Lorinda: Thanks you very much for your information on Thomas. Yesterday, I did find Thomas and Dorcas on the 1850 census. They were in Jefferson Co., Iowa - Polk Twp.
Here is the information:
Page 226; Enum. 15 Nov 1850 Roll #M432_185
Dwell 8/Fam.8 Thomas McCulloch 55 Farmer b. Va
Dorcas 56 b. Va.
Charles 26 School Teacher b. Va
Edward McNew 22 Laborer b. Va.
Joneson H. Howell 27 Cab. Maker b. N. Y.
There are several McNews in Dist. 67 of Wash. Co., Va. I am going to check them today to see if Rebecca Jane (wife of James b. 1832) was a McNew and maybe they were living with her parents or perhaps James was working for them. He would have been about 18 or 19 in 1850. Their oldest dau. on 1860 census was b. abt 1857. Our ancestors' lives are very interesting. You wonder what drew them from Va. to Iowa.
Again, thank you,
