ure more than welcome :-) no idea on whether hes involved with blind people or not. He or the School didn't get involved with blind people for another 10-15 years (I think he lost interest by then as theres no further mention of him at the time the School moved to Lisburn Road in Belfast)

Good luck with ur research!

Thank you so much for this info. It's very interesting, especialoly to kow he was connected with setting up the deaf school. I had an idea he had something to do with the blind too. I am hoping to find out more about his econd wife Eliza Berkly and their family, as I am descended from Eliza and her first husband Captain Robert W Campbell.

I'm grateful for the websites you included! I can see just what sort of guy he was!!!

Take care.
Evelyn

Hi I have just found your enquiry about John McVicar McComb.
My great grandfather was married twice My Great grandmother being his second wife. John McVicar McComb born in Glasgow on 21 April 1821 was married to one of his daughters by his first wife. Her name was Henrietta Allan.
John and Henrietta had a daughter born in Edinburgh on 7th May 1897 and named her Mary McVicar McComb. Henrietta died in 1899 in Airdrie.
I know that Mary went to Canada and then to America and married Steven Oster. I hope we are talking about the same person I would love to know Mary had a family.

Susanne

Thank you for the reply. My John was married to Ann Black. They had 5 children; Jane, Elizabeth, James, Philip and Thomas. Ann died in 1853 and John remarried but I can't read her name on the copy of the marriage registar from New Brunswick. John was a shipcarpenter and it states his religion as Baptist. He died June 10, 1890 of cancer. He was 84 years old. I received a reply from another person who had a John McComb from Ireland son of Thomas and Letitia (Robinson) McComb b.Dec25,1863 in Canada and died Jan.25,1890 in Canada but his date of birth is too late to match my John. Any help you can give me would be great. Does your McComb line originate in Nottinghamshire or Ireland? Thank you.

Hello I have a 9 year old son that is doing a Family Heritage project for school.
I'm left trying to research the McComb last name with out any knowledge of the heritage what so ever other than being Scottish. So I'm praying someone out there with the correct info can provide me with some information I need.
Some questions I have are...
*From which country did our ancestors come from?
*Why did they immigrate to the United States (reasons for leaving and reasons for settling and when)
*Why did past generations move to Michigan? Where we are from.
*Is there any interesting stories that describe the transition into America?
*Flags, Maps, Food?
*Illustrations that symbolize a family trend in employment, talents, or skills?
*Mas that trace the movement of ancestors from their homeland to the Untied States?

William McComb m. 1830 Eliza (nee Barkly) Campbell, Belfast

Eliza Barkly married Captain Robert Walkinshaw Campbell whose daughter Mary Campbell was born in 1811.(my great grandmother)
Robert died around the 1820s and Eliza subsequently married William McComb, a teacher, who lived at Colin View and was buried at Hillsborough, Belfast, in 1862, I think it was. I am hoping that someone may be able to help me find connections to the McComb family who might also be able to help me find info on the Campbells. Apart from Mary - or Isabella as she was sometimes known - there was another Campbell daughter called Eliza Walkinshaw Campbell, of whom I know nothing. These Campbells are my brick wall and I would dearly like to find out more about them.

My grandfather is Charles McComb! He is still alive and kicking at 91 years old. He lives in Pueblo West, Co. I remember Eva, she was my great Aunt. Sadly she died a few years ago. Only my grandfather and Shirley still remain. I found this thread by accident. My grandpa hasnt heard from Shirley in a few weeks and someone else has her phone number now. So Ive been checking public records trying to get a new number. There is no death certificate...so thats good. My name is Amber. My father is the second oldest son of Charles and Eileen

Jane,

I sent you an email a couple of days ago along with an invitation to look at my tree. Maybe it was sent to your spam folder?

I was trying to warn the other poster, Sarah, that the McCombs line from South Carolina that you are researching is not directly related to our line of McCombs, who lived in Harrison County, Ohio, about 200 years ago and then moved to Marion County, Iowa, shortly after the Civil War. (I recognize Sarah's screen name. She's in my line of McCombs.)

There is a huge mistake in the One World Tree that somehow connects your family in South Carolina and our family in Ohio because the surname is the same. It sends my family veering off from Ohio to South Carolina in the very early 1800s and late 1700s. But there is no evidence that shows that our two lines are directly connected or that any of my McCombs family members ever lived in South Carolina in the 1700s or earlier. If Sarah will look more closely at your earlier posting with the names of the children, their spouses, dates of birth and death, then she would see that none of it matches up with our tree. The only match is the name "McCombs." Moreover, our John and Margaret McCombs died in Harrison County, Ohio. Your John and Margaret McCombs died and are buried in South Carolina. Everyone in my family tries to highjack your John and Margaret and make them our great grandparents and adds your Abbeville, SC, relatives to our tree.

I sometimes get mad and frustrated when people duplicate this error from the One World Tree. Half of my immediate family members who are into genealogy have made this link and have repeated this error in their trees and they're running around thinking that their 7th great grandfather was living in Abbeville, SC, in the 1700s. (I even fell for this for awhile until I did more research.) I've tried to warn people in my family, but they usually get mad and frustrated with me. But it's true. Our immediate line of McCombs cannot be traced back any further than the very early 1800s in Ohio. (I would love to take my tree further and add more geneations but I know that it doesn't pass through South Carolina. My McCombs family was probably in either Washington County, Pennsylvania, or Baltimore, Maryland, in the 1700s.)

In 1850, Gabriel McComb (b. Tenn, about 1827 ) and Joseph McComb(b. Ala, about 1830) were living in Hamilton County, IL with John Smith, his second wife, and an assortment of relations that included John’s children from both marriages and his step-children. A land warrant filed in 1854, grants land in Hamilton County to Susannah McCombs, widow of Charles McCombs, and she in turn assigns it to Gabriel McCombs. A marriage record from Davidson County, TN has record of a marriage between Charles McCombs and Susannah Smith. I suspect a connection between the Smith lines. Does anyone have any information that would verify this information?

Jane, this is a message that I left for Sarah, who corresponded with you in March 2011:

This trail is a dead end. I've been trying to warn everyone in our immediate family (the McCombs who lived in Harrison County, Ohio, and Marion County, Iowa) that we're not directly related to any of the South Carolina McCombs family. It was a huge mistake created by the One World Tree that keeps getting duplicated by other people. I hate to tell you this: But none of the McCombs from South Carolina in your tree are your great grandparents.
My great grandfather George William McComb was born in Brooklyn 1863, and left home as a teenager and ended up in Chicago where he met my greatgrandmother. I know he had siblings and that through his census records his parents were both born in NY as well. That is all I know of him, though the name Doty has also been associated with his generation. Any of this sound familiar? Leisa

Looking for family of John McComb, born in Bainbridge, Ireland in 1819

I'm looking for information on the family of my ancestor John McComb. The information I have comes from a type-written account "History of John McComb and Family" written in 1940 by his son Nathaniel. Here is the information I have:

John McComb, born June 1, 1819 in Bainbridge, County Down, Province of Ulster, Ireland to James and Susanna (nee Morton) McComb. He was the oldest of 4 children, 3 boys and 1 girl (Sarah Jane). His father James died when he was 12 (about 1831).

At age 21 (about 1840), John sailed from Liverpool, England to Philadelphia, PA. The account mentions that he visited his uncle John McComb in Liverpool before he left for America.

The account also mentions John would have attended the Sea Patric Church near Bainbridge under the leadership of a Rev. Daniel Dickinson.

I'm guessing James was born around 1800, and he presumably has a brother John McComb.

Any help would be appreciated!

McComb George R. 1926-2009 Pa., Ohio

AUSTINTOWN, OHIO – George R. McComb, 83, died at his home in the early morning hours of Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009. He had been ill in recent weeks.

He was born on Feb. 3, 1926, in New Castle, Pa., a son of Jack C. and Marguerite A. Monteith McComb.

Raised in New Castle, George spent time helping his grandparents maintain the grounds of Graceland Cemetery, which they managed.

Later, he moved to the Youngstown area, working first at the McGill Dairy in Poland with his uncle, Ronald McGill and cousin, John McGill. He was a top salesman at Coca-Cola in Youngstown,Ohio; then worked for Grennen Cookbook and Bakery, before pursuing his true passion - automobiles. He opened Custom Motors in 1950. With his brother, Dave, he co-owned and operated McComb Motor Sales, the McComb Auto Ranch and the Akron Auto Auction.

George knew more about cars than just selling them. As a youth, he dismantled and rebuilt cars to learn everything about them. He never tired of talking about cars and loved to share his knowledge of them with others.

His greatest joy in life was his daughter, Cheryl. He would take Cheryl and her childhood best friend, Rosie, for rides in the latest custom convertible he was driving, or take them to work with him on Saturdays whenever he could. He wasn’t a traditional father, and he knew it, but he could not have been a more devoted or loving one. His was not a life without challenges, but he persevered, and in the end he overcame most of them.

Besides his parents, George was preceded in death by his brother, David Lee McComb.

He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl McComb Richards and son-in-law, Dennis; his former wife and best friend, Audrey McComb; his sister-in-law and friend, Jean McComb, all of Poland, Ohio; his cousin and good friend, John McGill and wife Jackie, of Long Beach, Calif.; and other McComb, McGill and Monteith cousins. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

The family would like to thank Dr. Roy Morcos and his staff, Cathy and Linda, for the kindness and care extended to him over the many years of their long association. Also, a special thanks to George’s longtime neighbors, Mr. Norman and Mr. Frease, for always looking out for him.

A private memorial service is planned. Interment will be at Lake Park Cemetery.

Memorial tributes may be made in George’s name to the American Lung Association, 6100 Rockside Woods Blvd., No. 260, Independence, OH 44131 or to the Bummer Fund, 269 Redondo Road, Youngstown, OH 44504. The Bummer Fund aids animals in need of medical care.

Arrangements are being handled by the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland, Ohio.

Please visit www.beckerobits.com to send condolences.
