I read your post and also have an Ed McCaffery who lived with my great grandmother on Oakdale St just a couple blocks away from St Anne Church. This was in the 1900 census. After ordering his death certificate found him to be her uncle and her mother was a Margaret McCaffery. Edward's parents where John and Margaret Kelly. They where from near Roosky, Co Donegal.

Wrote on your email - but after they married they left for Colorado with my grandmother Mercy - her child. Mercy was baptized there. Eveline did not meet up to his expectations - did not keep up her end of the work - so he abused them. So she packed up and moved back to SLC. This was my grandmother's version - so was one-sided.

Yes, I am the great grandaughter of Eveline Tuckett McCafferty - I was 18 years old when she died in SLC, UT.
Eveline was born in Virginia City but because her mother died when she was young - was raised by Aunt & Uncle and took their name - so is listed when she married William McCafferty as Eveline Rawson...of which I found the marriage record when I went to the Virginia City Court House. What is your relationship to her?

Re: McCafferty family research

FAMILY RESEARCH IN SCOTLAND

If you are new to family history, research and genealogy there are initial sources to start your tree.

a) Begin by asking your immediate family and seek older family members or friends for their memories, note full names, important event dates, locations and occupations. Ask where your ancestors are buried and check graveyard headstones or graveyard record books - many are now digitised.

b) Search for family papers: old letters, postcards (note the date and postmark), birth certificates etc, official papers and photographs. Birth, death and marriage certificates are important sources of information.
Census returns are a boon.
Old photographs can reveal a wealth of information - look at the period, clothes, background and objects within the photo.
A bit of detective work may provide a name to an unknown portrait.

c) Family research in Scotland can be done at larger local libraries, within local family history societies or through:

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

*Note: The majority of Scottish on-line records are avaiable ONLY on the ScotlandsPeople website. English, Scottish and Irish records are organised within the respective countries of the UK.

d) There are many family history websites available some free, some expensive. Do your groundwork before you start your searches. Try a GOOGLE search for a person - it may add some relevant information.

e) If you are looking, for example, a 'Jock McCafferty' born in Scotland try to find or estimate his date of birth, marriage or death. Look at his occupation - this might determine where he would be living and working eg. a shipyard rivetter or engineer would be possibly located in the west of Glasgow or a miner in the vacinity of coal mining such as Lanarkshire to the east of Glasgow. Read up on occupations and get a map.

f) An ancestor may have been a Journeyman or Master within an ancient and traditional craft and would have been a member of an Incorporation (Trade Guild) eg: Incorporation of Bakers, Incorporation of Weavers, Incorporation of Hammermen.
Cities and towns throughout Scotland had their own independant Incorporations. Books published since the early 20th century list many members of their respective Incorporation. Many of these old Trade Incorporations are extant and function as charitable organisations.
- BE AWARE - most early craftsmen were members of the Established Church (Church of Scotland etc). They were also required to become Burgesses of their town or city.
Lists of early apprentices with a 'calling' to a particular Incorporation have recently been published through antiquarian, historical, antique collecting and genealogical societies.
Incorporations existed in Ireland and some in England although in England different terminology is used eg. Incorporation of Bakers would be The Bakers Company or The Company of Bakers.

g) Religion (might be obvious = Irish Roman Catholic if from the Irish Republic). Most people adhere to the religion of their ancestors but others do change through marriage or choice. Church records and published church histories may help. Find where an ancestor lived and a local parish church will probably be the place they worshiped. The church may have records.

h) Most ancestors can be traced back to their specific county of origin eg. McCafferty = Donegal
If you have a general idea of a vacinity where an ancestor lived try a surname search on a site such as :
www.genesreunited.co.uk
Go to: SEARCH ALL TREES
Enter SURNAME and BIRTH PLACE (you may enter more details if required)
A list of names will appear - browse through, note and think.

A more specific refrence to the name McCafferty in Donegal, Ireland will be found in GRIFFITHS VALUATION DONEGAL
Observe the spelling variartions of the name McCafferty in the various villages throughout Donegal.

The local history website for Donegal is excellent:
http://www.dun-na-ngall.com
Look at the genealogy area of the website.

i) If you roughly know when an ancestor emigrated to the USA visit:
www.ellisisland.org
The ships manifest may show a wealth of information. When looking through a manifest note other people from the same area - they could be relatives or friends.

j) Be aware that when researching a name eg. 'Jock' his proper name would be 'John' or that McCafferty might be written by an official as MacCafferty, McCafrey or any other possible variation.

k) Many people from Ireland sought work and migrated to the larger towns and cities in Scotland and England during the early-mid 19th century. Glasgow, Dundee, Liverpool etc.
Migrants would often relocate within familiar communities and live beside relatives. When moving home (before the 20th century) a person or family may have moved next door or across the street.

Enjoy.

Marge,

I moved from Glasgow in 1974 to work in Amsterdam and returned to the UK in 1975 to work in London. St Albans, just outside north London, has been my home since 1986. I am an advertising photographer,

I am age 61 and my two brothers, John age 57 and Robert (Bob) age 53, both live near each other in Hampshire which is south of London. John was in the communications business and Bob works at Heathrow Airport as an aircraft engineer (ex-Royal Air Force and Gulf War vet). John also owns a home in Florida :-)

I frequently visited the US in the 1980's and made a trip to Fort Defiance, AZ where Patrick McCafferty was working on the building of the mission. This was during the early days of my family history research and I did not know much about your mother Margaret at that time, otherwise I would have made an effort to visit Todd Co.

John T. McCafferty, a son of Francis McCafferty (your mother's uncle) lived in Louisville, KY. About 1990 he gave me a copy of his personal family researches on the McCafferty's including his vacation of discovery to Ireland and Scotland. If you would like a copy I can arrange to get it to you.

Your mother had another sister called Mary. She married Bob McLennan, a slater and roofer, and remained in Glasgow. Her daughter Mary married John Docherty, had many children and emigrated in the early 1960's to Minneapolis. Both Mary and John are dead but their children, mostly involved in law, are in Minneapolis and throughout the USA.
Willie McClennan (brother of Mary in Minneapolis) who lives in Glasgow and now in his 80's, visited Alex McCafferty sn. in Utah during the 1960's.
He met Alexs' children: Alex Cameron jr. and Patricia. Don, his other son, could not visit from Coloarado. Both Cameron (WW2) and Don (Korea) were USMC. Patricia married Blaine Cluff and lived in San Diego, CA.

I am not sure if your mother visited Willie when he was in Salt Lake City or chatted to him by telephone. Anyway, they did catch up. Bessie your mother's sister, I knew very well. She lived opposite my grandparents and was a daily visitor.

You can contact me: oldpewter@yahoo.com

Take care,

James
wonderful to hear from you. My ancestry hunting has been quiet for awhile so it is great to get a boost. It is kind of funny that today is the day i hear from my extended family as my sons have left for Ireland this afternoon.

I am Margart's granddaughter, and named after her as well, daughter of her son Jimmy or Jim as he grew up to be. Margaret and Jim Sr. had daughter Norma Jean who was adopted, it was always kind of secret about the adoption, so i don't know much about that. 3 years after Norma came to the family they had a baby boy, Jim Jr. (my dad) he was their natural child. Margaret had many miscarriages and stillborn babies before my Dad was born, then 1 more stillborn baby after my Dad, i believe that was the last baby. Margaret was a teacher at a country school that was located on their land. She was a wonderful teacher, and her students always did very well when they went on to high school and college. Jim Sr. was a farmer/rancher, mostly raising cattle. Grandma and Grandpa (Margaret and Jim Sr) passed away in 1976, within 4 months of each other, Margaret passing away first.

Norma married Frank Shaw, who was in the US Airforce, and they traveled a great deal when their children were young. They had 2 children Mike who is 54 and Carol who is 51. Norma and Frank now live in Rapid City, South Dakota and she is about your age. They have had numerous health issues, but both are doing pretty well now.

My Dad Jim Jr. married Barbara, and they had 3 children, myself (Margaret called Marge) age 52, Jim III age 51, Bill age 49. Dad worked on the ranch with Grandma and Grandpa until they passed away, then he had a hard time staying there, it was too sad, they both died of cancer and it was pretty hard on them and everyone. They began a career in real estate. Dad, Jim Jr. passed away in 2001, from a sudden heart attack. My mother is still living.

I am sorry I am not able to give you many details beyond my immediate family, i never met Alex, but I know grandma was quite proud of him. She spoke of him often and corresponded with Bessie till the end. I heard from a cousin Rena Scones a little over a year ago, have you been in touch with her?

Where are you living? I would be very interested to hear more from you. thank you for the message.

I am researching the Johnson family from Partick, Glasgow and the McCafferty family from Crosslee and Houston, Renfrewshire, Scotland.

Mary Ann (McCafferty) Johnson was my grandmother. Her brother, Patick McCafferty, emigrated to Colorado, USA and worked as a contracted stone mason on many of the now historic buildings in the Western States of the USA.

James Johnson

I am the grandson of James Johnson and Mary Ann (McCafferty) Johnson who lived in Partick, Glasgow, Scotland. My grandmother was the sister of Frank and Patrick McCafferty, stone masons, who emgrated to the USA in 1907 and 1910 respectively and initially worked in Colorado. The McCafferty family were of Irish descent from Bundoran Parish, Donegal, Ireland and had lived around the villages of Crosslee/Houston, Renfrewshire, Scotland from the mid-19th century.

Your grandmother Margaret McCafferty and her sisters were cared for by my grandparents after Patrick's first wife, Christina (Cameron) McCafferty, died in childbirth. Alex Cameron McCafferty and his brothers were cared for by their aunt Ellen (McCafferty) Duff/More and lived in Ayr, Scotland.
Both Margaret and her brother, Alex Cameron McCafferty, emigrated to Todd Co, SD in 1920 to join their father Patrick McCafferty and his second wife Maude Livers. Margaret married James E. Mann and remained in SD, Alex Cameron McCafferty decided that ranching was not a great career choice and became a professional golfer in Salt Lake City, UT. Patrick returned with Maude to her family home in Samuels, Nelson Co., KY.

I have more information on the McCafferty family but your history would be an interesting addition. I have visited the East Coast, AZ, CA, TX but never SD. Next time, perhaps.

James Johnson

I have been researching my grandmother Mary Ann McCafferty born 1882 in Crosslee/Houston, Renfrewshire, Scotland.
She married James Johnson in 1913 and lived in Partick, Glasgow. My grandmother's brothers, Francis (Frank) and Patrick (Paddy), both stone masons, emigrated to the USA and found contract building work in Colorado. Patrick's children, Alexander Cameron and Margaret by his first marriage to Christina Cameron , emigrated to South Dakota in 1920 to join their father and his second wife Maude Livers (from Samuels, KY) who were working at St Francis school in Todd County.
Margaret McCafferty married a rancher called James E. Mann and lived in Todd County until her death in 1976.
Alex Cameron McCafferty moved on to become a professional golfer, married, lived and worked in Salt Lake City, Utah and died in 1968. I remember my great aunt Bessie Kennedy very well.

James Johnson

My uncle (above) emigrated to Durban. South Africa in 1920.
He became a member of the Town Council in the Borough of Durban and was Deputy Mayor in 1931 -1932. He has the letters F.I.S.S.A after his name- what is that qualification? His address at the time was 50 Fleming Johnston Rd. Did he have a family? During WW2 he had a PO Box number in Johannesburg and I have reason to believe it may have been a military address: as a soldier in the Black Watch during WW1 I think he may have returned to a S A regiment with close links to the Black Watch. Help appreciated.

Ethel and Ben had 5 children, My father being the youngest of 5 boys. They were raised in East Boston Mass. I did not know that Ethels mothers maiden name was McCafferty until yesterday!
You mentioned Margaret McCafferty do you know if her maiden name was Kelly? I have an Edward McCaffery (McCafferty) who died in Philadelphia 1906, his death certificate gives parents John and Maggie Kelly.

I would bet they are related. Mary A. McCafferty - my dad's grandmother, was born in Ireland on May 12,1868 and died 9-16-1936 in Clark County Ohio. I think Tremont City. I believe that her parents were Patrick and Margaret McCafferty, both born in Ireland, but haven't gotten any further than that.

Do you have idea where your family is buried? I grew up in Clark County and still have lots of family there.

I have a Mary McCafferty living in Clark County, born in Ohio about 1828. Presume that McCafferty was her maiden name ? My McCafferty's have been a real hard bunch for me as well. I have: Neal McCafferty b: 1783 (approx.) Ireland
Wife: Mary (?) b: 1789 (appro.) Ireland
Katherine b: 1812 Ireland (my g-g gr'ma)
James b: 1822 Maryland
Mary b: 1828 Ohio
Ellen b: 1829 Ohio

James and Mary died without children, Ellen probaby married but I can't find anything on her. There may well have been more children between Katherine and James but, again, haven't found anything solid. Neal, Mary, James & Mary all lived around Harmony/S. Vienna. Would love to find any links to my McCafferty's.

I am also a descendant of John "Jack" McCafferty and Betsy Byrd thru son Green McCafferty--sons John, Thomas and Green moved to Daviess Co., Indiana. John and Thomas married Palmer sisters and Green married Letitia Gregory.

I have another generation, i.e. that John McCafferty, b. 1799 in South Carolina, d. 1848 in Daviess Co., and Susannah Palmer had a son Anderson McCafferty, born 1819 in Daviess Co.
He married Nancy Comer. Their son Thomas Benton McCafferty, 1839/1840-1 Nov. 1896, married Martha L. Brown 19 Jan. 1865.
They were parents of Charles A. born about 1869.

I have three great great great uncles born in Ireland, John McCafferty born June 1832, Phillip McCafferty born June 1832, Edward McCaffery (sic) born 1839 parents John McCaffery (sic) and Maggie Kelly. The brother's immigrated to Philadelphia at different times. They also had a sister Margaret who married Bernard Loughery and stayed in Ireland (Upper Rooskey) All Saints Parish, Co Donegal. I think there must be more siblings. I belive there was a James.

Hello Barbara, My name is Richard Ream and I happen to be looking around and found your Query about the McCafferty.I'm taking a "shot in the dark" about the family. I have im my possession quite a few historical documents about this family. To start, I have James McCafferty Naturalization paper from 1831 or 36. In this time period King William the 4th was King of England These are the original copies of the Journal in the Common Pleas Court in Brown County, Ohio. Second person is Edward McCafferty and I have his Naturalization Papers of 1844. Queen Victoria was Queen of England at this time.I have a deeds and surveying reports and many other items. Also have a Barnard McCafferty born around 1823? I think. I can't find any info on Ancestry.Com because I don't have any birthdate or death dates or any basic info for me to do any reseach with.So my ? is are thes related to you or any McCafferty in your family? I would like to find the families and they might be intereted in these historical records. I have more then 25 or 30 different records.
