Hi, I have a ton of information for you. my name is Sean Patrick Lynch I am also a decedent of Patrick Mcvey and Catherine Reilly McEvay. I grew up in the same house in Providence that there eight children grew up in.(21 Berlin St. Providence RI 02908)Those eight children were orphaned when Patrick Mcvey died after building St. John the evangelist church on federal hill from a blood infection from a knee injury in the 1870's and his wife died 16 weeks later from "heart-ache."causes unknown. the eight children were left on there own and the second youngest daughter was your grandmother Catherine who married Bartholomew. I am the decedent of her old sister Ellen Mcvey who married Michael Lynch and took over the estate on Berlin street. the only house in the area at the time and is now part of the inner city. My grandfather Joesph Michael Lynch who later inherited the house and resided at 59 Austin Avenue in Greenville RI sold it to my father Joesph Matthew Lynch for 22,000 in 1989. My father Joesph Matthew Lynch married Liesse La brosse Lynch (my mother) and built an addition to the house. This is the second time a family of 8 children lived at this address under the same family blood line.

I have no idea, as the only photo I've ever seen of him was from quite a distance (a group shot taken in the 1930s). I never met him in person, although my mother might have. She's gone, so I can't ask her.

St. Anthony's parish is closed, I think, where he was pastor until his death. You might try to contact the Syracuse archdiocese, to see if anyone is still alive who would know.

I'm sorry not to be much help about this.
Barbara

My father was called John McEvoy, also from Kildare. His family were into horses, I belive training and racing them at the Courgh. His father was called Patrick McEvoy and was born in 1868. However he to my knowledge never left and died in Ireland. So far I have found very little on him or his family although my Grandmothers records were easier to find. My family changed the spelling of the name also. Apparentley it is the old gaelic way as william the Concourer changed the names of all people in Ireland to a spelling with Mc and Scotland to Mac for the magna carta so it was originally spelt with an a. Perhaps they were couisns or similar. My patrick married a Bridget Terrence and they had I belive 12 children. Let me know is this rings any bells Maria

I sent this by private message to Mary Beth Mueller, whose family may be connected to mine. I'll post it here in case it helps you as well:

Of all my searches, the McEvoy line has been the most difficult. After Katie and Charles, I just came up with dead ends. The name Mark McEvoy is uncommon in Ireland, especially for the time period of mid-1800s. If it ever appeared, I’d strongly consider it. But it doesn’t ever appear. At least, in my searches so far!

I had long thought my “monsignor” was named Thomas, which made finding anything about him nearly impossible. Finally I came across a photo of him from the 1920s, and that cleared up the mystery. He was actually quite prominent in Syracuse diocesan matters, and lived well into the 1960s because my mother would visit the rectory where he lived, with cookies.

Katie, however, died when my father was a little boy. I have only two photos of her, both in later years. She was a handsome, but not beautiful, woman. I think she led a hard life, working as a domestic and housekeeper into her 70s. I don’t know when her husband died, but she was raising two children as a single parent quite early.

Her children were Norman (my grandfather) and Augusta (my father’s Aunt Gus). I never knew my grandfather but I did meet Aunt Gus a few times. She lived in Towanda, PA.

That’s about all I know about that paternal line.
Interesting discussion about the McAvoy/McEvoy branch upstate NY. My great grandfather,Thomas McAvoy, born 1821 of Belfast, Ireland, parents in Saltcoats, Ayrshire, Scotland, spelled his name with an Avoy when he signed his citizenship oath in 1864. But the family took to spelling the name MacAvoy around the time he married wife #3, Alice Mulholland, in 1868 in Hoboken, NJ. In the 1970 census, they appear under the name McIllvoy in Greenwich, CN. There are two children, Lizzie, under a year, Alice's child, and John age 14, born in Brooklyn, NY, child of Tom's first marriage to Ann Welsh. Alice's name was spelled Allyce in the 1870 census. I'm guessing it was thought Tom MacAvoy would sound more Scottish, which he was, than Irish. In a "No Irish need apply" world, that may have been wise.

By December 1870 when my grandfather Thomas Francis was born, the family was back in Brooklyn and remained there through the birth of my father Joseph Vincent in 1900. It was not until the mid 1920s that the MacAvoys moved to Queens where my parents married in 1927.

There is a branch of this MacAvoy family in Middlesex County NJ descended from Tom and his first wife Ann Welsh through their Brooklyn born son, John, b. 1856.

Katie McEvoy Crossman was born in 1851, but I am assuming she was born in the US, as I don't have verification for Ireland.

There is an 1870 census record for a Kate McEvoy born in Connecticut, but I don't think it's her. There's no indication she was ever in Connecticut. The other family names don't match either.

She worked as a domestic and boarding house matron in the Cortland, NY area. Interestingly, her son married a Protestant, and raised my father as a Protestant, just a few blocks from Monsignor McEvoy's parish church. My mother would take him cookies occasionally.

I have seen McEvoy and McAvoy spellings quite often and have searched both spellings in Roscommon.

Hi,

To keep this from being confusing Annie's maiden and married name are the same. I hope to figure out if she married a cousin, or second cousin. His name was Luke A. McEvoy. There are times he spells it McAvoy. Luke is the brother of my gg grandfather Charles Patrick McEvoy who married Nellie Emperor in Steuben, NY.

Annie's Indiana death record states:

b. 20 Dec 1845 in Ireland
d. 31 Dec 1913 in Indianapolis, Marion, IN

Annie married Luke on 29 Aug 1865 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo, MI

Luke, Annie and daughter Mary McEvoy are buried together at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. I have a findagrave page for all 3.

It's very likely that your Katie and monsignor Charles are siblings of my Annie but I want to dig around and see if I can find any records.

My McEvoy and Emperor families were in New York around greater Syracuse (as a general area).

I'm trying to fill in some branches on this part of my tree. I don't have a lot of information myself. I can let you know what I find.

Mary Beth

That is a very interesting connection, Mary Beth. Katherine McEvoy was my father's paternal grandmother - She married George A. Crossman, my father's grandfather. Charles (not Thomas) McEvoy was a priest in the Syracuse diocese, who became a monsignor.

I have found no information on Mark or Catherine McEvoy. My father had one mention in a scrapbook that they came from County Roscommon in Ireland, but I've found no trace of either name that would match up.

I have not heard of Anna, but would love to learn more. What information have you found about her?

Barbara (Crossman) Bell

I just got a copy of her death record and learned that her parents were Mark McEvoy and Catherine Byrne. When I checked records and family trees bici had a tree with Kate McEvoy and Charles McEvoy as siblings with these parents names. I know some of my McEvoys lived in New York.

By the way Anna married Luke McEvoy who may have been a cousin, 2nd cousin -- not sure.

I am trying to find some information about my grandmothers birth mother. My grandmother was born in the Newry workhouse on 21/4/1933. Her biological mother was Elizabeth McEvoy (known as Hannah). At the time of my grandmothers birth Elizabeth was living at 39 Dromore Street Rathfriland. We know that Elizabeth was living in Newry in the late 1930's and think that she eventually moved to, Slough, England. She had at least 1 other child - a son. Elizabeth had 2 brothers that we know of, possibly twins - Peter and Patrick.
Any information would be greatly appreciated!

I had a quick look on the LDS database and I couldn't see a Richard McEvoy for Wexford, but then it doesn't have every record on it. Your best bet then is the marriage cert. If I do come across a Richard McEvoy I will let you know!

They have birth records etc. DO you have any ideas for his parents/ siblings or wife's name? I do know there was another McEvoy family around that area, I have been trying to find a connection between mine and them.

Thomas McEvoy was the cousin of my great-grandmother Kate McEvoy Crossman (my father's paternal grandmother). She came from Co. Roscommon, I believe, but I have not been able to find any further details on where or her family, although her father's name might have been Mark.

Thomas was a monsignor in the Syracuse, New York diocese until the mid-1960s. I don't know when he died. I have found one photo of him but have few details.

If you have details on McEvoy family in Ireland that might be related, I would appreciate hearing from you!
Barbara Bell
Syracuse, NY

My grandfather was Patrick Joseph McEvoy. I believe he was from Kildare. He was a blacksmith and he worked in the Currough as a lad. He change the spelling of his last name to McAvoy when he came through Ellis Island because he thought the A seemed more American. He arrived in the USA in the early part of the 20ieth century. He married Mary Quigley who was also from County Kildare though they did not know each other in Ireland. I have some more information stored away. Will post more later. I know that my grandfather was from a large family.

I am only looking for a connection to my roots nothing more. The 1900 census for Chicago, Illinois indicates she was born in 1862.

My great grandmother was Alice (nee MCEVOY) Kerr was born 16 Jan 1858. I have a baptism record as follows: 16 Jan 1858 for Alice of Thos. McEvoy and Anne Mc Donald. The sponsors are James Mc Donald and Mary McCourt. They lived in Dowdallshill.

She emigrated to the US in 1882, which would make her about 24 when she came over to the States. However, the 1900 census indicates that Alice and Thomas were born in 1862. That would make them both 20 when they came over.

Thomas’ parents were Thomas Kerr and Ann Clark. They were from Dundalk.

The 1900 census for Chicago, Illinois indicates he was born in 1862. However, his death certificate indicates he was about 43, when he died on 13 May 1909. This would make his date of birth about 1866. According to my records, from a person I have been working with in the past, she obtained birth records from around that time and found that Thomas was born on 5 Jan 1861 in Sheils Yard, Dundalk, County Louth.

At some point in time, they ended up in Chicago. However, I have no record of where they sailed from or on what ship they emigrated to America. According to the 1900 Chicago Census, they were there in America in 1882.

According to the same census, they had 11 children at the time. However, family history states that there were 13 children. Yet, only six were there with them in Chicago at the time of the census. I still have not figured out the names of the older five or seven children or what happened to them.

I would greatly appreciate knowing if you are a connection to my family or any information you might have on my McEvoy clan.

McEvoy's in Canada

I am searching for any McEvoy's in Canada, who may be descended from Jack(John) McEvoy from Camaross, Co. Wexford, Ireland. He would have been born around 1870-5, and emmigrated to Canada around 1890-5. His parents were Martin and Mary McEvoy, and he had a brother named Michael who remained in Wexford. He had another brother who moved to Wales to work in the coal mines. Any info or help would be great!
