Newland Maffat Mayson was my great grandfather. He was the son of Felix Grundy Mayson and Sophia De Rocheblave. He was a confederate soldier, served in Murphy's Battalion of Alabama, was a prisoner on Ship Island, Mississippi. He is buried in Troy, Alabama. His first wife was Virginia Harverson. They had two sons, the eldest Walter Leonard Mayson was my grandfather.

Those who descend from Col. Mayson may have interest in a new book [pub.2009] entitled "South Carolina 1775 - A Crucible Year." This is a documented [footnoted] history about SC leadership [rebels & loyalists] as they approached a break from Great Britain. Includes background data on those actively engaged with the SC Provincial Congress & Council of Safety to launch a rebel government. As a member of Congress & a man second-in-command of the rebel's Regiment of Rangers, Col. Mayson plays a significant role in 1775.

Book is available at Amazon, Borders Books or from the publisher, American History Imprints; 921 Lehigh Valley Drive; Franklin, TN 37069.

See americanhistoryimprints.com

Colin, just seen your note, family goes back further. Crosthwaite Church, Keswick, records a Peter Mayson as its vicar in 1458 or thereabouts. We had alot in the trade! Sorry no ancient cumbrian tribal roots. We started off in Europe. Came over just after William and settled in Kent before moving north.
Regards

Hi,
Wondered where you got the information on Ramsey Mayson's marriage to Margaret Ann Grundy. I have heard that also but can't remember where the information came from and what time period the marriage was.

There were secrets in this family from what I understand and I suppose the decendants don't want to mess up what they seem to think is a perfect genealogy so nobody includes the "secrets".
I was supprised to see the genealogy on genealogy.com included the second wife of Felix Grundy Mayson (Jane Dunlap) When he moved to Texas he married this woman and there was a marriage certificate and newspaper annoucement, but most of the decendants do not acknowledge this family, as he was not divorced from his wife Sophia Rochblave Mayson at the time.(She was Catholic and they didn't allow divorces)
Why was Felix Mayson and Jane on the census with their two children if it wasn't so??
Why did Felix name these two children after his own children, his father, and his aunts and uncles??
Then there is of course my ggrandmother, who Felix fathered as a young teen, and she is not acknowledged either.
Strange how these Mayson's like to deny people who actually lived on this earth and knew what family they belonged to.
Anyway let me know about Margaret Ann Grundy.
P.J.
I just started researching this line for a very close friend.

I would like to know where your information comes from. And also, from a family member who research many many years ago, I have that Ramsey married a Margaret Ann GRUNDY, yet you aren't the first place I've seen the name Elizabeth Beckham GRUNDY. And on your list, you don't mention a child of Ramsey named Newland M MAYSON. I would urge subject lines for new messages to be better than many of the older ones (smile).

I do this work as a retirement hobby and have no MAYSON ancestor, rather my ancestors have been MASON named as far back as Maryland Colony in 1700s.

Enjoy,
Emmett Mason

Dear Valerie,

I am a descendent of James Mayson.Your great grandfather Charles Glynn was (I believe) the brother of my great grandmother. I'm not at home now, and I can't recall her name. They were born in Columbia, the children of Hamilton and Mary (Pittman) Mayson.

My grandmother was named Vesta Eugenia. She was your grandfather's 1st cousin. So, I think we are 3rd cousins. My mother moved to Pascagoula from Columbia after high school. She married my father there and they have lived there ever since. I grew up there.

My grandmother Vesta lived in Hattiesburg when I was growing up. We'd go there often, but rarely went to Columbia. Other than Mama's brothers (Jacob, George, and Johnny) and her sister Grace (and their children), I really don't know much about Mama's family.

My grandmother had a sister (May) who lived in Columbia. We'd visit her occasionally. Had a really great old house. Walking into it was like taking a trip back in time. Her brother Shug lived in Miami, and I can only recall meeting him on one occasion. There was an older sister called Daughter who died long before I was born. They used a lot of nicknames. Vesta's nickname was "Baypen" which may be the most atrocious nickname ever coined (not that Vesta is much better). She had a melancholy disposition, down right gloomy if the truth be told, and I think that nickname had something to do with it. All these people would have been Farrar Bessilieu's first cousins (I think.)

I see where this message was posted a couple of years ago. I hope you receive it. I'd really like to know something about that branch of the family. I live in Canton and work in Jackson (I'm a lawyer with the Secretary of State's office.) I've got a few pictures, but only a few. Do you live in Mississippi?

Write when you can.

Martin Hegwood
