Researched Henry Mayfield and Millie Davy my Great Great Great grandparents MIlley came to Missouri from Augusta County VA with son Stephen. His Sister Polly was married to Samuel Sullivan and his brother Henry came about the ssme time to Cooper and Saline counties. Some researchers list Henry as William Henry but Rev. War records ( enlisment and boutny land warrant)list him as Henry. I agree the John Mayfield and Frances Clark does not wash, possibly their son was William Henry and he was the father of Henry who died 1814 and whose wife Milley came to MO with son Stephen his wife Elizabeth Hardbarger and their children.

Hello, I am currently researching my family tree and have hit a snag. My reasearch into the Mayfields' has taken me to a "William Mayfield" who married "Charlotte Simmonds" on December 8 1823, in St John, Hackney, Middlesex, England. I don't seem to be able to go any further back. Have been unable to find parents, dates of birth or deaths for either ancesters. The only child that I have found is "John William Mayfield, born 1855 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England & died 1929 in Katoomba, New South Wales, Australia. Can anybody help me.
Thanking you in advance.
Janet Mayfield.

The David that is a couple of pages ahead of them is a better possibility for Alfred's father.
David and Green are on a marriage records list for Grant County, Wisconsin. David was married to Martha Allerbay or Arterbay on 8 Sept 1839; Green to Mariah Kester on 9 Aug 1843.
http://genealogytrails.com/wis/grant/marriages.html
Good luck!

Judy,

Thank you for all your help and I am going to reply to all your posts in this one.

I had found the AC Mayfield that was murdered in the WT and eliminated him due to all the census showing he was from IN.

The 1860 census that shows an Alfred Mayfield could be my relative but I couldn't connect the 1860 and 1870 censuses. The wife in the 1860 census had two children (girls) and the 1870 wife was born abt 1859. I tried to keep in mind that the census taker may not of spoken to the Mayfields themselves but may of gotten the information from a neighbor but with him living next to Green Mayfield I don't want to hang my hat on that. Additionally there is the possibility that the 1860 census wife and children died or that the parents split and the girls went with their Mother but I haven't found any supporting documentation for those theories. I don't want to include it in my tree unless I can make a connection and was hoping someone out there had solved my riddle.

I really appreciate you taking the time to do the research and passing it on. If you come across any more information please feel free to pass it on.

Regards,

Patti

Patti, me again! A couple of pages before Alfred Mayfield in Richmond, Richland County, Wisconsin in 1860 is:

David Mayfield, age 52, farmer TN
Almira Mayfield, 33, PA
Minerva Mayfield, 12, WI
Margrette Mayfield, 6, WI

I see that someone else found an 1885 San Francisco newspaper article about murder victim A. C. Mayfield of Ferndale, W.T. By 1885 W.T. would have meant Washington Territory, where there was/is a town named Ferndale in Whatcom County. The heading on the article is Pacific Coast Items, which would be relevant to Washington Territory, not Wisconsin. I checked the 1885 Washington Territory census for A.C. Mayfield and for an Alfred Mayfield. A.C. did live in Ferndale, Whatcom County, W.T. He was born in Indiana in about 1831. All of his family members were born in Indiana. There was an Alf Maifield in Tacoma, but he was born in Colorado in about 1864, and was black.

Patti, I did an Ancestry search for Alfred Mayfield, born 1840. I found a 20 year old Alfred born in Wisconsin in 1860 in Richmond, Richland County, Wisconsin. The family right before his family was Green Mayfield, age 36, born in Tennessee. Could this be your Alfred and possibly his father (or uncle) next door? That would only make the senior Mayfield 16 when Junior was born, but as my mother said "The first one can be born anytime!"

747-627:
Green Mayfield, 36, farmer, TN
Maria Mayfield, 36, IN
Sarah Mayfield 14 WI
Maria Mayfield, 10 WI
Elijah Mayfield, 8, WI

748-628:
Alfred Mayfield, 20, farmer, WI
Mary A. Mayfield, 19, IN
Rachael Mayfield, 1, WI
Unnamed Mayfield, 1/12, WI

Hello,

Trying to find the father of my Great Great Grandfather Alfred Mayfield born abt 1840 in the Wisconsin Territory. He married Alice Jones in 1869 in Nebraska. I have not been able to locate an 1860 census listing for him. I traced him backwards from my Grand Mother Alice Leone Mayfield, Great Grand Father William Mayfield, then Albert Mayfield. I have his father listed as James Mayfield born abt 1815 but that is not documented and this is where I lose the trail. I have Alfred in California, from voter records and census, from 1870 to 1880. If anyone knows when and where he died I would appreciate that information also. California death index doesn't show him.

Can anyone help me with this mystery?

Thanks

Patti

Mayfield, Dr. George Franklin (1883-1958)

Transcribed from a biography written by their son, F. Drew Mayfield. Biography in the El Campo Public Library in the Research and Genealogy room in the book "Memories and Memorials".

Mother and Dad were both born in Missouri, married in Rock Island, Texas, June 5th, 1906 and moved to El Campo, Texas in 1909. Mother was Grayce Irene Johsnon and was born August 17, 1884 in Mercer County, Missouri. Her mother and father moved to Rock Island, Texas, in 1899 and to El Campo in 1907. Mother died in Austin, Texas, December 31, 1965. She was the youngest of eight sisters and two brothers. One of her sisters was Mrs. L. O. (Jessie) Lundy of El Campo.

Dad was born in Madison County, Missouri, January 8, 1883. He met mother during his summer vacations in Rock Island. He was next to the youngest of three brothers and three sisters. He died in Austin on August 4, 1958.

After they married in Rock Island, Texas, in 1906, they settled in Kansas City, Missouri and then moved to El Campo in 1909. Their final move was to Austin, Texas, in 1938. They are both buried in El Campo at O.D.H.S. Cemetery.

Mother graduated from Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville, Texas. She taught school before she married. She was from a long line of farmers from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Iowa and Missouri.

Dad graduated from Physicians and Surgeons College in St. Louis, Missouri in 1906 and was from a long line of physicians stemming from two M.D.'s of three brothers was came to America from England. He was raised a Baptist. The Mayfield name appears often in a book giving the hisotry of "Baptists of Southeast Missouri" printed in 1888. Dad played football and baseball in college. In El Campo, he was active in land development and the Mayfield and Clark Realty Company operating a special coach on the railroad bringing prospective buyers from the north to buy land.

Dad's health was poor and in 1928, he and mother renovated the old Rice Hotel and operated it as the Mayfield Hotel until 1938 when they sold it and moved to Austin where he was in advertising until his death in 1958.

For many years Dad was City Secretary and I cherish his signature on a copy of my birth certificate from the files in Austin. As correspondent for the Houston Post and Houston Chronicle, he was the voice of El Campo with his news reports and coined the name "El Campo Rice Birds" for our high school football team. He always kept a score board for the town baseball team.

Mother always loved flowers and I have a picture of her from the Austin-American Statesmen standing in a beautiful bed of flowers in her front lawn in Austin. She always loved her bridge club in El Campo and later in Austin was historian for the Austin Woman's Federation.

Mother and Dad had two children born in El Campo: George Malcolm Mayfield born April 14, 1912 who on December 27th, 1947 married Dorothy Nina Smith of Houston, Texas. They have no children. Franklin Drew Mayfield, born May 21, 1915 who on August 16, 1952, married Mary Jane Field of Dallas, Texas. They have three children all born in Corpus Christi, Texas: Mary Jo Delahaye, John Drew Mayfield and Lucy Rose Mayfield.

Mother and Dad solved the Methodist/Baptist problem by becoming Presbyterians and raised us as Presbyterians. Filling out the circle, Malcolm married an Episcopalian and became an Episcopalian and I married a Baptist and we are Methodist. Our daughter, Mary Jo and her family are Catholic.

Both Malcom and I graduated fro Texas A.&I. in Kingsville and from the University of Texas at Austin. Malcolm was a Civil Engineer and is now retired from the U.S.Corps of Engineers and he and Dorothy live in Galveston. I was a Chemical Engineer (PhD.) and am retired from Foster-Grant Co., Inc. and Mary Jane and I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

____________
the above was written by Franklin Drew Mayfield

George Malcolm Mayfield died in Galveston, Galveston County, Texas on the 14th of June of 2003.

Franklin Drew Mayfield died in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on the 7th of August of 1992.
Phil Norfleet/Mayfield researcher

Does anyone know how to contact Phil Norfleet? His website is great but I have one problem. On the 1790 SC census records he has three Stephen Mayfields listed and identified. But, my ancestor, Stephen Mayfield (bc. 1750) is also from South Carolina and migrated to Georgia around 1820 with his daughter and son-in-law Amos Newton Kelley. He should have been listed in the 1790 census as his daughter Elizabeth was born in 1796 in SC. I feel that my ancestor is one of these Stephens and that he has been mis-identified or, my family history contact is mistaken about Elizabeth's ancestors. Perhaps Phil Norfleet can shed some light on this. I tried the norfleet01@hotmail.com but was returned as undeliverable

Thanks

Sandy Becker

I found Y B Mayfield in the 1900 and 1910 census in Bell County, Texas and 1920 and 1930 in Jones County, Texas. Y B married Minnie D Poe on 30 Aug 1900 in Bell County, Texas. This record is indexed on familysearch.org in Texas marriage records.

Y B Mayfield lived in Friona, Texas in 1952 and he's listed as informant on the death certificate of Lola Mont Sanders, his mother-in-law. So I believe that Y B and Minnie were living near her mother. I am particularly looking for information about the Poe line, and Minnie's parents.

Thank you for any assistance you can provide. Karen

question regarding Prishia Mayfield Cobbs

I wrote the following letter this morning to the only two e-mail addresses I could find for Phil Norfleet and both addresses immediately bounced. So I have revised the letter somewhat for posting here hoping that someone else might be able to shed further light on my dilemma, which also underscores why no one should ever just copy and paste what they find in other files without verifying and documenting that information -- information that just "might" be incorrect or has been revised at a later time. --Wilene

Phil, you are a hard man to find. I found your wonderful Tripod website on the Mayfield genealogy but nowhere could I find a "Contact Me" link or e-mail address, so I Googled you and found other folks also trying to find you at Looking for Phil Norfleet - General - Family History & Genealogy Message Board - Ancestry.com and at RootsWeb: MAYFIELD-L need to contact phil norfleet

My reason for writing concerns a multitude of Ancestry Trees, 16 to be exact, that seem to be copied from each other, and even reference each other, but without further documentation or source citations.

So I Googled some names and eventually found your website on the Mayfields, then Googled again to find you. The info on the Ancestry Trees seem to stem from your website, either wholly or in part, but without any reference to you that I could find. Not even a simple, "Thank You, Phil."

My question concerns this statement on your website,
http://mayfield02.tripod.com/jesse_mayfield_(d__1833).htm
"Preshia Mayfield was born in about 1795 in Greenville County SC; she died on 28 June 1861 in McMinn County TN. Preshia married David Alexander Cobbs in about 1820 in Greenville County SC. David was a Presbyterian minister and was born on 08 June 1794 in Greenville County SC. He died on 10 June 1879 in Johnson County TX."

And my question is -- how sure are you that David Cobb's wife Prishia was a Mayfield?
Please, please tell me your source for this because if Prishia was absolutely and for sure a Mayfield, then I must change my file.

I believe instead that Prishia was a Grogan, daughter of David and Hannah Grogan of Greenville Co., SC, and McMinn Co., TN.

Why do I believe this?

Because Hannah Grogan was enumerated with David and Prishia in 1850 McMinn County. That enumerator really messed up badly. He has Coob instead of Cobb; he has David and Prishia 20 years younger than they were; and he has Hannah's name spelled Grason instead of Grogan (or at least how Ancestry interpreted his handwriting for their Index).

David and Hannah Grogan were among the many families who left SC in the 1820s for Georgia and the Land Lotteries. David died there prior to the 1830 census when Hannah was enumerated as Head of Household. In 1840 and in 1860, Hannah was living in McMinn Co. with her daughter, Mary Kirksey, and in 1850 with David and Prishia Cobb, family #1792. Family #1791 was David C. and Melissa Grogan who I believe was Hannah's youngest son.

David and Hannah were enumerated in Greenville Co., SC, in 1800, 1810, and 1820, and the latter two censuses includes a female the right age to be Prishia.

Then she married David A. Cobb and they are enumerated in the 1840 McMinn Co., TN, census, line 21. Thos. & Mary Kirksey, and Hannah Grogan are on line 11 of the same page.

I can only hold my breath as I hit the Send button that either of these e-mail addresses will get this letter to you, and that I will receive a successful, informative response. --Wilene Smith in Wichita, KS
