Re: Mayes/Maize Family -- Port Austin, Michigan

My name is Paul Mayes. I was born and raised in Port Austin, Michigan. My grandpa was Mike Mayes, and my grandma was Lucy Mayes. My grandpa operated the grocery store / butcher shop in Port Austin (later the IGA). Lucy and Mike's children were Harold, Venice (Finan), Theresa (Flannery), Carl, Edwin, and Raymond (my dad).

By all accounts, our original family name (in Poland, and upon arrival to the US) was Maza (changed to Mayes at Ellis Island or wherever).

My Grandmother, Lucy, was born a Goretski (also of Port Austin), and her dad was also named Mike. They lived southeast of Port Austin, in what is probably Dwight Township.

My Grandma and Grandpa lived next door to the Tastee Freez (which they owned), and farmed 40 - 60 acres directly west of their house.

I can provide a great many more details, but I hesitate, because you may be looking for something else.

Please reply, if you like.

Sincerely, Paul

Elaine
I am also interested in John Mayes. I believe his mother was Thomasin and father George Mayes, born at Ravensden, Beds about 1807. George hooked up with my relative Mary Ann Randall about 1841 (either as wife or partner) and they had 3 children born in Bedford: William 1842, Catherine 1845 and Charles 1850. Thomasin Mayes died in 1876; George Mayes in 1885.
I'd like to know more about John & family.
Andrew R

I am a descendant of this James Mayes. I am a Baxter. We came into this line really late. My grandmother was Adale Mays. Her father was William Oscar Mays. Many of these Mays still live in Palestine Texas. You probably knew this, but it's worth stating anyway. The Baxters live in Ga. Very interesting history on all these people. I'll be glad to share what I know and hopefully vice verse as well.
Thanks

I'm not sure we are talking about the same George Mayes then, my George Mayes served in Co D, 52nd KY Inf. My Malinda Jane Lightfoot was born abt 1848. And I only know of two children for sure....Frank Mayes (09/01/1880 - 05/07/1917) and my GG Grandmother "Jimmie" (Mayes) Roundtree (01/13/1888 - 02/27/1913). I'm not sure when my George passed, but he was still alive in 1880 as he was listed as providing the information on Frank's death certificate.

Guess I'll have to keep looking...Thanks,

Cindy

Just starting on this side of the family. In your 2008 email you state that George M D Mayes is your GG Grandfather. I'm trying to find more about him. My GG Grandfather was a George M Mayes from Simpson Co KY. He married a Malinda Janie Lightfoot from Warren Co KY and is buried in the New Union Cemetery in Ripley Co MO. However his headstone does not have any dates and I haven't been able to find his death certificate. Any help would be welcomed.

Thanks,

Cindy

Kelly:
If you're still out there, your information is certainly interested to us.
My mother was one of 6 children taken to a Toccoa, Ga orphanage in 1924 when her mother died of typhoid. Her name was Grace and the brothers were as you named them. Emery did not survive, and we heard he died as an infant.
We never knew a middle name, but interestingly, Ace fits. We hear he was a gambler and died in a gambling house fire.
We have a marriage license for Roy & Cassie in 1910 in Oglethorpe Co. GA.
Do either of you have any information on a James V. Mayes (1838-1880) from Illinois? I have been wondering what the "V" stood for. Possibly Vernon? . . . I know little about this James except that he was married to a Minerva Wood and they had four children - Ida, Olive, William E., and Lily (all of the children were born in Missouri).

vernon was my fathers brother (Emmitt H Mayes) I dont believe he was the oldest of the kids ,because grandfather james was married before he married my grandmother Jessie. He had children from that marriage also. My Dad often tells me of the brothers from that union. The one I recall most was called Wimpy Mayes and if I recall right there was one named Albert. I try to talk to Dad about my family history but he is with demintia now days and it is rare that he can recall things stright. He (Emmitt) still lives here in Beardstown Illinois next door to me,his youngest son James.
