Aha! So happy to hear from Conn's descendant.

I have that Conn died 29 Jun 1979 in Marion County, Florida at the very young age of 58. My question: Where is Conn buried?

What a wonderful career he had! Years ago, when I was doing initial research on him, I googled his name and all sorts of wonderful information came up.

Conn was my third cousin.

Warmest Regards,

Donna

My cousin, Alex Hughes, did the 67 DNA test and came up with only 1 Hughes BUT THREE McCreary matches. I have never found any McCreary info in my Hughes research. I am looking for info on George H. Hughes married to Mary Jane Hail in Ky and then went to Missouri.

I am very interested in buying the Hughes Genealogy that you compiled, if it is still available.
I have a book "The Scots-Irish of Colonial Pennsylvania" which explains the history of the Scots-Irish and the reason so many came to the US and why so many cholse Pennsylvania. Has to do with William Penn/Quakerism and their tolerance for different religions. You will find a number of Hugh's in the McCreary line. Hugh is a very Scottish name somewhat up there with Alexander. The Church of Scotland is Presbyterian. I am afraid I cannot help you much with Ireland. You almost need to know what parish the family was from. I cannot get before 1790 or so with mine (with reliable information) although they seemed to have been there before then.

Good luck,

Janis

Hello Janis,

Your tips have been so helpful! I have been able to trace my McCreary (changed from McCrary around 1800)lineage back to when my ancestors arrived in America... but the trail stops there.

I am researching this because I wanted to discover if I have Scottish ancestry. I found something you wrote online posted many years ago about a Scot being born in Ireland doesn't make him Irish.

My ancestors came from Ulster between 1725-1745 and settled in North Carolina. I am not Catholic. According to your information, my ancestor (John McCrary) was most likely Scotch-Irish...

Do you have any pointers as to where to continue investigating if my ancestry is linked to the era of the Great Plantation? I loved all the history you shared from the blog that I read. Where can I find more? books, websites etc?

I cannot find anymore info about John McCrary on this website... all I have is that he was born around 1695 in Ulster Ireland. He came to America with his wife (Anna Merril) and son Hugh sometime in the above mentioned time. I would love to continue my search... I would greatly appreciate any pointers, tips, etc, and thanks again for sharing your research! I've learned a great deal already...

juliana

Have you tried WWI draft registrations? WW2? Census records from 1900 where he would have been a child? The month and year should correspond with the WWI draft record. His death certificate? Many gave parents names including mother's maiden name. His marriage application?--often parents names were on the application.

Just some ideas.

Janis

GEORGE MCCREARY, the immigrant (1752-1842)

George came from Ireland about 1775 and served in the Revolutionary War. He lived in York County, PA, then Washington Co., PA and then moved to Knox Co., OH.

He had many children and the sons Thomas, Benjamin, and James I have documented but his son William is confusing since there are several William McCrearys in Knox County, OH. Who has info on William to share?

George's daughters are confusing also. I found where several of them married in Licking County, OH.

I think 4 of George McCreary's children married in Licking County, Ohio. I've found these with the original spelling listed below.

Nancy McCreary & David Evans Aug 4, 1811
Benjamin McKrevy and Deborah Mathew Dec 31, 1812
Rebecca McCrary & James McFarlin Feb 26, 1822
Elizabeth McCreary & Alexander McFarland Apr 5, 1825

I've been told that James and Alexander were brothers but I don't know for sure.

George also had daughters Mary and Sarah but I haven't found anything on them.

Who can share info on any of the daughters?

Marian McCreary
mmccre8814@aol.com
Hello---

Captain John Hughes' grand-daughter Louisa Hughes married John Allen M. McCreary in 1860 in Washington County, Missouri. They died in Rockwall County, Texas---she in 1906 and he in 1920. They are my great grandparents.

Louisa was the daughter of William Hughes and Elizabeth Keller. Elizabeth died in Washington County, Missouri, in 1870, and then William came to Texas to live with Louisa and John. William Hughes died in 1875 in Rockwall County, Texas.

John Allen M. and Louisa (Hughes) McCreary are buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Rockwall County, just down the road from where I grew up. William Hughes is buried there with them. Elizabeth (Keller) McCreary is buried in Big River Cemetery in Washington County.

William's first wife was Mary Kirkpatrick, who died in 1831. She also is buried in Big River Cemetery.

Warmest Regards,

Donna McCreary Rodriguez
McKinney, Collin County, Texas
Thank you for posting Grata's obituary. I had lost contact with her in the late 1990s and figured she had passed on.

I worked with Grata and Daphne` on the Hughes line. I'm a direct descendant of John C Hughes who wrote the Civil War letters.

I am currently compiling a Hughes Genealogy titled

THE DESCENDANTS
AND ANCESTORS OF
CAPT. JOHN HUGHES

It should be finished in about 3 or 4 months and will be available on on Data-DVD only as I am anticipating it will be over 2000 pages---full of documents and photos.
Re: McCreary Tire and Rubber Co, PA

Hi, Accidently tripped over your query. I worked at McCreary Tire & Rubber from 1973 to 1985. The "president" @ that time was Harry C McCreary Jr. His wife was Joan. His father's name was also Harry. I don't believe they had any children. McCrearys were squeezed out of control by a Don Mateer. The name of the company changed to "Specialty Tires of America" around 1984 ot 5. It is still in existence in Indiana, PA with a sister plant in Tennessee. There was a farm across the road from the plant that belonged to the family. Not sure if it is still there.
Don't know if this helps in anyway.
