Trying to find the thread that ties him to the John McAdoo line of Black Legs Creek in Inidana Twshp, PA.

Seeking family of siblings Catherine McADOO and John McADOO. Catherine McADOO married Samuel BAKER in Vallejo, Solano, CA, in 1858. Their daughter, Sarah E. BAKER b Benecia, CA, 1859; son, Charles H. BAKER, b San Francisco, CA, 1863. This family resided in Virginia City, NV, area before 1865, when Catherine McADOO BAKER filed for divorce. During the separation, pending divorce, she and her children resided with Catherine's brother John MCADOO, also in the Virginia City, NV, area. Catherine McADOO may have been born in Scotland, per a census entry in 1880, though the informant was not Catherine.
McAdoo Clan Migration: Scotland–Ireland–America

I am researching the migration of McAdoo families from Scotland to Ireland to America. I am interested in the earliest McAdoo immigrants to America, their country/county of origin, the dates they arrived, and their migration in America.

The earliest member of my branch of the family to immigrate to America was Daniel McAdoo, b. 1824, Ireland. He arrived and settled in Philadelphia about 1845. My 2X great-grandfather William, b. 1834, Ireland, immigrated about 1848-52, settling first in Philadelphia, then in Montgomery County, PA. Most of my family resided in
Eastern PA until recent years.

Thank you for your assistance.

Jim McAdoo
It is believed that the first John McAdow in my family settled with his wife Agnes in West Nottingham, Chester Co., PA about 1700 when William Penn was looking for some Scotch Irish settelers to provide a buffer between his settelers and the Indians. John (1) does not show up on the Chester Co. tax rolls until 1732. John and Agnes had four children: Andrew b. abt 1725; girl 1 b. abt. 1727 m. William Hutchman in abt 1750; John II b. abt 1729 m. Margaret Creswell in Nottingham, Chester Co., PA abt 1742; d.Oct. 1801 in Hartford Co., MD; girl 2 b. abt 1730 m. Robert Creswell abt 1750. John (II) and Margaret Creswell had 10 children most of them born in PA. The first of these was John (III) b. in Hartford Co., MD, m. Mary Burns abt. 1790 in Allegheny Co., PA d. Maysville, Mason Co., KY.

McAdoos in Wilson/Cannon TN and Saline, AR 1850 and 1860

I am trying (without much luck) to sort out the McAdoos that appear in Cannon Co. TN in the 1850. I have two households that I am most interested in because they both are in Saline Co. AR by 1860.

*John A. McAdoo 24(in Saline Co. AR 1860)
*William MCAdoo 70 NC
*Jame McAdoo 70 NC
*Eliza Pendleton 26 (She is Eliza (Alisa) McAdoo, married to Benjamin Pendleton son of Benjamin Pendleton and Ann Elkins..they married 26 Jan 1848 in Cannon Co. She is his second wife with Mary Higgins as his first)
*Olly Pendleton 5/12
*James W. Spurlock (He is son of John A. Spurlock and Cynthia McAdoo. They and their other children are in Missouri in 1850. James moves to Hot Springs (Saline)Co. Arkansas. His parents move to Randolph Co. AR by 1860. John A. Spurlock is son of Drury Spurlock and was born in Wilson Co. TN.)

*James B. McAdoo 38 (in Saline Co. AR by 1851)
*Mary McAdoo 36(She is Mary Knight..I think..she dies soon after this. James remarries in 1851 in AR to Martha Davenport Blanks)
*Elizabeth 14
*James W. 1? (in Hot Springs(Saline) Co. AR in 1860. living near James Spurlock)
*Angeline 10
*John R. 8
*Thomas 5
*Phinis Willard 19 (haven't yet found a family connection)
*Samuel Hayse 38

There are also households headed by William McAdoo 46, Martha McAdoo 49, James W. McAdoo 32.

My theory is that William and Jane McAdoo are the parents of James B, Cynthia, Eliza, William and John A. (possibly his grandparents) and the James W. and Martha 's husband are somehow also related. James B. McAdoo and John A. McAdoo are living close to each other in Benton, Saline Co. AR in the 1860 census. Can anyone help me?

Thanks
Susan
McAdoo-Brown Indiana County PA- Best Cemetary

Florence Elizabeth McAdoo Brown 1899-1969, is my husbands grandmother. Her parents were John R. and Mary V. Cook McAdoo. I am looking for any information on this family. I know that Johns parents were Robert and Elizabeth Rosborough McAdoo, but I can't seem to find out who Robert McAdoos parents or siblings were.I have also hit a brick wall with Alvah Dean Brown (husband of Florence McAdoo). I know that his mother was Bertha Lowman, Berthas father & mother Abraham Lowman and Elizabeth Hunter, Abrahams parents - Abraham Lowman and Sarah Boreland, but all I know about Alvah Deans father is that his name was Joseph Brown. If anyone out there can help with any of this it would be greatly appreciated. I will also share what I have about Alvah Dean and Florences family. Thank You
Davida
Hi,
I saw the website put together by Mildred Beasley and others about the McAdoos. This messgae concerns Eva Angelina Mcadoo, married to Columbus William Robbins in 1903. The site lists 3 children by them, but in fact, there were 6. They are Boley Lee Robbins, Lucy Rudell Robbins, Clintus Aire Robbins, William Amos Robbins, Francis May Robbins, Connie Marie Robbins, and Durward Edward Robbins. Durward Edward is my grandfather and we Robbins are all still here in Texas. Finding the info on the McAddo's was unexpected, but a delightful treat. I am researching Columbus William Robbins, and the only info I can find is from the McAdoo site. I do not know his parents names, if he had any siblings, where he was born in Mississippi. If anyone has come across this info while researching the McAdoos, I would desperately love to hear from you, he is my brick wall. Thanks so much.
Christie

Tracing My Family Roots - McCaghren/Margaret McAdoo

Hi,
I'm another relative on the tree. My cousin's husband, Jim Hudson, helped me get started by telling me about this link.

However, he erred on one point - Margaret E. (Exzine) McAdoo was not quite so far back on the tree. She was my great-great-grandmother (and my cousin's) who was married to William Franklin McCaghren. Of the children, I knew 3. Addison Burditt McCaghren ('Daddy Mac') - my great-grandfather, Aunt Frone (Sophronia), and Aunt Sis (who I thought, based on a family tree someone had done in their family, was named Dezalia, but I see here as Daisy M. so ????).

Of course, I grew up knowing Daddy Mac who was a farmer and thought the two best things of a 'man' were a good hat and a good cigar. He delivered gas for my grandfather W. F. (yes another one - called Bill) McCaghren. My dad is W.F. (initials only) McCaghren, who, like Mark Twain, in some of these histories has been marked as deceased, but is very much alive. My mother, Oleta, passed away almost 27 years ago.

I would welcome any emails, information, etc. on my family and thank whoever started this for the opportunity to meet my relatives.

Looking forward to hearing from you -

Marty D. McCaghren
513 Standing Oaks Ln.
Sealy (near Houston) Texas

BTW - Debbie and I have been married 25 years and have 3 children - Missy - 23, Mandy - 19, and Tim - 17.

He married Celia PALMER before 1828 in Henry County; they had the following children: Elizabeth, William, Thadius, Nancy, Marion, Alfred, James, Josephine, Louisa and Frances. The family moved to Weakley Co., TN, abt 1845. After the Civil War, some members of this family settled in southern Illinois, Texas and Kentucky while others remained in Tennessee.
John Mcadoo, Indiana Co., PA

I have just found a John Mcadoo in an Indiana county, PA 1820 census. I am pretty sure that he is the first name on my list of ancestors and am wondering if anyone else has him in their line. The census shows 4 males between 1-18 and a male 26-45 which would make a birthdate between 1775-1794. And shows 3 females between 1-16 and one female 26-45. It also shows 2 foreigners not naturalized. In the same census one page earlier is shows a William Mcadoo 45+ years of age and 1 female under 10 and 1 female 26-45. I don't know if this would be his father or a brother. The 2 females would probably prove him to be a brother, but they could be borders or other relatives??
Dr. John E. Mcadoo was a son of John's and I have very little info on him except that he married a Hannah McCune and had a son Calvin Poe and seemed to dissappear. Any info. would be greatly appreciated.

Trying to find more information on my great-great grandfather, Lee Andrew McAdoo. I have him being born January 1866 in Saline County, Arkansas, but the place could be wrong as well as his given name. A cousin told me it was Leander, but I had seen it as Lee Andrew in my Grandmother's Bible. Lee's daughter, Hattie Pearl, was the above grandmother's mother and he was married Caledonia Marie Raper, also know as Fannie C. Raper/McAdoo born in Tennessee. Any information would be largely appreciated as I have photos of him, but not a whole lot of other info.

Barnett McAdoo Frances Murphree
Hello, everyone!

I am another McAdoo searcher who just found this forum. I am a descendant of Barnett McAdoo, b ~1777 in North Carolina and his wife, Frances Murphree. Barnett died in January 1858, and Frances ~1867, both in the area of Huntington, Carroll County, Tennessee.

Barnett and his wife had at least 12 and possibly as many as 15 children. My line is through his son Levi Pinckney McAdoo, who was called "Pink," presumably because he had red hair. Levi was born ~1811 in Tennessee. He married Minerva Ellen Harper, also born in Tennesse ~1815. Before 1830, they had moved from Tennessee to southern Missouri, to Brush Creek (Laclede County), roughly into the area of Springfield.

Their third son was Andrew Jackson "Jack" McAdoo, whose third son was Joel Alexander "Joe" McAdoo, whose first son was Clarence J. McAdoo, whose son was Harlan McAdoo, my father.

I have a tremendous amount of information about this family, but I am still in need of proof of Barnett's father. For a long time, I believed that he was the William R. McAdoo living with Barnett's son Stephen at the time of the 1850 census. It has been pointed out to me, however, that Stephen had a son William R. who was 20 at the time of the 1860 census, so the "100" next to his name in 1850 was probably a poorly written "10."

I also have a lot of information on other early McAdoos, most of it sent to me by other McAdoo searchers. I would be happy to help anyone in any way that I can.

E-mail me here or at cwilheim@hotmail.com.

Cathy

P.S. I post family documents on both the mcadoo@onelist.com and genforum bulletin boards. I will start posting them here as well. If you have a long document you would like to see posted, send a copy of it to me by snail-mail and I will type it for you and post it. I type nearly 100 words per minute, so typing something is not problem for me at all. Besides, this way I get to see more family documents.

THE OLD NORTH STATE IN 1776

THE OLD NORTH STATE IN 1776
BY The Rev. Eli W. Caruthers, D.D. [1854 -1856]
Republished by The Guilford Co., Genealogical Society [1985]

.......Every possible exertion was made to overtake the retreating Americans; and General Graham says, "Colonel Webster, with the elite of the British army, for twelve miles pressed us so closely, as to compel Colonel Otho Williams, the commander, to fight at this place." Tarleton's corps led the column, and were supported by Webster, . They first encountered a covering party of one hundred and fifty Virginia militia, who boldly returned the fire, but were then obliged to retire over the creek, and join the main body. In this party were a number of Whigs, volunteers from Guilford county, among whom were ROBERT SHAW, WILLIAM MCADOO, and WILLIAM RYAN. Shaw was severely wounded, but was saved from falling into the hands of the enemy by McAdoo, who drew him up across the pommel of his saddle, almost under the guns of the British, and carried him away..........................

CLOSING SCENES OF THE WAR

...............The Whigs came upon them on the causeway of the Raft Swamps, each of them two or three hundred yards wide, and rode over them, cut them with their sabres, and tumbled the riders and their sand hill ponies off the causeway into the water, where probably some of them were drowned. At a certain point, they had taken their stand on the rising ground, intending to give the Whigs "Jesse," as they came out of the swamp; but as soon as they saw them, on their big western horses, rushing through like a torrent, they were frightened out of their wits and fled in utter confusion. Sixteen of them were known to have been killed and about fifty wounded. The Whigs lost one or two horses, and had one man killed, JOHN MCADOO, who was greatly lamented as a man of tried firmness and dauntless courage...............
