Hi, Not sure about your John. Some McGhie's are found in Ireland and owned quite a bit of property in Ballybofey and Dooish Ireland. There is one McGhie buried in the catholic cemetary and quite a few in the church of Ireland. I don't know if your family has been traced there or not. (Most McGhie/Mcgee/Magee's were Presbyterian -sp)
I will watch for your John....
Scarlet

Hi Nadine -

While not all of the details match information about my dad, Arnold McGhie (aka Rick or Sonny), it is pretty close. He was out in LA around those years. He wasn't born in Jamaica however my grandparents were and he was born within a few years of them coming to the USA. We, along with my dad's family, lived and grew up in NJ.

Do you have any other information on him? A photo?

William McGhie

I am searching for info on my gggfather William McGhie, born March 16, 1825 in Dublin Ireland. He came to the US in the 1840's, married Adeline Pendleton Lockhart of Winchester TN. They had 2 sons, Joseph and Arthur and eventually settled in Jefferson Co AR about 1861. Arthur(Archie) was the father of Jennie McGhie Smith (my grandmother).William was an artist by profession in the carriage painting and sign writing business and also dabbled in theatrical productions. William drowned in 1882. Is anyone connected with this line? Would like to exchange info. Thanks

Fionna,
This may be of some help. My great grandmother was Agnes Spourt. She was apparently born in Halbeth (Fifeshire) Scotland and had nine siblings. Seven of them were Christina, Janet, George, David, Jasper,Alice, and Catherine. Your Christina could be his one or possibly the daughter of one of her siblings? Agnes's parents were David Spourt and Margaret Blakely. Margaret had two siblings, George and Alice. Margaret is supposedly buried in Black Friars cemetery in Edinburgh. I have very little information on this family line other than what I've shared with you and would like to obtain more. If you discover a connection with your Christina, please let me know.
Thanks,
Bill Dodds

Hi Glen, I am a McGhee in Scotland, My gggreat grandfather Hugh McGhie came to Wigtownshire, in Galloway from Ireland. I do not know the exact date. He married Agnes Fulton in Kirkcolm Wigtownshire in 1809.....
What I do know of my McGhies McGhees are they were not of Ireland orginally but were Scots who went over to Ireland during the Ulster plantation times or before and some came back in later generations to Wigtownshire.......
I have my Hugh Mcghie's father James McGhie and his mother Ann Jackson. I would place my Hugh McGhie as being born near the time of your McGhie,,,,,
I have done a wee bit of research trying to find out just where in Ireland Hugh McGhie and Agnes Fulton came from and have come to the conclusion that if they were in the Ulster Plantation they would have hailed from Parish of Kikteevoug near the town of Stranorlar...This fits with your McGhie's...I aslo traced the Fultons in the Plantation just a few miles away from Stranolar over the county border. North Tyrone, Urney and Ardstraw....I think if we work at this we may find a connection....
My ggreat grandfather moved from Wigtownshire to Glasgow in the late 1800s probably 1890 odds....
If you are interested I could sent you lots of info on my McGhies /Mcghees from Hugh McGhee and Agnes Fulron 1809 untill present day.......Gene

Hi Glen, I am interested in you information on the McGhie/ McGhee Magee families of Ireland....
I am seeking family round about the same time and place......
My grandfather 4xtimes removed died in Scotland but was born Ireland circa 1789...
His father's name was James McGhie (whatever varient) I am sure that he must have had a brother named James,if I am correct probably a year or so older....
I have his (great grandfather's) parents listed as James Mcghie and Ann Jackson....He may not have been the eldest boy in his family (but naming patterns are not written in Stone) I beleive Hugh McGhie ... his father is James McGhee may have a brother named James McGhie
This seems to fit with your research.....
Please contact me offlist for a further exchange of information which may be to our mutual benefit.....
Yours Gene Mcghee

McGhie Mystery

I am searching for the parents and/or family of my GGGrandmother Charity Jane Elizabeth Hatfield. She was born November 16, 1850 possibly in Indiana. She married William Alfred Robinson on January 6, 1870 in Vigo County, Indiana. She died June 30, 1929 in Washington Township, Hancock County, Indiana and is buried in Mendon Cemetery Ingalls, Hancock County, Indiana. The first documentation I have that might be her is a listing in the 1860 Hamilton County, Indiana Census as Jane Hatfield age 10 living with the Edmond Maghee family. We don't know who her parents were or why she would be living with the Maghee family, so far I have found no connection between the Hatfield's and these Maghee's. Edmond is listed as insane on the 1870 census.

Marriage: Peter McGhie & Rose Ella Millet (1902)

Married.
On Wednesday evening, Oct. 1st, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Millet, of Sumner, occurred the marriage of their eldest daughter, Rose Ella, to Mr. Peter McGhie, of Washington. About forty persons, relatives and friends, witnessed the ceremony, which was performed by Rev. H. O. Harbaugh, of Racine.

The house was decorated with autumn leaves, smilax and carnations, while the wedding group stood under an arch of clematis and smilax. The bride was attired in a dainty dress of Paris mull, and carried white roses. She was attended by her sister, Miss Roby Millet, who also wore white and carried pink roses. The groom wore the regulation black, and was accompanied by his brother, Mr. Robert McGhie.

Dainty refreshments were served immediately after the ceremony. The young couple received many useful and beautiful presents. Among those particularly deserving mention was a check for $500 from the father and mother of the bride, an elegant and very complete set of china dishes from Dr. and Mrs. M. C. Millet of Rochester, and a beautiful dining table from the father and mother of the groom.

Mr. and Mrs. McGhie left Thursday evening for Washington, D. C., for a few days absence, followed by the good wishes of a host of friends. They will be at home to their friends after their return at Summit Farm, Sumner, Fillmore county [Minnesota].

Unidentified Minnesota newspaper
9 October 1902

James McGhie (b. 1831 in Scotland) came to Canada.
He married Martha Holmes (English, but born in Ontario),
possibly married in 1865,
and they lived in the Normanby Twp., Grey Co. Area.

At least two of their sons went out west, William settling near Rocanville, SK, and Thomas living in Oak Lake, MB.

Their children were:
Rachel Ann (McGhie) Souster (b. 1866)
Thomas James McGhie (b. Oct 2, 1868)
William Harvey (b. May 1871 - d. Sep 30, 1945 Rocanville, Sask, Can)
John Joseph McGhie (b. Aug 1, 1875)
Reba (McGhie) Gooderham (b. ?)

Martha Holmes' parents:
Family legend has it that a Lady Calverley (in England) was betrothed, but not happy. She fell in love with the groomsman/coachman and they went to Canada. Their names may have been William Holmes and Rachel Calverley, but I have not been able to find out yet.

Please contact me if you know of these people, thanks!

McGhie's in the 1800's

Hi All

I am looking to extend my knowledge of my family tree a little further and I am hoping someone out there can help me…??

So far I am stuck at the following point:

Thomas Ward McGhie (b. approx. 1890)
m. Margaret Birrell Liddell (b. approx. 1890)
(married on 16th May 1911 in Carmyle, Glasgow, Scotland)

I know Thomas’ mother and father were:

f. George McGhie, Coalminer
m. Janet Ward

But this is all I know. Looking at the birth of Thomas McGhie, I would envisage that George McGhie and Janet Ward were born at least 20 years before (1870) but not more than 45 (1845) – so a rather large age bracket. The location will most likely be Scotland, but not necessarily.

Any help will be much appreciated

Regards

Stephen McGhie
Hello Richard!!
my name is Hellen, I have been searching the web for the last couple of days, trying to look for information about the McGhie family name! I happened to chance upon your email in an English websight. It aroused my interest because my grandfather originated from Hamilton. His name was John Mcghie.I belive he was born around 1920s I know he had a brother think his name was william or George?? sorry to be so vauge.(he had other brothers and sisters of whom I know nothing) this brother was a handsom devil with a fondness for the bottle!! (so I am told) and he emigrated to Canada or America.
One of my Granddaddys nick names was "The Black Prince" he was the life and soul of the party, he died well before I was born, even in to my teens old people would stop me on the street and ask me if I was related to Johnny Mcghie? then proceed to tell me how wonderful he was.
He was in the Seaforth Highlanders, and the Desert Rats in world war 2. He died in the coal mines in Nottinghamshire, of a hart attack on his side in an 50inch seam full of water. At 39 years of age.
I belive his mothers name was mary or margeret.
Its not much to go on! but can you help?

kind thoughts and nice surprises
Hellen McGhie

I think the adoption information submitted by Paulette McGhie is incorrect. I have John and William as natural children of Peter McGhie and his first wife, Henrietta Gibson. It was my great grandfater William McGhie (Jr.) born 8 Jan 1830 in Dailly, Ayr, Scotland and christened in Kirkoswald, Ayr, Scotland 5 Feb 1830. The Parochial Register for Kirkoswald shows John Kellie as his biological father and Elizabeth Collins as his mother. He was adopted by William McGhie (Sr.) when he married Elizabeth Collins 29 Jul 1831 in Kirkoswald. John and William (Sr.) were therefore McGhies, not Kellies.

I don't have an Isabella McGhie, but then my information on our McGhie line is rather sparse. I would say that if there were families of McGhie's in the same area in Ontario in the 1871 Census, they could very likely be related.

I haven't worked on the McGhie line for a while, needed a rest from it, but I would be happy to share what I have. My email address is mlee2001@gci.net.

Hope to hear from you,
Myrna

McGhie/Spowart

I am interested in the Mc Ghie/Spowart family connection. I have a Christina Spowart McGee Farquhar born in Edinburgh in 1873, and a Christina Spourt McGhie Farquhar born in Edinburgh in 1894. I believe this line may have come from the Wilson family. I have a John Wilson who was married in 1827 in Edinburgh whose father may have been Andrew Wilson, who was married to a Christina Spowart. I haven't found as yet where the name Mc Gee/McGhie arrises but suspect it came throught the Spowart/Spourt line. Any links to these lines?
Regards Fionna

Hello: My Husbands' mother is Isabella Mcghie. Her father was Thomas James McGhie and his father was James McGhie born in 1831. He married Martha Holmes and is also on the 1871 Canadian census not too far from Samuel. We always wondered if they may be related. Thanks for any help have a lot of info about that side of the family. I have surfed through your site somewhere I think. and thought we may be descended from the same family.

Rita,I'm interested in your gg grandmother as my gg grandmother was SARAH COLE from that area and she had a sister Margaret. Her 1st child (born 1847) was named Sarah Margaret and I see that your Margaret also named one of her daughters the same. Our Sarah met our naughty gg grandfather, JAMES DUNLOP, and presumably she became pregnant. He married her but they were sent out here to New Zealand with Valet and maid ,to settle about 1846.Here they had a family of 13 !!!
Sarah's father was reputedly the overseer on James's uncles' estate .Look foreward to your reply ,.......Barbara Mansfield

From the 1900 Census, Owen Redman's DOB is Mar 1866. Mary J,'s DOB Nov 1876, Mabel's DOB Apr 1899. Lists Mary J's Father born in Virginia, Mother in Ohio.

The 1880 Census shows Albert McGhie born in Va, also both mother & father. Olive born in Va, her father in Va, her mother in Oh.

Is Charles Redman from Owen Redman's line? I can document the Redman's to John Redman Sr., father to Owen, John Jr, and 7 more brothers & sisters. After that, I believe John Sr's father was James Redman, one of the earliest settler's of Scioto Township, who came from Virginia between 1800 & 1810(?) with his wife, Eve (also listed as Eva) Corder Redman. The 1820, 1830, & 1840 census did not list individuals, only head of household. The ages fit. But unless I can find documents listing the children of James Redman, I cannot be 100% certain I have it correct. Where are you located? My search is limited to the internet since I live in Hawaii. There are so many records I'd like to search in Pickaway County that will fill the gaps.

You can email me, if you like, at redmanr001@hawaii.rr.com for whatever info I have. Glad to share.

Thank you Rosemarie for the information. Charles Redman is my Mother in law's father. If you need information on that line forward, I'll be happy to share. Also, do you know if the Redman's and/or Mcghie's were raised in Pickaway Co. or when they moved there from where? Do you have Owen Redman's date of birth or date of death? or Mary Jane Mcghie's? Thank you again. Peggy

I am researching the Redman line in Pickaway Cp., OH. In my research, I found Albert McGhie (age 58) married to what looks like "Olive" (age 27). Found in 1880 Census, Pickaway Co, Scioto Township, ED#227, visit 196, page 532. Had 3 children, Charles, Jesse & Mary J.

Owen Redman is brother to John Redman, my husband's ggg-grandfather.

Hope this helps. Aloha.
