McClean/Lyons Bayonne, NJ & Brooklyn, NY

Searching for the descendants of Thomas Lyons and wife, Margaret McClean. Margaret died young in 1893. They had three children - Anna b. 1889 Bayonne, NJ; Charles Joseph (my ancestral connection) b. 1891 Bayonne; and William b. 1893 Bayonne. Thomas remained in NJ after Margaret's death but the children were sent to their grandmother, Annie McClean, in Brooklyn. The McClean family connection owned a funeral business at 77 Hudson Street in Brooklyn. Charles went on to marry my Lydia Campbell and they seem to have remained in Brooklyn through 1920 with two children, Margaret and Walter, then seem to disappear. Lydia eventually dies in 1950 in Brooklyn and is laid out by the McClean funeral home. William Lyons married someone named "Anna Rose" based on his WWII Draft (1942) but I do not know whether they had children. I am hoping to find any connection to these three Lyons -Anna, Charles and William or to Charles Lyons and wife Lydia. Would love to hear from anyone who thinks they connect. Thanks.

Re: Archibald M’Clean (McClean) Biography

I believe there is a confusion in this text between two Archibald McCleans, uncle and nephew. Arch. the well-known surveyor was born in 1736, the second of nine children of William McClean and Elizabeth Rule. William McClean (b. 1702, Isle of Mull, Scotland) did emigrate to Ireland, where he and Elizabeth married at Londonderry, 2/20/1733. I have found many sources which trace their crossing to Pennsylvania and detailed listing of their offspring, including dates.
My family line of McCleans is descended from another Archibald, who was born in 1699, Isle of Mull. He also emigrated to Ireland, then to Pennsylvania. He married Mary Charlesworth. The fifth born child of their union is Dr. Archibald McClean was born in 1748.
We believe that Arch. (b. 1699) is a brother of William (b. 1702). Our family continues to search for defining evidence to support this belief.

Allan McClean b. Scotland 1817

I'm looking for the birthplace in Scotland for Allan McClean. He was living in Schuylkill county, Pennsylvania in 1850, 1860 and 1870. He was living in Dauphin County, PA in 1880 and died there August 10, 1899, age 82 years, 3 months and 21 days. This would make Allan's birth date approximately June 19, 1817. On the LDS family search web site there is an Allan McClean b. Isle of Mull, Argyle 1817 to John McLain and Sarah McInnis. This is the only Allan McClean I can find from 1817. There is a John McClain on the Schuylkill County Pennsylvania census in 1830, but in 1830, birth locations were not included. Allan's wife was Jane, Jean or Janett, depending on the census year. Their oldest child, John was born about 1843. (Mother Jane would have been only 14 years old, but her age is consistent on census from 1850-1900.) On the 1900 census, Jane is listed as a widow, b. Scotland Oct. 1829, immigrated 1833 (age 4), mother of 14 children, only 1 living. The living child was my great grandmother Isabella McClean Hill. Jane died Nov. 8, 1905, age 76 yrs. 10 days. and is buried next to Allan. In addition to John and Isabella, I have the names of 6 other children who lived long enough to appear on a census: Grace, Mae, Margaret, Genet, Andrew, and Jane. I don't know if my Allan is the one born in Mull or how I would find out. Any suggestions?

My Grandfather was William McClean, who was born and raised in Dungannon before immigrating to NZ. He had a bike shop in Dungannon which i know that until recently was still there. There are now lots of McCleans breeding in NZ :-)

I have some information should you think this is related to your family tree - i would be certainly interested in any info you have on McClean in Dungannon

Cheers
Dee
Hi Ceri-Anne,

Thanks for the message. It's funny - my FATHER, GRANDFATHER, GREAT-GREATFATHER, (not my GREAT-GREAT-GRANDFATHER - he was a William McClean) and my GREAT-GREAT-GREAT-GRANDFATHER are all named Daniel! I am the aberration - as my name is Brendan. ;-)

As far as your grandfather - Daniel McClean - you will need to give me some more details in order for me to determine if there is a match btw our families. (i.e. who his father was / named) All I can say is the likelihood is fairly remote as my McClean family is from County Tyrone - Dungannon area.

Thanks,

Brendan

Hi there!

I heard that there are a lot of McCleans in the Caribbean too - nice to see you are one of them! Well to answer your question - I believe many McCleans migrated from Scotland and Northern Ireland in the late 1600's throughout the 1700's and into the 1800's to both North America and the Caribbean. They, as you probably can figure, were very good farmers and horsemen. I am not sure they were slave owners when they migrated over - but that could be a possibility. If you don't mind me asking, are you black or white (or mix)? Below is a link to Clan Maclean. This is a comprehensive article/history on our Clan (based in Scotland - the Isle of Mull).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clan_Maclean

Regards,

Brendan

She had been ill for a long time and while her death was not unexpected, yet she had been so long known as one of a family which has for years been prominent in the affairs of town and had such a wide circle of relatives and friends who held her in terms of endearment that the announcement of her death wil be received with general regret. Mrs. McClean was born in 1829 and therefore in her eightieth year. She came to Stamford about 60 years ago and had lived here ever since. For many years, her husband, Hugh McClean, conducted a farm at Simsbury and was one of the most prominent farmers and dairymen in this section. Mrs. McClean's son, the Rev. Peter H. He has served as President of the Catholic Temperance Union of this State and is identified with other important church movements. A brother of Mrs. McClean was the late Father Ryle, who was also well-known in the Connecticut priesthood. Aside from Father McClean, there are six surviving children: Miss Nellie McClean; Mrs. John Stark; Mrs. Phineas Vize; Mrs. Martin Ryan; James McClean and Hugh McClean. There are three brothers: John, Patrick and William Ryle; one sister, Mrs. James Walsh; and seven grandchildren.

Hugh McClean died at his home in Simsbury Tuesday night. The cause of death was cancer of the stomach. His wife and eight grown children survive him. One of his sons, Rev. P.H. McClean, is connected with the Hartford Cathedral. Mr. McClean was born in County Down, Ireland, March 17, 1834 and lived in Stamford forty-one years. He was engaged in the dairy business here for thirty-eight years. During all this time, he was honored for his integrity and industry. His thrift had gained for him a competence so that he could have lived comfortably to a ripe old age when death came. He will be sincerely mourned by a large number of relatives, friends and neighbors and the whole community will unite with them in their sympathy with his family. His devotion to his family and friends was well-known so that the sorrow over his death will be sincere. He was a life-long member of the Catholic Church. The funeral service will be held in St. John's Church, Friday, at 10am. Interment in Springdale.

(Source: 8/10/1897 issue of The Stamford Advocate)

The earliest McClain in my line that I have been able to document so far is James McClain who was b. abt 1814 and died in Gaysport, Blair, PA Aug 1849. I know nothing of any siblings or parents. I suspect he could be related to James McLain married to Christian Brown- had at least one son, Lazarus Brown McLain b. abt 1775, who in 1790 was one of original landowners when town of Hollidaysburg was laid out-Lazarus died 1819 in Williamsburg, then Huntington now Blair, PA. Lazarus also had a son named James who died in 1852 in Blair Co, PA.

Yes 2 brothers went West. I remember my mother talking about how they left with only a dollar apiece. William, born 1831 was reported to have went to the Black Hills and was never heard from again. One was headed for Montanna. Robert was to have gone to MO. but there is no record of himt here.
Theodotia Johnson married John McClean, Her sister Mary Johnson married William Larrabee. They had a child Charles who became very wealthy from the Anacoda mines in Montonna. He then moved to Wash. and dealt in real estate. My brother once looked up a Larrabee but he was not much interested in talking to my brother. After John died Theodosia and John Jr. moved to Newberry. Oregon to a lg fruit farm that was given to them by Charles L. They were unhappy there and moved back to Antigo WI. I am in the process of trying to put all the WI. McCleans together. Sure would like to put the 7 brothers that came over in the mid 1700s together. Judy

No, could the name have been Littleberry? That name seemed to be quite popular in the 1800s. Did your McCleans come out to Oregon?

I found them in 1920 in Cowlitz Co., OR but after that they disappear. I don't know if they were on the reservation in SD or if they went to Montana. The MT connection info was given to me from another cousin of the same line who had contact with this person.

Anyone remember hearing a story about 7 McLean brothes arriving from Scotland in the mid 1700s? Or any stories about Lord Fitz Hugh McLean. Looking for family connections. Judy
