Looking for Rhoda McDade (b. 1821 NC, d. aft 1870 KY)

McDade Ancestors,

Can you help me find the parrents of Rhoda McDade (b. 1821 NC, d. aft 1870 KY)?

She is listed as Rhoda Broils in the 1850 Census of Dickson County (TN) with a 11-year-old son Hiram, so she married about 1838. She was listed as Rhoda Mathis in the 1870-1880 Censuses of Trigg County (KY). She was listed as Rhoda McDade on the death certificate of her daughter Godfrey Mariah "Mariar" (Mathis) Newton.

There was a Rhoda "Rhody" McDade (b. 1784) who was the daughter of Willis McDade (b. 1739 VA, d. 1823 NC). I wondered if her brother John McDade (b. 1759 NC) named a daughter after his sister. His family moved to Fayette County (TN) by 1840. I can't find the 1830 Census for John McDade or his will, where a daughter might be listed.

Thannks.

Jim
John Joseph McDade from Letterkenny, Ireland and Margaret White

John and Margaret McDade were my great-grandparents. To my knowledge, John was born in Letterkenny on 15 Aug 1891 to either Patrick or James McDade and Catherine Deeny or Denny. His siblings were Patrick, Daniel, Hugh, and James. Other siblings may exist but they are not known to me.

At some point, John moved to the Glasgow area and later married Margaret White, born about 1893 in Scotland. Margaret's parents were Thomas White and Margaret O'neil (I think.) I know Margaret had a sister named Lily.

John and Margaret were married 31 Dec 1913 in or around Blantyre, Scotland and had Margaret, Catherine, Thomas, Patrick, John, James, and Francis. All moved to Detroit, MI in the 1920's, except for the twins Jim and Frank who were born in Detroit.

I'd love to find someone who has any details about John and Margaret's parents and siblings.

Hi Mary,
I found your message intriguing because I have a McDade married to a Boyle!
Catherine McDade married John Boyle in Donegal, Ireland.
They had at least 3 children in Ireland. They then headed to Scotland...Airdrie, Lanark, Scotland. Then they had 4 more children. John died between 1860 & 1861. Catherine died a pauper in 1867. Her parents were not listed on her death certificate.
Anyway, I don't have anymore information to provide as to her siblings or WHERE in Donegal they came from.
But does any of this sound familiar?
Have a great day!
Jennifer

Statutory records for births only started in Ireland in 1864. Likewise RC marriages. So to find any records for this couple you'd be relying a lot on church records, where they exist.

McDade is not a very common name in Fermanagh. The 1901 census only shows 14 entries, all in the electoral districts of Maguiresbridge, Derrylea or Drumkeeran. All were Roman Catholic which helps narrow the search.

www.census.nationalarchives.ie

You could start by searching the records of RC churches covering those townlands, to find Andrew's birth. (Andrew wasn't a particularly common name, and since McDade was not that common either, you might get lucky. When looking for a marriage between Andrew McDade & Jane, bear in mind they would have married in her parish, not his, so it may not be in the same parish as his birth).

Most of these townlands are probably in the RC diocese of Clogher. I think Wikipedia will have a full list of the parishes within that diocese.

Unfortunately the church records are a bit erratic. There are many gaps.

You could try sending a letter to the local papers (Impartial Reported and the Fermanagh Herlad) looking for anyone with knowledge of the family. Or try writing to any McDades in the current phone book.

There is a historical society in Lisnaskea, that may be able to suggest some further lines of enquiry.

Elwyn

Hi,Karol
My name is Bob. My mother desends from the Lyter family. Her father was Stanley Q Lyter (1913 to 1948) for which I'm trying verify his parents. His death cert indicates Albert and Lena Lyter. I can't confirm which Albert. Ida's parents were Albert Harmon Lyter and Anna (or Annie) Mary Dolan. They were married in Oscelona Mills, PA on 7-17-1883. They had at least 9-children, one of which was Albert H. Lyter Jr., but all the census reports indicate that he never married or was single.
Bob

Hi Susan,
I have a Catherine McDade who was born about 1822, I also assume Donegal. She married John Boyle (born in Donegal). In about 1850, they moved to New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland. I have found NO other information on her...ancestrally speaking. I have plenty from Scotland and then her descendants. You are probably wondering how this relates to you, but I am going to try to see if I can find that connection...your message is the first clue. If you can provide information about where in Scotland, I might be able to find a connection.
Thank You! Have a great week!
Hello Mary --

I read your 2001 message about your grandfather Leo McDade with much interest. My research intersects at the point of Leo's wife, Marguerite. I have her 1973 obituary, but not her death certificate. Unfortuntely, the obit does NOT mention parents or her maiden name, which is what I am seeking. Do have that? If so, what documentation do you have regarding that?

I have a 1964 obituary from the Santa Maria (Calif) Times for a Mary Wilson (maiden name HAND). One of the surviving family members mentioned is Mary Hand Wilson's sister, specifically, "Mrs. Margarite McDade of San Diego." I also have them together on a 1900 US census with their mother - no sister Grace, however.

Have you ever heard the surname HAND in connection with your family? Now I wonder if Marguerite McDade and Mary Hand Wilson had the same father. . . .

Cafi Cohen, cfcohen@pacbell.net
I am looking for cousins who are descended from Arthur McDade (b. 1800) through his son John McDade (b. about 1845) and John's son James J. McDade (b. August 1874). John's other son Edward McDade (b 1879) lived with his family in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

I am descended from James and Edward's half brother John Coe (b. 1864) and have information and seek to share photos and info.

James' children:

Elizabeth (b. 1894)
John P. (b. 1895)
James J. Jr. (Dec 10, 1904 to November 1980)
Joseph E. (b. 1906)
Sylvester (b. 1912)

Thank you,

Chris
Shiloh, Illinois
