I am looking for any information on William J. McCulley. He was my great grandfather. Not sure the date he was born. He married Mary Alice Powers on July 27, 1890. Personal notes show he died in west TN in 1893. I cannot find any record of his death. His family might have originated out of Alabama, but not sure.
Thanks

Darren-
hope you're still around--I know your post was directed at someone else, but when I saw that you had info. on Gordon, I had to reply. I have been looking for my ancestor, Gordon King McCulley, with the understanding that he was born in Scotland, but now realize he may have been from Ireland. I'm wondering if it's the same one you're related to--he sailed around the Horn from New York to California to start a post office in Sacramento during the gold rush. We have copies of letters he wrote home to his wife, Elizabeth Frances Avery. Any info. you would be willing to share would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks--
Nancy

Hi! My name is Kathryn McCulley Besag; my father was Edward Bruce McCulley, his father was Bruce McCully, father Cyrus McCully, and Samuel McCully. The story I heard was that Bruce found out that "cully" means "fool" in some language, and he took offense in having a last name (he thought) that meant "son of a fool." And so he added the "e" to his last name. Could be just a story, but an interesting one. Your search is very exciting since what I've really been looking for (and not finding) is a link to Ireland and Scotland from my branch of the family. I'll check back to see what happens next.
My best,
Kathy (McCulley) Besag

Hi Glen,
It's quite a while since I wrote my last post. Since then, we have learnt quite a bit through DNA testing, but I haven't found out any more about the caillot theory.
A number of McCulleys and those with similar surnames have had DNA testing, and what's interesting is that there are 2 distinct groups. The group I belong to has several closely related men, and we belong to a rare haplogroup, G2a. The other group belong to the very common R1b group, and do not appear to be closely related. I take that as meaning that their names came about through name changes. There is no link at all between the two groups. The G2a group is believed to have originated around the Caucasus area, and it is highly likely that our ancestors lived in France and possibly Spain, after leaving the Caucasus area around 400AD. At least 2 of the tested men have oral family history suggesting a link to France pre migrating to Scotland. However, no mention of de caillot. One believes the origin of the name is from the french town cully. You said the caillots were a nebulous group - can you expand on that?
Cheers,
Andrew

McCulley here!
I'm no genealogist, but had to comment after reading this post/thread...
re: 'de Caillot" theory - I live in France, and historically the 'caillots' are, at best, a nebulous group... persecuted, hounded, and rarely censused. [A recent history bestseller called "Discovering France" tells (some of) their story].
That said, yes Til the double ll does give you a 'Y', but but but... that's with modern phonetics... even today, the 'olds' and their patois use a clearly rolling double ll - such as on an 'r', and back centuries there's every chance - imho - that the 'Caillot' would've used a mcculley-sounding double 'l'.

Like I said, I'm amateur at this genealogy stuff, but I'm also a well-qualified translator: any French texts on the McCulley/Caillot topic would be willingly translated gratis ;-)

Happy hunting.
Glen

I have some information about Alanson M Cox. He married Georgianna Marrion Affleck in Muscogee County Georgia 5th May 1846. Georgianna was born 24 Dec 1819 in Haddington a small town just south of Edinburgh in Scotland. She was the sixth child of John Affleck (Auchenleck) and Agnes Watson. John Affleck was a seedsman & gardener in Haddington. Georgianna accompanied six of her siblings to Georgia about 1836/7. The eldest son Henry ( from whom I am descended) remained in Scotland.According to US 1850 census Alanson was a 'merchant' tho' other records record him as a doctor. There were nine children born to them.. the first two in Georgia, one in Indiana and the last six in St Louis Missouri. I have not found Alanson post 1870 but Georgianna went to New York City with her son John Watson Cox ( b 1856) and daughters Laura ( b 1861) and Anna (b 1868)Georgianna died just after the 1900 census. I'll look up the exact date for you.
Perhaps we can exchange some information?
Muriel Atkinson

IRT your latest. IF you are a son of Billie Jean and grandson of Bessie McCulley b. 23 Nov. 1905 you are blood kin to me. You ask if I have information on William McCulley, he being a brother to George F. McCulley. I am pasting part of his bio as he is a grandson of Ailsey Wilhelm and Wm. McCullock who married 26 Dec. 1810. Ailsey Wilhelm's bio is my Wilhelm File AE in my Wilhelm connection and Ailsey is a younger sister of Richard Wilhelm and an aunt to one of my Great Grandmothers, Elizabeth Wilhelm who married Henry Jacobs.
H.)James William McCulley b. 16 Oct. 1853 at Woodville, Jackson County, Alabama to Nancy Lewis & Richard McCulley. AKA Rock McCulley. Was a Druggist at Paint Rock, Alabama. d. 6 May 1901 and is buried in the Old Paint Rock Cemetery.
W.) Mary Emily Frazier born in Dec. 1855 Paint Rock, Alabama to Temperance Frazier & Alexander Smith Frazier who were first cousins. m. 14 Dec. 1882 in Jackson County, Alabama by Dr. John F. Clark, a Justice of the Peace and Mary's uncle. d. 5 Jan. 1902 & is buried beside her husband.
One of Mary Emily Frazier's children was named Temperence who married a Hosmer. She is the lady I met in Hartselle AL in early 1972. I have a small book she wrote.
Going through this process of exchanging information is very time consuming. I would like to have information about Bessie your GM, providing she is that. If not, please explain who your mother Jean was? I have a lot of information you probably would be interested in but will not attempt sending it through this board medium so we must exchange email addresses some way. I have no compunction of sending you my mailing address in Seaside, CA and my Email address. I am 81 years old so time is of the essence in sharing info as I discern you are interested in learning more about your ancestry and kinfolk still living and if you are as you claim, you have huge numbers of kinfolk all over the country.

Zane E.
How are you connected to the McCulley family? Do you have any information on William McCulley McCullock? I have been trying to find some info on him, but no luck so far. Jean is my mother.

I do not have McCulley Bible Info. Geroge Franklin McCulley born 2 Feb. 1852 AL d. 17 June 1925 TX. Your including Bessie & Jean names only pointer to same family I have in my Ailsey Wilhelm files. All of Temperance Hosmer's writings say "George Francis McCulley". A daughter of Myrtle's, Jean Gore, says her grandfather's name was George Franklin McCulley. This according to Jean Gore's aunt Bessie!! I met Temperance Hosmer in early 1972 in Hartselle AL. She long ago walked the wind.
Maronda Ann Catherine Stewart 1st wife of George Franklin McCully. AKA Mandy. Had two children who died young and were buried in unmarked graves in Jackson County, Alabama. Place of burial probably in the Stewart cemetery in the area of Keel's Mountain. It is possible the two were buried where their grandfather, Richard McCulley, is buried on Keel's Mountain but the family lived nearer the Stewart Cemetery so more likely they were buried there.
Between 1874-1876 Mandy with her Mother-in-Law, Nancy Lewis McCulley, went to Texas to join her husband who had gone to the Ft. Worth area about 1874. Mandy had two children in Texas. In 1941 the Texas family said Mandy was buried in a Ft. Worth cemetery that had since then disappeared beneath oil storage tanks.
Do you have a copy of the McCulley Bible information? Do you have any information regarding the place of burial for George's first wife? What is the source for Jean using her Aunt Bessie as a source for George's middle name? Bessie was Myrtle's sister.
