I worked there during the summer of 1961 and a few weekends after that. The paintings in the dining room and the lobbies were indeed different! Maud's was my first exposure to Klezmer music too. The chef during those times, as I remember, was either very ecentric or very drunk.

I lived in North Branch (a town not open to outsiders -- after ten years there I was still known as the "new" city kid) and when it was learned that I was working at Maud's I gained new notoriety.

Sometime I'll tell you about the resort on the other side of the valley from Maud's: (someone's) Muldavian Resort...

I so appreciated your message about my late cousin, the artist Zuni MAUD. Have you come up with any additional sources of information about the man and his family? He is a relative of mine, but I don't know the name of his father. Have been researching him and his brother for many years. Have located his nephew in New York City, a college professor no less, but the man refuses to talk to me or write me.

The Center for Jewish History on 16th Street in NYC has at least two boxes of documents about Zuni, which I perused in June 2004, the last time I was in NYC. Do you live in or close to NYC? If so, you would definitely enjoy going over this material. You are welcome to call me at 310.289.8713.

Hi,
I worked as a waiter in Maud's Summer Ray in the Catskills in 1964. I believe it was the last year the hotel was in operation. I had heard the name of Zuni Maud and assumed he was the artist who painted the walls of the dining room with many fantastic images. Don't know if this building - ie, the dining room - still exits and, if it is, whether they painted over the art work. I believe he also painted the walls of the rec hall on the property. The hotel was located in a very pretty valley between North Branch and Callicoon Ctr. This road leads to the town of Roscoe. Hope you find this helpful/interesting

Back in 2004, I gleaned interesting information at the New York City Center for Jewish History on West 16th Street, where I was allowed to search through two boxes of memorabilia about Samuel "Zuni" MAUD. I am trying to ascertain the name of his parents and early family records in eastern Europe -- a difficult task. Living in Los Angeles makes it impossible for me to do any research in NYC or in the Catskills where Zuni and his family ran a guest house, Maud's Summer-Ray.

There is a great history re Zuni Maud as you are aware. He also appears in a book 100 American Jewish artists. I am in the process of collecting ALL of these artist. Zuni Maud is not available. Not that it (he) is valuable it (the art) is not valuable as no one wants his works as no one is prompting it. It is that I am on a quest. Over the years he has fallen off the earth. Let me revise the information I gave in August 2003 about my cousin, the well-known U.S. Yiddish artist Samuel "Zuni" MAUD (1885-1956). I wrote that he was married to Bessie MAUD. That's incorrect: Bessie (nee KOPPEL) was the wife of Zuny's brother Philip "Zeidel" MAUD. Zuny and Zeidel also had a sister named either Lillian "Lulia" or Matilda MAUD, who I think married Mane ROSMAN in the Bronx on January 23, 1930. They were all confirmed Yiddishists, so their names are transliterated in English any old way! If anybody has additional recollections about this interesting family, I'd love to hear from you. I actually visited Maud's Summer-Ray in 1942 or 1943, while my parents were vacationing there and have a couple of B&W snapshots of my Mom with, I guess, Bessie. - Wishing you all "a Guten Pesach," Henny Moed Roth

I'm trying to piece together the ancestry of gifted New York artist Zuni Maud, who appears to be a relative of the MOED family. All I know is that he immigrated to the U.S. in 1905, had a wife named Bessie, and owned a hotel or guest house called Maud's Summer-Ray in the Catskill Mountains of New York State. I even visited my parents there around 1942 or 1943. I've read Edward Portnoy's fascinating article on the ModiCut Puppet Theater in New York, but need factual data.
