Linda McCartney,56,wife of Beatle Sir Paul McCartney,in Santa Barbara, Calif.,

2012,

Linda McCartney

The wife of former Beatle Paul dies at 56,
Linda McCartney, the American photographer who broke a generation of teen-age girls' hearts when she married Beatle Sir Paul McCartney,
Linda McCartney died Friday while on vacation in Santa Barbara, Calif., Her husband and children were with her.
has died Sunday. She was 56.
Two days before her death, Linda and Paul had been horseback riding, one of her main passions,
Sir Paul, 55, will issue a statement later in the week and asked that people wanting to send flowers should give a donation to charities involved in cancer research, animal welfare, "or -- best of all -- the tribute that Linda herself would like best: Go veggie."
The couple announced in December 1995 that Linda McCartney, a keen vegetarian who marketed her own meat-free dishes,
Linda Eastman was already acclaimed for her moody, gritty photographs when she married Paul McCartney in 1969. They had three children, Mary, Stella and James.
The McCartneys largely avoided the celebrity lifestyle and lived quietly in remote homes in southern England and Scotland, saying they wanted a normal upbringing for their children and Heather, Linda McCartney's daughter from her first marriage to geophysicist John Melvyn See.
Many activists hailed her support for their causes.
Born into a wealthy family, Linda Eastman grew up in Scarsdale, N.Y. Her father, Lee Eastman, was a lawyer; her mother died in a plane crash when she was 19.
After majoring in art history at the University of Arizona, she moved to New York City at the age of 21, becoming a receptionist at Town and Country magazine.
A lucky break enabled her to photograph the Rolling Stones, and she was asked to capture other rock groups on camera.
During a trip to London in May 1967 she met Paul at the launch of the Beatles' "Sergeant Pepper" album. They married in London two years later.
When she joined her husband's new band, Wings, in 1972, as a keyboard player, she was ridiculed for her lack of musicality.
A vegetarian long before it became fashionable, Linda McCartney lent her name to a range of frozen dishes and in 1991 published a cookbook.

Last year, she became Lady Linda when her husband was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. Daughter Stella was appointed head designer at the Paris fashion house Chloe last year.
Speaking about his wife's fight against cancer in an earlier interview, Paul McCartney called her "the most positive person on earth."
Asked how they remained so close, he replied, "I guess it's because we just adore each other."
( April,22, 2012,)

I am trying to find my grandfather Joseph A. McCartney. The only info I have is that he was a boxer and died in the ring anytime between 1920-1930 around the Irvington, New Jersey area. He may have come to the states during that time. My grandmother ( Matilda) was single January 1920 & widowed January 1930. They had 1 child (Virginia)born Dec 1920. Any info you may have would be helpful.

Thank you.

It's news to me that my father, your grandfather, had a son in
Ohio. More interesting is that he has a son in Oregon named John as well. How old is your Grandfather?

It suggests he was married three times. Gerry (Gerald) would have been 67 to 69 about now. Nothing surprises me about my Dad. He was a piece of work.

There is now a McCartney result in the yDNA haplogroup R1a.
That makes for several lines of R1b, one R1a and 1 E3b so far.
I have a John H. McCartney in my research. He would have been the brother of my gg-grandfather, Norman Meeker McCartney. My John H. was born in 1839 either near Pittsburgh, PA or New Albany, IN. He was the eldest son of Alexander John and Elizabeth Jane (Meeker) McCartney. John H. died in 1907. If you believe my John H. is a connection, let me know. I have history going back two more generations to Ireland.

John Newton McCartney Va, TN, Illinois married Margaret Boyd

I am searching for information on John Newton McCartney B:1789 in VA D:1847 Henderson County Illinois. Does any one know if he was married twice? I believe he first married Mary Polly Thomas in TN who died in 1814 and then he married Margaret Peggy Boyd in 1815 in TN and they later migrated to Illinois. He and Mary Polly had several children, which inluded William Andrew who died in Gibson County TN.

I am trying to figure out if the John Newton McCartney that married Margaret Boyd is the same John Newton who married Mary Polly Thomas.

Any info would be appreciated.

I have a McCartney

I can date it back to Andrew McCartney born in Ireland about 1750...I need information on his parents if you have it. I would actually take any information you can give me.

I started with myself (Born in 1975) and traced it back to Andrew McCartney.

Interesting update on McCartney DNA

Two new McCartney males have tested recently and it now appears that we have at least three distinctive R1b groups of McCartneys in the U.S. And, there are my family's E3b results, which add a fourth founder line.

The results can be seen here:

http://ulsterheritagedna.ulsterheritage.com/testresults.htm

(If you change the number at the top of the results page from 500 to 2000, you can get all the results on one page and not have to page around as much.)

Kit Number 190869, is R1b1a2 and represents a Texas-Louisiana group of McCartneys. It is fairly prolific. I've located one DNA match for him with a shared ggg grandfather. 67 markers tested.

Kit Number 202776 is R1b1a2a1a1b4. Like mine, his family roots are in Pennsylvania, spreading into the Midwest. 111 markers tested.

The third, distinctive R1B Kit Number is 143207, also R1b1a2. He has only tested 12 markers but his values seem so different that they quite likely make up a third R1b line. His line also has roots in Pennsylvania, spreading into the Midwest.

Kit Number 105903 is the unknown McCartney. He is also R1b1a2. If he tested more markers, he might merge with one of the other R1b McCartneys, above. Or he might prove to be another, distinctive line.

My Kit Number is 199585, E1b1b1a2, 67 markers tested. I have a predictable match with a first cousin. But I believe all other McCartney males since my ggg grandfather's birth in 1781 in Pennsylvania are dead. He may have had siblings but no other matches have been found to date. I also have a 6 off at 67 match with a McCarty family.

Anyway there's a bit of progress in the McCartney DNA field. As the McCartney name seems to have, at least, both Irish and Scottish roots, it's perhaps not surprising that there are a fair number of different founders.

I suspect there will be more distinctive results to come. Most of these results are from people of Protestant heritage. (I don't know about Kit Number 105903)

The Catholic McCartney lines seem to have arrived in the U.S. later, likely via New York.

Anyway, that's the picture so far. If anyone is aware of additional McCartney yDNA results from other sources, please drop me a line. I would also like to hear from any male McCartneys who plan to test. It would be interesting to add some results from Britain, Ireland and Australia to the mix.

John McCartney, Seattle
JohnMcX@Yahoo.com

I posted to McCartney's message board in May 2011. My gg grandfather, Thomas McCartney, was from county Louth per his Civil War papers. He was born in March 1826 or 1828 whichever document you choose. He died and is buried in Iowa. I do not have the name of his parents and/or any siblings. I would be interested in coordinating any efforts to assist with ID of this family.

Re: Samuel McCartney

Here is some information I've collected on Samuel. I didn't do a very good job of documenting where I found my information. The indian story came from a scrap of paper in my uncle's materials.I still don't have any idea who Samuel's parents were. I'm thinking that Samuel's parents immigrated from Ireland--at least his father. I did find some additional information that says that Samuel was taxed on a still (I guess it was quite common at that time).

Samuel McCartney, while working in the field with a friend, was surprised by Indians. The friend was killed and Samuel was taken prisoner - chained to two Indians. At night an Indian left a tomahawk where the prisoner was able to get it and get loose. He ran to the river and escaped in a canoe, after hiding for a time in a cave. (According to a hand scribbled note left in the possession of Clark Jackson).

Samuel McCartney Historical documents and the History of Indiana Co., PA (1880), list a Samuel McCartney as a private in the 8th Co., 6th Battalion, Lancaster Co. Militia (1776; 1780-1781). Samuel was born in PA April 18, 1753, was of Scotch-Irish parentage spending most of his boyhood in the Cumberland Valley (present-day Franklin and Cumberland counties), married Nancy Penelope Young April 27, 1790 and died April 14, 1817. Additional Lancaster Co. records place him in Martick Twp. (1779), and Bart Twp. (1782) before eventually settling in Indiana Co, PA. Samuel and his wife Nancy's nine children were: Martha; Jacob Y.; George; Andrew; Penelope; Elizabeth J.; Samuel; John Y.; and Jane (Apollo People, 1974). Samuel was old enough to have been Ephraim's father, but was not because he was born in Pennsylvania (not Ireland or Scotland) and more importantly, did not marry until eighteen years after the birth of Ephraim. Samuel may have been an uncle to Ephraim though because of his ties to Lancaster Co.

Samuel McCartney is listed in the Bart Township of Lancaster County, PA's tax record of 1779 as being a bachelor, owning no land, livestock, or Negros. He farmed the land of his father. Being single and 27 years of age he enlisted for the Revolutionary War, served from 1780 - 1781 and was honorably mustered-out. He was paid severance of a land right on the PA frontier (Westmoreland Co). Tax records show Samuel owning 100 acres of farm land in Westmoreland Co. August 23, 1786. Samuel guided his two brothers (James and John) to join him in securing cheap land. Both John and James farmed 400 acre farms in Westmoreland Co according to tax records from 1794.

Samuel then moved to Armstrong County and established a grist mill on Roaring Creek, off the Kiskiminetas River and near the Jackson Farm. He married Nancy Penelope Young in 1790. She was 17 years of age at the time and Samuel was almost 40. Dr. Henry in his History of Apollo book wrote about Samuel. "It is related the millwright who erected the mill was so engrossed in his labor he forgot his wedding day and was only aroused to the duties of life by the anxious guests who sought him and reminded him of his wedding bride."

The McCartney mill was adjacent to the Jackson farm. When Samuel and Nancy perished from the "black death" in 1817 their children were fostered by the neighboring Jackson family. Samuel and Nancy were probably among the original members of the Polk Run Presbyterian Church, a one room frame meeting house built south of Apollo, PA in 1816.

Prior to Samuel's death in 1817 he had another close call with death. He'd gone into a deep comma, everyone had assumed he was dead. He'd been laid out on the table in the drawing room where the neighbors stopped by to pay their last respects. Apparently he'd laid there for three days paralyzed, not being able to move, hearing everything. Just before his burial he wiggled a little finger and someone noticed. Close call!

EARLY SETTLERS
The first white man to hold his claim in what is now Indiana county was George Findley, a native of Maryland, who came into the territory while it
was still Indian land. In 1765, he "tomahawked" his tract in East Wheatfield, near the town of Cramer. Because of Indian attacks and service
in the Revolutionary war, it was many years before he could make a permanent settlement, but the title of the land has never left the family, and is owned by a descendant, Lester Matthews, at the present time.

The majority of our pioneers came from "east of the mountains," in great part from Cumberland and Franklin counties. They were mostly of Scotch-Irish descent, and in faith Presbyterians, and as they pushed the frontier westward with the ever-ready rifle close at hand their saddle-bags were sure to contain their Bibles and catechisms. They were a brave, determined, self-denying race, by no means deficient in education and the love of learning. One has only to examine the early records of this county to be assured of the careful spelling, penmanship and accuracy of style and manner.

As those pioneers blazed their traits into Indiana county it was still overrun with Indians and wild beasts. They slept with the loaded rifle at
their bedsides and carried it with them into the clearing. Long trips were made to the nearest mill, by paths that could be found by the marks on trees. Furs and skins of wild animals were packed over the mountains to be exchanged for salt, iron and other commodities required in their simple mode of life. These families were in constant danger of being captured or killed by redskins, and often were compelled to flee to the nearest fort, leaving their property behind them.

The incidents in the lives of many of these pioneers, illustrating their courage, tact and hair breadth escapes, and indeed their capture by Indians,
would fill an interesting volume. We can only mention a few of their names.

Among the earliest settlers along the Conemaugh river, Blacklick creek and its tributaries, and in the southern part of the county, were Charles
Campbell, John and Levi Gibson, Randall Laughlin and Samuel Dixon (all captured by Indians on the Laughlin tract and Levi Gibson died before being exchanged by the British), John McCrea, who died from exhaustion after fleeing from the Indians to the nearest fort; John Harrold, Philip Altman, Patrick McGee, Archibald Coleman, Christopher Repine, Malachia Sutton, William Loughrey, Jonathan Doty, Jacob Bricker, James Ewing, James Ferguson, Peter Fair, James McComb, Samuel McCartney, John Neal, Alexander Rhea, William Robertson, John Shields, Robert Robinson, Robert Ligget, David Reed, William Graham, Ephraim Wallace, George Mabon, the Hices, High St. Clair, James McDonald, William Clark, John Talkington, and John Thompson. (History of Indiana County Compiled by Frances Strong Helman; 1953)

In 1772 Fergus, Samuel and Joseph Morehead and James Kelley commenced improvements near Indiana, and Fergus Moorhead was one of the first, if not the first, settler to the county. Moses Chambers, who had served on an English war vessel, was another early settler near Indiana. In 1773 William Bracken built a grist-mill on Black Lick, and near him settled John Steward, Joseph McCartney, John Evans, Thomas Barr and John Hustin. On Crooked creek located Andrew Sharp, who was killed by the Indians in 1794, Jacob Anthony,James McCreight, John Patison, David Peeler, Israel Thomas and Benjamin Walker.
I have very limited info on Samual McCartney and his wife Nancy Penelope Young. I have the story of his narrow escape from indians. I would love to know if he was born here or??? I'm the related through his son Andrew McCartney who relocated to Kentucky and then Missouri.
Hi, Carol.

That's very interesting. I am trying to find a researcher in Ireland to do more research for us. I'll post any info I find. Maybe your Thomas is a nephew? We had Thomas's in our line as well.

Are your McCartney's Anglican?

I have a great deal of information on my line (Thomas - Alfred - George Alexander - Grover George - John Richard Sr - John Richard Jr) and would be happy to share as well as expand.

Thank you,
Benjamin

Hey Becca, If you're in Augusta, you must know or be related to Gary, Terry, Larry and Debbie? I'm Perry in Chattanooga. Here's my e-mail pwchtndailyplanet@yahoo.com My sister, Dreama (Birmingham), gave this family history thing a go since I have and maybe she's got something new. We all come to the same hard stop due to lack of further info. Be good to hear from you sometime and any news about anything will be news to me. Perry
