Bee said to blame in Pekin fatality
A 68-year-old woman operating a fruit stand Thursday afternoon in front of her home in Pekin was killed and a customer was injured when a car went out of control and struck them.
Adelaide Mayer of 5311 Townline Road was pronounced dead on arrival at Mount St. Mary’s Hospital, Lewiston, shortly after 3:20 p.m.
Mrs. Mayer was the wife of Edward “Mike” Mayer, Pekin fire chief for more than 30 years. She was well known in the community and served dinners and chowder at many events of the fire company.
Earl Robins, 70, of 3016 Upper Mountain Road, Cambria, the customer, today was listed in “fair” condition at the same hospital, where he was being treated for multiple injuries.
Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies said a southbound vehicle veered off the road and struck the fruit stand that Mrs. Mayer operated.
Kris Kankolenski, 17, of 2742 Lower Mountain Road, Ransomville, who was identified as the driver, told deputies she lost control of her car when a bee crawled into her clothing and stung her. She was treated for a bee sting at the hospital and released.
Deputies said she was charged with failure to keep right.
