Many thanks for this info - much appreciated.
'My' Joseph was probably baptised c 1745
There were two Joseph Mayo's buried at Whittlebury, the Joseph you mention in 1809 & another Joseph who was buried aged 72 on 28 Jan 1821 - who looks the more likely.
The Mary you mention is probably Joseph's wife & my forebear.

Mayo is a curious name - it seems to have spread across the world!

Good luck with your research - will be interested to hear how you get on. The canal concept is a fascinating one.

I have cds of the baptisms, marriages and burials in Northamptonshire from 1700 to 1812.

I guess you ahve these but there is a Mary Mayo from Silverstone buried in Whittlebury on 16 March 1802 and a Jospeh Mayo on 14 May 1809

The only Joseph Mayo baptised between 1700 and 1750 was one in Hartwell on 17 jan 1726 to John & . There are no Mayo baptisms in Whitlebury or Silverstone

best wishes

Sarah

Many thanks for looking (btw, which baptisms did you look at?)- I have scoured Northants, Bucks & Oxfordshire for the elusive Joseph, but to no avail. Yes, Silson/Silston is the old local name for Silverstone. Whittlebury, Silverstone & Paulerspury are all very close, within 5 ml of one another.
My earliest Mayo is Joseph Mayo (b c 1745) who married Mary Higham in 1769. I have a theory that the Mayos centered on Middleton Cheney in Oxfordshire (at least for a time)- there were a lot of Mayos there and from time to time my family have married folk from there, which would indicate ongoing contact

I have had a look at the baptisms and can't see a Joseph baptism between 1700 and 1750. Looking at the marrigae in 1769 both are listed as being from Silson, but looking on google maps I think this is actually Silverstone.
I can't see any marriages around 1740 for Mayo.

I find the Mayo's very elusive

The Shakspeare link for me comes from William Mayo and his wife elizabeth Buttery. It is Elizabeth's ancestors who are John de hampden and Elizabeth Whalesborough. John and Elizabeth are Shakespeare's great, great, great grandparents. I am desended from a different child from William and have calulated I am his 12th cousin, 3 times removed - but famil is family !!

Interested in this thread.
My Mayos came from Whittlebury & I'm stuck on Joseph Mayo who was probably born around 1745 & married Mary Higham at Whittlebury in 1769.
Joseph must link back to other local Mayos. Interestingly, his son, another Joseph Mayo, married Anne Ladeyman from Middlton Stoney, Oxon, which is a hotbed of Mayos.
I would be fascinated to share info with anyone else researching these Mayos

Curious about william Shakespeare!
Mayo in Georgia & Kentucky

My brick wall ancestor is Mr. Mayo. Don't know his wife, but his children are Rachel, b. 1802 in Georgia, Elizabeth, b. 1812 in Kentucky, the rest born in Indiana: Susannah, 1816, Sarah, b. 1820 and Valentine Williamson born 1824. Does this fit with anyone's Mayo family? The family seems to have been in Southern Indiana in Orange County and Dubois County and ended up in Indianapolis.

Jane Sarles

Re: Joseph Mayo and Jean Richardson

I have just recently started doing the research on the children of James (1711) and Martha Williamson. I am most interested in the information you have. I know the names and most of the spouses of the children for Joseph and Jean"Jeanie" Richardson. Your info on a war journal sounds fascinating and I would love to see it some day. I am descended from James and Ruth Underwood. I have most of the children descended from Valentine and Ann Patterson who came to Wilkes Co. GA. Valentine, Jr and Winnifred Wilder are my ggg grandparents. Their sons William, Williamson and Wiley C.were orphans, as Valentine Jr. and Winnifred died @1820, a year after my gg grandfather Wiley was born, 1819. My line then is Robert Toombs Mayo, Wiley Tillman Mayo and my mother Mildred Mayo Jarriel. I am going home this weekend and hope to find the graves of Valentine Jr. and Winnifred. They are buried in Hancock Co. GA. I have the children of Wiley C. He was a soldier in the War Between the States. He and two sons were killed at Frederick City Maryland going to meet up with Lee in VA. The youngest son , my great uncle "D" was a drummer boy and came home from the war. Mother's sister, Vera Mayo Fine was a genealogist and I just ecently picked up some of her old notebooks and began to research. That is where I found The Virginia Genealogist that had all the children for James (1711) and started searching on the computer. They were having the Mayo family reunion of the children descended from Wiley up until a few years ago. I have this info. When I learn how to put it all together in a proper form I will post it.
Nancy, I am new to this so am not sure I am doing this right. My mother's name is Mildred Mayo. We have had family reunions and I have names of the children of Valentine Mayo and Winnifred Wilder in Georgia. I am interested in the info you have to share. I have Sarah and Jonathan Brooks having 4 children, twins Charles and Sarah Brooks born the 12 Aug 1680 listed on pg 16 of Christ Church Parish Middlesex Co; VA and a son named Jonathan b. 4 Dec 1684 and a dau named Mary baptized May 1687 born to widow Sarah Brooks pg 168. does this agree with what you have? Again, I would love to have the family back to Holland if you have it to share. Mary Dean

I believe your John Boylston Mayo is the same Johnny B. Mayo listed in the Massachusetts 1865 census.

He is the son of John S. Mayo. John S. Mayo is listed in "John Mayo of Roxbury, Mass." by Chester Garst Mayo, published in 1965 and available in many genealogical libraries. Unfortunately this book gives no further information on John S. Mayo and his descendants.

At the time of the 1865 census they were living in Holden, Worcester County.

Harry Mayo

Children: Albert R. and John B. Mayo.

John Boylston Mayo (as listed on 1880 Federal Census) lived with his sister-in-law (Olive W.) in Worcester, MA.
Paul Harry Mayo of Vermont 1910

Looking for the birth parents of Paul H Mayo born abt 1910 in Winooski, Vermont, or possibly New Hampshire. Adoptove parents Burt Mayo and Mary (Fitzgerald) Mayo. 2011 update- Have found more leads, Mary Fitzgerald married twice. First husband Lorton Levy Lothrop, separated in 1910,same year Paul Harry was born, do not know if she had a child with him. Second marriage to Carroll Burton "Burt" Mayo, her name on wedding certificate Mamie Lothrop. This marriage never known to our family. Much of Mary's life withheld from my Grandfather Paul Harry Mayo by other "family" members because of outdated religious beliefs. They would not even share there knowledge with him in his last 10 years of his life as he tried, with many trips to Vermont, to find his roots. There are a few leads. First lead is Carroll Burton Mayo's first marriage to Annie Billile, who he might have had a child with. She died very young, after only a few years of marriage. Second, Paul Mayo could be the child of Lorton Levy Lathrop and Mary Mamie Fitzgerald, after they broke up. Either of these two, he may have been told he was adopted to hide other marriages or facts. He may be Lorton's son with Mary Fitzgerald, or he may be Carrolls son with Annie Billile, or really an adopted child. It's been a long search, since Paul Harry Mayo started in 1973, hope we can find our roots. Anyone with any information, please email.

Hi Pauline,

Great to hear from another Mayoh relative. My tree is a public one - if you search for James Corden Mayoh born 1921 you should find it; it's called "Marsh, Mayoh, Corden". I doubt that your line is on there so I'll contact you by email giving you what I've surmised about your family.

John Christopher got his Y DNA tested and had a close enough result to that of my brother and that of a distant cousin in Australia to suggest they all descend from a common male ancestor. The surname is so unusual and so confined to the Turton / Darwen area in the earliest surviving records, this is what I'd hoped would be the case.

regards,

Helen

Re: looking for mayo relatives

My grandparents, Ellsworth Mayo (1921-2004) and Jean Crist Mayo (1928-199?), are both deceased. They lived in Stockton, California, for most of their lives and had four sons, my father being the youngest. My father doesn't know much about his ancestry, but I had heard our ancestors are from Ireland. I am considering studying Gaelic literature in Ireland as part of my grad school program, so I would love to learn more.
Let me know if you think there is any chance we have relatives in common and perhaps we can help each other.
