Muirkirk, Ayr - James McGill-Jean Glover Marriage 31 May 1816

I have traced my Grandfather Thomas Milligan back to Scotland. His grandfather, John Milligan married Jean/Jane McGill (b. 4 May 1817) in April 1848 in Murikirk, Ayr. Her parents were James McGill and Jean Glover in Muirkirk, Ayr. There are at least four James McGills (listed below) and three Jean Glovers who were born in Ayrshire that could have formed this marriage. Has anyone traced their family and ties into mine? Other descendants from Scotland include James Barr, Jean Moffat, Alice Durno Barr, Thomas Rodger Milligan, James Barr Milligan, and George A. Milligan
Candidates: (1)James McGill b. abt 1791 in Muirkirk, Ayr
(2)James McGill christ 17 May 1795 of Muirkirk, Ayr -Father Cunningham, Mother Jean Park
(3)James McGill Christ 2 Jun 1804 of Ayr, Ayr - Father William, Mother Jean Andrew
(4) James McGill Christ 10 May 1804 of Girvan, Ayr, -Father William, Mother Jean Ross.

Christopher married Rebekah Stilley in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
McGill, Gill, Gile, McGile from Butler Co., PA

I have found out from the 1850 census of East Connoquenessing Twp., Butler Co., PA that a Margaret Gile (age 23) was living with Robert Aiken (age 60) and his wife Elizabeth (age 58). Mr. and Mrs. Aiken were her foster parents, and in 1857 Margaret married Samuel McCracken. A story passed down in our family states that Margaret's parents were killed in a fire when she was young, and that the Aiken family raised her and her siblings. I also found that there was a James McGile living nearby in 1850, and also several people named McGill and Gill. In 1860 in Connoquenessing Twp., Margaret and Samuel McCracken had a 2-year-old son named Robert Aiken McCracken, named in honor of Mr. Aiken. Elizabeth Aiken was living with them, but not Mr. Aiken (apparently died between 1850 - 1860).

Does anyone know if the Gile, Gill, McGill and McGile families really could be one and the same? Are these just various preferred spellings of the same surname?? I would like to know who Margaret's birth parents were. I now know from her death record that she was born 15 May 1826 in Harrisville, Mercer Twp., Butler Co., PA. Anyone researching these families in Butler Co., PA (or nearby counties)?

Bell (William?) McGill of Miss. and TX, married to Gertrude Roper

My great-grandfather Bell McGill b. 1890, Mississippi was married to Gertrude Roper; they had several children, and resided in Palestine, Texas: mary catherine b.1920, William Aubry b.1922, Ralph marshall (my grandfather) b.1923, Douglass b.1926, lula jean b.1928, and Jerry Ray b.1932, though I can't be sure all of these children came from this union, it could be possible. Ralph Marshall and the younger children are most likely all gertrude's own as they are named same as her brothers and sisters are. I just got cleared up on the Gertrude mystery, but I am at a dead end locating resources for a Bell McGill b.1890, Miss. If anyone has any info to lend it would be greatly appreciated. You can also email me at missysue88@hotmail.com. Thanks a bunch! -Melissa McGill
McGill Family

Hello!
I am researching my McGill family roots and would appreciate any info one might have regarding the following McGill line:
* George Bruce McGill b. 1896 or 98 in Tenn., or
* John McGill (George's father) b. 1848 in Tenn., or
* Wade H. McGill ( John's father) b. 1824 in South Carolina
Wade's mother & father were from S.C. as well. In 1880 Wade, son John and other family members of Wade's household were living in Blount County Tenn. Wade and John are both listed as "widowers" at that time. I'm having a lot of trouble learning more about them, or the S.C. link! The McGill line came out of either Blount or Sevier Counties. Any and all info is appreciated These McGills are closely related to the:
Thomas Alex Sellers family (Jefferson County TN) , William Russell family, Thomas Brogdon (den?) family, James Taylor family, Margaret Ward family, and Mary Cox families. Thank you in advance.
Best Regards, Roy Wade McGill Jr.11-25-04

McGlLL, TROY A. - Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient WW II

McGlLL, TROY A.

Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Army, Troop G, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. Place and date: Los Negros Islands, Admiralty Group, 4 March 1944. Entered service at: Ada, Okla. Birth: Knoxville, Tenn. G.O. No.: 74, 11 September 1944. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action with the enemy at Los Negros Island, Admiralty Group, on 4 March 1944. In the early morning hours Sgt. McGill, with a squad of 8 men, occupied a revetment which bore the brunt of a furious attack by approximately 200 drinkcrazed enemy troops. Although covered by crossfire from machineguns on the right and left flank he could receive no support from the remainder of our troops stationed at his rear. All members of the squad were killed or wounded except Sgt. McGill and another man, whom he ordered to return to the next revetment. Courageously resolved to hold his position at all cost, he fired his weapon until it ceased to function. Then, with the enemy only 5 yards away, he charged from his foxhole in the face of certain death and clubbed the enemy with his rifle in handtohand combat until he was killed. At dawn 105 enemy dead were found around his position. Sgt. McGill's intrepid stand was an inspiration to his comrades and a decisive factor in the defeat of a fanatical enemy.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Knoxville, Tennessee
Cemetery: Knoxville National Cemetery

Born: 1914 Knoxville, TN

Died: 1944 Killed in Action -- Awarded Posthumously.

Source, additional information and cemetery monument photo:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_go/mcgil...

Note: This is not my ancestry.
Looking for Archibald McGill who, in 1740, was granted 500 acres of land at Bladen in North Carolina. He may have had a James McGill and a John McGill from Lanark in Scotland stay with him about 1760. They were probably both in their 'teens' at the time. James McGill was the founder of the McGill University in Canada.

Mysterious Walter S. McGill

I am searching for a Walter S. McGill who was the son of Susan Horner of Johnstown, Cambria County, PA. Walter S. McGill is listed as the son of Susan Horner in her will. She was born circa 1807 and died Feb. 18, 1881. I know that Walter S. McGill had a sister Mary Kennedy (born circa 1837, died 1880-1889) wife of Charles Zimmerman, Jr. ; a brother Daniel W. Goughnour (born circa 1824, died 1870-1880); and a sister Jane, wife of Levi Holland. Mary, Daniel and Jane all lived in Cambria County. Does anyone have a Walter S. McGill in their family history? Does anyone know who Walter's father was? I don't know if Walter S. McGill's mother was married three times or what. Can anyone help?

McGILL Mystery AL / TX

I am seeking info on the ancestry / origins / family of my grt-grandmother, Minnie Ida McGill. The 1880 Talladega Co. Alabama census lists E. McGill, widow, as head of household with her children William, 19, Fannie, 10, and Ida, 5. E (Elizabeth) is shown to be 40 years of age, born in AL and employed as a cook. The children are listed as born in Texas and their father is shown to have been born in Texas. (Transcribed census records from FamilySearch.org)

It is known that Minnie Ida was deaf and was enrolled at the Alabama School for the Deaf, Talladega, beginning March 27, 1883. Their records verify that the mother's name is Elizabeth and give the father's name as Thomas. Since Elizabeth is a cook, is it possible that she could have been a cook at the School?

The mystery - the AL / Texas connection. Did Elizabeth marry a Texas boy serving in the Confederate Army during the War, move to Texas with him after, and return to Alabama to be near family after his death? Did she move to Texas, meet and marry Thomas McGill, then return to AL after his death?

The mystery deepens. Census records for Navarro Co. Texas, 1900, show Elizabeth living with William MURPHY instead of McGILL. The ages are about right so this should be her son William. Could she have had a first marriage before Thomas and then moved to Texas? Could her first husband, William's father have been killed in the War?

I have no information on Thomas McGill and would like very much to find anything that will help me connect this part of my family tree. I have nothing further on Elizabeth or her lineage and would appreciate anything anyone could do to help me with my search.

Looking for information on John McGill who married Jean McKean from Colmonnel on 19th April 1739 in Dailly Ayrshire Scotland.

I suspect they were the parents of my ancestor David McGill (born 6th May 1744), his older sister Jean McGill (born 30th May 1742) and his younger brother Patrick McGill (born 8th February 1747).

The relevant Parish Records for Dailly do not give the mother’s name - but all 3 records show the father as John McGill from “Mains of Kilkerran”.

Any information to help in my quest would be much appreciated.

Kind regards Alastair McGill

McGill, David - Australia to Canada (Montreal)

I am searching for a McGill family who is of Scottish decent but moved from Australia to Montreal, Quebec (I am guessing in the late 1890's)

David was born 1870 and his wife (Margaret) was born 1877. David's mother (Jane) was living with them at the time of the 1911 census in Montreal (she was born in 1835 and was a widow at the time)

I am interested in this family because they had a servant living with them at the time by the name of Elizabeth Cutler (this was my grgrandmother) and I would be thrilled to find any information out about the McGill family and the kind of family my grgrandmother worked for

Much appreciated

Judy
BC Canada

McGill - Ferris - Tammany in NYC 1865 - 1880

Hello,

I'm hoping someone will recognize this family, as they are very hard to find.

Jane (maiden name unknown) was married to a man with the last name McGILL. He died and left her widowed before 1868.
The couple already had at least two children -
James McGill born about 1856 and
Ellen McGill who had evidently married a man with the last name of FERRIS before 1884.

The widow Jane McGill married the widowed Edward Tammany (he was widowed in 1862) before 1868 when a son Edward Tammany was born to them in NYC.

The 2nd husband, Edward Tammany died in 1880 and then Jane died in 1884.
I have come to a dead end looking for who his dad was.
I do have a mother's first name of Eliza in the 1850's census listing Eliza as head of household with the following children:
Francis b. 1838 in Ohio
Benjamin b. 1840 in Ohio
Mary b. 1842 in Ohio
Hiram b. 1844 in Ohio
William b. 1845 in Iowa
Isaac b. 1848 in Iowa
Benjamin and William fought in the Civil War. Benjamin was killed serving with the 7th Iowa Volunteers.
Francis married Martha McDaniel and stayed in Iowa.
Isaac married Madama Kuder and remained in Iowa.
William married 1. Susan Louisa Thompson 2nd. Margaret Charles. They had two sons Chester and William (my g grandfather).
William married a Garnet Pritchard and moved to California.
Their son Cecil (my great uncle) is the wrestler "flash" or Irish Pat McGill of the 1920's and 1930's. Cecil's brother John is my grandfather.
Can anyone identify Eliza's husband? Does anyone have Eliza's maiden name? I believe her husband was born in Ohio as well as Eliza being born in Ohio.
