John McCarthy b. 1835 adopted by Blood

I know this is a long shot but here we go. My gg grandfather was born John McCarthy and was orphaned and adopted by ? Blood around 7 years old. Census information has him born abt 1835 in Ireland. I first find him in the 1860 census as John Blood living in Jamestown, NY and married to Ellen (Howard?). I don't know whether the adoption was in Ireland or the US. 1870 census is in Ellicot, NY. 1880 census has his wife a widow. Some family history has him dying in 1874.
Thanks for any help.

Shawn

Emily/Emma McCarthy

Hi, I am signed up to take the new DNA test offered by Ancestry. I hope this leads to a relative connected to Emma/Emily McCarthy who may have come from Cork City. She was born approximately between 1850-1855, came to New York City in 1868, and then lived in Brooklyn, NY for the rest of her life.
With the extreme proliferation of McCarthys from Co. Cork, I figure this is better than slamming my head against my genealogical brick wall.
I will post the results from the test when I get them. I am currently on the waiting list to be called for the test.
Good luck on all your searches.

Hi Marsha

Wow, Nice to meet you! I have been trying to figure out about Mary Ryan and William Glover for a while. I think they stayed in Ireland, because their daughter Catherine Glover which is my great grandmother gave over to America with a cousin to New York. I have Catherine baptism from Tralee, she was born 1861 and Jane Ryan was one of the witnesses, which I think was Mary Ryan sister. I just read this on a post about Mary Ryan died in Tralee and William remarried. Not sure if William and Mary had more children other than Catherine.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My Kerry names:
I will include as many surnames as possible in case they might help someone else.
William Glover 1799c-1892 married Gobnait Brosnan 6 Feb 1837 at Killeentierna.
They had 4 children: Catherine, Peter(emigrated to Canada 1880c), George and William(my g grandfather).
William Glover married twice, first wife was Mary Ryan who died 1884 Tralee.
They had 5 children:George married a Margaret Commane, their daughter Agnes married John Breen in 1887.
William's second wife was Mary Kennelly (widow of Bart Flynn from Rae St, Tralee)
Mary Kennelly's parents were Michael Kennelly and Bridget O'Leary.
William and Mary had 3 children: William 1890, Julia 1892 and Bartholomew 1896-1944(my Grandad). Julia became Rawley and stayed in Tralee until her death.

My Grandmother was Bridget Moriarty and on her side the names include Ellen O'Donnell, John O'Donnell(Derrymore), James Moriarty, John Moriarty of Abbeydorney, Mary O'Sullivan of Derrymore.
If anyone want any information on any of the above names just let me know.

Logged

She is in Chicago in the June 1900 Census.
Another sister, Bridget Ryan Quinn, is in Montreal in the 1891 Census of Canada. Her daughter, Maria Quinn Murphy, has descendants in Newfoundland.
Do you know where in Canada your ancestors lived?
Marsha (in Illinois)
Dear Michelle,

there are LOADS of Jeremiah McCarthys in Ireland - mostly in County Cork. Have a look in my public tree 'Josephine Salt' & see if you can find anything familiar. Also look on www.genealogy.ie which is as free site run by the Irish government. But you have to know where your Jeremiah came from so you can search parish records or you will be hard pressed to get the right bit of the family. for instance I know my McCarthy family are McCarthy Reagh (branch) & come from Garralacka in County Cork - a cousin still lives on the original farm there. One of my Jeremiah McCarthy bred the winner of the 2nd Grand National horse race in 1840 & they are generally a well thought of family. But remember we are related to Michael Collins who some people think was a terrorist. Perspective is everything. And in the 1500s an ancestor called Florence McCarthy (anglicisation of Finn) was locked up by Queen Elizabeth I as a political prisoner. Good hunting. Josephine Dunn

I am running into so many dead ends with this particular branch of my family tree that originated in Ireland. I have a Patrick Carty whom more likely was Patrick McCarthy born abt. 1785 in Ireland. He had a son Thomas Carty b about 1813 married to Hannah Philbin they had a daughter Bridget Carty b. 1843 d. 1918. Bridget Carty married James McDermott and they had a son John McDermott. John married Hannah Jane Catherall. John and Hannah are my Great Great Grandparents. They had a daughter Maggie McDermott b 10 Oct 1910 in the Greater Manchester area.

I am trying to look further back to find the parents of Patrick McCarthy (Carty).

Mr. McCarthy: I apologize for not replying further in regards to the McCarthy's in Texas. Robert and I began dating in 1962 and in 1966 we had a beautiful daughter born Dec., 1966. During our courtship when Robert and I had a disagreement his mother would send him to chicago to visit cousins for a couple of weeks. I never knew the family in Chicago. If you are this family I would love to get to know you. I am 65 now, our daughter is 45. Mrs. McCarthy accepted me as her only dau-n-law after his death taken by this evil person I dare speak her name. Of all the yrs. Mrs. Mc. tryed so hard to protect Robert from parenthood at a young teen, only for us both to lose him to the hands of a violent female with 2 handguns, 10 bullets Robert rec'd. 1 in the floor of his home as he was coming in the front door, and the other in the floor. She had to moved or push his body with the front door as she left town that night after killing him. Such horrible words, but I know so much of the murder because of my employment in Houston, and also after I reconnected with his family and our friends I learned so much. When Robert and I dated as young teens, I think he had fallen in love with me before I him, and his mother saw this and sending him to chicago she tought might give him time to rethink, but after his return home, we only grew closer. Robert was with me during my pg., and he got to know his dau. for a short time after she was born, but she doesn't remember him. I never have let his memory die, I WON'T! Just 2 weekends ago I was in CC., cleaning his grave and placing flowers at his grave. I was with his mom and dad, when Mr. Mc. took his last breath to the disease of cancer. They loved our dau. and me. We stayed with them on our visits and slept in robert's room. Mrs. Mc., gave me many things of robert's after his death. Mr. McCarthy if you are the family of his cousin's he visited I would love to hear stories about him and his cousins. You are welcome to write me (theroseofsharon_1946@yahoo.com). Without a doubt I am certain you are relation to Mr. Mc. one of the most precious men anyone could know. Quiet, Loving, a peacemaker, humanatarian. He loved Rhonda so much. Also a very successful business man. If you have any questions I will be happy to help if I can. Prayers and Blessings, Sharon Cole-Nelson McCarthy I use the McCarthy name now most times.

This story sounds familiar but the lineage is mixed up at the top if we have the same families. My O'Neill family descends from that John Joseph through my grandfather "Frank O'Neill" who was born abroad in Ireland when John Joseph returned to see family there. My dad told me Patrick was John Josephs father, but I could have that wrong. Anyway, I can tell where all the family is now from Frank and Jack down but I too am looking to understand a bit of the documented past in Sneem. Bets of luck and let me know if this helps. John Joseph married Nora and had a number of kids both here in the States and back in Ireland. Patrick was a quarry worker or stone mason who list an eye chipping away at rock. - Chris < John James < Francis Michael < John Joseph < Patrick. Forgive the lack of genealogical professionalism, I am new to the challenge.

Try searching www.irishgenealogy.ie which is the free site set up by the Irish government. Make sure you look in the area you think your McCarthys came from as the whole of Cork is full of them. So search by parish if you can - and read carefully as there are lots of spelling variations in transcription as well; as the original parish records of BMD - there are lots of these to view in the original documents. Note as well that the parishes are named in the first instance with the OLD Irish names so look hard. Do you know the mothers maiden names ? This helps. Good luck :-D

I have a Daniel McCart(h)y in the Manitowoc, WI area in the mid-1850's. His MI death certificate indicates he was b. Dec. 1820 and died Oct. 11, 1872. Father's name was Thomas and mother's name was Mary or Margaret. He had 2 children there with 2 different wives who apparently both died in childbirth (John Calvin and Edmund). He went from WI to Lockport, Niagara Co., NY and remarried. He appears with his family in the 1865 Lockport census. He came to Saginaw, MI area in late 1860's. He reportedly immigrated from or through the port of Bantry and was from a family of 11 brothers. 3 brother immigrated: Thomas, Denis, and Daniel.
