Steve,

This is not my line so I can not help. There are many trees for Jacob McFarland. I noted the first or second entry in this Robert Speer McFarland message board has an email for a gal that has done much research on one of his two families.

I will also note that I have also been told a descendant of Jacob has tested yDNA and this line, see Clan MacFarlane Worldwide website trees, are descendants of the Clan chiefs. FamilyTreeDNA has a MacFarlane project with these kits, there are sales at the end of year so consider validating your connection through yDNA test, 25 or 37 marker test.

Peter

Peter

An update on my prior comments stating a possible relationship. It turns out that there were two Robert McFarlands who both married a Martha Brown, one lived in West Tennessee, Robert Speer McFarland and another lived in Wilson Co, TN. This was determined when census records for both families were found for the same census year in the respective counties. The Wilson Co Robert McFarland moved with family to Fannin Co Texas between 1850 and 1860. This was discovered by another genealogist I work with who has family in Fannin Co, Tx. So there is no connection between Ira McFarland and the West TN Robert Speer McFarland. Robert McFarland, Wilson Co TN, was likely Ira's brother. Their father was most likely William McFarland or a possible son of William, Thomas. I have updated my Ancestry tree to reflect the Thomas possibility. I did this because descendants who have stayed in Wilson Co claim a Thomas McFarland. There are issues with this Thomas, wrong DNA and hence my request for a descendant of Robert S McFarland to test via familytreedna.com. My interest at this point would be a descendant of Fannin Co, Tx Robert and Martha McFarland consider submitting yDNA to further document the relationship plus help complete family history and tree.

Peter

Julia, where did you find John T's date of death? I am still searching for William Anna also. Hopefully, we'll be able to visit Crawford County to look at their records. I don't think there were many McFarlands in MO in the early 1830s. I haven't seen her name listed on any on any of the cemetery records (nor Hershel's, who died in Stoddard Co. also). I understand that a lot of the cemeteries were flooded or vandalized, so we may not find anything.

Carol Davis McDonald

Hello BD...

Take a look at my family tree information:

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/6709803/family

Browse up the chain following Whm Henry McFarland and his paternal ancestors as such; you should hit what I've managed to find about Thomas and Lettie, but I don't have too much more information other than listed, except I suspect that Thomas MAY have come from Washington County, NY... or was born there... or set up roots there after he emigrated. They then moved to Sterling, Cayuga Co., NY.

Lettie (short for Leticia, I believe...) had a surname of McFadden. If you look at census records of Sterling (also seen as Red Creek or Red Cord, Cayuga, NY), you can see that the McFadden's and McFarlands live close together and ingtermingle as such.

My (my wife's that is...) lineage moved westward to oregon in 1890's, with William Henry McFarland marrying Nancy Bell(e) Coffey.

Hope that this has helped. How are you related to Thomas? Perhaps we can help each other? Looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Robert Marx Jr.

Well in some cases an NPE (non-paternity event) might be a possibility, however in the case of a MacGregor using an alias of McFarland, the more simple, and therefore most logical reason for a name change is Proscription. After the 1603 Battle of Glen Fruin, every MacGregor had to take on a new surname by law, many used the surnames of their mother (as did Rob Roy who frequently went by Campbell), others may have used names based on geography; if you were a MacGregor that lived across the Loch from the MacFarlanes, you might have sued that surname. As it turns out some MacFarlanes were fined by the Brits for giving shelter to outlawed MacGregors. I have always suspected that one very likely story might be that if a MacGregor married a MacFarlane, he may have simply moved in with his mother-in-law and so became a MacFarlane.

My own DNA results indicated a Viking and/or Norman background from Ireland. "Generally" McFarlands in Northern Ireland, arrived as part of the Ulster Plantation schemed by Elizabeth 1. Knowing this, I would guess I have a scenario I found on another line of my family. Since the DNA is passed from Father to Son, I would think that either a baby was born out of wedlock to a McFarland girl or a baby was adopted or fostered to a McFarland family and that the Father had an older Irish name.

I did FTDNA and found that I had 5 out of 111 markers with a McFarlane, who it turned out only lives an hour from me, but his ances came thru Philly, not Boston, and then down the Valley of Va in the 1750s, in terms of Time to Most Recent Common Ancestor he and I are sep by at least 10 generations, possibly as many as 12 generations. I have found approx 8 other men with similar markers to mine, but the TMRC for those men is between 400 and 800 years, with Genetic Dist of anywhere from 2 to 6. I have to admit I have had miserable luck with PRONI etc in Ireland, there are few records. But Mary Helen Haines (Clan MacFarland International, the slinter group) has plans to publish a story on Ulster at some point as she asked my permission to use the Ulster records I had sent to her in her story. She also published in their last on line newsletter, her own theory as to the 2 Mcffarlan men in the Muster Rolls (1631) in Tyrone...her theory being that one (John Mcffarlan) was by DNA a MacFarlane, while the other (Dunkan Mcffarlan)was a "Hidden MacGregor" like me.

Yes, I do belong to Family Tree DNA. However unless you're pretty closely linked to another person in it, chances are the connection is too many generations away to make a real connection. Especially when you are dealing with Ireland and the general lack of records. In my case, I realize most "McFarlands" come from Tyrone. For the most part, they still do. With no real records to go on, I'm trying the oral story of them coming from Cork. As with a lot of family stories, it may not be 100% correct, but there may be a story behind the story!

You should consider FTDNA, dont go with Ancestry.com, go FTDNA (and I am not a salesman for FTDNA) if you go with ancestry you have to convert later to FTDNA anyway (Ancestry being a Johnny come lately on the DNA train). I would be willing to be your Cork McFarlands started out in Ulster (Tyrone comes to mind).

The McFarland book by Ellery B Crane (1907) and Bad Reseach

I cannot begin to count how many times I have seen folks throw out on the internet (RootsWeb, Ancestry, etc) statements that Daniel McFarland (died 1738 Worcester) had extra children (Patience, Elizabeth, Samuel...sometimes more)this is totally in error. This false data all started with the 1907 book by Ellery B Crane, when on page 4 he gives the children of Eliner McFarland and Samuel Gray. It appears that nobody actually reads the book itself, but they simply "feed off" the sloppy research of others (who copied it from so-and-so, who in turn copies it from so-and-so...and around and around it goes). If you want to be taken seriously as a researcher, genealogy or not, you have to read the original sources for yourself, don't just copy what so-and-so said on his site...do your homework. In addition, I blame Ancestry.com, they cannot escape their guilt for not demanding that authors do their own research. Ancestry.com needs to stop making it so easy for people to simply "copy" what some other author has already written on Ancestry without any verification of their own. In these cases Ancestry has to accept some of the "guilt" in the spreading of totally false data

I believe the MacGregors changed their last names to avoid death. The Campbell clan beheaded a lot of the Clan MacGregor. So in order for the MacGregors to survive, they moved from Scotland to Ireland and changed their last names.

If you watch these videos, it will explain it a little.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24_rXY7GTCU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImQzmvCv5fQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOaNt3aaa_o

You should join the Clan MacFarlane DNA Project at Family Tree DNA. It doesn't cost you very much to transfer you DNA results over. (http://www.familytreedna.com/public/MacFarlane)

I am a member of that site and have entered my DNA results into Ancestry's DNA project.

I did not have any McFarland matches either. But according to the DNA results, my McFarland line were actually MacGregors, about 8 to 10 generations ago. Hope this helps!
