna and Norma. This Eva is the same age as my Eva would have been that year. A search of the 1900 census finds an Albert Mattison/Matteson living with his father Oscar in Greenup. Research on ancestry.com revealed a death record for this Albert, dated in late 1918, likely from influenza. While it listed him as married, it had no information on the wife or surviving children. His sister, Edna, is listed as the person who provided the coroner with information. Other information in a family tree indicates he was married to an Eva Benson, and they had an infant son Lestor, who also died of influenza in 1918. I have located graves for Albert, an unnamed Mattison child (1918), Edna (1919) and a Norma (1920) in Greenup. No grave or other information for Eva Mattison, Eva Benson or Myrna Mattison has been found yet.

So, is this Eva Mattison the same person as my great-grandmother Eva Mattison Quinn? Is the Bert listed in the 1910 census as her husband Albert Mattison? If so, what was her maiden name? Was she a widow when she married by great-grandfather Albert? And what happened to the 2 children, Norma and Myrna? No one in my father's family has ever mentioned any possibility that our Eva had a family before that of my grandfather.

Any information that could shed light on this mystery would be appreciated. I would be happy to give the information I have on Eva's life after 1920. Thank you
Terri,

Great information! I am researching the wife of Joshua D. Matteson; Elizabeth Ann Tilson Wright (her first husband, Ebenezer Tilson, my great-great-great-grandfather, was killed in the battle of South Mountain, near Frederick, Maryland).

I am looking for Elizabeth's death record and have come up empty-handed. I understand she married Joshua Matteson in 1869. I believe she died in Otsego County, NY in 1883.

If someone is aware of her burial location, that would help tremendously!
Our GG G. yours Joel and mine Willam were brothers. Do you know Iola that lives near Chicago her mother Hattie passed a few years ago. She was named after your Grandmother Iola. I have a very close family member Albert Watkins that was raised in Mansfield by Joel/Hattie. I am from Dayton we visited Mansfield once. Where are you from? I noted on my ancestry history. There are no children for your Grandmother Iola. Can you update me or send me to your tree. Also do you know Nakkia Morris. Your Grandmother Iola and her Grandm. Bertha were sisters. My email is red_choco@yahoo.com. Hope to hear from you soon. Lola Ferguson

Re: Solomon Matteson

I have a copy of the 1850 census for the town of Scriba dated Oct 18, 1850. Page 737 shows a Solomon Mattesson aged 60 living with Lydia Mattesson age 62. He lists his occupation as "farmer" and shows a very high valuation on his real estate of "8000". His place of birth is given as "Conn" and Lydia's is given as "R.I.". An 18 year old son is living with them named "Hamson L" (the n could be an r as in Hamsor L.) Next door is Elon Mattesson age 32, (and likely a son),occupation; Cooper, with his wife Almyra age 26. George B, age 7; Benjamin F, age 6; John E, age 2, Alice C, age 1 fill out the household. Next door to them is Perry Himes age 50 and his wife Lydia Himes age 47. They have six children; Mary A 18, Julia A 16, Hampton 14, Emely 12, Albert 9, and James W 7. Very nearby a are other Mattesson households; Truman G age 38, James age 26, Hiram age 40, all with wives, families, houses and seperate propertys. They likely are children, but an earlier census would be helpful. I mentioned the Himes because of the possibility of a relationship in the neighborhood. In researching my Scriba roots, I found a lot of known family surnames all living in close proximity
BEFORE they became family names.

I am looking for anyone who can help with the date of death for Ruth Amelia Mattison. She was born 16 May 1853 in Moris, Otsego County, New York and married 17 april 1885 in Morris, New York to James Gould Washbon. James Gould Washbon was born 11 August 1853 in Morris, Otsego County, New York and died November 1937 in Harper Kansas. My source for this information is the John More Association books and directories.

The last record I can find for Ruth Amelia Mattison is the 1930 Census in Kansas with her husband.

I have recently located her parents: Otis B (Benoni or Blackington) Mattison and Lucetta Batteson (from familysearch.org).

Any help with Ruth is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your time and efforts.

Juanita

My Laban Norton Matteson spelled his name "Matteson" but
twice his son Oscar Johnson Matteson spelled it "Mattison" so I am looking for any clue to find Laban's father and mother and siblings. I am decended from his son Albert Norton Matteson who always spelled it "Matteson". After the Civil War Laban moved to Illinois. Why? Laban married Clarisa Daniels in New Lebanon NY. For awhile his children lived near Hoosik River in Mass. Why? I have found proof other than the census records of only Albert's birth in Adams Mass, where Clarissa's people are from. Please correespond with me. rbeda@sbcglobal.net RBeda Coffey
