McConnaughey/McConnachie variously spelled descendants

I'm not certain how many folks look at these boards any longer but I will continue to lobby for McC MEN to join the hunt through DNA. Presently I'm seeking men descending from James & Ellen Berry McConnaughay lineage. I'm looking for a male who descends from James & Isabella McConnel Moore (known as the Ligonier line or descendants of David & Jane Platt McC.
I'm looking for a descendant of John McConnaughey b. 1754 (also Ligonier line of David & Jane Platt McC) I would welcome McC men of any McC lineage, particularly from Scotland or England.
Presently there are 19 McC men among 16 different spellings tested with Clan Donnachaidh DNA project. We have learned some very interesting things about this surname, and most of them are related back into ancient times. We are in the infant stages of this research which has been underway among the genealogical community for about 10 years.

Please join us. If you are a Male McC or know one, please consider testing and encouraging your McC friends. You may contact me at frmid2va@yahoo.com.
Susan McConnaughey Hedeen

Clan Donnachaidh presently is hosting a YDNA project. With- in the project are results in the McConnachie section for several Y genetic tests mostly of those descendants who migrated out of Scotland for other environs.

If you are an in resident male McConnachie viewing this post, then you are interested in genealogy and tracing your ancestral roots. The Ydna project is as well and we would like to encourage you to check into some genealogiccal genetic testing. If interested, please contact me frmid2va@yahoo.com. Susan McConnaughey Hedeen

Hi There,

To all the Mc Connachie's I need your help!
I'm hoping someone might have seen any documentations
regards to this family Maconochie. History has that this
family changed the surname from mckonnochie or maconochie
after a service to the King of Scotland, The Robert Bruce II
around the period 1360-1390. To macomber this family is
supposedly of the clan Campbell, from branchs of maconochie
or mckonnochie & comber. Any look ups would be appreciated
very much.

Thank you,

Christopher

Not sure if this helps, but, from research done by another member, it appears that some Macconnachie's moved from Bute, Scotland to County Antrim & County Down in Ireland around 1610-1615 and ended up changing the spelling to McConkey sometime afterward. So far, my direct lineage has only been traced back to John McConkey, b.1741 in County Monaghan, Ireland.

My sister has a photo of your grandparents and all their children taken possibly just before your father left for Canada. I will send it to you when I receive it from her but you may already have it.
Jamesina was the second child and eldest daughter of Margaret's daughter Maggie.
My e:mail is carolgmclean@aol.com
My research is based on the farm Rannachy as it is easy as the family were there for so long - even my father lived there as a child in the 1920's. Is there any other general information you would like?
When I send the photo's I will let you know the detail I have on everyone which may help in the naming.
Do you have any blanks on Margaret's children?

bye Carol

Carol,
Amazing what a small world this is! Your Dad wrote to my Dad "out of the blue" after getting his address from my first cousin Tim in England. (Tim is now Lord Garden, and does lots of media work in Britain, which may be how your Dad found him. He is the Defense spokesman for the Liberal-Democrats in the House of Lords.) I'm sorry to say that my Dad passed away almost exactly 5 years ago at the age of 92.

RE parents of Margaret McConnachie, according to a copy of her wedding certicate, they were John McConnachie, blacksmith, of Drybridge, Parish of Rathven and Margaret Russel.

RE grandchildren of Margaret McConnachie and George Garden as of 1903, I have names of 11 who were likely to have been born by then, the eldest being 11 years old and the youngest being a year old.I'd love a copy of the photo. Can you send a scanned version via e-mail? If not, I can send you an e-mail and give you my snail mail address. I can also send you the "Genealogy Report" of my database, and we can exchange info to fill in some of the blanks we each have.

Cheers,
Linda

We have a photo of Margaret Garden's (nee mcConnachie) grandchildren, taken around 1900-03 possibly on the 70th birthday of her husband ( she having died ). I am trying to name them by deduction, although not all would have been born by then. Do you know who Margaret McConnachie's parents were?
You may have the photo if not I'd gladly send it
Thanks Carol

My father, William Garden (b. 1909) emigrated to Canada in 1928. He was the 4th son of Margaret McConnachie Garden's second son George Garden. He came with his first cousin Hugh McCallum, son of Margaret's eldest daughter Isabella. Based on info received from George Gordon Duncan in Rothes, Scotland, Jamesina was the youngest daughter of Margaret's youngest daughter Margaret Garden Nichol. In written correspondence from him, he told me that his sister Margaret Duncan Innes (aka "Peggy") is the historian in the family. If my calculations are accurate they would be your aunt and uncle. Perhaps you could get more info from them. The Scottish naming traditions make it very difficult to figure out who's who, don't they?

My Dad and Mum had only two children and my brother Alistair has 3 children. He lives in Alberta. I have none. I believe that Hugh McCallum had two sons, but we haven't had any contact with that branch of the famly for many years. Based on my recollection, they were last known to us to be living in the London, Ontario area. My Dad told me that his uncle Alexander Garden (aka "San"), youngest son of Margaret McConnachie Garden, had come to Canada with his two sons, but they may have returned to the UK. I have no further info on them.

Cheers, Linda

Got to put you right on this one McConnachie is an older name than Robertson, the first clan chief Duncan gave his name to the clan, McConnachie means son of Duncan, his grandson Robert gave his name to the Robertsons, son of Robert. As for the variations in the way McConnachie was spelt not many people could write their name and as they spread throughout Scotland to different parts their names were written down as it was pronounced hence Maconnachie,McConachie,McConnachy and a dozen other variants, Hope this helps Hamish

Since my last posting, I have received more info from a distant cousin. "My" Margaret McConnachie was born in 1837 in Drybridge, Letterfourie -- which is just up the hill from the Kirk at Rathven, and part of the Parish. Her father John was a blacksmith, mother named Margaret Russell. She died on 17 July 1874 from "uterine haemorrhage during pregnancy" -- her ninth in eleven years! I have no other info on her siblings. Ben, I don't know where "Coatsbridge" is located -- not found on UK Multimaps Web-site. My ancestors came from the Parish of Rathven, which is adjacent to the town of Buckie on the Moray Firth coast in the north of Scotland (east of Elgin). People didn't move around much in those days, except to emigrate to far-off places, so if your ancestors' place of origin is near mine, there may be a connection. The other thing that's a challenge in doing research is the naming traditions in Scottish families -- the same first names appear generation after generation!

Linda,
I have just started with my own genealogy research. My great grandmother was a McConnachie. Sarah, with brother John, sister Jenny and at least one other sister that I don't know the name of. Sarah married William Blackwood and settled in Turle Creek, PA. I found a ship manifest for Jenny where she was going to visit a friend in McKeesport,PA by the name Mrs. D. Russell. John McConnachie also lived in McKeesport, PA. They were originally from the area around Coatsbridge, Scotland. I don't know if any of this connects but there were some similarities in names. Let me know if there is a connection. Thanks.

I am a descendant of Margaret McConnachie, b. 1837 in Rathven, Scotland. Her parents were John McConnachie and Margaret Russel. She married George Garden, a local farmer, in 1863, and bore 8 children. She died in her 30s --probably from exhaustion! We have a photo of a painted portrait of her -- she was very beautiful. I am descended from her second son, also named George. I'm trying to establish her date of death. I live near Vancouver, BC, Canada. Would like to exchange info with any of her relatives.

Were either of your William McConnachies in Chicago in 1900??? According to the 1900 census, my ggggrandmother was Rebecca Creech(?) Hartney Burns appears as Rebecca McConnachie. Illinois State Marriage Archieves also shows that she married William McConnachie in 1883.

Would love to hear from you.
