Hi Barbara,

It has been good to hear from you as well. Most interesting to hear the direction your life has taken you. Sounds like you will be very busy over the next few months with tax season. Now to respond to few items you mentioned. You must have faced an interesting challenge to inherit two teen age daughters. If only we knew ahead the path our life's take. Exie and Sherman moved to Prescott about 1970. Lived there until they both passed away (Exie 1997). They have a grave marker in a cemetery there in Prescott. I have made many trips to the Prescott area visiting both Exie and Sherman, very nice place and much more pleasant weather than Phoenix. I remember that they called your grandfather Uncle Boyle. I did not remember his first name being James. I also recall something about a fire. What year did he die? I also recall that my Mother and perhaps Charlaine drove down to Bertha's funeral. Some personal information about me: I graduated with a degree in Accounting and an M.B.A. from U.C. Riverside in 1976. Was married in 1977 and moved away from the San Gabriel area(suburb of Los Angeles) in 1979 to Paradise, CA. Have lived here ever since and have my office in Chico, CA. My wife is a dental Hygienist and my two Children ( daughter, 29 and son, 24) both married this past year. (WOW, two weddings in one year)My daughter lives in Tennessee where she graduated from a university in Tenn. My son ended up attending the same university but he and his wife both grew up in Paradise so he is back near us. Because of the weddings I just recently spent time with both Karen & Charlaine. We are planning to get together to celebrate what would have been our fathers 100 birthday this year. By the way, Fred Seymour Jr. and his wife live in Sacramento area. We see each other about once per year. Fred is Mildred Whiteside Seymour's son. Mildred was my mother and Exie's sister. The Seymours lived many years in Lubbock Texas. Well, I could go on but suppose I've said too much. My email address is awes4@aol.com and would really appreciate you sharing any and all information you can provide me regarding the McBaine side. I have so little information. I have quite a bit of information on the Whiteside. I have really enjoyed re-connecting with you and hopefully we will chat some more. Thank you for assisting me thus far. I hope you and your husband are well. I will definitely mention that I have made contact with you to my two sisters. Sincerely, Stephen

Hi Stephen, It was good to hear from you. Sorry this took me a few days to get back to you. From Jan thru April 15 I work for H&R Block. I am the senior client service professional for a 4 office franchise. On top of starting back to work I caught a cold and have been a little under the weather. My immune system is not what it should be as I had the upper lobe of my left lung removed in Aug 2010. It had a little cancer in it but they got it all cause they caught it early. Give my regards to Charlaine and Karen. I remember all of you and what fun times we had when we came to your house or vice versa. My husband and I live in Prescott Valley, AZ. It is about 1-1/2 hours north of Phoenix in the mountains. We are at 5200 ft. altitude so we get all 4 seasons, mildly and not near as hot as Phoenix.
I remember your parents and Exie very well. At one time I thought I heard that Exie had moved to Prescott (town next to ours) but that was long before we moved here. I married at 30 and married my best friends husband. She had passed away of cancer and while I was helping him and the kids get things in order we fell in love. We had known each other a long time. I inherited two daughters ages 11 and 15. That was quite a job. When my Dad was transferred to Houston with TRW in 1965 I went with he and my Mom and went to college. I later went to work for TRW in Houston. After a few years I got a transfer back to California and lived in the Redondo Beach area. I remember Roger and Aunt Nora very well. I have a photo which I believe is Aunt Nora, me and my grandma, Bertha. I can invite you to my tree but be aware that it is 8,000+ people. You can use the list of individuals to find the McBaine's and the Whitesides. Be sure to look at all the McBaines as there are some interesting stories. They were well known in Columbia. My husband also worked for TRW in Redondo Beach but after we had finished 20 and 15 years we decided to start our own business. My only stipulation was that it be in San Diego where I was born and where my grandma still lived. My grandfather, James Boyle, had passed much earlier when the hotel he was living in caught fire. The dr. said he would have lived a lot longer except for the smoke inhalation. I know later I will think of something else to tell you but we can keep in contact. We started our business in Feb of 1979 but my grandmother fell and broke her hip either that year or the year before (see what its like to be 65 - ugh) and passed away at 97. Last thing I need your e-mail address to invite you to my tree. OK enough for this writing. Sincerely, Barbara Cope Glasgow

Well, Actually this is Stephen. My sisters are Charlaine and Karen. I recall hearing the name Leroy and Juanita Cope. In fact I met them one time at a funeral near San Diego. I probably met yuo as well. I am 58. I would really appreciate having access to your "Tree". Exie died in 1997. I took care of Exie during her final years. My mother (Helen) died in 2003. I had moved her nearby my home. I live in Paradise, Calif. which is located in Northern Calif. My dad (Chuck)died in 1975. Do you recall Roger Whitesides? He died around 2001. Charlaine lives in Santa Barbara and Karen lives near Couer d Alene, Idaho. Where do you reside?

Its interesting that you spotted my post as its been there for several years. I have obtained quite of bit of information about the Whitesides of my family tree but little do I have on the McBaine side. I appreciate whatever you can provide to me.

I hope you are well and have enjoyed learning about you.

Sincerely, Stephen Awe

Since your mother was Helen Awe and your father was Chuck you must be Karen or Charlene. Remember me? I am Barbara Cope. We used to visit you and your sister and your parents quite a bit. Your Mom and my Mom were cousins. My parents were LeRoy and Juanita (Nita) Cope.

What a small world. Where are you and what have you been up to. We probably haven't seen each other for about 45-55 years. I can't believe how much time has passed. I am 65 now. I married when I was 30. No children but I have step children and grandchildren and great grandchildren. What became of Exie. I remember her so well. Hope we can keep in touch. If you want I can give you access to my tree and you can get all the McBaine info you want. There is a lot of some of the children of Ignatius.

Barbara (Cope) Glasgow

Thank you for responding. I believe we are discussing the same family members although you've added a new name I never heard before, Igantius. I'm not surprised since I don't have much information on the McBaine side of my family. Nora McBaine Whitesides was my Grandmother. My mother was Helen Awe. I met "Uncle Boyle" only once in San Diego when I was young. I believe his wife was Bertha? I also met "Uncle John" once in Columbia,Missouri. But I was only about 7 years old at the time. Can you provide me with any additional information on the McBaine family ancestry?

I guess I should check these message boards more often. I am the granddaughter of James Boyle McBaine, the great granddaughter of Fremont C. McBaine, the great great granddaughter of Hezakiah McBaine and the great great great granddaughter of Ignatius Donald McBaine. I knew Nora McBaine Whitesides when I was a child. Even tho my grandparents were separated she was a good friend of my grandmother's (James Boyle's wife). If I can help you let me know. Barbara

I have Donald McBean 1787 m Jean McGrigor 1794 They lived in Tullisol of Raitts and had Margaret, Amelia, Duncan, Malcolm, Jane and Maria (twins) then Alexander. They were all born between 1818 - 1826 . Alexander emmigrated to Melbourne Australia in 1852. I have found the information that 11 McBean/McBain families were kicked out when the clearances by James McPherson demolished the town. It is a great site to visit.
I have only just found out that Dopnald had a sister Ann born 1783 so I am on the research ship once again. I will keep you informed if I find anything.

TezzaNZ

Hey 0 this is unusaul I think, in that the process was usually the other way around, i.e. Bains becoming McBains (since "Mc" means "son of") was the usual pattern, and Bain is older.

Maybe there was more clout in being a Bain than a McBain in terms of status?

Congrads on breaking the brick wall:)

C McBain

Hi. I have a theory - and it is only a theory - that Donald and Margaret had to run away. The area around Kiltarlity is Grant country and (although I haven't been able to prove it) Margaret may well have been of the laird's family and therefore not allowed to marry Donald. She was also very young when they moved. Sadly, I haven't been able to get up to Kiltarlity to investigate the churchyard or church records and there are too many possibles in Scotlandspeople. Its very useful to know that Lauchlan was married twice, that might open up another avenue of research for me!

gordon1905

I have just worked out (after 6 years!) that my ggggrandfather Lauchlan Bain (b Channelkirk 17 April 1795) was also known as Lauchlan McBain and as such appears in at least 6 Ancestry Public Trees. And it would seem from these trees that he too was a son of Donald McBain & Margaret Grant.

Lauchlan was probably born in the village of Oxton [wrongly transcribed in Ancestry.com as "Ugston") in the parish of Channelkirk.

It seems that he was married twice. First, according to handwritten records handed down through my family to Mary Gibson (b. 20 March 1795; d 9 June 1837). This is confirmed by at least one family tree. They had ten children -
Elizabeth Bain b 16 Oct 1816
Margaret Bain b 31 July 1818 (my gggrandmother)
Alexander Bain b 16 June 1820
Jean Bain b 10 June 1822
John Bain 19 June 1824
Mary Bain 12 June 1826
Agnes (not Angus) Bain 12 Oct 1828
Charles Bain 13 Dec 1830
Cathren Bain 2 March 1833
John Bain 12 July 1835

Lauchlan's second wife was Margaret Symington (m. c 1839) by whom he had at least one son, Andrew b c 1840.

Does anyone know why the surname was changed from McBain to Bain? And why Donald McBain moved from Kiltarlity, Invernesshire to Berwickshire? Was this anything to do with the Highland Clearances or the aftermath of the '45 Rebellion?

Any info on this Bain/McBain family line would be very much appreciated? Many thanks.

The Culloden prisoner lists are published. I found a copy at the old visitor center at Culloden, where it was just inside the door. I have heard it is still available, but you have to ask. The particular group I transcribed were members of Colonel Anne Mackintosh's Regiment. (posting under a different account, but same person as the prior note re. Culloden).

Hi

Sorry cannot help you. Since I posted this back in 2008 I have now found out my Alexander McBain was born in 1853 in St Nicholas Aberdeen and his parents were Alexander McBain 1827 and Henrietta Munro 1833.

He married Phoebe DeSola in Mile End, London and they had 6 children.

Good luck in your search

Carole
I, too, am looking for an Alexander McBain. I believe the one that was a grocer who died in St Nicholas is the correct one. However, I have him marrying Rachel Hay, not Rachel Henry. The son Alexander (age 25) that you mention may not have been the only Alexander as I have seen another Alexander record indexed:

Alexander McBain b. 5 Jul 1849, c. 26 Jul 1849 Kinnellar, Aberdeen, Scotland, s/o Alexander McBain & Rachel Hay.

There are also sibling records for Rachel, Alexander, William, and James. (Rachel's record is spelled "McBean".)

Do you know if this is the same Alexander McBain? I believe (but could be mistaken) he was born in Dunlichtly, Inverness-shire, Scotland.

Thanks for any info you might have.

Brian

Alexander McBain and Rachel Hay

I have just started researching this family, however, my gg grandmother was Jessie McBain (b. 26 Jul 1854 Kinellar, Scotland) who married Samuel Poole Greenlaw. Her parents were Alexander McBain and Rachel Hay (m. Old Machar, Aberdeenshire, Scotland 25 Jun 1846).

As best I can tell, they had at least children Rachel, Alexander, Elisabeth, William, and James between 1847 and 1859.

I believe that Rachel Hay's parents were William Hay and Rachel Rainey (m. 13 May 1810 New Deer, Scotland) and that she had a brother William born 10 Feb 1815 in New Deer.

Alexander McBain may have been from Inverness-shire. Does anyone have information on this family?

Hi Janet, I sort of gave up on my quest for info regarding Margaret Hughes and James McBain didn't realise you had left me a post. Don't know if this could be the same Margaret but the little I know of them is that Margaret had a daughter brought up by her Mother. She married James McBain a railwayman and moved to Duke Street in Glasgow around 1925/26, he may have got a transfer with the railway to Glasgow, am unsure. They had a son James born March 1926 and think they may have moved again not long after. Can't find any info after that time..........Allan

I'm currently working on the Bayne side of our family tree and wanted to know if you found anything beyond Noonan Bayne. Also, do you know more about Samuel Leola? It seems that he is Nanny (your Great-Aunt JoAnn's maternal grandfather). I'm trying to find more information on him, including the name of his wife.

Hope to hear from you. I also have McBain ancestors from the Inverness area, one Donald McBain b. abt 1766 in Kiltarlity and married Margaret Grant in 1788. However, thats about all the info I have here. can anyone put some more flesh on those very bare bones?
Going back a bit further, but not necessarily a connection. I have William McBean and John McBean of Drumlanvel, of Croy and Dalcross parish registering children in the 1720s and 1730s. That William is possibly the father of another William (1727) who emigrated to Derry and then South Carolina, giving rise to one of the largest groups of Beans in the USA (and me). John had a son Donald (1722) and then there is no further reference.

Records of prisoners of the '45 include: a Donald MacBean of Inverness (age 28) was captured as part of Lady Anne MacKintosh's regiment at Culloden, but no one seems to know what came of him. Another Donald from Corimonie, GlenUrquhart joined Glengarry's regiment the day before Culloden and was captured then transported. A third Duncan or Donald from Inverness, a farmer near the River Nairn, age 30 (ca. 1716), imprisoneed and transported. And seven John MacBeans, one also from Corimonie and Glengarry's regiment (so possibly the same John and Donald pair above) - transported. Another John from Inverness-shire, age 44 (possibly about right for father John), imprisoned about Jane of Leith and never heard of again.

Along another line, there is a Donald MacBean of Miltown of (illeg.) m. Isabel MacKintosh with five registerd children of Croy and Dalcross, between 1731 and 1740), of which one was named Donald MacBean, Oct 8, 1738, and another John MacBean b. Apr 8, 1732. The family moved to Culdouch by 1740.

I hope you see this, you can reach me at (transpose the unexpected letters and numbers first) M@rk_B3@n@v3rizon.n3t

Hello There,

Do you know when Alexander McBain was born. I've been told
my g-g-g-grandfather had a brother Alexander McBain.
Gilbert McBain was born in 1793, and from the information I
have we don't know when he arrived in this country, and where he landed when he did. He is suppose to have brothers
Duncan, John, William, and I have g-g-g-uncles, son's of
Gilbert and Agnes (Nancy) H. McBain that we know of. We think he came through Canada, but we think he was in this
country by 1820, because of a census done on the William
McBane family. William may have been his father.
The information I was told, that each of the brothers came
separately to this county, and so many spellings it hard to
trace them. Gilbert and Nancy lived in Fox township, Carroll county, Ohio, some of their children came to Richland county, WI between 1857 and 1874 and settled in
Richland township. They were Duncan (my g-g-grandfather),
James, David, and Gilbert Jr. Any information would be
helpful.

Thank You,

Carol McBain

Is Sarah the daughter of Duncan
McBain, and Harriet Williams McBain. Duncan and Harriet are
my g-g-grandparents, and were born in Caroll county, Ohio
probably Fox township, and lived in Town of Bloom, Richland
County, WI, and later in Vernon county, WI. They are both
buried in East Pine Ridge Cemetery in Richland county, WI.
There oldest son Edward Elwood McBain, is my great grandfather, he was also born in Fox township, Carroll county, WI in 1854, and traveled as a child to Town of Bloom
Richland county, WI. The rest of their children except
Erwin and Minta May McBain (Twin) were born in Kansas.
My grandfather was William Henry McBain he and Christina Walling oldest son.
Hi Lillian,

I'm writing because it's been so long since I have been to
Richland Center, WI. I meant to come down, but this year has been so different. What were you mentioning on the McBain research about James McBain. Do you have a picture
of Peter McBain home in Jefferson county, Ohio, and possibly
John MacBain in Carroll county, Ohio. I also e-mail with a
gal who is related to John MacBain, and the reason I spell it "Mac" is because that's the way he spelled his name.
I've found it both way on the internet. This gal name is
Carol Dean Ford, and she lives right in Carrollton. She
just e-mailed me because she saw the McBain name, and we
exchanged some information, and the more I got the more I
was sure we were related.

Keep in touch, and you can e-mail me at cmcbain@charter.net.

Carol McBain

Yes - it is same family - I've been to Alvie and seen grave - that's what set me on the Teeswater trail. Lachlan McBain was my ggg grandfather. Tell me - who was the other Mcbain addict - I wonder if he/she is related to me.
regards,
Linda

Dear Jana,

I see you are an associate genealogist for Clan MacBean in Quebec and Ontario. Is there another person that would handle Saskatchewan or could you help me?

I am looking for the marriage of Hattie (Marion McBain) to someone with the sername of CARTER, between 1911 and 1926 in Sask and whether they may have had any children.

Marion married in BC in 1927 to Edward JACKMAN, who is my Great Uncle and listed her name as Marion CARTER, father Hugh CARTER and mother Agnes JOHNSON.

Her death information match the birthdate for Hattie McBain in 1893 and her father Hugh Alexander McBain is buried next to her in Seatac Washington, so I'm fairly confident I have the right people, but the CARTER name is a mystery.

I actually think most of the children of Hugh Alexander McBain and Agnes Johnston must have married in Sask, but I don't see any online resources to check.

Your help would be most appricated.

Many thanks,

Kim Rancans

My McBains were from Lancaster, Glengarry.
I was unable to find the nemes that you mentioned on my "Tree".
My GGG grdpts. were Wm. McBean (1751-1849) and Christina McDonald (1749-1847).
My GG grdpts. were Farquhar McBain (1786-1865) and Jane McBain (cousin) (1789-1868).
My G. grdpts. were Alexander F. McBain (1819-1901) and Sarah Ann(e) Parkhill (about 1833-1922). These are the two that I am having trouble in locating their burial place.
My grandparents were Ricard Bruce (1865-1953) and Catherine Snider(1869-1932).
My parents were Stewart McBain(1899-1959) and Vera Hudson(1909-1990).
I don't know if this will help you. Most likely your McBains and mine were related some way, since they come from the same area in Ontario.
Feel free to contact me if I can help you with any more info. that I may have.

If anyone reading this posting has any info. on Alexander F. and Sarah Ann(e), please contact me.

Pat

Hello Fiona

I have a Georgina McBean in my family tree born in 1861. Her father was William McBean and he lived in Dunachton, Alvie. Georgina lived with her father as shown on the 1871 census. Her mother was Jane Clark from Strone, Kingussie. She was my great, great grandmother and Georgina was her daughter but she wasn't married to William McBean. In 1866 she married Charles Douglas from Perthshire. William McBean married Jessie Comby and he died on 3rd May 1889. Georgina married James McLean in Alvie and died in 1952 at the age of 91. Only found this out yesterday so it was a bit of a shock to find this out as Jane had several children by Charles Douglas. Isabella (Bell) Clark was Jane's sister and she died whilst living as a general servant at William McBean's house. She had gastroenteritis.
