Mrs. Harold Maybee d. 1913 in CO

Appeared in the Lafayette, CO newspaper May 2, 1913:

"SCHOOL TEACHER OF ERIE SUCCUMBS TO BURNS
Mrs. Harold Maybee, a teacher in the Erie, Colo., public schools, died early Sunday morning of burns she received Saturday afternoon when her clothes caught fire following an explosion of gasoline in a traction engine around which she was working while her husband, a farmer residing just over the Boulder-Weld county line was getting it ready to put into use for plowing purposes.

Mrs. Maybee's clothing became a mass of flames immediately after the explosion and she was fatally burned before her husband succeeded in extinguishing the fire. His hands were badly burned while fighting the flames.

Dr. Bingham of Lafayette was summoned by Mr. Maybee but he was unable to do much more than to administer opiates to relieve her sufferings.

Mrs. Maybee has many friends here who will regret to hear of her death. She came to Boulder about four years ago from Williamsburg Pa., accompanying her husband, who was compelled to come to Colorado for his health. She was a competent teacher and much admired at Erie where she taught in the public schools."--Camera

Submitter not related.

Hi - yes plse I would be really interested in any info you have in relation to MAYBEEs in IOW so I can add it to the database am collating.

Do you know your grandfather's dob and anything about his parents name or where on IOW they were from? I can't immediately see where he fits with my own tree but it may be because he is in a later generation of one of the MAYBEE (MABEY, MAYBEY etc) families that I haven't collated yet.

Is any of your info in GEDCOM file?

Regards & thanks
Angela

Isle of Wight one name study re MAYBEE etc

MABEY, MAYBE, MAYBEE, MAYBEY, MABEE, MABY, MABIE, MAYBYE
I am beginning a one name study of the MABEY (and all alternative spellings) families who originated from, migrated to or passed through the Isle of Wight in England.

Am not (yet!) professing to be an expert in nor have the most info collated on this name but I do have a passion which is to untangle/establish the origins of all the Mabeys etc with an Isle of Wight connection.

If you have any connections with this name in the Isle of Wight & would be willing to share your research I would be really interested in hearing from you.

I am aware of the Mabey Society in US and the links between non-UK Mabeys etc and Seigneur Pierre Mabille, a French Huguenot born in 1550, who fled to Holland taking on the Dutch name of Van Naerden. But I haven’t yet made a link between their trees and the Isle of Wight families. If anyone has please do let me know.

Thanks
Angela
Lem Maybee, gopher exterminator, Nebraska

Plattsmouth Journal, Thursday, October 21, 1915
Plattsmouth, Cass County, Nebraska

LEM MAYBEE SLAYS 555 GOPHERS ON 40 ACRES OF LAND
From Tuesday’s Daily
Lem MAYBEE, who for the past thirty days has been engaged on the farm of W.D. WHEELER, east of Murray, in waging a war on the gophers that infested the farm, has made a great success of the hunt and the gophers caught and slain by Mr. Maybee numbers 555, and all of these were secured off of a forty-acre tract of land and shows how the pests multiply when left alone. Mr. Maybee took the contract to clean up the gophers at the price of 20 cents each, and as a result of his month’s warfare on them, he has just received $110, which is quite a goodly sum, but the riddance of the pests is worth that much to Mr. Wheeler and he feels well repaid for the outlay. They were trapped and killed and the dead bodies disposed of, and as a result the Wheeler farm is comparatively free of the now.
John Maybee

There are two John Maybee's in Ohio that are very close in age and I believe they are being confused for each other. There are census records and other records that show there are in fact two different John Maybee's living in Ohio at the same time. The John Maybee that I am through was born abt 1800 in Montgomery, New York. He died 1853/1854 in Mifflin, Wyandot, Ohio. I found his probate record where they inventoried his belongings and also the guardionship for his two minor children, John J. and Irena Maybee. At the time he was married to Mary Polly Keller. He had three childre by his 1st wife Eva/Anna. The children are Ludolphus, Catharine also known as Caty Ann, and an unamed female child that shows up on the 1840 Grand, Marion, Ohio census. This child is not on the 1850 census when John is married to Mary Polly Keller. I am guessing that the child and his wife Eva/Anna died after the 1840 and before the 1850 census. This John Maybee is the son of David Maybee and Gerdraut Freimauer. Please look at your records and see if you have your John confused with the John Maybee that lived in Wyandot, Ohio.

Hi Judy. Thanks for the information.

The list of children I sent you may not be complete (I received them from a rather elderly woman about ten years ago). Your great-grandfather could well fit into that family if he was born in 1855 - at least, from the dates of the birth of the other children he could.

I will take a more thorough look through my information and see if I can find anything else on the weekend.

Good luck! I'm hoping it slows down soon!

Sorry to say I have found no more information on John Harrison. However, I have printed out your info for the file and will make sure I get back to you if anything ever comes across my desk.

Thanks again for your patience.

Regards,

Cynthia

Irena Maybee (b.3/29/1853 OH) married a minister, Austin Hatcher (b.4/3/1852 IL). They lived in and around Warrensburg, Johnson County, Missouri, during period 1881 to 1900, then moved to Oklahoma. Their children include Martha Catherine, Mary, Perry, Louis Austin, Frank W., Reece, Ira, Irene, and Alonzo. I would like to hear from any Maybee or Hatcher "cousins" who may have a connection to Irena, Austin, and/or their children. Will gladly share comprehensive data I have on specific lines of this family. Take care, and good luck with your own research.

Hi Cynthia,
Thanks so much for your reply. I have been searching for information on the parents of John Harrison b. 1855 (he was my great-grandfather). I do know that his parents' first names were John and Isabella, however, I see that you do not have a John on the list of your John and Isabella children's names. I guess I've been "barking up the wrong tree" as they say.
I did, however, discover the names of 3 of your John and Isabella's children on the Wesleyan Methodist Baptismal Register at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wjmartin/wm-h_35.
Hannah Jane - born 1852-05-20
Sarah Jane - born 1848-05-06
Thomas Henry - born 1850-06-15
They were baptised in Etobicoke Township, York County on 25 September, 1852.

Thanks for getting back to me and I hope this little bit of information is helpful to you.
Judy

Hi Cynthia,
I just noticed that you may have provided information on Maybee/Arnold. I am researching the Harrison name. Evidently Sarah Maybee and Henry Arnold had several children one of whom was Isabella. She married John Harrison. I would be most interested in any information you may have on Isabella and John. My greatgrandfather's parents were John and Isabella, and I'm wondering if they may be the same.

Many thanks,
Judy

Hi Mark,
I have come across the family tree you posted on Maybee/Arnold. You indicated they had a daughter Isabella who married John Harrison. I am researching the Harrison name and find that the dates you give might fit into my research.
Could you tell me where you obtained the marriage dates as well as the birth and death dates for John?
My great grandfather was John Harrison (b. 1855) who married Mary Ann McMullen (m. 1880). The marriage record names his parents as John and Isabella Harrison. I am wondering if they might be the same. If they are, I can provide additional information on their family if you want or need it.

Many thanks,
Judy

Maybee-Mabee, Swope, in Iowa, Kansas

I am trying to make a connection between my grandmother, GERTRUDE LENORE SWOPE, born 1879 in Guthrie County Iowa She married Ernest Hoard abt 1897. She had one brother Earl, and two sisters, Frances and Helen. Helen lived in Iowa and Frances lived in the 1950s with a daughter in Oregon on an apple orchrd. They had relatives in Manhatten , Kansas related to Maybee family. We think Earl's and Frances's surname was MAYBE-MABEE.. Frances worked as stage actress for many years. We know nothing about Earl. There was a connection somewhere, I would appreciate any information. e-mail Jtarrfamily@aol.com
