Hi Trojanspirit

I noticed on your tree that you have Thomas Pou/Pew McDowell Jr. The junior is important and so is the date 1920 for his birth

There is a Enlistment Record for a Tom P McDowell Jr.
born 1920 in Mississippi county or city Jones. He enlisted 20 Nov 1945 at Camp Blanding Florida. Air Corps, Sergent He had 2 years of high school was married and occupation was doormen

There is a 1930 census document for a Tom P McDowell who is 46 years old. He and his family are living in Beat 3, Panola Mississippi. His wife is named Nannie. They have 7 children including a Tom P McDowell age 9

There is a good chance this is the Tom P McDowell Jr you are looking for. His father Tom P McDowell was born 1884 in Mississippi and his father was born in Georgia probably around 1864

That wasn't to hard. I hope it is the right man

Steve
Australia

Ok Here is what I have managed so far.
Grandmother- Norma J Mcdowell Sullivan~ B. July 9,1942 D. March 17, 1985(86) Married to Bobby J Sullivan
G-grandmother- Doris White Mcdowell~ B. Jan. 25,1923 D. Somewhere around the mid 1990's, Married to Tom Pew McDowell.
The passenger logs state they were both born in Laurel, Mississippi, USA.

They were returning from Germany in 1947 because Tom was military, and it was shortly after WWII. From what I can remember, my grandmother said she was an army brat, meaning they moved around a lot because of his military career, he was an officer in the military (I think it was a gunnery sergeant). I believe they also lived in Japan for a while, but I couldn't find anything for that either.

Even with the added information of her maiden name, and my G-grandfather's name, plus the dates... I STILL can not get any "hits" on this line of my family.

Oh, and Norma graduated Highschool in Washington...
So, what do I do now? Severely frustrated. :-(

Trying to track down some McDowell lineage and I have hit a brick wall in the very beginning. My G-mother was Norma J McDowell, her mother was Doris A McDowell. Siblings were Joann and Wanda Lynn McDowell. Never met or knew my G-grandfather and do not have his name. Searching records, I found passenger lists from 1947 when norma, doris, and joann came back from germany, but I can not find anything else on any of them. I know he was a Gunnery Sgt in WW2 and died shortly before I was born (mid-70's). If I could just get past this hump I could figure the rest...
Any clues, tips, suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. :)

Matthew Mcdowell, PA, mid 18XX

I am looking for Matthew McDowell, the father of Effie Ann McDowell, the mother of Samuel C. Hopkins. Family information indicates he lived from about 1822 until 1884, and was the son of James (1790-1836) and Sarah Brandon McDowell (1793-1855). We know from James’ will that he had a son “Matthew H”; the will also lists other children.

A paper of family information gives a few details of his life, mainly taken from census records. Further study of those records, however, leads to some as-yet unanswered questions. We are left with questions as to who ( which Mathew) is the father of Effie Ann.

The family records quote from the 1850 and 1880 Census. Below is the information from the 1850 Census, copied from the Internet, which agrees with what is on the family paper.

1850 Census, Wolf Creek Township, Mercer Co., PA
Schedule No. 34, Frame No. 881, Enumeration Date 26 Oct 1850
40 249 253 McDOWELL, Sarah 56 F
41 249 253 McDOWELL, Sarah 28 F
42 249 253 McDOWELL, Thomas 25 M Farmer
1 249 253 McDOWELL, James 24 M
2 249 253 McDOWELL, Nancy 20 F
3 249 253 McDOWELL, Amanda 18 F
4 249 253 BRANDEN, Sarah Jane 3 F
5 250 254 McDOWELL, Mathew H. 27 M Farmer
6 250 254 McDOWELL, Melinda 20 F

The “249” and “250” are the “dwelling number” and the “253” and “254” are the “family number. We see that Sarah, by 1850 a widow, lived with several of her children, and next door lived Mathew H. and his wife Melinda.

The family paper also gives information from the 1880 Census as follows:
1880 Census Wolf Creek-Venango Co.
Matthew McDowell 58
Frances(Wife of Matthew) 27
children
Ella 6
Effie Ann 2
Marie 1

The paper goes onto say “Later had 3 more children
Lamont (9-24-1884 -- 2/13/?)
Maud Millicent
George Washington

Again, family information indicates that Frances’ maiden name was Allen. No information on her is know before this entry. Who were her parents?
I have not been able to verify the Matthew/Francis information as I do not have a copy of the original census information, nor could I find it on the web: the Mormon site has the 1880 census on line, and they are not listed in Wolf Creek, Mercer Co. Venango Co. does not have a Wolf Creek township listed, but a list of all the McDowells in the County contained no Matthew or Frances.

That is all the original information I had. I hope some of the other family members have more, because what I have found results in questioning if Matthew, the father of Effie Ann, is the same Matthew who was the son of James.

For reasons that will become apparent below, I think we are looking at two different people. I will call them the Illinois Mathew (one t) and the Pennsylvania Matthew (two t’s). Mathew is almost certainly the son of James and Sarah; Matthew, the father of Effie Ann is a mystery.

MATHEW OF ILLINOIS

The following is an 1880 census record from Knox County Illinois:

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace
Mathew H. MCDOWELL Self M Male W 57 PA Farmer PA PA
Melinda MCDOWELL Wife M Female W 49 PA Keeping House PA PA
Asher MCDOWELL Son S Male W 23 IL Working Out PA PA
Caroline MCDOWELL Dau S Female W 21 IL At Home PA PA
Orin MCDOWELL Son S Male W 18 IL At Home PA PA
Owen MCDOWELL Son S Male W 18 IL At Home PA PA
Anna MCDOWELL Dau S Female W 14 IL At School PA PA
Orpha MCDOWELL Dau S Female W 12 IL At School PA PA

Further research revealed the following 1860 Census records:
Victoria, Knox, Co, IL , June 11, 1860

M.H. McDowell 37, PA, farm laborer
Melinda, 31, PA
Male, name can't read, 9, PA (might say James)
Moses, 8, PA
John, 6, PA
Asher, 4, IL
Mariah, 2, IL

From this we conclude that Mathew H and Melinda moved to Illinois sometime around 1855 ( between the birth of John and Asher), were there in 1860 and 1880. But if they were there in 1880 – with Melinda still married to Mathew, could this be the same Matthew, married to Frances in the family paper?

Why do I think that the Mathew H of 1850 is the same as the Mathew H of Knox County? Besides the ages, places of birth, and wife’s name there is the following:

The web page for Henry Co, Illinois gives excerpts from a history of the county as follows:

On the 5th of March, 1884, Mr. Miller was united in marriage to Miss Harriet McDowell, a daughter of William and Caroline (McCoy) McDowell. By birth and ancestry Mrs. Miller belongs to Pennsylvania. Her paternal grandfather, James McDowell, was a native of that state, followed farming, and was a soldier in the War of 1812. He married Miss Sarah Brandon and they had the following children: William B., Jane, Nancy, Henderson, Thomas, Sarah, David and James…. Mrs. Miller's parents were born in Pennsylvania and came to Illinois in 1876, taking up their residence near Victoria, Knox County.

That is, Mathew H’s brother William moved to Knox County in 1876. Note that “Mathew” is not listed as a son… but “Henderson” is. Could that be what the H stands for? Did William move there to be near his brother?

The 1880 Knox Co. census gives:

Household:
Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace
William B. She was granted a warrant for 40 acres in 1851. I do not know exactly where. It needs to be noted that (another, the same?) Sarah McDowell also bought land in 1839, one piece of which was contiguous with the land above. This Sarah was a resident of Livingston Co at the time. I have no records of our Sarah buying land in 1839. I do not know if this is the same Sarah, but one has to wonder…:

MCDOWELL SARAH E2NE 22 27N 06E 3 05/06/1839 LIVINGSTON
MCDOWELL SARAH SW 14 27N 06E 3 05/06/1839 LIVINGSTON
MCDOWELL SARAH SENW 14 27N 06E 3 02/04/1853 LIVINGSTON

THE PENNSYLVANIA MATTHEW

Now, recalling that Frances’s maiden name is purported to be Allen (how do we know that?)

The Venanago Co RootsWeb page, under the 1870 census, has the following entry:

1870 CENSUS, SANDYCREEK TWP. ROLL # 1460
198 - McDOWELL, M.A. - age 45, farmer; Augusta J. 17 (male); Francis 17 (female); Melvina ALLEN 21.

Wow! M. McDowell – born about 1825, Francis (female), born about 1853, “Allen” as a last name!
Is this M.A. the Matthew we want? Is Francis his wife? ( right age) Is Melvina Allen, perhaps Francis’s sister, born about 1849 ?

Hold on a minute: a search on Melvina Allen results in the following:

MELVINA ALLEN
Female

Event(s):
Birth: 1849 , Knox, Illinois

Parents:
Father: WILLIAM M. ALLEN Family
Mother: AMERICA ANN ELIZABETH MAXEY

Born in Knox County? While we are not sure this is the same Melvina, its an interesting coincidence!

Finally, if we presume that the location where James and Sarah McDowell are buried is somehow relevant, the following information on “Allen” is provided from the burial records of Center Church Cemetery:

Sarah M. (Brandon) Allen, (wife of Daniel M. Allen)Willshire Allen, age 1 yrs.Jacob H. Allen, age 1 yr.Elen M. Allen, aged 5 yrs.(Sons and Daus. Of Sarah M. & Daniel M. Allen) b. 1820 d. 02Aug1853b. 1846 d. 04lSept1847b. 1850 d. 18Nov1851b. 1848 d. 02Nov1853

So, Sarah Allen died in 1853, the year that Francis was born. Did she die at childbirth? Was she Francis’s mother?

CONCLUSIONS, QUESTIONS, and FURTHER RESEARCH

1. Mathew H. of Illinois is the son of James and Sarah Brandon McDowell. He is not the father of Effie Ann. Hence Sarah and James are not her grandparents.

2. The only information I have about who is the father of Effie Ann is her obituary which indicates she is he daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Matthew McDowell.

a. Is M.A. McDowell of the 1870 census our Matthew?
b. Finding the 1880 census which gives Effie Ann and her parents would be helpful.
c. Is there 1850 or 1860 census data on M.A. ?

I recently received some information about Margaret O'Neal McDowell who is recognized as a Patriot of the American Revolution. Apparently, at the age of 59 she took heroic actions in support of the Kings Mountain Campaign. I believe she diverted British troops from the Quaker Meadows rendezvous of more than a thousand Over Mountain Men. I obtained this information from the Historical Society in Morganton, NC.

Hi Marcie -

Sorry it took this long to reply - first... it's McDonald Township not McDowell which threw me off abit. 2nd - I double-checked my McDowell family (my widowed great-grandmother and 5 children) that resided in Washburn and found that they left about 1908 and don't fit your timeframe.

I did look at another McDowell family that was in Exeter which just south of McDonald Twp. from the mid to late 1920's thru the 30's. William Auburn McDowell was in Cassville at the time of his father's death in 1946 as he the informant on the death certificate. At some point William ended up in Texas where he died on 27 May 1975. His death certificate shows his birth as 4 April 1913 in Cape Fair, MO which is in Stone Co., just east of Barry. He would have been about the right age. His parents were Victor Otto and Clara (Wilson) McDowell. You can find them in the 1930 US Census for Exeter, Barry Co., MO. ED 6, Sheet 1B, living on Church Street.

Please let me know what comes of your lead on 'Tom/Thomas' McDowell and I'll keep checking thru my grandfather's cousins to see if any one of them may be your Thomas.

Thanks,
Diane (McDowell) Winters

Diane, I have an update to the McDowell that I am looking for. His name was Tom (Thomas) McDowell living in Barry County (possibly around the McDowell Township) in 1933 - 1934 timeframe.

If I can find more, I will send you that information.

Thank you for any information you may be able to provide.

Have a great day.
Marcie K.
James H McDowell (born PA, died 1848 Beardstown, IL) & wife Sarah Gillis

Hi there

Seeking further information about the above. What I currently know is based on an excerpt from a 1915 history of Cass County:

James McDowell was born in Pennsylvania, and in his youth was a deep sea sailor and a mechanic. Later he was in the distilling business, and followed teaming for some years at Beardstown, Ill. He married Sarah Gillis, a native of Ohio, in Cass County. Mr. McDowell died in the prime of life, in 1848, his widow subsequently marrying Thomas Cown. Mr. Cown died in 1865, and his widow passed away in 1874.

If anyone can help fill in any of the blanks, I would be very grateful!

Thanks and best regards
M McDowell

Hi Diane. Thank you for responding.

Unfortunately, I don't know any more than that. My mother never learned the name of her father but, she was told that her father was a McDowell and lived in the vicinity of the McDowell Township, Barry County, Missouri. My mother, Bonnie May Conway, was born in 1934 so, I am searching (for a needle in a haystack) for any McDowell who may have lived in that vicinity in 1933. My mother's mother, Pearl Elizabeth Conway, was 18 when she had my mother.

Everyone who might have known this information on my mother's side has passed away. So, I am just trying to see if I can find anything.

Thank you for any insight you may have.

Have a great day.
Marcie Vantrease

Before 1200 we were the Macdougall's of Galloway and at the signing of the Ragmans Roll on November 1292, we changed to Macdowall's. The McDowell's e came upon arrival to Ireland. Most moved of in the 16th to 18th centuries but some had arrived in Ireland during the late 1200's taking up residence in county Roscommon after coming over as Gallowglasses in service to the High King of Ireland who was suppose to be from a related Clan.

There is of course more information on the MacDougall's and their ancestry available online and in books etc...

Hope this was helpful

Tullylish is about 1 mile from Guilford. I visited there in 2004. There is an old cemetery there with lots of McDowells. I will check my notes, videos, and photos to see what I have. Some of the McDowells from that area migrated to Greenwich, NY and Albany, NY. I am acquainted with Dorothy McDowell, aged 90, whose parents came from Tullylish.

Margaret Cowan McDowell the widow of Lewis McDowell came to the US from Scotland her children some time in the mid-1800s. My GG Grand mother was one of these children. Her name was Matilda Caroline McDowell and I think her siblings were Sarah Jane, Joseph, Jamima, James Samuel,Mary Anna, Elizabeth Harriett and Andrew. I am looking for any information I can find on members of this family. I'm not sure where they lived but Matilda Caroline was living in Indianapolis, IN in 1860 and she married William Rufus Hough in Preble County Ohio in 1862. She and her husband lived in Greenfield, IN. Any information about this family would be greatly appreciated.

There is a book called the McDowell Saga by one Donald? Baird, a relation to the McDowell's in Huntingdon. The James McDowell in Huntingdon came from the McDowell's in Balston New york near Albany. There was John McDowell Sr.,of Albany, an Officer from Scotland,I think..Renfrewshire or Dumphrieshire and trained in the British army and a Loyal Presbyterian that had a son Rev John McDowell famous for his work in the bay of Quinty and Brockville. Also, his son Rev.John McDowell was related to the McDowell's at Hudson new York and Schenectady.
You will find them in the Huntingdon Gleaner records on line.
James McDowell's grandson Thain MacDowell was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery at the Somme.

There had been several attempts to verify much of the ancestral gerontologist on the McDowell's who moved from Surry County North Carolina to McDowell County, Maybeury, West Virginia.I do know that Hubert O. Had a twin and that the parents died during their early childhood. Being the son of Hubert O. and Mamie Johnson McDowell's youngest son, Carney Franklin, I heard stories, but, no one really talked much about the childhood. My grandparents had nine children to survive into adulthood, however, records indicate that there were others born that did not survive. all siblings and their spouses have died. It is still not clear whether there is a connection between the famous Presley's; however, each of my Aunts and uncles told the same story. My wife has been doing research for a few years and has not been successful in connecting all of the links. I do believe that the courthouse records in Surry County would shed some light on this. If I remember correctly, all of the children were born in in North Carolina, except the three youngest, which would include my father Carney, Mildred "Mickey", and Francis "Penny". Sometime in the late 1930's the family relocated to 820 Old Bramwell Road, Bluefield, WV 24701. Hubert O. and Mamie are buried at Woodlawn Cemetery. Bluewell, WV . I think Lou's daughter, Patsy is still living and she would be the one who may have the family bibles and other documents. I've lost touch with her, however, Howard's son Hubert, 'Buddy" may have contact information for her. I am not sure if this is any rel help. I too would like to know the real story.
