Sarah (Sally or Meron) M(a)cAdam (b. abt. 1765) married John M(a)cDonald of Knoydart. They emigrated to Canada in 1786. She is thought to be the daughter of John of Donald of Neil. Has anyone come across this specific M(a)cAdam Scottish lineage?

Hi
I am related to Stella and Mabel McAdam who had family in Fintona, Co. Tyrone through my great grandmother, Margaret McAdam. A John McAdam posted about this family back in 2008 at Ancestry.com and I have recently found that post and replied, but so far have not heard from him (I can't email him directly).
Here is the info I have about the family.

Margaret (Maggie) McAdam
Born:	May , 1856 at “Rose Vale” Doocarrick, Cootehill, County Cavan, Irish Republic. Stephen McAdam (in 1883) still lives in the house where Margaret was raised.
Died:	July 27, 1935 at Mille Roche, Ontario
Buried:	At Moulinette but her headstone was moved to the St. Lawrence Valley Union Cemetery near Ingleside, Ontario
Married:	Thomas Simons youngest son of David Simons (I) on Dec. 24, 1878 at the Parish of Ashfield Church, Cootehill, County Cavan, Ireland (a copy of the marriage certificate is available both from the Church and from the Registrar General, The Custom House, Dublin, Ireland).
Born:	Aug. 2, 1857, presumably at Cortober, County Cavan, Ireland.
Died:	Dec. 3, 1936 at Mille Roche, Ontario of pneumonia
Buried:	Dec. 5, 1936 at Moulinette, Ontario. Grave remains at Moulinette under water but his headstone was moved to the St. Lawrence Valley Union Cemetery near Ingleside, Ontario
Lived: At Cortober, near Cootehill, Co. Cavan, Ireland after her marriage. In April, 1883, came to Megantic County, Quebec with her husband Thomas. her mother-in-law Anne Simons, and her two oldest children, Elizabeth Anne Simons and Henry (Harry) John Simons.
Stella McAdam stated that the McAdam family in Ireland went to a Presbyterian church.

Father: Joseph McAdam Jr...member of the Royal Irish Constabulary. He retired from the Royal Irish Constabulary on health grounds in 1902, and went to live in Fintona, Co. Tyrone and died in 1914 at the age of 54.
Born: August or September, 1860 in Co. Cavan, Ireland. Note: on his marriage certificate, his age is given as 22, which would give a birth year of 1866.
Lived: His address on his marriage certificate is Ballymona, Co. Antrim, but he was working as a police officer in Co. Antrim at the time of his marriage.
Died: 1914 at Fintona, Co. Tyrone, Ireland
Father: Joseph McAdam Sr
Mother: Unknown...could this be the Margaret Sleator that Stella McAdam mentioned (see below)?
Mother:	Mary Lizzie Giboney at 2nd Ballynahatty Presbyterian Church, Parish of Drumragh near Omagh, Co. Tyrone, Ireland on December 18th, 1888.
At the time of her marriage she is listed as living at Attaghamore. Her father is listed as James Giboney, a farmer.
Born: 1868 (her age is given as 20 on her marriage certificate)
Note: Margaret Sleator is the name of Joseph McAdam’s wife that was given to me by my Aunt who had it from Stella McAdam, but records in Ireland suggest it was Mary Giboney.

Children of Joseph McAdam Jr and Mary Giboney:

(a) William McAdam...farmed at Doocarrick, Co. Cavan, then was a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary and later bought a farm near Fintona, Co. There is a June 19, 1883 marriage record in Ashfield Parish, Co. Cavan for an Elizabeth Madill, but she married a Robert McConkey, not Joseph McAdam. There is a church baptism record for Elizabeth Madill in 1811 in Co. Cavan.
There are so many McAdams in the area. How can we pick ours from the multitude? Samuel and Phoebe McAdam look possible: 1851 Census Tyenindaga Twp., Hastings Co., ON. My grandfather said John was the father of my Richard Chalmers Scott, but maybe it was Samuel and the John was his brother. No proof.
Kaylene,

Pleased to hear from you.
Lieutenant , later Captain, Gilbert McAdam is my 4th great-grandfather.
His parents were James McAdam and Margaret Reid.
He was born in Ayrshire,
As aide-de-camp to Lord Loudon during the French and Indian War, Gilbert had met Christopher Kilby an extremely rich merchant from Boston
who had been appointed an army contractor also answerable to Lord Loudon. Christopher Kilby introduced Gilbert to Sarah, his recently widowed daughter.
Gilbert married Sarah (Kilby) Cunningham, born in Boston Massachusettes, on 25th September 1757 at Trinity Church, New York City.
At the end of his posting in Albany, New York, Gilbert returned to live in Straiton, South Ayrshire, together with Sarah and her two daughters.
Having been bequeathed a fortune by his mother, he bought three farms, but soon ran into financial difficulties. After the death of Sarah in
1779, Gilbert went to live at The Castle Inn, New Cumnock, where Mrs Moore, his former housekeeper at Laight Farm, was now the inn-keeper.
Gilbert died in 1789.

I am a descendant of Gilbert & Sarah's son, Christopher Kilby McAdam. Other children were Martha, Clara, John, William and Gilbert's step-children Susannah and Sarah Cunningham.

Gilbert's brother, James, is the father of John Loudon McAdam, the 'macadamizer' of roads.
Another brother, William, emigrated to New Jersey where he opened a store selling Scottish goods. His wife and he were buried at Trinity Church, New York.

Hope to hear from you again soon,
All the best,

Robert McAdam

My ggg-grandfather Joseph Shaw (b 1798 in Orange Co,NC)was married to a Sally(or Sarah b.1797). I found a marriage in Orange Co to a Sally McCadams. I believe she may be the daughter of James McAdams and Hannah Smith. A James M'Caddam signs the marriage bond. They moved to Gibson Co,TN in 1845 and then to Johnson Co.,TX in 1854. Their children were: Hannah,James M,Hugh,Zilpha,Elizabeth, and Nancy. If there are any McAdams or Shaws out there that can verify if these 2 actually married I would appreciate it.

Here we go!
I shall work back from my great Grandfather Andrew
Born in 1858 to George McAdam (b.c.1809 Girthon, d.1877 Canonbie) and Sarah Douglas Kennedy(b.1818 Colmonell d.1902 Riccarton) behind 8 other siblings.

His siblings were, in order or birth:

Elizabeth Jonstone McAdam 1842 – 1867
(sarah kennedy's mother was Elizabeth McMillan)

Marion Grierson McAdam 1844 – 1922 (father's mother?)

Anne McAdam 1846 – 1890

William McAdam 1848 – 1924 (father's father name?)

Mary McAdam 1849 – 1873

John McAdam 1852 – 1935/6

Alexander Kennedy McAdam 1853 – 1931 (Sarah's father was Alexander Kennedy 1780-1870)

Margaret Kennedy McAdam 1854 – 1930

Now parents of George ( from naming patterns, census and death records and William's will and testament)
William McAdam and May Grier (sometimes Marion Grierson) were the fitting generation above George. There is no birth record for George that I can find! All children of William and May were born in Girthon less stated otherwise.

John McAdam
1792 – Townhead farm
Thomas McAdam
1794 -
Martin McAdam Townhead farm
1796 –
Annie McAdam Townhead farm
1798 – 1878
William McAdam Townhead farm
1800 –
Alexander McAdam WIGTOWN
1812 –
May Ann McAdam - born England on 1841 census- perhaps she is a cousin???
1825 – 1905

William McAdam is perhaps born 1755 to John McAdam and Margaret Martin (note naming patterns and Girthon births)- we have a clock with his name on it registered to 1770,Horse tax and Clock tax records for 1797 residing at Townhead Girthon.
He dies in 1834 (no age given) at little Park Farm Minnigaff where in 1841 George is Head farmer, with Marion alexander and mayann.

Marion Grierson dies in 1861 born circa 1772 parents unknown

However I have seen the above list of names with William McAdam and Emma Griffen ( the name of MAYANN MCADAM (KENYON) parents on her death record in England!?
What is going on? Hope this give more information perhaps it has just confused things more?!

Mystery of William McAdam Girthon emma Griffen or May/Marion Grier/Grierson

Hello! I am researching my 3XGreat Grandfather William McAdam. I can link him through naming patterns, the grandfather clock (made 1770) we have that was his (found tax records for it too) and from his will and testament that has him mentioning George McAdam his next of kin at Little Park Farm Minnigaff when he died in 1834.I still never found a birth record for George McAdam?! despite all other siblings before and after his supposed birth date?

However I can not be sure of his parents- were they as the mcadam births website 'mbirths' suggests ->John McAdam and Margaret Martin...it may be a reason for one of his children being called Martin McAdam and dates could fit- certainly the right area.

Another puzzle is Mayann McAdam- who I believe married John Broadfoot kenyon and moved to England- in the 1841 census she is mentioned with George and family but is born in south England (not south West Scotland) and people say her parents were William McAdam and Emma Griffen? I have also seen trees with William McAdam with what I have as my version of the family he had with May/ Marion Grier/Grierson but his wife is put as Emma Griffin?

Can someone untangle this or does someone know who or why Emma Griffen keeps popping up instead of the recorded name May Grier?
Andrew

I too have connections to the McAdam's of this area. I believe this Robina may be the daughter of William Mcadam of Troqueer. I also have a William Mcadam in my line and a Robina (dates are ~1880s). Most of the McAdams are some how related to John Loudon McAdam (Tarmac) and as a result this family moved a lot. JLM connection to Road Making caused the family lines to move around a lot from one year to the next. Look up the McAdam historical society and you can learn more then I can post here. One this is for sure that this family would have been in parts of London, Bristol and Liverpool during this time period. Various branches of this line also went to NZ/OZ as well. I too would love to see any documents or photos of your McAdams. Check out my trea at Evans Nov 2009.

Regard, Janet (janetleeevans@sympatico.ca)

Hi Casey,
An indirect response to your query, which I've just spotted on Rootsweb. Ken Dowdney had mentioned to me a while back that you'd contacted him, and that you'd helped to solve the mystery of who Robert Hook was. I've been including you on email postings related to the McAdam family tree since then, but I've got a feeling you might not have been receiving the emails. For some reason, don't know why, messages that I send to hotmail addresses don't seem to reach their destinations. Sorry if it's inconvenient, but could you just confirm for me whether you've received the emails or not?

Kind regards

Douglas Carrel

Hi,

Just noticed your message regarding Robina McAdam, born about 1844/45, from Dumfries, Scotland. My mother's family all came from down around the Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire area, with many connections around Dumfries, and I remember her talking about an aunt Bina - no doubt a shortened form of Robina. Although she referred to her as aunt Bina, she would've been an aunt of my grandmother's, or possibly even a great aunt. My grandmother was a McAdam, incidentally. My mother passed away recently, but I've inherited her collection of photos, a large number of which came from my grandmother's collection. In amongst it all is a nice little portrait shot, which someone has inscribed on the back, "Bina". The photographer's stamp is for Barrow in Furness, which, unless I'm mistaken, isn't too far away from the areas in England that you mentioned. if you're interested in seeing the photo, just let me know.

Kind regards

Douglas Carrel

Do you know if Elizabeth had a brother named Thomas born in Belfast? Thomas and Bridget McAdam moved to Scotland around 1900 then emigated to Louisville, Kentucky around 1930. They had nine children, Tom, Owen, John (Jack), Frank, Anne, Mae, Martin, and Pat. I can't remember the ninth kid's name right now. Seven of their kids were born in Belfast and the last two in Greengairs, Scotland.

Hi,

I'm looking for information about Robert McAdam b.c.1848 Castle Douglas, Kircudbrightshire.

I'm unable to find a birth/baptism certificate. On his marriage certificate to Elizabeth Buckley (1870) his parents are recorded as Robert McAdam and Agnes Campbell. However, on his death certificate (1885) it is noted that he is illegitimate and his mother is recorded as Isabella McAdam a domestic servant (who later married a Robert Turner) and there is no father recorded.

I noted that some other people were talking about Robert McAdam and Agnes Campbell and I was wondering if perhaps Robert had a sister Isabella, who might be the possible mother of my Robert McAdam.

Something else that's interesting is that my Robert McAdam gave some of his children the name Campbell as their middle name.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Casey.

Sarah Jane McAdam

On 9 August 1850, by license, Rev. H. J. Grasett performed the marriage in St. James Episcopal Church, Toronto, of John Straith, of Toronto, to Sarah Jane McAdam also of Toronto. John Straith studied ministry at Knox College and became minister in Tilbury, Ontario. He married Mary BRUCE in 1857. What happened to his first wife, Sarah Jane McAdam? I assume she probably died prior to his marriage to Mary but I do not have any information on her. I would think that Sarah was at least 18 when married, so would have been born 1832 or before.
Any information about her would be appreciated.

Re: George McAdam Girthon 1809?

The earliest record that I can positively say is my ancestor is 1841 marriage to Sarah Kennedy in Minnigaff Kirkcudbright. They had 9 children,
Elizabeth McAdam 1843
Marion McAdam 1844
Anne McAdam 1846
William McAdam 1848
Mary McAdam 1849
John McAdam 1852- went to Canada
Alexander McAdam 26 Dec 1853
Margaret McAdam 10 Jan 1854
and my relation, Andrew McAdam 25 Dec 1858

On census records he puts Girthon Kirkcudbright as his place of birth and his recorded age of 30 years in the 1841 census puts it at 1811, 43 in 1851 and 52 in the 1861 census but the wedding and banns show no parents- highly useful!

I wonder if he never himself knew his real birth year?? George seems to always be a farming labourer and farm steward- not instantly any shipping connections.

I've found lots on the rest of my family but I've not got very far with my namesake and there may be some info I don’t have.

thanks in advance,

Thanks Andrew
