McGeehee and variant spellings

There is a Y-DNA study at FamilyTree DNA on the McGaughy/McGaha and variant spellings that could be a real help in sorting out these McGeehee, McGeehey, etc. families. Males who carry one of the surnames can participate. Please visit http://www.familytreedna.com/public/McGaughey/ The more people who participate, the more useful the information will be. The administrator can help you decide what test to order and tell you how the test will be of value. Her email is on that link. Thanks!

Dr. Edward Henderson McGehee obituary

Edward Henderson McGehee, M.D., died peacefully at his residence at Cathedral Village’s Bishop White Lodge in Philadelphia on January 29, 2012.

Dr. McGehee was born July 24, 1921 in Mobile, Alabama to Dr. Paul Duncan “Tiny” McGehee and Mary (McDuffie) McGehee. By the age of 12, Edward was driving his father to house calls along the back roads of Alabama. Like his two brothers, Edward followed his father into the medical profession.

He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1942 and from Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1945. He interned in Mobile in the U.S. Navy and the Veterans Administration. On Sept. 10, 1946 in Mobile, he married Carolyn Dunn, a native of Evergreen, Alabama. She predeceased him on January 25, 2005 after 58 years of marriage.

From 1948 to 1950 he was a resident and fellow in pathology at Jefferson. Then followed a residency in medicine and a research fellowship in hematology at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and a McCrae Fellowship at Guy’s Hospital in London.

Edward returned to Philadelphia where he established a private practice in Chestnut Hill. He was also appointed hematologist and physician to the Pennsylvania Hospital. He stepped down in 1966 to become director of medicine at Chestnut Hill Hospital. He also taught at the University of Pennsylvania from 1954 to 1973.

Dr. McGehee’s caring and common-sense medical approach made him extremely popular with his patients. Although the practice became rare among his colleagues, Dr. McGehee continued to make house calls, sometimes by bicycle.

In a 1976 interview, his colleague Dr. Paul Brucker remembered those many house calls. “It was not unusual on a cold, wintry day, to see Ed riding down Germantown Avenue with ear muffs in place, black bag in basket, and maybe an intravenous solution, depending upon the patient’s needs, Dr. Brucker told the Chestnut Hill Local, adding, “What a unique sight that is in this day and age!”

In 1974, he was finally persuaded to return to Jefferson to help form a new department of family medicine. He was named Garber Professor of Family Medicine, associate clinical professor of medicine and associate in the Cardeza Foundation.

He made a strong and immediate impression in the classroom. The Class of ’76 chose him for a portrait they presented to the university. In 1977, he received the university’s Lindback Award for teaching. He also was chosen year after year to be the one to administer the Hippocratic Oath to the graduating classes, an honor he truly enjoyed. He also served as President of the Jefferson University Alumni Association.

He was active in the American College of Physicians for more than four decades, chairing many events and making numerous presentations over the years, including one about the importance of making house calls. In 1987, he was the recipient of the ACP Pennsylvania and West Virginia Laureate Award.

In 1996, the McGehee Loan Fund was established at Jefferson to help third- and fourth-year medical students who plan to practice family or internal medicine.

To Dr. McGehee, taking the time to get to know a patient and to show them effort and compassion was at least as important as staying up to date about the latest medical breakthroughs.

“Caring is an emotional sensation – you can feel it but not really learn it as you learned anatomy or physiology or pharmacology,” he told graduates of the Jefferson class of ’92. “Work at caring. Take a minute to find out a bit about a patient’s work, family or background. What we hear frequently generates admiration and understanding, and builds a bridge,” he advised.

Although he lived most of his life in Philadelphia, his roots ran deep into the South. He was a direct descendant of Abner McGehee, a founder of the city of Montgomery, Alabama. His uncle, John McDuffie, was a longtime Congressman from Alabama who served as Majority Whip under Speaker Sam Rayburn and later served as a Federal Judge.

Dr. McGehee was proud of his Scottish ancestry and was a longtime member of the St. Andrew’s Society of Philadelphia. He was a fine golfer and enjoyed playing many of the world’s best courses, including Old St. Andrew’s. He was a longtime member of the Philadelphia Cricket Club, the Philadelphia Club, and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

Besides his wife Carolyn, he was predeceased by a son, James Laird McGehee. He was also predeceased by his two brothers, Dr. Paul D. McGehee, Jr. and Dr. John McDuffie McGehee.

He is survived by his son Edward H. McGehee, Jr. and wife Beverly Stockstill of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and by his daughters, Virginia McDuffie McGehee and husband James O’Neill Condon of Colchester, Vermont and Sarah Shields McGehee and husband John Clifford Komisin of Charlotte, North Carolina.

He is also survived by five grandchildren, one nieceand five nephews.

Dr. McGehee’s legacy will be the wisdom he dispensed while training multiple generations of physicians. “Patients will not really understand the certificates on your walls beyond your Jefferson diploma or your state license,” he told the Jefferson Class of ’92. “Mostly they approach the trivia of wall décor appropriately. What they will know with remarkable accuracy is whether you care.”

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made either to the Special Music Fund at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 22 East Chestnut Hill Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19118, or to the McGehee Loan Fund, c/o The Jefferson Foundation, 925 Chestnut St., Suite 110, Philadelphia, PA 19107.
Just looking at some of the counties with McG folks in early days of north Texas. Found a probate for a John McGee who died in 1866, citizen of Montague Co., TX whose property was 'run off' or destroyed by Indians there in 1866. A claim was made for federal payment in 1890s with $27,000 claimed and $11,000 paid by 1900; lawyer Hagler had charge of the probate for John McGee's heirs, but my copies of the probate pages do not list any heirs or who received the payment.... There was nothing in the state level of Indian claim books about John McGee 'losing' so much property, so who claims this John McGee?

It would be helpful if you can recall what pension Judith McGehee applied for and received. If I knew that it could be another lead to follow up as her children should be named on pension records.

Thanks again,
Kay

Go to mailing lists rootsweb. Then they will ask you to sign in . Or you can just search the mailing lists for all the years. Janice will see these board posts and contact you .

Yes I have my Abrahams marriage licence and volumes more of documents. Only been at this 52 years now. LOL. Obediah was Mary Hawkins brother as was Laban Hawkins. Her parents were Joseph Hawkins of Amelia and his wife Sarah Marchbanks descendant of the Bruce in Scotland. Joseph died and mother Sarah remarried and moved to Nottoway. I could go on forever .

Pat

Thanks, I have done research on this family for a few years and not been able to find the needed documents to prove what I want to prove. However I do have documentation and book pages on several of the other McGehee. I am sure you have this..but in case not, your Abrahm marriage bond 24 Par 1799 to Polly Hawkins with surety by Obadiah Hawkins...FHL film number 33254 I have a copy of a certified record of a Richard Pettipoole son of grandson of Armstead Pettipool. that does show Abraham and Judith's marriage as well as it is also on this film. Lots of documents just not the ones I need :))

Question...you said Abraham's wife Judith Pennick went to live with dauther Nancy where Judith received a pension? Was Abraham in the war of 1812 and Judith P McGehee received a pension? If so do you know where he served?

She had a lot of info and may have the copy of the bible. Janice Arnall on the mailing list can give you more info on her as I have forgotten it now.

It should be on the McGehee mailing list for rootsweb. By the way your James P is James Penick McGehee. And he is indeed the son of James Forest .

Thank you for your reply. I have been told that you may have a copy of the bible record of James Forest McGehee. If that is true, I very much would like to know where the bible record is kept and if you have a copy of the original. You can contact me at kay_321@yahoo.com

My McGehee relationship is that I descend from James Forest his son Joseph P McGehee, his son James R McGehee and his daughter Ardie McGehee my great grandmother.

Thank you,
Kay

The application you posted is for the most part correct on this line of McGehee. The only exception being that now DNA has proven McGehee are NOT McGregor. And I can add some other facts to this line. Lafayette Armisted Petti-Poole had gone with his father in law to Limestone Co but then moved to Haywood Co TN where his wife died. His brother in law Abraham Forrest McGehee also moved to Haywood Co ,TN. Lafayette called Laffe then remarried and moved to KY which is where he died. The name Petti-Poole has been much corrupted to forms such as P.Poole or just Poole at later dates.

On Abraham who married Judith Penick dau of William Penick of Pr Ed Co ,VA. Abraham and Judith married in Prince Edward in 1809 and left for KY by 1811 after which they moved to Wilson Co TN and where they lived until moving to Limestone Co 1819.Their son Joseph Penick McGehee remained in Wilson Co TN.. The children listed for Abraham and Judith are correct i.e. Abraham Forest and his brother James Forest and others.Nancy their daughter was living in Madison Co Ala and after her father died , Judith her mother came to live with her. Judith recieved a pension there for Abrahams service.

The earlier James listed as born 1767 by Leon is in fact the brother of Abrahanm who married Judith Penick. That earlier James removed to Nottoway Co ,VA and died there.

I descend from Abraham's cousin also Abraham b 1775 son of Jacob McGehee of Cumberland Co VA d 1794 and my Abraham later moved to Pr Ed Co ,VA. Jacob was the son of Abraham of Goochland d 1746.This Abraham of Goochland who died in 1746 is uncle of William McGehee the father of your Abraham who married Judith.

My Abraham b 1775 ( son of Jacob son of Abraham d 1746 )married Mary Hawkins in Pr Ed Co 1799 and removed to Nottaway by 1819 and then in 1831 to Wilson Co TN. He died there in 1840 and his children moved to Weakley Co TN.

The brothers William, Jacob, Edward and the eldest Abraham are all sons of Thomas of Kent Co ,VA. No parentage has been found yet for Thomas listed as the Immigrant. However it is thought he may be the son of William an Immigrant in 1653.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. I am trying to prove by documentation that James Forrest McGehee is the son of Abraham. I have had some problems with this. First I have not found a document that has his (James) full name. I can only find him as James F. McGehee. I have only found Abraham F McGehee son of Abraham in Limestone, AL in 1830. There is supposed to be a family bible...which from what I see..must exist. I can not find poof that Abraham Sr was in Limestone, AL where it is said he died.

Kay

Dear Kay,

My wife is a McGehee, and I have James Forrest McGehee as a son of Abraham McGehee. What makes me think this is accurate is that Abraham's mother's maiden name was Forrest. Here's a link to an application for the U.S. Sons of the Revolution filed in the mid 1960's by a Charles Bowers that may be of interest to you:
http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=2204&pa...

Good luck!

Jim Condon

Thanks for your reply. I have the same information and I am seeking sources to prove it. I was in Salt Lake City last month and did not locate anything. I am a descendant of Joseph Powell McGehee. What I can find sources on confirms this line in part. There is a bible record of James Forrest McGehee but all that can be found so far is a bible record that is transcribed with no reference as to where the original can be found. I can prove that Jemima had a son who's name was William Pennick McGehee. I just need to prove that James Forrest McGehee was a son of Abraham. I believe it but so far can not prove it.

Sampson McGhee/McGehee/ Tennessee

I have been searching for Sampson McGehee''s parents for some time and have been unsuccessful. It appears that samson had a brother, Thomas, also a farmer in Montgomery co, Tennessee. This is what I know about him. One of my great aunts told me that Sampson was buried in the McGee cemetery in Clarksville along with his brother Thomas. I had a person independently searching who also told me he had a brother--Thomas. There is a Thomas listed in the cemetery but no Sampson. Thomas---Born Jan 1802 Died July 1875. Married Matilda Johnson (Born 1803 in S.C. died 1881 Montgomery Co). They had 3 children: Fredonia (1826-1862), Benjamin (1827--1906) and Louisiana (1838--1839) ? Any additional info is greatly appreciated.
Tim McGhee
His WWI draft registration lists him as Bernard Carlyle Mcehee, age 21, born 20 December 1896, (looks like) Harlensir, VA, living in what looks like Harlensville, Goochland Co., VA, farmer, supports father, mother, sister and brother. Form dated June 22, 1918

Listed in 1900 census, Louisa, VA as a son. Ancestry has census record misspelled as Carlile Mcgehu. If you look at 1920 it's obvious the 1900 is screwed up. The mother can't be 52 in 1900 and 57 in 1920 and R D age 5, then Russell W age 17 in 1920.
A M, age 34 father
R D, age 52 mother
A N, age 10 son
N E, age 6 dau
R D, age 5 son
Carlile, age 4 son
G M, age 1 dau

1920 Census shows
Rosa L, age 57 mother
Robert L, age 24
Bernard C, age 23
Lizabeth A, age 21
Gladys M, age 19
Russell W, age 17
