Our claim to fame with the McDermott clan centers areoun Rochester NY. My dads mother was from a very large family, but Im told there were only two girls- Grace Mae b1885 d1963 and Anne b1879. There was a brother, John who worked at Kodak in Rochester, and was one of the first security guards. I believe he was also a twin. There was also Joseph Patrick, who was killed in WW1, George, who married Ida Yandow Crandall and Fredrick Grant, who also went by Thomas Grant McDermott. He was always refered to as Grant. My grandmother Grace Married Alfred Yandow. Thats all I have on the McDermotts. Not even sure what their fathers name was. Mother was Eliza Yandow. Oh the mystery and no one left to ask. Still do not know who Walter and James were. regards Kate Yandow Williams.

I have a John McDermott b1829 Ire (US Census of 1860), do not have John's wife.
John had a son, Peter b1859, he married Esther (I believe she was from NY) and they had: Edward b1883, Robert b 1885, George b1885, Albert b1890 and Lawrence b1894. (This from US Census 1900).
I have this from my research of Edward Tobin who lived in Waukegan, illinois at the same time. The McDermott and Tobin families were very close, the relationship apparently started with John and continued into the next generation.
I believe Peter had siblings and two I think were females, could have been others. I haven't looked further given my focus has been on the Tobin line. However, more recently I have come to believe the two families may have known each other in Ireland.
If you believe this Peter is your GGrandfather please let me know.
Gerald Tobin
It is interesting my ggrandfather Peter McDermott was born in Rochester, NY in 1857. I was never able to find him or his family in the census. His parents were John McDermott born in Ireland and Mary Pauli born in Ireland. His siblings were: John A., Mary & Ellen all born in Illinois after him.

Searching for descendants of James Peter McDermott of Chicago

I am searching for the descendants of my great-uncle James Peter McDermott. James' parents were Michael and Mary McDermott of Benton Harbor, Michigan. James was born in Chicago in 1888 and returned to Chicago where he married Mary Tobin and raised his children.

I have come across a post from James' grandson, (also named James)from 1997 in which the author requests contact from possible relatives and gives his email address. I have attempted to contact him via this email address, but it comes back as undeliverable.

James, if you are reading this, I am the granddaughter of your grandfather's brother, Louis Vincent McDermott. My mother (Patricia Adell McDermott was born and raised in Benton Harbor, Michigan. My family is from Grand Rapids, Michigan. I am now living in Chicago also, and would love to hear from you.

Julie

I have a picture of 5the young boys taken in Rochester NY approximately 1920. I know three of the boys were the sons of my gr Aunt Ida McDermott. George born 1919, Lawrence Brooks Crandall born 19131919 and Charles Fredrick Crandall born 1908. The Crandall boys were from a first marriage. GEORGE was from her marriage to George McDermott, ornaments 1880 died 1964. The two other boys are named Walter and James McDermott. From their size in the picture born between 1908-1913. Do any of these people sound familiar. Appreciate any info. Thanks Kate Yandow Williams

William McDermott Jr. pushes Gov. Graves buttons, Montgomery, AL 1937

from the Mobile, Alabama newspaper:

Thursday, March 4, 1937

• "MONTGOMERY -- Confusion reigned in Gov. Bibb Graves' office for a time today. ... Things were going wrong in a hurry, with call 'buzzers' sounding throughout the executive suite. ... He hadn't buzzed for anybody, but the buzzers continued to ring. Someone looked over his big private desk at the end of the office.

"There stood four-year-old William McDermott, Jr., son of a Mobile state representative, merrily punching his tiny fingers against shiny mother-of-pearl buttons the governor uses to call his assistants from other offices. The boy had walked in unnoticed.

"Representative McDermott, visiting in outer executive offices, missed his son about this time. He got into the private office in time to see the governor capturing a couple of goldfish from a large bowl to present 'Little Bill,' who had made friends all around."

• Not my line, just sharing.

michael mcdermott born 1841 Ireland

I am looking for information on Michael McDermott born 1841 in Ireland. He married Joanna Sheen Born 1843 Ireland. They came to England and lived in Glossop Derbyshire. He was a journeyman tailor. They both probably worked as weavers in Glossop. I know they had one son called Michael born 1871. I believe they returned to Ireland before 1901 as they do not appear on census returns. I have been told they returned home and died in Ireland. I was told it might be Dublin but this might not be reliable information so I really don't know where abouts in Ireland they were born, married or died.

I'm looking for information on the parents of my husband's great grandfather, Thomas Charles McDermott, born in 1858 in Roscommon. On Thomas' death certificate from Chicago (figuring he immigrated there sometime before 1887), their names are Cornelius McDermott and Catherine. I also found a James McDermott who was born in 1836 and died in Mass. in 1886 with the same parental names listed on his death certificate as Thomas. Any information would be appreciated!

Hi Brian. About 2 years ago, I emailed with a family member of yours. He was researching his wife's family. I gave the baptismal info of your Dominic and the marriage record of Roger and his wife...O'Brien was her maiden name if I remember correctly. I found the info when I was at St. Kevins during the summer of 2007.

At the time, I think Roger's family tree only had one child Dominic. Is that still true?

I'm sure that we have to be related, but I have not been able to find the connection.

Kathy
email: BostonKathryn@yahoo.com
aka WinnieAgnes@yahoo.com

Hello,
Your story is similar to mine. Everything I know about Derby comes from the marriage records of my Irish ancestors who married there. Thomas has proven elusive to us as well. I don't know the names of the siblings, or where they came from in Ireland. Michael listed "Thomas" as his father on his birth certificate.
Hi

I cannot help you really but I am interested in your connection to Derby. I had a James MCDERMOTT who married an Eliza CASEY in Sheffield in 1853 and then went on to have a son James in Chesterfield Derbyshire in 1856.

On his marriage certificate he gives his father's name as Thomas. He also says in one census that he was born in Cavan but I have been to Cavan Records office and this Thomas has proved elusive. I believe that this elder James was born in 1832.

It is the residence and family of Thomas that interests me and I wonder if you have any connections with these people at all.

Of course, it may be that James Snr was not actually born in Cavan but only remembers living there.

Kind Regards
GL

HI Jerry,
I am crafting a response to your email. Our John's are different, mine was definitely born in LaSalle, IL. But my ancestor Michael (1822 - 1897) had 6 brothers and 1 sister that I cannot account for either in Ireland or here. He came to work in the coal mines in PA, because he already had in-laws or other family there, then moved to Peru (LaSalle County) to work in the IL coal mines with several of his wife's siblings. Our family believes he was traveling with a large group of his wife's (Catherine Culloo)family and/or a large group of his own family. Several members of his wife's family and he all went to Derby, Derbyshire England before coming to America. Many married in St Mary's Church there. I have those records. As to there being many John McDermotts with the same story - I am sure there are, just like there are a million Michael's, Thomas's, Patricks..etc the Irish had a system for naming their children that utilized all of the same names over and over! Makes for confusing research. I would not be surprised if our families were somehow related, but then I would not be surprised if they weren't! ;) I am just posting everywhere I can to try and suss out a living family member. Since I live in Chicago, I am quite sure I am surrounded by living family members and would love to meet some!
Julie

I'm not sure if I have response to this post in the past as at the moment I do not have my records available. I have a John McDermott family in Waukegan, Illinois, in 1860. I do not have John's wife's name. They had several children the oldest was Peter, the other children's names I would need to look up.
Peter's married Ester and she came from NY as I recall.
I would suspect that there were quite a few John McDermott's who found their way to the US and Illinois during the 1840 - 1850's
But if Waukegan is a possibility for your John we may be looking at the same family.
Jerry Tobin

That's interesting as my McDermott's married sisters from Clare. But they were not from Clare. From what we can ascertain they met in Cohb and traveled to the US from there. That would make sense as Cohb in Cork was where most of the immigrant Irish got on the boats. I have pictures and newspaper articles on the McDermott family in Chicago. McDermott's I didn't know growing up (I'm from Chicago).

Maureen
Mistysattic@aol.com

I suspect that she died young since she appears in the 1860 census, but not the 1870 census.

This John McDermott is buried at East Cedar Hill Cemetery with his wife, Eliza Downey, and his son, William H.

Just thought a clarification might help someone else.
Your message was interesting, my McDermott's from Illinois originally were in PA. We have been unable to locate them in Ireland. When they left they were likely traveling with members of the Collue (Cullow, Culoo many variations on records)family whom we believe we have traced to Clare. So we have been looking for a Thomas (Our ancestor's father - a husbandman) McDermott in Clare. My ancestors actually went to Derby, Derbyshire which is where my 2nd great grandparents were married in 1855. They left Ireland prior to 1850. Any of this sound vaguely familiar? If so, I would love to hear from you at jistjul@yahoo.com. Also, Michael McDermott (1822-1897 LaSalle, IL)had six brothers and one sister and we have no idea who they are or where they went!

I do'nt know but on Dominic's baptismal certificate ther is a sponsor called Catherine McDermottroe but I have no idea of her relationship to Roger- mother, sister. aunt, cousin?????. Dominic christened his firstborn- Catherine- in 1879 so I suspect a reasonably close relationship. One of Dominic's sons -Patrick born 1887/88 emigrated to USA sometime after the 1901 census. If you have any relevant information please e-mail me- brianmcdermott2010@gmail.com
