I recently ran across a posting dated 19 Oct 2004 of the obit for John Wendell McCardle Sr. of Hazlehurst (MS) and was wondering if anyone was researching that line. According to my father, John Wendell's grandmother and my g.grandfather were siblings - my father knew her as "Aunt Molly", but the only names I have are a Malalia (b.1858), Kizza (b.1864), and Mary F. (b.1866). I know that Kizza she married an Elliot Beasley.

If anyone is researching this particular line of McCardles in the Hazelhurst/Brookhaven area, I'd be extremely interested in hearing from you. Please email me at sancoeurATyahoo.com

I noticed on the post to which you replied, there was a Melborn (Milburn) McCardle listed - this was a spelling error i noticed on the 1860 census from Indiana. Are we on the same page and do yo have any further information for Joshua/Elizabeth's parents? this has been my stopping point for a few years...
thanks a ton.
tom

McCardle / Baker Family Mifflin County, PA

I am looking for a Gary Baker who posted his family tree a few years ago. His email is no longer working. He and I appear to be distant cousins.

I am working on a family history of descendants of Rev. Johann Heinrich Helffrich and I would love to be able to offer him all the information I have on his Helfrich branch. Here's what I have on Gary's ancestry...

C. Archie Baker and Margaret Isabel McCardle.
Margaret was the daughter of John Henry McCardle and Mary Elizabeth Knepp.
Mary was the daughter of William Ephraim Knepp and Elvesta Jane Helfrich.
Elvesta was the daughter of William Charles Helfrich and Mary Ann Oldt.
William was the son of Josiah Helfrich and Elizabeth Seip (or Sipe).
Josiah was the son of Johann Heinrich Helffrich, Esq. and Margaretha Rebecca Haas
Johann Heinrich was the son of Rev. Johann Heinrich Helffrich and Maria Magdalena Sassaman.

Johann Heinrich Helffrich arrived in America in January 1772. His diary from the journey still exists and has been translated into English.

I have much more I am happy to share, including photos of the homestead, graves, documents, etc. I would be most grateful if you could help me with more information on your family as well. Hopefully you will see this posting.
Dear Kay,
A couple of years ago I answered a message from you on this same board. I guess life does come around in full circles.
In the past four years I ahve learned a thing or two about records.
You can write, I prefer email, the county in the state you are looking into and request a lookup for such a certificate. Keep in mind that these people are in no way indebted to us to do this as it's not their job but if you ask real nice many are nice and helpful and will perform the task. I always email, or call first to make sure I have the right place and ask them to see if they have record of the people I'm looking for. Then if they do I order the document by snail mail with a money order with the amount they charge. The cost is usually very minimal. Then all you have to do is wait a couple of weeks or so. The people are very busy and have to do things like this when they can have several minutes to look through the books.
I hope this helps you a little bit and good luck in your findings.
Pam Richmond

Dear Pam and Jim: Mary R. McCarl whose husband's father's family came from Huntingdon Co. PA reports that in the 1850 census there was an Alfred McCardle or McCarl aged 29 in Barree Towp. May have been a brother of their ancestor, Robert McCardle who was a grandson of the original settler, James McCardle of Dublin Twsp who settled on Tuscarora Mountain there in 1772. May have come from Maryland. Died about 1824. I am descended from James Jr. (1785-1848) who eventually went to Pike County, Illinois.

Dear Pam: (Nov.8, 2000) Your note; I agree with Jim that Alfred McCarl was a son of David, b.ca.1795 and that he was the youngest son of James McCardle who settled in Dublin twsp of Huntingdon Co. (then Bedford) about 1772 (see county history) near the Walker family and died there about 1824-25. We tried to find his gravestone there last month but did not. Mary R. McCarl (Mrs. Henry Newton McCarl of Alabama, see her message in Familyhistory.com) has found a record of him in the Bedford Co. militia about 1777 and thinks that he came up from western Maryland with a family named Swope.Among the McCardells of Maryland, (Catholics) there is a family story that there were three McCardell brothers who came over from Ireland: one went to Maryland, one to New Jersey and one to St. Louis!
Sincerely, Ted Wright

Dear Doug Singleton: (Dec.12, 2000) I think that I have traced the ancestry of my mother, Margaret McCarl of Quincy, IL, back to a James McCardle (d.1824), who according to the Huntingdon Co.PA history settled on Tuscarora Mountain (near the PA turnpike tunnel) about 1772. The story about three McCardell brothers coming over from Ireland comes from the McCardell family of Washington Co, Maryland: one to Maryland, one to New Jersey and one to St.Louis. My branch retained a memory that they lived in New Jersey before PA. I haven't come across a Terence McCardle in any of the records either PA or MD; rather Patrick, James, Hugh, William, Samuel, David.
Do you have any dates or approximate dates for Terrence? The Maryland McCardells were Roman Catholic (Lord Baltimore having founded Maryland as a refuge for Catholics), whereas, as far as I know, the Pennsylvania McCardles were Protestant, and in the case of my James were closely associated with a Presbyterian family named Walker. (My great-grandfather was Alexander Walker McCarl.) If James did come up from Maryland, he may have found no Catholic churches in Huntingdon Co and quietly converted to Protestantism. The lines were not so fixed in the 18th century as they became later in Ireland.I have been told by experts from Ulster that McCardle is always a Catholic name there.
I am surprised to learn of a French marriage (LeFevre) in Lancaster Co., which is known principally for the German Mennonites and Amish (socalled "Pennsylvania Dutch") of whom my wife has several ancestral lines: Guth, Gutnacht, Hilterbrand. and some transient Scotch-Irish.Sincerely, Ted Wright

HELP

I am trying to find info on my great, great, grandfather, George Robert McCardle. He was born in Guernsey County, Ohio (Mill Creek?) in January of 1840. He moved to Wisconsin in 1860 and fought in the Civil War with the Wisconsin Infantry, Company H, 38th reg. He enlisted in 1864 and was released in 1865. I know that he had at least one son, George W, who had lots of kids, Chester, Robert, Edna, Etta, Daisey, all from Rock county WI. I think that George R.'s mother was Elizabeth Campbell, but not sure of father's name. Any help would be appriciated, especially since I now live in Hong Kong and find it hard to do research.

Thanks
Robert McCarlde-Williams
robertmccardle@hotmail.com
