My great-great grandfather, Patrick McCaffrey, lists his birthplace as Vermont. Does anyone have any records or knowledge of McCaffreys settling in Vermont before 1850? Patrick eventually moved to Hamilton Ohio, but I dont know if the rest of his family followed, or if they stayed behind in Vermont. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

This is interesting.I have a James McCaffrey who came from Ireland to New York City in or about 1857. I have his parents who were a James McCaffrey and Briget Finan. It is possible there was another brother who also came here by the name of Patrick. I believe my James McCaffrey was born about 1846. It seems likely he would have travelled with an older relative since he was only about 11 years old.

Do you have any new or other information on this John and Mary? I am looking for a John McCaffrey in NYC myself. Mine would have been born in Ireland anywhere between 1800 - 1830, in NYC by 1857 where I found him on E.11th St., working as a grocer. This John will either had a brother or parent by the name James and at the very least a tie to an Anna b. 1834- 1836.

The HOWLEYs from Queen's Co., Ireland caught my eye! My great-grandparents Thomas Keating and Elizabeth Fanning were from the Arles(Rushes)area, Queen's Co., Ireland. Their son Michael married Mary Howley in 1875, in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Mary's death cert. shows she was born in 1856 in Buffalo, New York, to Edward HOWLEY and ??? Sheridan, both born in Ireland. Have had no luck with the censuses in NY - the best leads proved wrong. Why? when? and how? did Mary end up in PA? Do you have a Keating connection? I need to look under the Hauley spelling.

Hi Philip, Do you know if any of your McCaffrey-Dooley family made it to the NYC area? My Great Great Grandmother was Anna/Anne McCaffrey Ronan (1835-1917)parents James and Elizabeth. Her Daughter Anna, my Great Grans lived with my mother until 1962 upon her death. When my mother passed and I started the family tree I found a funeral card for an Ethel Dooley. So far the majority, I have discovered, have a family tie to my mom's maternal or paternal side. I will have to look up the ship again but I did think my GG Grandmother came over with a Dooley as this Anne was right age, a dressmaker (daughters sited as such on census reports)and they arrived in NYC (late 1840-early 1850's). I know there is some connection to a John and Hugh who were listed as Grocers from 1855-1857 as they lived next door to my GG Grandfather Patrick Ronan in 56&57 (Anna married by Summer 57). I think that there is a chance they are either Anna's brothers or her Uncles as I found a James, also a grocer a few blocks away.

Danielle

I was hoping and wondering if someone and anyone out there has any info pertaining to a Thomas McCaffrey B. Abt 1824 in Ireland D. 30 Mar 1890 in Taunton MA. and Married to Ellen Eleanor McGowan B. 1827 in Ireland D. Aug 1850 and also married to his second wife Margaret Burns. He and she are my direct line. She B. Abt 1832 D. 16 Sep 1886 in Taunton MA. They originaly lived in Blackstone MA. before moving to Taunton. They had several children one being James Henry McCaffrey B. 12 Aug 1854 in Taunton. D.11 Apr 1903. He is my great, great grandfather. He married one Mary Ann Finn B. 2 Jan 1855 D. 28 Sep 1935. I belive Thomas's parents were Lawrence McCaffrey and Ann McGowan. Both belived to have been born in Ireland and lived in Blackstone MA. Lawrence may have come to America via New Brunswick Canada. At some point there may be a referance to Caffrey with the prefix "Mc" droped. I really hope I can find a link back to the old country and to the McCaffrey, McGuire, McGrafth and any other clans. Any info that may be out there would be greatly appriciated.

As far as I know my James married an Elizabeth McNally. At least that's the name on their daughter Anna McCaffrey Ronan's Death Certificate gave(1835-1917, GG Grans).I suspect that the name Catherine will be part of Elizabeth's name. Being that we are working with a 10 year difference between your James and my Anna, maybe my GGG died and James remarried? I found a link to a Hugh McCaffrey at the same address in 1855, not sure if is a different person or another name John may have went by.
I have Edward McCaffery's (McCafferty) death certificate which gave his date of birth along with his parents. Edward lived with my grt grandmother in 1900. He was the brother of my grt grt grandmother Margaret McCaffery Loughery. Margaret was the wife of Bernard Loughery who died in 1909 in Upper Rooskey. Seems Edward and Margaret's parents where John McCaffery and Maggie Kelly. His brother was John McCafferty (McCaffery) on Familysearch with the same parents.
Any of this sound familiar too you?

McCaffrey Shipwreck?

Greetings all.

My Grandfather, Joseph Clifford McCaffrey (1907-1987) told me of 5 McCaffrey brothers who came from Enniskilin Ireland and were shipwrecked in, or near Nova Scotia, Canada. One stayed in Halifax, NS, leading to Grandad's family, the others scattered across Canada & US.

Unfortunately I never got dates or names and have found no additional information since then. I know there are McCaffreys in Quebec, and the States, some of which link back to Quebec, but I have found no positive links to my branch, no references to Nova Scotia, no references to Enniskilin and no references to shipwrecks.

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? I have been unable to get anything further back than Grandad & some of his siblings.

McCAFFREYs in Australia

This is what I know so far...

My Greatgrandmother was Mary Imelda McCaffrey (married Edward Carroll) and her father was John Thomas McCaffrey and they lived in Tamworth NSW and I believe he married Sarah Moore. JT McCaffrey was a well known businessman and Alderman who retired in 1911 and died in 1921. He had another child, Ernest Moore McCaffrey a doctor in Sydney. John Thomas McCaffrey was born in Australia and his parents were Bernard and Margaret McCaffrey. I have found a record of Bernard's burial in Tamworth and I believe he emigrated to Australia around the 1840s. Bernard was born in Co. Tyronne around 1808 to Michael and Margaret McCaffrey. Any out there related or knowing more information??

I am wondering if anyone can help me. My father, Terrence McCaffrey was born in New york in 1953, and he had an older sister sharon (1966?). His father was a New york Police officer and WWI and II veteran named William McCaffrey, who died in 1961 I believe.

I have no idea what happened to my grandfathers family, I know he had brothers and sisters, because after his death, the family cut all ties with my father and aunt because they hated my grandmother, whos name now escapes me, sorry.

I know thats not alot of information, but the only other info i have is that I believe I remember my father saying that my grandfathers dad, who I believe was also named william, died at post as a traffic cop in NYC, in the late 1920's, and I found something saying a william died in 1929 on the job as a traffic cop in nyc, so that maybe the farthest back line I have.

I believe my great great grandfather, Charles McCaffery is the brother of your Patrick McCaffrey. This could make us fourth cousins. My second cousin, Karen, who lives in Montreal has visited St. Sylvestre and the farm which was the McCaffrey farm. I'll forward the genealogy my uncle gave me of the McCaffreys. Charles married Mary Honora Flannigan. Their child Theresa McCaffrey married Lawrence James McGuire. Their daughter "Mollie" Mary Helen Geraldine McGuire married Dr. Matthew F. Carney in 1922. Their son, Matthew F. Carney, Jr. is my father. He married "Mardo" Margaret Minerva Underhill in 1946. I was born in 1948.

HIS SON PATRICK (1824-1874) WAS MY G GRANDFATHER. BRIDGET WAS THE DAU OF CHARLES 1817-1898) & HONORA FLANAGAN. CHARLES AND PATRICK WERE BROTHERS. MY GRANDFATHER, JOHN CHRISTOPHER, IS PATRICK'S YOUNGEST SON. HE WAS APPROX 3 YRS OLD WHEN HIS FATHER, PATRICK WAS KILLED ACCIDENTLY WHEN A HORSE KICKED HIM IN THE STOMACH. THIS INFO WAS PASSED DOWN BY FAMILY MEMBERS. I BELIEVE JOHN MCCAFFREY (1777- 1856) WAS EITHER A BROTHER OF PATRICK HANGS MCCAFFREY OR A COUSIN? AS HE WAS NOT OLD ENOUGH TO BE HIS FATHER ACCORDING TO THE 1851 CANADA CENSUS. HE WAS MARRIED TO A MARGARET QUIGLEY AND CAME FROM COUNTY TYRONE IN IRELAND. I BELIEVE THEY CAME OVER APPROX 1823 AS THEIR SON PATRICK WAS BORN IN QUEBEC IN 1824 AND CHARLES AND MARY WERE BORN IN IRELAND..

Sylvestre we knew no one but found
the John Houley family who descend from Ellen and Dennis.
I sent them your e-mail address so hopefully they will get
in touch with you. We regret that we did not spend more
time with them.
We recently received an email from an Ed Howley whose wife had discovered two death certificates that stated the Houleys came from Queens County now known as County Laois, Ireland. We haven't looked over there yet.
Another thing, find out when the town offices will be closed
for vacation.

Yes we are distant cousins. My father's first cousin, Claire McGuire McBride lived with her family for many years in Island Pond, VT not far from Lyndonville. Claire's grandmother is Theresa McCaffrey. Thank you for the insight into your McCaffrey ancestors. I just found the baptismal record for Patrick McCaffrey, son of Patrick & Anne Scallon McCaffrey. The baptism was on 3 Sept 1824 and the birth was 14 days earlier. The record is in St. Nicholas parish. Do you want help finding it ?

It is certainly possible. I have little up-to-date data about my McCaffrey ancestors. An uncle, his first cousin and my second cousin all visited St. Sylvestre and spoke with people there about the McCaffreys who lived there. If you have some more dates I'd be happy to make more inquiries in hopes of learning more. I can understand French if the records are there. My cousin Karen in Montreal has some records. Do let me know if I may be able to help you. Warmly, M.

Sometime in the last ten years Mary's death certificate has disappeared. My suggestion: Google "Ohio Death Certificates." I got mine from Ohio Historical Society (was really looking for Mary McLafferty, so I'm no connection). If you can get an copy look at the place of burial. Sometimes the cemeteries/churches have more information. Sorry I couldn't be more help - I was just getting started then and didn't really know what I was doing at all.
