McDills came to Northern Ireland from Ayrshire, Scotland in the mid-1600s during the Ulster Plantation also. Our family tree is littered with Johns and Thomases. Members of that same line came to the US in 1772 with the Rev. William Martin, a Covenanter Presbyterian minister, and settled in South Carolina. Descendants include noted Presbyterian ministers and theologians as well as distinguished military personnel and politicians. I just returned from Northern Ireland with a great deal of information gleaned from the Centre for Migration Studies at the Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh.

Hi Sandra!
Chances are more than good that you are a descendant of one of the children of John McDill (1675-1761)and Janet Leslie of Ballymena Parish, County Antrim, N.I. Which one will be the test. You can purchase a copy of the book McDills In America because it has now been reprinted and rereleased. Barring that, you can go to the nearest Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons), and they'll be happy to get you started on your quest. I know for a fact that they have the book McDills In America available on microfiche. If I can be of any further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me by email at 'lazlom@hotmail.com'. P.S. The McDills also have a Facebook page! Get to know your peeps!

Leslie MacDill (Les)
Tallahassee, FL

There is a last name of Dill that is English, but my y-dna is either Scottish or Irish. This is why I wonder if I have an ancestor who changed his name from McDill to Dill. The y-dna is the dna of the y-chromosome. Only males have the y-chromosome. The female has the x-chromosome. What is interesting about the y-chromsome is that it is either identical or almost identical between father and son. In other words, my y-chromosome should be almost identical to my ancestor named John Dill who lived over 300 years ago. The x-chromosome in the female is a mixture of genes from both the mother and father. The y-chromsome in a male only comes from his father. The dna of the y-chromsome is called y-dna. By comparing the y-dna between males, it can be determined if they are possibly related. I have posted my y-dna at www.ysearch.org. I have a y-dna match with another Dill who has also posted his y-dna at www.ysearch.org. I am related to this Dill but we do not know for sure who our common ancestor was except he had to live before 1730.

My family is from Ethelsville,Alabama located in Pickens County. My great grandfather's name was James (Jim) McDill and my great grandmother was Ida Mae Wright McDill. They were born in the late 1880's and died in 1967 and 1970. I am very interested in finding out who and where we come from. Our family name is not very common in this area. Hope to hear from you. Sandra McDill-McCool

D. C. McDill - 1901 Arizona

Found in the Arizona Silver Belt newspaper from Globe, AZ. June 20, 1901. Library of Congress, Chronicling America.

http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/

D. C. McDill, a former resident of Phoenix, arrived with his wife from Chloride yesterday morning. About a month ago McDill was shot by his wife at Chloride, it is claimed accidentally, while she was trying to shoot another man who was strengthening her husband's habits of intemperance. It was thereby established that a woman with a revolver is as great a menace to bystanders as is a woman throwing a stone. It was at first thought that he would necessarily die and it is not yet a ten-to-one shot that he will got well, though the longer one lives after the perforation of his bones with a bullet the more hope there is for him. He looks like a ghost, and has come to Phoenix for more skillful surgical attention than can be had at Chloride.
From the Phoenix Republican.

I am looking to find a marriage between the Cree and McDill family. As my great great grandfather Thomas McDill had twin boys in 1884, my great grandfather Thomas Mcdill and another called David Cree McDill. Sadly he died at only 8 months old, but it is usual in my family and was back then, for children to take someone else in the families surname as their middle name. Hence I am looking for any connections between the Cree and McDill family in the 1800s Ayrshire area.

Margaret McDill married John Peden sometime in the mid 1730's in County Antrim, Ireland. They migrated to South Carolina in 1772 aboard the James and Mary, one of five ships of Rev. William Martin. Also aboard the ship was Thomas McDill, brother to Margaret McDill Peden. John Peden and Margaret McDill Peden are buried in the Moffat-Strong-McDill Cemetery in Chester Co. SC as is Thomas McDill.

In 1900 "The Pedens of America" was written and later updated in 1961 and covers the family of John Peden and Margaret McDill. We are in the process of a new book on John Peden and Margaret McDill and are seeking information concerning our McDill ancestry. I have seen some information from "McDills in America" published in 1940 that lists the parents of both Margaret and Thomas McDill as well as their children.

I hope someone can assist with McDill information and help with the following questions:

1. I have found early records in Ireland to be very poor indeed. If a date in the 1600's and 1700's is quoted I am always interested in the source. For example all of the published information concerning the ancestry of our John Peden b. 1709 in Irland has proven to be incorrect, or highly suspect at best. What evidence is there that John McDill and Janet Leslie were the parents of Thomas and Margaret McDill? Woods lists no source for this statement in "McDills in America".
2. Were there other brothers and sisters? Nathaniel McDill arrived on another of the 5 ships of Rev. Martin in 1772 in SC. Was he a brother?
3. A number of Reformed Presbyterians migrated out of Chester Co., SC for IL, IN, and OH in the early 1800's because of slavery issues. Included in this migration were several Pedens, McDills and related families. Any information on this migration would be greatly appreciated.

Mark Paden
mpaden@hargray.com

I have been reading these and am very interested.I have done research through Scottish clans to purchase a kilt.McDill comes from the ancient dalriadan clans fom the name Dougal. These original clans invaded Scotland from northern Ireland.I ended up buying a Macdougall tartan. I am assuming this would be the direct lineage. My name and my fathers and his and so on are William McDill or variations including Alexander and John.Hope some of this can help.

I am looking for info on Alice McDill, born about 1871 in St. Clair Co AL and daughter of General Taylor McDill and his first wife Adelia Ann Nichols.

From the census and other sources I think this family may have been in the Grayson Co TX area or across the Red River in the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory or what later became Bryan Co or Marshall Co OK, in the 1890 period.

Alice McDill may be the second wife of Jesse Cowan, who was also from St. Clair Co AL. My only documentation is the Social Security application of one of their daughters, listing Alice McDill as her mother's maiden name. In the 1900 census Jesse Cowan was in the Chickasaw Nation listed as a widower, and had two daughters Leona E. Cowan born Dec 1892 and Viola Cowan born Dec 1893.

I can supply specific info from the census and cemeteries etc that support their locations.

Anyone know anything more about Alice McDill?

Gary Cowan
Fort Worth, Texas

I have him listed as born in Ireland in 1771, married to a Jane McDonald; immigrating to SC in 1820. Do you have any information that might help me with Thomas?
I checked your names in "McDills in America" by Robert M. Woods, published in 1940. He has a brief chapter on McDills in Alabama, stating that he did not know where they originally came from. He lists two (brothers?), one of whom lived in Georgia before moving to Alabama. He is Milton McDILL (d. 1890), married to Liza _______ (d. 1895), both buried near Gadsden. This couple had 6 children: James (d. in war); William (d.1896); Newt (d. 1904); B. S. (b. abt. 1847); General Taylor (b. 13 Feb. 1848 in Cobb Co, GA, d. 2 March 1931, buried in Ennis, TX, md. Martha McCRORY); and Henry (md. Fanny ______).

Henry and Fanny had 6 children: Reuben Taylor, Eliza, Colonel, Forney, Lily, and Lela. There are no dates for them. A son is listed for Reuben and 3 grandchildren are listed.

I would be glad to photocopy these pages (they have more info regarding the children of General Taylor McDILL) if you would like them. Send me your snail mail address if you want them.

The name WEEMS is not in the index. There is an Eliza Ann McDILL (1835-1921) in Ohio.

Sniffed around Ballymena, Broughnow,
Broughshane environs, no new finds.
Have copy of Woods' 1940 McDill Genealogy; there is one out
on the Chestnut (all spellings) family, so heavily enmeshed with McDills...Will check Woods' index if you wish.
Not much has been done, we have entered into an age of copiers, micro-wave genies.

Debra
With regards to Thomas Alexander, I understand that most of the information in McDills in America is erroneous. Briefly, Thomas was son of Nathaniel McDill (Jr) and wife Ann, believed to be Ann Leslie. There are conflicting dates of birth, but he was certainly born before 1830, probably in Abbeville Co SC. When his parents moved to GA, he remained in SC with his brother James and was enumerated with him in the 1850 census. By 1855, he was in Tallapoosa Co AL with the rest of the family, where he seems to have gotten involved in land speculation with his brother-in-law David Sargent. There are a number of deeds involving the two men. Thomas seems to have gotten himself into debt. He married in Chambers Co in 1859 and by 1860 was in MS, where land was cheaper. He served in the Confederate Army.
LEDWARDS6@nc.rr.com

Nathaniel and Ann McDill were in Coweta Co GA in 1850. Thomas was in the household of his brother James McDill in Abbeville Co SC p. 63. Both men were listed as heirs of Nathaniel in an 1857 deed in Tallapoosa Co (they sold their father's land after his death). Thomas was in Tallapoosa Co by December 2, 1852, when he and David Sargent bought land together. He left AL sometime after Jan 21, 1860 (he sold land he owned in Tallapoosa Co on that date). David Sargent lived near the Chambers/Tallapoosa Co line in the late 1850s and was actually enumerated in Chambers Co in 1860. I have often wondered if Thomas lived with him during this time. This could explain why Thomas married a woman from Chambers County, when there are no other records for him from Chambers Co. I know that Thomas's mother lived with the Sargents after his father death. David and Isabella Sargent were my 3rd great-grandparents.

Debra
Do you know where Thomas is buried? There is a book on MS Confederates that lists a death date, but it doesn't show his burial site. I have Thomas' Confederate military records and his wife's pension application. My husband's family is from Henry Co VA, no relation to anyone in MS that I know of.
