Thank you! I would think that my McGann family came to US much later than yours (1890 and on)but I am not sure. I was in Ireland last year and my elderly relative's comment was-"Oh the McGann's... they are around--and some of them are police in Chicago". It's cute when said with an Irish accent-but not very helpful. And this is from the granddauther of Brigid! As the Irish say, Ah,well. So I will see if I can find out anything else on my Chicago police McGann relatives!

Hi, In answer to your McGann query. I spent about 4 years trying to link my McGann family to the McGanns of Milford, Chicago and Detroit but ended my search because I only proved that there was likely no connection to the Milford McGanns.

In my search I collected a great deal of information on the McGann of Milford line that you are researching and I would gladly help you in any area that I have information on them. My McGann line started in Westchester County, NY with my gg grandparents James and Mary (Carr) McGann who were famine Irish who came to this country in the early 1850's,

I will not bore you with all the detective work I did to only prove my theory was wrong but i must tell you why I though my family might be connected to the Milford McGanns. The original McGann to settle in MIlford came from Ireland in the very early 19th century and was a long time farmer. His name was Cornelius McGann.

I have a Cornelius McGann who I can connect directly to my family and because this is an unusual name combination I decided to see where the other men lived who had the same name. It turned out that there were only 6 other men in the entire US with that same name combination during the middle part of the 19th century. Four of them resided in MIlford. So you can see I felt confident. I had no other way of connecting my family. because the only person I was sure was related was this man born in 1864 by the name of Cornelius McGann.

He had two wives. One died in childbirth in 1864. Both women were named Bridget. The child born in 1864 ended up in Detroit and became a well known lawyer. His name is Joseph Cornelius McGann. There was also a daughter but I can not remember her married name but I do remember she went to Detroit as well as Joseph Cornelius,

They had another son by the name of Stephen who ended up in Chicago.

There were other McGanns who moved to Milford later in the 19th century and worked in a boot factory.

I am not at home where all of these records are so I can not give you much detail until we return home in April.

If you can think of questions to ask me based on the above information I would be pleased to try and help answer them.

Jack McGann, St. Augustine, FL

For clarification on this entry, the birth registration has what appears to be Shouse Ct.(awful handwriting). Upon closer investigation and many hours it is written as Strouse Ct.(as it sounded). Instead it is Strauss Ct. off of 800 South 6th St.in the third ward. It was certainly an enigma for 2 years, finding the city directoies for the 1880's helped. There is a listing of streets at the beginning of the directory.

Hi Linda
My line comes from Henry McGann (b.1831) and Sarah Ann Hurley (b.1834) who arrived in the U.S. in 1859. One child was Francis (Frank) McGann (b.1867) who married Catherine (Kate) Granley about 1885. Frank's sister Sarah (Sadie)Irene McGann (b.1865) married Jeremiah Lyford Sanborn (b.1837)and had a daughter Eva Adelaide Sanborn (my grandmother)b.1882. If we are related it would probably be from the "Old Country". If any of these names ring a bell with you I have a fair amount of information and woukd be happy to share. Thank you for your comment on the post.
Have a good day
John McGann

Hi,
I'm looking for any information I can find on the family of my great-great grandmother.

Her name was Margaret Ann McGANN, and she was born in New York (probably Rensselaer or Schenectady County) in April 1853, and died in 1917. She had a brother named Thomas McGANN, born abt 1861. (There might have been other siblings, but this is the only one I know of. I don't know their parent's names.)

I don't know for sure where the McGann's are originally from, but Margaret lived with her husband in Hoosick Falls, NY. Her husband's name was Patrick CANTWELL. (1834-1898)

Margaret (McGann) Cantwell and Patrick Cantwell had six children: John, Helen, Anna, Daniel, Patrick, and Kathleen.
Their daughter Helen Cecelia Cantwell is my great-grandmother. She was born abt 1884, and married Israel Joseph BARBER. They had three sons: Joseph, Gerald, & Bertram.

I would appreciate any information anyone might have about anyone mentioned in this line.

Thanks!
Jessica Hodder

I have a copper tray that is signed Peggy McCann. We suspect that it was traded for by one of my husband's ancestors while studying at the Chicago Art Institute as it appears to be made by a very talented amature. Should this wonderful photo find a home in its family, we would like to add the tray as she really appears to be of the same age and attitude of our ancestor and we fear what will happen to it when we are no longer able to store it.

Hey Linda

James McGann - GGG Grandfather was from Roscommon Ireland born 1823 he did have 3 brothers, and sisters now I have to check with family on this there was a Thomas, a Patrick and a John not sure if there an Andrew, I have a hunch that one of James' brothers did go to the US. His parents were Thomas and Elizabeth ( Mulranan) McGann, but Ro may have lots more information than I.

Deb

George,
Go to familysearch.org and scroll down below the search fields to just by the map of the world. Select from the menu on the left for the United States. Scroll down until you get to Maryland. I think the title of the database has the words guardianship and probate in it.
I did some research last year in Allegany County, and I'm pretty sure I came up with some tidbits on your family. I'm up to my eyeballs in other stuff right now, but by mid to late next week I might be able to get back to you on this.
It's always possible, of course, that some related McGanns from County Roscommon ended up in Allegany County together, but McGann is a very common name in County Roscommon, no pun intended!
Linda

Hi all,

Here is my link: My mom is Mary Agnes McGann-Garmer (b1935). Her dad is George DeSales McGann (b26 May 1906). He was born in Frostburg and raised his family in Mt Savage. My great grand parents are James F McGann (bSep 1862) and Mary Ann Durkin (bMay 1868). They lived in Frostburg. My g.g.grandparents are Richard McGann (b1815 in Ireland) and Ann Moore (b1825 in Ireland). Once they immigrated, they lived in Echart Mine and then Frostburg. It would be great to make a connection. AS of yet the cousin I know that are related and I have been unable to determine where Richard McGann originates in Ireland. With other McGann families I notice almost all of them list County Roscommon as origin.

Linda, Can you tell me how to access the probate records on Familysearch?

Thanks,
George

Ro and Deb,
If we find we are really talking about the James McGann who was the son of Patrick M. and Catharine (Mallon) McGann of Vale Summit, I'll be "over the moon," as the Brits say!! This would be fantastic! If my mother and her siblings knew our James (their uncle) was ever married, they never said anything to us. We always understood he was a bachelor, who lived with his mother. (FamilySearch now has the probate records for Allegany County, and Catharine's estate is in there. James inherited the house and the household goods after his mother died.) It wasn't until I ran across a newspaper note that the wife and children of James McGann were visiting with the grandparents, Patrick and Catharine McGann in Vale Summit, that I began to wonder.
According to the Allegany tax records there was more than one Patrick McGann in that neck of the woods, so that's why I am not getting too excited yet!
Thanks,
Linda in So. The family farm ( Mount View ) is still in the family and we always call Catherine Grandma Kate as her youngest daughter Emily ( Auntie Em ) I was very close to when I was a young girl. Catherine's daughter Elizabeth was my GG Grandmother. I would love any information you have if its not a bother. We are having trouble finding information on the McGann's in Ireland. If you would like to send your address to my email I would be grateful its teamcallais@hotmail.com - Regards Deb

(Cleveland?) McGann who was born in Mississippi in 1884. His mother was Eleanor A. Majors who was born in California. From a 1930 census, I was able to find out that Thomas C. McGann's mother was named Norburne (first name?) and was born in Alabama. Information on Thomas C. McGann's father was limited to the same document stating that the father was born in Ireland. I am at a dead end. Please help if you can. What Mom wants, I want!

Thank you so much for your help. The only things I know about Thomas are the things I stated in the previous post. he dies when my grandmother, edith was very young, and she wasn't much for talking about her family so my knowledge is limited. John could very well be his father. I'm assuming the John you refer to is the same one who was married to a Monica Mcgann? The timeline definitly fits for him. The problem is his timeline also fits for being Thomas Mcgann who is the son of Thomas Sr of queens i found listed in a census. Did you see somwhere that Thomas son of John was specifically married to an elizabeth. I havn't seen that and that might indicate that was in fact my Thomas as I have not seen anything to indicate that specifically with other family in question. Thanks again.

He has a step son from his wife's previous marriage named Stanley Smith born about 1902 in New York. He and Elizabeth had a daughter Edith McGann born 9/22/20 in Queens NY. He lived in Far Rockaway Queens until his death sometime between 1920 and 1930. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: McGanns in MD

Brian, I visited your dad on Wednesday. I am your cousin George. I just sent your sister Anna an email. George DeSales and Dorcas Elizabeth Lashley-McGann are my grandparents. My mother is Mary Agnes McGann and she has a sister Lee Anna and two brothers Gregory and Gerard. I have recently started accumulating information about the McGann family in Mt Savage, Frostburg, Barton and Eckhart Mine in Allegany County, Maryland. George DeSales had a brother Joseph. He was Married to a Marie Rupert. Their parents are James F McGann (b.1862) and Mary Ann Durkin (b.1868).Mary was born in England during her families immigration from Ireland to Maryland. James' parents were Richard McGann (b.1815) and Ann Moore (b.1825). Both were immigrants from Ireland. The information comes first hand from an older cousin of my mother that lives in Frostburg.

Your grandmother's sister is one of the nuns in Baltimore and my sister Cecelia is the other nun from Baltimore. She is actually living in Nashville, TN teaching right now.

The link below is to a biography about Patrick T McGann. He is our g.g.uncle. The biography has a lot of information about the McGanns in Frostburg.

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mdallegh/bios/bio-m.htm#mc...

Your Grandmother Dorcas McGann is related to a family that came over with William Penn when he was issued the Pennsylvania land grant in 1682 by the King of England. I have lots more information. Get my email from your sister if you would like to know more.

George
