Hi My mother was Lillian Margaret Maxted, born 1913. Her Father was Arthur Maxted who won both long distance running and skating races one skating race from Lincoln to Boston. He lived at Bracebridge Lincoln dying of pneumonia in 1951. I now live in West Cork and last lived in England in the Lincolnshire Wolds. Best wishes Maureen

Interesting point of information. There are a few Maxted families here across the pond. Off the top of my head, there are some in a few of us in Wyoming, Montana, Washington, Arizona and Chicago. Its a pretty small family over here that's left. Only 3 brothers, one of which is my dad. I know that we have lineage linked back to the UK, kinda made me start to wondering...

my maiden name is Maxted and i have traced my faily back to 1600 in Kent. I am not cannected to your family.
Where do you live? I am in Canada.
I found Minnie BT in the 1901 census,born 1896 in Folkstone Kent died 1924;
Maxted is a Kentish name and all the Maxteds came from Kent
Minnies parents and siblings are in the 1891 Census George and Alice are the parents.

Is "Edwards" Ann/Annie's surname or another given name?

Do you have a copy of Ann/Annie's birth registration?

There is an 1874 birth registration for an Ann MAXTED listed at BDM Historical Records (http://bdmhistoricalrecords.identityservices.govt.nz/home/). For most entries in the index the names of the parents are given, but not the earliest ones, and that includes this one.

To find out about the parents, you'll need to get a copy of it - get the printout, not the legal certificate, for family history purposes.

A birth registration for this time (ie, pre-1875) is supposed to contain:

* Local number
* When and Where Born
* Names if any
* Sex
* Name and surname of father
* Name and maiden surname of mother
* Rank or profession of father
* Signature, description and residence of informant
* When registered
* Signature of deputy registrar
* Name if added after registration of birth

Unfortunately the marriage details of the parents were only included from 1875.

I don't see Jesse on the NZSG CD "New Zealand Marriages 1836-1956" (http://www.genealogy.org.nz/Sales_11.aspx?CategoryId=11). It's likely that Jesse and Nancy married overseas, or that they never legally married.

Right .. please don't shoot me if I'm wrong !! I also have to thank Jackie Davies (Setterfield) for much of this info.
Here goes:

Robert Maxted born 1829/1830 died 1899. His father was James Maxted a "Cowkeeper". Robert married Elizabeth Wraight in Lambeth. Elizabeth I believe was a Great Great Grandmother. Elizabeth Maxted (nee Wraight) gave birth to Ellen Maxted (Gr Grandmother)at 84 King St Ramsgate in 1853. Ellen Maxted met and married George Brett (1853 - 1891) in 1876. They were married at Trinity Church Chelsea. Robert Maxted was present (he is shown as a farmer) and is a witness on the marriage certificate. Ellen Brett (nee Maxted) gave birth to Ellen (same name) in 1878. They lived at 43 Mayall Road Brixton. George Brett was a solicitor as was his younger brother Robert. Ellen Brett was my Grandmother (my father's mother).

When Ellen Brett was 11 her mother Ellen died and when she was 12 her father George Brett died. She then returned to her Grandfather Robert Maxrted's house... Northwood Farm House in Hopes Lane Ramsgate. (still majestically standing amongst an estate of houses and bungalows). I believe that she lived there until she married in between going to "finishing" school in Switzerland. It was from Robert Maxted's house that she went to get married to Charles Setterfield in 1899. Now this spooky. Ellent Brett married Charles Setterfield on 29th January 1899. Mary Brett her sister was a witness BUT no Robert Maxted. Sadly he died the following day 30th January 1899 at Northwood Farm House. The Maxteds owned the Northwood Dairy Farm and had a lot of land that was either sold or compulsorily purchased to enable the building of Ramsgate Airport... YES Ramsgate Airport. When this closed the Wimpey estate was built there.

Edward's sister,Mary Ann married Joseph Dinsdale in Kingston upon Hull 5/5/1854.He was 20 years old and she 20.I don't know yet when he died but she then married my Great grandfather John Golden 26/1/1866 in Hull.She died in Hull 9/1/1881 aged 45.

My 4xggf was William, a butcher in King St. Ramsgate. Children were James, Jane, Eliza, Elizabeth, Mary, Edward and Arthur all born between 1836 and 1850. Any connection, I wonder?

George Maxted married Naomi Lambourne in Chelsea in 1878. This was Naomi`s 2nd marriage. Children from her 1st marriage were Naomi (1873) and Annie Louisa (1876).

George and Naomi had 4 more children, Eliza Jane, George T, Ernest and William. Ernest is my direct line.

On my Grandmothers birth certificate her mother is names as Annie Louisa Lambourne-Maxted. I believe Annie was born in or around 1876 and married about 1898 (to John Taylor Brown).

The UK 1881 census has a listing in Walthamstow, London with a mother Naomi (age 30 born Bedford), father George (age 31 born Dover), with children Naomi (8), Annie L (5), Elizabeth (3) and George T (1). On the basis that this is the best fit I believe this to be her family!

Relatives of mine have said Annies father was married twice and one of the children from one marriage was Naomi and a 'full' sister is Lily (Elizabeth?).

I have also been led to believe Annies father was also a Lambourne-Maxted though this is less certain.

Does anyone have any information that could extend my search? Was George a Lambourne-Maxted? When did the Lambournes and Maxteds join?

It may be the Lambournes originated from Buckinghamshire.

Did you get any replies to your query re the Maxteds and Bretts? I am particularly interested as my greatgrandparents were George Brett and Ellen Maxted too. My grandmother was Mary Brett(sister of Ellen) who married David Ferguson. I am finding it very difficult to trace the Bretts. Do you think they were from Ramsgate too? I cannot find the family on the 1881 census.

I am searching for any information with regard to the Maxteds of Ramsgate who lived in the late 19th Century at Northwood Dairy Farm. My Grandmother Ellen Brett lived there with her Grandparents after the death of her mother Ellen Brett (nee Maxted) and her father George Brett in London. Prior to this address the Maxted family lived in King Street Ramsgate circa 1860, and were associated with cattle and butchery . Any information would be gratefully received.

This could be the George I am tracing . He was the son of James Maxted and Elizabeth Parker who married in 1812.

His siblings are Eliza 25 Oct 1812, Henry 25 Dec 1813, Edward 16 Mar 1815, James 3 Jan 1819, William 26 Nov 1820.

I have his birth date as 9 Mar 1817.

All were born in the Ramsgate area of Kent.

He came to Australia on the Louisa arriving 1843 - 4 He married Martha Spencer in Hobart in 1843.

They had Francis E in 1844 in hobart he died 1844 in Sydney, Henry E in 1847 he died in 1906, Francis J in 1849 he died in 1917, Robert William in 1853 he died 1854, Sidney in 1845 he died in 1907, Edward in 1855 born Newcastle he died 1902, Elizabeth in 1859 in Maitland she died 1864 and an unnamed female born in Newcastle in 1862 who died in infancy.
