Re: James B McAllen 1850 Illinois

I've been out of researching for a while. I hit a wall and have been taking a rest. I don't know much about James B McCallen: born May 17, 1812, Orange county, NC, married Aug 1829 TN to Lucinda Thompson (possibly TN), died/buried Dongola IL Jan 8, 1892. He was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister that moved around quite a bit. His and Lucinda obits were in the Jonesboro Gazette of Union county, IL. The only son I'm know of being in the Civil War was William M., Union, 123 PA Infantry, born Aug 5, 1842 KY, died Greene county, MO Oct 23, 1944. Any help you can give me re: James & Lucinda particularly would be great. I'm the last McCallen on my side and am not acquainted with any.

Liz may not be actively looking, but I am. I just started the process of finding my history last fall (2008)and now I am hooked.
As it turns out we are related.
Francis M. McCallen was son of James Bowman McAllen & Lucinda (Thompson). Francis' brother James Bradly McCallen was the father of my grandmother Verna (McCallen) Elsenpeter. My father was Thomas Elsenpeter.
I am interested in anything on the McCallens, most all of James Bowman's sons served in the civil war. I would be interested in old photos or story's

My mother was a mcallen and I was adopoted and did not know my birth family history as much. her grandfather was a john mcallen. are you related to a dorothy mcallen?

I have an original postcard photograph of “Mattie L. McAllen – Shawneetown, Ills – July 24, 1873”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was likely taken on the date shown, as she looks about age 20.

I found the family of Mattie, as Mattie in 1860, and as Martha in 1870 – both in Shawneetown (Gallatin Co.) IL, and she was the daughter of Andrew and Mary McAllen. In 1860, “Mattie” was age 7, and in 1870, “Martha”, living with same parents, was age 16.

My gggrandmother Mary McAllen/McCallen, alleged born Ennis Co. Clare abt 1835, sister Bridget Ann born 1840 also Ennis & perhaps a brother Lawrence jnr born 1834 also Ennis, he may have gone to Stillwater, NY state. Mary arrived Victoria Australia ?1852 per "TYPHOON" via Greenock, Scotland. Bridget arrived Victoria 1858 per "ATLANTA"
Honora Maloney alleged born 1802 Listowel, Co. Kerry.

I have hit a deadend on trying to even begin a search on the McAllen family, My Grandfather was John McAllen who married a Dycie Moore in Vernon Parish, LA and I can not find a reference to him anywhere. They had 3 children, William (Bill) , Lavern (Red) & Imagene (Gennie). If anyone can help point me in the right direction please email me or poat a reply.

First appearance - 1900 US Federal (CN) census:
- Annie, wife, white, female, born July 1872, age 27, married, 8 years in present marriage, born Connecticut, father born Conn., mother born Conn., can read, write & speak English.

2nd entry gets weird - 1910 US Federal (CA) census:
- Annie, wife, female, white, age 35 at last birthday, married, 18 yrs of marriage, had one child, no children living, born "Can English", father "Ire-Irish", mother "Ire-Irish", immigrated 1885, able to speak English, occupation "Keeper", nature of business "Rooming House", working on own account, able to read & write, not blind, deaf or dumb.

3rd entry makes sense again - 1920 US Federal (CA) census:
- Annie, wife, female, white, married, age 45, born Connecticut, father born US, mother born US, attended school, can read & write, able to speak English, no trade or profession;

4th appearance - 1930 US Federal (CA) census:
- Annie, wife, white, age 59, age 20 at first marriage, attended school, can read & write, born in Connecticut, father born in Connecticut, mother born in Connecticut, no occupation.

These census entries all fit with what I know of her husband, Chas L Van Wert, even though that second one would better fit his 2nd wife rather than his first!?

Trying to find her family of origin, I found a Thomas McAllen in 1900 (CN) census; a James McAlen in the 1900 & 1910 census = don't know if related. Other finds were McAleer, McAloon

McAllen, John 13 Male in School born in KY

McAllen, William 7 " "
McAllen, Walker 1 Male born in Illinois
McAllen, Francis 20 Male Farmer born in TN
McAllen, Sarah 21 Female born in IL
(Francis and Sarah married within the year)

We know for sure that at least James changed the last name to McCallen

Sorry, I have an Annie McCallen - but she was born 1861 in California. It is always possible that there is a connection, but I don't know where it would be, sorry.

Thx 4 the quick response. Actually, as I look at the information in the light of day (it was very late when I found her), the birthdate is given as 2 aug 1871 (which I will need 2
verify, but the birth "place" is in brackets, so I think someone made an (educated ?) guess. I have photographic proof her husband was sheriff-ing in Fairplay, Colorado in 1900. Can't see why she would be left childless & in Connecticut to die 6 years later -- seems kind of harsh in today's standards, never mind when travel was difficult. (Of course, he could have run away from home! m. date 1892) I now see 2 that McAllen can b McCallen in some instances. I guess this will have to remain a maybe 4 awile. Do you have any documentation on your Annie?

My grandmother was the late Martha Patterson, Her father was William Patterson who died around the age of 35 about 1900. Her mother was Sarah McClintock-Patterson and she remarried to William McAllen. She had a sister MaragretPatterson and sisters Julia, Sarah, Dorothy, Bertha, Ruth, Wilamina,Elizabeth, and brothers John McAllen.Martha sister Maragret married Harry Hendrickson. Martha Mcpherson(Patterson) was born september 12,1900 and died may 1976. If anyone has any info about William Patterson or Sarah Mcclintock I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks

I have recently found of picture of the above lady, my gr-gr-gr-gr grandmother. She was married to Alexander Tait in Sackville, Canada in 1829. they had ten children. In looking up Tait, I found that she was listed as Elizabeth M. Allen, not McAllen. Anybody have any more info on her?

Sarah McAllen nee Hawthorne

Sarah McAllen was my great-aunt. She emigrated to Canada in the late 1800's from Co. Down Northern Ireland. She returned for a short visit in 1951. She died in 1966. Her late husband was Clement McAllen. Sarah had a son Harold who lived in Midland Ontario. She also had a daughter named Ruby McCaffery. She also adopted a daughter but I do not know the adopted daughter's name. Sarah died on 15th. March 1966 and the funeral service was at Chapel of Washington & Johnson 717 Queen Street E At Broadview. Internment Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Any body with any information or helpful suggstions as to how I could contact my Candadian relatives would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in anticipation
