Hopefully you can help.Looking for Polly (?)Bell. She m. Samuel Beall/Bell about 1800/1802. She would have been Samuel's 2nd wife. I believe Mary (Polly's) parents might have been Robert McCutchen and Margaret Callison. At that time he was located somewhere close to Cumberland MD. Looking at the map, Bath/Berkely Springs WV (now) would have been close, if that is where the McCutchens were located. I recently found some information on the internet regarding West Virginia Pioneers and her name popped up (Mary McCutchen) as being married to Samuel Bell. Anything you could give me would be appreciated.Took a road trip to WV and MD 2 years ago and still couldn't find her last name!
Sandee Rakestraw

Get hold of a copy of "Rhees of Rochester". This is a biography of Rush Rhees, President of the University of Rochester 1900-1936. Annie was his mother.

My wife is a grand daughter of Rush Rhees. We have a carriage clock which came to us from the Rhees side. It has initials "AMR" and "1895" engraved on the case. It belonged to Annie McCutcheon Rhees and it runs just fine 113 years later.

llc

I have located the graves of my great-great-great-grandparents Robert Reid Smarr (1796-1847) and Martha Caroline McCutchen (1821-1883). I know Robert's family of origin, but I know nothing about Martha's origins.

From census records it appears that after Robert died Martha raised their children alone and never remarried. I have found one reference in Antioch Baptist Church Sunday School records to Martha Smarr, a former teacher there, stopping by for a visit, but other than that I have no information about Martha.

The McCutchen Trace Association has not been able to help.

Can you?

thanks,
David Hill
Atlanta, GA, USA
dbhnb1@hillfamily.org
Augusta County, VA

I have been doing Callison research for quite awhile and comparing the McCutcheon/Callison connection.

We basically have two Callison lines -- both from a James. The older James was married to Isabel (pre 1740) and one of their children was Mary. The younger James came to this country a little later from Ulster, County Armagh, Ireland. He had 3 wives with one of them being the earlier mentioned Mary Callison. Margaret Callison McCutcheon w/o Robert, is thought to be a sibling of the elder James. She had 3 descendants who married into the Callison family. Isaac Callison, was the son of the younger James and his first wife and Jesse Callison was a child of the younger James and his second wife, Mary Callison.

DNA testing has proven that both James had a common ancestor.

Now for my current Callison problem.

I have the following Daniel Callison (possibly Kellison at a later date)
Callison, Daniel.
Publication 1 January 1790.
Other Format Available on microfilm. Virginia State Land Office. Grants
A-Z, 1-124, reels 42-190; Virginia State Land Office. Grants 125- , reels
369-.
Note Location: Augusta County.
Description: 148 acres on the waters of the Calf Pasture and Little River
and joins John McCutchen on the north west side

Who is this John and do you know anything about this land. The elder James Callison also had land on the Calf Pasture and Little River waters. It looks as though the two rivers converge so the area would not be massive. Just wondering where it might be on the Beverly Patent map.

I have another Callison -- William J. Callison -- who was born in Bath Co area (where Daniel Callison went) and "returned to the old homestead" in Augusta Co where he resided until his death. His son also married a McCutcheon.
James H. Callison (William J.) was born 11 Nov 1822 in Near Middlebrook, Augusta, VA, and died 09 Mar 1889 in Augusta Co., VA. He married Isabelle Patrick McCutcheon 15 Dec 1853, daughter of James McCutchan and Malinda Hall. She was born 05 Oct 1824 in Middle River, VA, and died 01 Mar 1900 in Augusta Co., VA.

So in trying to connect Daniel, William J and James Callisons -- just wondering if there was any connection between Robert, John and James McCutcheons as mentioned above. Needles in haystacks.

Take care. Mariyn Hansen

I can't answer your question but do know several McCutcheons from the Augusta County, Va. bunch settled around Davidson County, TN. Namely several children of James M. McCutcheon Sr. and Griselda Campbell (John, William, Patrick, James Jr., and a Samuel). Your James is from this line but I'd bet whatever line he is from came out of Augusta/Rockbridge County,Va.

You might want to put a query in The McCutchen Trace

http://www.mccutchentrace.com

My gg grandfather Joe Cunningham was a mulatto as well born and raised in South Carolina. He married Lucille McCutchen and had twelve children. I do think there is a connection; either Joe and Agnes are siblings or cousins. I have tried to look for gg Joe on the earlier census, but it was difficult because the name was well-known, and there were too many of them born in 1886 and 1885. My gg grandfather is Durant Gamble. Durant and Nellie might be relatives. Were your great grandparents from South Carolina as well? Which Coopers in NJ (Jersey City & Irvington), PA (Philly), and SC (Kingstree, Nesmith, Newberry & Hemmingway) do you know? I ask because I know most of them, and I grew up with some. Please email me back on here or at tiffanyboards@yahoo.com.
Hello n9chalant,

My great-grandmother Louvenia Cooper (nee Cunningham) is part Native American as well. My family are still living in Kinstree, SC as well - Gamble, Cooper, and Cunningham. I know a lot of relatives who are living in PA, NJ and SC! My immediate family and I are living in New Jersey. I mostly know the Coopers because my grandmother's maiden name is Cooper. I only know one Gamble; he is related to me from the Boards' side. I never met a Cunningham. This is too much of the coincedence, you can be my cousin! Your great-grandfather and my great-grandmother could be cousin. Email me back when you get this message.

McCutchen, Black, McClung connection Augusta Co., VA, Jackson Co., GA

Hello, Does anyone have information on John Black who married Rebecca McCutchen 19 Mar 1788 in Augusta Co., VA. Some sources on ancestry.com reflect that they had a daughter Margaret. Some sources also reflect that Rebecca McCutchen "may" have been a sister to Joseph and William McCutchen and Sarah McCutchen who married John McClung.

The brothers William and Joseph McCutchen removed to Jackson Co., GA. On 1 Jan 1816, recorded in Jackson Co., GA deed records, Peggy (Margaret ?)Black, of Knox Co., TN, gives power of attorney to William McClung of Bath Co., VA ...to sell, convey all that land that she now owns in the State of GA... Proved 1Jan 1816 in Knox Co., TX before Chars McClung, Clerk.

Could this "Peggy Black" be the daughter Margaret referenced on ancestry.com (not proven)? Too many coincedences: the McCutchen brothers in Jackson Co, GA, same county the court record is filed, and, an attorney McClung used in Bath Co.

Any help would be greatly appreciated !!!
Click on projects at the top of the screen and go to "D" for "Donald USA. Mark MacDonald is the administrator for the group that includes the McCutcheon/en/an family. I have recieved the first of 2 DNA testings that I ordered on McCutcheon/en families.
