Margaret McClusky married McManus

Looking for ggg grandparents born in Ireland.
His name was Patrick (James was probably his middle name) McManus b. 1830 The date he came to US is unknown - most likely around 1850. He became a naturalized citizen in 1861. Patrick died in the spring of 1888 in Greeley County, Nebraska.
Patrick McManus married Margaret McCluskey. (Last name spelled McCloskey, McClusky, etc. on various family documents.) Margaret and her sister Anna were close in age, born approx 1840 (likely Derry or Fermanagh since that is where many other Greeley Neb families stem from) - Margaret immigrated to NYC during the Civil War. (approx 1861)Margaret married Patrick McManus (most likely in NYC), also an Irish immigrant. Don't know where in Ireland he was from. Their children: Mary b.1869 in NY(married to Patrick Kierney; buried in NY), Hugh (died in infancy), Rose (died in infancy), Maggie b. 1871 in Virginia(never married, died when she was 30 yrs), Katie aka Kitty b. 1879(died young of appendicitis) Sarah & James (twins, b. 1873 in Pennsylvania both died age 90+ in Neb).
Margaret (McCluskey) and Patrick McManus left NYC and went to Virginia where he was a miner and daughter Maggie was born. Then they moved to Pennsylvania where he was a coal miner and he worked for the railroad. In the spring of 1877 the family moved to Greeley County Nebraska where they filed for a homestead claim on February 19, 1878.
Margaret was over 90 when she died in the 1930s. Newpaper clipping says her four brothers and two of her sisters had previously died in Ireland.
Margaret's sister Anna McCluskey (never married) lived in NYC & worked as a domestic until she was quite old, then Anna moved to Greeley to be with her widowed sister Margaret. When Anna died she too was over 90.
Isabella Rhea McCleskey was an older sister to my 3rd great grandfather. Family stories say that after she married Miles McCluskey she was disowned by her family. The only record that I have been able to find for Miles and Isabella is the 1950 census, 147th District, Greene County, Georgia, Page 86B, Lines 7-13. According to this census record, Miles' occupation was "peddler." In those days, peddlers did not have the best of reputations which could account for why Isabella was "disowned."

Re: McClusky - Polish/Russian origin

I don't know if this is of interest.

In 1891 my G grandparents lived in Coatbridge, Scotland, which at that time was a big coal and steel area. In 1891 there was a census in the UK and my G grandparents had 2 lodgers, both of whom were listed as born in Poland. This was very unusual for Scotland at that time. One lodger was called Joseph Dombroski (the spelling is unclear), the other lodger was Frank McCluskey. Both were aged about 30 and both worked as blast furnacemen in an iron works.

For various reasons, I'm working on the basis that Frank McCluskey was an anglicised version of his Polish name. The name McCluskey was my G Gm's maiden name, so it may have been an obvious choice if he had wanted a local name, or if his Polish name was considered 'too difficult' by the locals or the census taker.

Of course, it is possible that Frank was born in Ireland and the census taker made a mistake with the country of birth - although I think it is unlikely given that Poland would have been such an unusual entry. Another possibility is that Frank McCluskey was his real name and he was born in Poland around 1860, which would no doubt be a fascinating story if it were true, but I think unlikely.

I've searched the 1901 Scottish census for Frank McCluskey and Joseph Dombroski and also the death records until 1960, but there are no entries, so it looks like they moved-on somewhere else - my money would be on US.

Not certain. He could be the son of Patrick McClusky, born Co. Monaghan, and wife Catherine Hand who was from Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan. They are not directly in my line, but believe they are connected to my ancestor:
James McClusky and wife Mary Flynn, who I believe were from Monaghan, Co. Monaghan. The two families stood up for their respective children marriages, baptisms, etc. And intermarried into another Co. Monaghan family >
Thomas Gibbons and Jane Schools [Scoles] of Esquesing Twp., Halton County. I know Jane Scoles was born in Co. Monaghan, and believe Gibbons may have been from that area.

We had always heard that Timothy Mcclusky had been born in Sligo, but in the past year or two, as I have done some research, I am beginning to doubt that. It doesn't appear to be a name usually found in that region and it has him being born in the same parish as his wife, whom he didn't meet until he was in the US, so I think maybe the child who filled out his death cert just said it, as that was where his mother was from. do you know who Patrick's parents' were?

Katleen

Re: parents of William Gilfillian McCluskey

As your William Gilfillian was born in 1872 in Glasgow, I am sure you would find it very worthwhile to go to the www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk web site. If your William was married in Scotland, start with his marriage registry. If he arrived in the USA before he married, go for his birth.

Since it was in Scotland, should get his mother's full name/maiden name, plus it should give you his parent's marriage date. This will allow you to then go for their marriage, which will give you full names of each of their parents, including their mother's maiden surnames. You can also check the census and death registries for his grandparents and parents.

Cumpulsory registration in Scotland began in 1855, so anything which happened prior to that, will only give you the parish, date and names of either bride & groom or only father for a birth. It is still worthwhile to look for those too. All pages are printable as well.

It is relatively inexpensive to use. In approx. 4 hours, I had been able to print off 17 copies of the census and BMD registry pages, with 150 credits for £30 ... roughly $40.00 US. Much cheaper than a trip to Scotland with so much information to be had, at your fingertips. My *trip* took me from Glasgow to Edinburgh to the Shetland Isles and back at least 4 generations.

I am not involved with *scotlandspeople* at all. Just a very satisfied customer! Give it a try ... good luck.

Cheers ... Toni.

Hello: I have a little info on a McClusky family from Ireland. A census for 1851 in Puslinch Twp. Wellington Co, Ontario Canada shows the following: John McClusky age:36, b:Ireland, Church of England, Laborer/ Agnus McClusky age:26, b:Ireland, Church of England, wife/ Catherine McClusky age:16 b:Ireland/Sarah McCluskey ( I believe this is my gggrandmother who married a William Hamilton in Ontario. )age:13, b:Ireland/Rachal McClusky age:2 b:Canada and James McClusky age:3 b:Scotland. This was found at a website: http://www.census-sense.com/ogw/transcript.asp?id.
Hi. Not sure of any matches. I'm actually looking for relatives of James McCloskey born about 1812 in Ireland. Married Ellen Pender in Pittsburgh, Pa. in 1847. He died about 1877/78 in Pittsburgh. Haven't found when he came to USA or any McCloskey relatives. A James and Henry McClusky both were naturalized in Oct. 1840 in Pittsburgh. Hoping to get copies of record to see if they could be mine. There was a John McCloskey on city directories about the same time frame as my James. Was hoping he might be a relative, but so far nothing to tie him in. Do you have further information? If you should, contact me direct.
shortybaker@excite.com
Thanks, Shorty

Mary Hogan McClusky

Does anyone have any information on a Mary Hogan McClusky and her husband Michael McClusky or their daughter Mary McClusky/McCluskie? Mary Hogan McClusky was born in 1827 in Kings County Ire.(now County Offaly). Her brother Patrick is my gg grandfather. While Patrick came here directly from Ireland abt1848/1849, his parents, and at least five of his sibling went to Dundee, Scotland. Mary Hogan married Michael McClusky(a weaver) in Dundee in 1852. In 1856, her parents and four of her siblings immigrated to New York State. I have never found a record of Michael and Mary McClusky moving to the USA. However, in the 1865 New York State census, their daughter Mary McCluskie was listed as living with Patrick and his family in northern New York. That is the only record I have found
of the daughter in this country. I have some information on the other Hogan sibling but very little on the Mary the oldest daughter. I would appreciate hearing from anyone if they know anything about Mary, Michael and their daughter and any other children they may have had.

Juanita,

Thanks for your reply. Miles (his middle name) was my ggg grandfather. I've seen his first name listed as "James" and as "David" so I don't know which is correct. He was born around 1810. I heard he was a schoolteacher in GA. My Miles married Isabella McCleskey (1813-1862) (yes - she became Isabella McCleskey McCluskey!). They had (at least) 8 children: Thomas, Amanda, Edward, Louisa, Oscar, Albert, and William. I don't know of "my" Miles being in Indiana. I do know a lot of the McCluskeys came from PA originally. My ancestor Miles lived in GA and AL, as far as I know. However, he could have travelled, too. I don't have much on Miles, but I do have a lot of info on Isabella. I would love to exchange infor. Does this sound like your Miles? Please post reply or e-mail me directly (lowekd@aol.com).
Diane

John,
I'm having the same problem finding info on Miles and his ancestors. I do know that Miles married Isabella Rhea McCleskey in Hall Co., GA in June, 1829. I've also heard that Miles was his middle name, which makes him more difficult to locate. I think his first name was David or, possibly, James. There was a Miles McClusky that was a schoolteacher in Hall Co., GA in 1935.
Miles' son, Edward Bengham McCluskey, was my gg grandfather. His daughter was Alice Clara McCluskey, my g grandmother. She married James Thomas Jones and had a son, Walter Erwin Jones (my grandfather). He had a son, Walter Erwin Jones, Jr., who was my father.
I've had a really hard time finding info on Miles. I've heard rumors that Miles' ancestors were one of the founding families of Tallassee, AL. Edward Bengham, his wife, some of their children, and some other relatives are buried in Rose Hill cemetery in Tallassee, AL.
I believe he was born in either NC or SC (per son's 1880 census) His wife, Isabella, was living in Tallassee, AL in 1862 when she died. I've been told that she is buried in Tallassee, but I've not found her grave (could be unmarked). I've been to Tallassee and looked for her grave; I've also bought books documenting the cemeteries in Elmore Co. and have not found her grave.
If you find anything about Miles, please let me know.
Diane

The Patrick McCluskey who married Sarah Garrety was also my ancestor. I have the birth certificate for Annie, who seems to be the only one registered. She was born 1 Feb 1851 at 4 Pudding Chare, Newcastle upon Tyne (this street is still in existence). I have also found her baptismal record on 9 Feb.
In the 1851 census they are listed in Pudding Chare as Patrick Luskey (30?), Sarah (34), Peter (14), Rosanna(10). John (2) and Annie (2 months).
In the 1861 census they are living in 6 Back George St., Newcastle-upon Tyne and listed as Patrick McCluskey (42), Sarah (40), John (11), Annie (9), Ellen (7) and Sarah (5).
Sarah Garretty died in 1870 aged 52 (death cert says wife of Fitzgerald McCluskey (?) but address is as above.
My ancestor is Ellen McCluskey who remained in England and married Patrick Rooney (also from Monaghan) in 1872. They had 9 children of whom 5 survived and lived in Consett, Co. Durham, 12 miles from Newcastle. Rosanna had married earlier (Owen Thornton) and had a large family in Newcastle.
After 1870 I have been unable to trace the rest of the family so perhaps they all emigrated to USA. Does anyone have any further information on any of these?
