There is something about our last name. We are all in need
to put are history together. My family comes from
El Salvador Central America. My uncle who died in 2007, Flavio Matus knew a lot fo our history. I'm sad to say I
never sat down with him to listen , My only hope at this point is to speak with his daughter, Sylvia Ethel Matus a poet. One thing I can tell you guys,
The Matus from El Salvador are very nobel people.
Ps. you can read my aunts poetry on line. I'm so proud she is agreat lady.

The most important fact that I know about the Matus family is the fact that mine came from Nicaragua, if you were to go down there you will find several hundred Matus' there....

Some corrections and additional info.
The surname "Matus" does mean "Mathew" and is the name that appears in the Czeck Bible where "St. Mathew" appears in English.
Moravia is a state within the Czech Republic close to the Slovak Republic. Prior to World War I, it was in the Austra-Hungarian Empire which existed for many hundreds of years. In the 1200s, the Moravian Empire controlled all of Central Europe.
If you are a Matus whose family came from Moravia, we are possibly related.

I too am a Matus who's family came from Czechoslovakia. My grandfather's name was Josef Matus and born in 1902. I cannot recall the village (possibly Bratislova?) he was from, but it was in Moravia. There is supposedly a mountain named after us from the region he was from.
His father (my great-grandfather) died when my grandfather was quite young. He had just one brother who remained in Czechoslovakia until his death in the 1970s (I believe).
In the 1920s, my grandfather and his wife (Eva Rusnak) were going to emigrate to the US to follow other family members (uncles/aunts/cousins) who had left earlier (not certain exaxtly when but I believe some went to Texas).
Unfortunatley, most of the records in Czechoslovakia were seized by the Nazis and destroyed in World War II.
The family's religion was Catholic. And many spoke German, Hungarian, Czech and Solovak.
PS: The name Matus translates to "Mathew" and is very common first name in Czechoslovakia. There is also a lot of Spanish people with a similar name and possible the link goes back to the Catholic religion.
Most of the information came from Eva Rusnak (my grandfather's wife) who lived to 99 years and died in Dec 2003.

It was close enough to Gastrelo that I was wondering where your Gastelum/Gastrelo were married? Have been searching for the above's family for years. All I know is that she was born in "Lower California", which means Mexico I guess. Would be grateful for any help.

Yes, there are many, many Matus's. My grandfather was Vasily (Charles) Matus. Came from a village near Mukacheve, Austria ( now in Ukraine). He came through Ellis Island in 1907. Worked in coal mines around the Masontown, McKeesport, Pennsylvania area. He married Maria Lengyle, from same village in Austria, and they had ten children - 7 boys and 3 girls. There are 4 living. We are trying to get some information on them. About 40 cousins, many second cousing, and many 3 cousins with the name Matus.

Many of these names sound very familiar. Mary Matus married John Bendick in Lithuania and came to America in the early 1900's, we believe around 1904 or 1906. They had sons named, Martin, Andrew, Albert and John, and other children. I have more information. Please write to my e-mail <leftsweetpea@netscape.net> Subject:Bendick
