Sorry I misspelled McChesney! Mary McChesney (the widow of George) was my great great grandma. George was evidently in the civil war but mustered out after only between three and four months (hurt?). Mary had several kids, as noted by others, including Ida (13 years old in 1880). Ida married Albert Solomon of Buffalo. They lived awhile with Mary in Allegheny City then moved to Buffalo, where Albert joined the police force. They had five kids: George, Urban, Nelson, Howard, and Mildred (my grandma). After 1911 they moved to Duluth, Minn., where Albert was Police Chief of the steel mill/town (Morgan Park).

I am looking for the McChesney Blood Line of my 4g grandfather, Walter McChesney of Ulster province -- most likely Armaugh. Walter was born about 1730 in North Ireland. He came to America, exact date unknown, thought to be 1770. Established the McChesney Virginia/Kentucky line in America. I'm trying to find his roots. He was Presbyterian. I would like to know what port the McChesney's may have departed from in Ireland around 1760-1770? It has been suggested that his father was Samuel McChesney? Unknown if this is true. He married Isabel (signed Esbil) prior to 1754 or so, children were 1) Samuel 2) Jean (Jane) 3) Mary (Polly), and Walter Jr. only birth recorded in Virginia in 1772. Can anyone help me?

Hi! One thing I have learned is that only the recognized clans have tartans. The septs and dependents are smaller groups who fell under the protection of the clans. They then wore the recognized clan's tartans. They don't have one of their own. Thus, any septs or dependents that associated with my husbands clan Munro wore the Munro tartan. At a Celtic festival a gentleman did show me McChesney in Scotland under a recognized clan. I will never understand why I didn't write it down. But the book was a huge published hard cover book.

I have never believed that John was Sarah's son. There was a John who was at Sarah's in AUGUST of 1850 and then with James in OCTOBER of 1850. I still believe that it was her grandson visiting. Ages have proven wrong many times. Right now it is just a theory...until I can prove otherwise. There was no John with Sarah on the ship.
Ship's name was ABAQUN June 1, 1844.
I can e-mail you a copy if you wish.
Bobbie

There is also John age 7 born in Canada, living in Town of Bath, NY. with James McChesney.
Also John McChesney from Towlesville, NY., born in Ireland 1841, is listed in the Civil War records on Ancestry. Com.
Would you mind telling me what ship Sarah came on from Ireland. I can't find it. Thank you.

Jane (Jennie) died in 1849. According to her obit Samuel died about 50 years before that. I have found oodles of info on everyone else in the family but have not been able to locate exactly when he died and where he is buried. They were married in 1869.

Murray was their only child. He was my mothers grandfather. I guess he was a very special person. My mother had quite a lot to say about Jennie and none of it good. Both of Murray's children died young. His daughter was my grandmother but I never knew her as she died when my mother was about 6. My grandfather married again and eventually Jennie went to live with them, which is how my mother knows her so well. Murray threw her out and never spoke to her again. He even refused to go to her funeral.

I have been researching John and still think he is her grandson through James.
I cannot find a John born about 1841 before 1860 or after.

I found John, son of James, born in Canada about 1843 in 1860:
In August of 1850 he is listed with Sarah. In October of 1850 he listed with his parents. I still believe that he was visiting his grandma in August and was home with his parents in October.
In 1850 they rarely listed the relationship if the person carried the same last name. I have run across that same problem with other members of my family.
I found John, son of James, in 1860, 1880, and 1900. I have yet to find him in 1880...still looking.
As far as the John listed with Sarah and being 9 years old...I have found the Census in all years to be inaccurate much of the time...especially with ages.
Another idea is that possibly the Census taker did not understand the family very well because they would have had a thick accent. There could be several reasons why he is listed as 9
I forgot about that census. I do have a copy of it. I always thought John was probably visiting his grandmother because he wasn't listed on the passenger list with Sarah. James had a son born about that time. Unfortunately, the 1850 census does not mention relationships.
I have been able to connect all of the other children with Sarah, but not John.
I haven't been doing research for several months. This would be a good time to start.

I have the passenger list with Sarah and six of her children arriving 1844 in NY.
With her were: Wm; Joseph; Samuel; Hannah; Alex; Sarah.

Sarah is listed in the 1850 census with: Samuel; Hannah; Alex; Sarah.

In 1860 Samuel is living with William & Harriet

In 1870 Samuel is living next door to William & Harriet.

I haven't found anything that shows a John living with them and he is not listed in the passenger list. I wonder if he was living with one of his other brothers when Sarah died.
Myrtle McGurie and Edna McChesney researched the McChesney families in Steuben Co. NY. I have a copy of the family tree they did. They had help from Miss Katherine Schultz. They have Sarah coming to NY by way of Canada. Where did you get your information from? John age 9, is listed in the 1850 Census-Howard, NY. It also list 4 other children with Sarah.

I have the birth date for Sarah as Dec 5,1837
Where did you find John and how did you connect him to Sarah?

You mentioned that Sarah arrived via Canada. Actually she arrived in New York but I know that James settled in Canada for a time...before his mother came over, and then settled in NY. He probably moved to NY to be with his mother and the rest of the family.

There may be some connection although distant to my McChesneys. The first record of my ancestor that can be located is in Rockbridge Virginia in 1772 when he (Walter McChesney Sr.) and son/brother Samuel McChesney purchased land in the Borden tract. But I can find no previous record directly relating to Walter. It was said of him that he was part of the Ulstermen who came from Ireland/Scotland and inhabited Virginia colony. He was married to Isabel McChesney -- no maiden name is known. It was suggested by a geneologist in 1967 (Katherine Shultz) that Isabel may be the daughter of Benjamin Borden, but Borden had no daughter named Isabel, and if Walter was born in Ireland, then he would have had to have married in Ireland and come to America about 1770 with his wife and children. Isabel was NOT a Borden, misguided though this assumption may be. So I'm looking for a Walter McChesney who was born about 1730 most likely (?) in North Ireland, who lived from 1772-1782 in Rockbridge VA. He could have been born in Ireland, New York/New Jersey, or Pennsylvania as far as I can tell. I have found McChesneys in those areas about 1730, but with no evidence of relationship to my Walter. I'm exploring the French Hugonaut theory to see if it will lead me anywhere. I'm glad at least that you have evidence of your McChesneys roots. Thanks for replying and good luck in your quest.

The McChesneys in my family were from Ireland. Sarah Clark McChesney (born 1796) was from
Monaghan Co. Ireland. She married William McChesney who was not with her when she came into the US.
My father aways said the McChesneys name was from Scotland. This family came to the U.S. by way of Canada in 1844
and settled in Steuben Co. NY. Sarah had 10 children.

Is your offer to look for McChesneys in your book still good? My ancestress Sarah McChesney Bowman Gebhart was born 1796 at Lexington KY; she moved to Ohio in 1804, per her obituary. Her father was Thomas McChesney; her mother may have been Sarah but could also have been Malvina Lavinia. Sarah's husband George Bowman was originally from PA so I assume Sarah was too.

thanks, Jim Lieland

am trying to determine if the Chesne, Chesney Chesnay, McChesney, Chestnut name is French Huguenot. To my knowledge there is no McChesney/Chesney/Chesne tartan in Scotland. What little there was in Ireland seems to be from the 1680 -1690 Especially around the time of the battle of the Boyne in Northern Ireland. This leads me to believe the Chesnoi/Chesnay/McChesneys were French Huguenots who went to Ireland briefly, fought there, and than went to the Am. Colonies. Any information from anyone on this??
