Scottish and American McCaffertys

Emma McCafferty  (View posts) Posted: 18 Jun 2000 1:47AM GMT
I'm a member of the McCafferty family living in Scotland. We've guessed that our family came over the waters from Ireland. We have family in California, Called the Dorans. I just wondered if there was any one who know any McCaffertys living in Scotland or Dorans from California. The Dickie family are also relations of ours in Scotland through the re-marrage of my great gran after her husband died. Any way I'd love to hear from you all and any other McCaffertys out there.

My grandfather Patrick McCafferty went from Scotland to America before WWar one. He was a stone mason and as far as I know lived in Samuels Kentucky, re-married(my grandmother died in Scotland)though I do not know much more than that about the second marriage. He had a connection with the Convent in Samuels. He took the three oldest children with him, Alec Margaret and I do not know the name of the last son. Five children were left with relatives in Scotland. My mother was Bessie Dorien.

My grandfather William McCafferty and his borther Johnny McCafferty came from Scotland in the late 1800 or early 1900's and finally settled in Bokoshe, OKlahoma. They worked in the coal mines there. His mother was still living when he came over and it is my understanding he left brothers and/or sisters behind also. In the 1950's my mother communicated by mail with some of the relatives in Scotland but I'm not sure where. I remember we sent a Christmas present of a cowboy shirt to a young male cousin in Scotland and a reply said he wanted to know if there were really cowboys in OKlahoma. My mother is now 83 and her memory is not very good. My grandfater died in 1951(around that time). Uncle Johnny had quite a few children and I know some of them have visited the Scottish family. My mother is the only living child of William (Billy) McCafferty; her mother, 2 sisters and brother having passed on. If you think this might tie-in with your family, please send me more info. I will try to get more detail from my mom, I will be going to OKlahoma Labor Day weekend. Waiting to hear from you. Shirley Fortner

Maureen,
I just came across your message. My mother is a McCafferty, her father (Patrick) from Donegal. I have just located relatives in Ireland, Scotland and England. If you go to genforum.com you will see our messages (we also have others with more info that we are just e-mailing each other. Perhaps you are yet another found cousin, here is hoping. E-mail me if you like with any other info you have and we can try to confirm. Also, check the site I got the match on, perhaps he can give you confirmation if I am unable to. I look forward to hearing from you.

Looking for info Re: Any relatives still alive in either Ireland, or Scotland.
My grandfather's name is Patrick Mc Cafferty.
He came to the USA around 1926.
My Grandmother's name was Isabel.
They had 3 children-Neil, Isabel, & George.
I know that my Uncle Neil passed away a few years ago, but I did meet Him once, when He was working on The Queen Mary (as a Chef).

Hi Maureen...
All I really know is that I'm Scotch/Irish/American. My grandfather's name is Harry McCafferty. And I know he has a brother named Reilly McCafferty. Not sure if we are related or not but trying to trace my heritage.

Hi George well there is many McCafferty's well and alive in Scotland. I'm one of them. However there is only one boy left to carry on the name. Thats my brother, so hopefully he'll have some boys. The oldest McCafferty I know of is my Grandads aunt who lives in America and is in her late 90's,she married though so no longer has the name.
