My McCafferty's (father Neil/Neal - wife Mary) arrived in Ohio circa 1825 - first to Guernsey County and finally settling in Clark County from Maryland. Census says from Ireland (1808-1812)but I think originally from Scotland. Had 4 known children (Katherine b.1812, James 1822, Mary 1828, Ellen 1829). I'm sure there must have been at least a couple between Katherine (my gggrandmother) and James but have no records. Would love to find link to other McCafferty's in Ohio. Katherine married John Betts and lived in London, OH (Madison County).

My gt-grandmother was Bridget McCafferty daughter of Charles McCafferty and Sarah Kerr or Carr.
Bridget was born about 1864 somewhere around Ramelton - Burt - St Johnston in Co Donegal. Perhaps near the Derry border.
She married Joseph Curran (son of Patrick Curran and Catherine Stevenson) at the R C chapel of Burt about 1883.
Bridget had 1 brother that I know of, James McCafferty born 1866 at Fannet Co Donegal, he married Elizabeth O'Donnel in Dunbartonshire Scotland.
Bridget's known sisters were Sarah who married Hugh Doherty/Docherty in Co Donegal and came over to Dumbarton with the rest of the McCaffertys, around 1888 - 90.
Other sisters were Roseann and Mary who also married in Dumbarton.

According to the 1910 U.S. Census, Neil P. McCafferty and his wife Hannah A. (Green) had 9 children, 8 surviving. The children's names and ages given were: Neil J. 27, Mary A. 25, John A. 22, Rosa A. 19, Winifred C. 14, Daniel E. 11, Catherine 4, and Vincent J. 2. Also living at 544 Ridge Ave. with the McCafferty family was Hannah's mother, Rose (Waters)Green, age 75.
I'm guessing that Mary became Mamie or Mame and grew younger at each succeeding census.
Hannah was the sister of my great grandmother, Frances.

Dear Connie: You are very kind to offer assistance vis-a-vis any connection of the David Shelby, b 1792, PA, who married a Jane McCafferty in Mason County, KY, to the McCaffertys under your review. This one has befuddled me now for almost 15 years. Perhaps Abraham's lineage will offer a clue. I have not visited Bracken County. Good luck and thanks again.

Francis Keenan

It will take me awhile to get through the various sources I have found re: Abraham McCafferty to see if I can tease out anything about your Shelby/McCafferty connection. Abraham was in Bracken County, KY in 1796, the year it was formed from Mason County. I plan a trip to Bracken County sometime this summer and will keep your message in mind. Maybe something will present itself.
The Strandberg person you mention is most likely not connected to us. My husband's family is Strandberg by "adoption" back in Sweden in 1870.
Connie McCafferty Strandberg
NC - Will McCafferty - John Springs bill of sale 1785 Mecklenburg County, NC

Is anyone familiar with a Will MCafferty in the late 1700s in Mecklenburg. I have located a deed abstract that has him selling 3 slaves to John Springs, Jr. I have been looking for a slave by the name of Nancy Springs, born in 1780 whom I believe is an ancestor of mine who was owned by a member of the Springs family. I am trying to trace her back to Africa. I am trying to find out who McCafferty was, where he lived and how he came to have those three slaves. I could not find any McCaffertys in 1790, 1800 or 1810 census in Mecklenburg. I found one in Pennsylvania in 1790. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Charles McCafferty from Ireland m. Mary ann Johnston from Ireland, on the 1861&1871 Scotland Census they had seven children all born in Rutherglen Lanarkshire cant find them in later census either Scotland or England, they are my great grandparents their youngest daughter was Mary b.1874 m Timothy Mansell; they lived in Ashington Northumberland. It appears from the 1871 census that Charles had a brother and his family in Scotland also, Thomas Mccafferty m. Helen Burke, they all lived at 130 Main Street Rutherglen & poss. John Mccafferty and Mary ann Haney I know its a long shot as there seemed to be many Mccafferty's in the census. but anything sound familiar. Best Wishes Vivienne
