Looking for Canadian McGINN Families = Brick Wall

Hello McGinns

I am still looking for a family to tie to my gr. grand father John McGinn born in Upper Canada 1830.
Upper Canada was so named in 1791, became Canada West in 1841 and Ontario in 1867.
Nobody in the family knew or could remember his parents.
There was possibly a Pennsylvania McGinn connection.

Earliest I have written record of John, a shoe maker by trade, was in Escott Tp, Leeds Grenville County in 1849.
(Eastern Ontario bordering the St Lawrence River.)

Countys in Ontario where he might have been born would extend from Lennox Addington through Frontenac, Leeds Grenville, Lanark, Carleton and Stormont Dundas and Glengarry.
While I am hoping a DNA match, ( McQueen DNA Project, Scott Kendell) might show me some patterns of research, I am looking for a McGinn family who might have had a "lost" son John born around 1830 in Canada ?
Our roots are supposed to be Ulster and the family was originally Roman Catholic with one? family member educated for the priesthood. This is all legend and could be fiction.
John himself may have been born into a Roman Catholic family, choosing to marry outside his church?
I have record of him as a dedicated Methodist at least after his marriage in 1854.
The 1901 census gives his birthdate as August 24th, 1830. I am not sure I trust census birthdates!

Again in the 1901 census, John McGinn (1830-1905)was mourning the loss of his wife Jane Cooke (1836-1900) and living with him was a sister Mary Ann Morris (1826-1905).
So I need a family with Mary Ann slightly older than John McGinn, siblings.
Rob McGinn

All I know of her is that she became a nun, Sister Mary of Nazareth and moved to Louisiana. I don't know which (Roman Catholic) order she joined. I don't know if she joined before or after moving to the USA.

Can anyone suggest an organisation in Lousiana I might contact for more information?

Regards etc.

Descendants of William John McGinn & Mary McGrath

We have only recently discovered our grandfather had 9 siblings (we were told of only 1). Have been able to fill in a lot of blanks through various sites...some of William and Mary's children (our grandfather's parents) remained in Liverpool, England - others ventured across to USA.

William (from Belfast Ireland born c. 1858) and Mary (from Dundalk, Louth Ireland b c. 1862) married 7 Sept. 1882 in Liverpool.

Their children:
Mary Ann (Annie) McGinn (b: 1894 Liverpool) married Richard Lovelady 27 July, 1908. We do know that Annie died on 5th April at the Rodney Nursing Home (was/is Liverpool UK area)as there was a cutting in Granpa's papers, but it didn't state the year.
Annie & Richard had son Bernard Robert b:1914 d: 1997.
Other children? Did Bernard marry? GrandChildren?

Eleanor (Nellie) McGinn b: 12 Feb 1886 Liverpool. Married? Children?

Mary McGinn (b: 1888 Liverpool) married Joseph Bennett in 1913.
Children: Terence 1914 - Monica 1916 - Bernardettte 1924. Who did they marry? Children?

The other children of William & Mary were:
John b 1890 (lived in New York)
Marriage and children?
Nora Margaret who married James MADDEN (lived New York)- son Philip born NY in 1926. Other children?
Philip's marriage and children?
William James who married Anna (surname unknown). They lived in Boston
daughter Mary born Boston 1917
son John born Boston 1926
Marriage and children?
Gertrude Gladys b 10 June 1895 (probably resided New York)
Marriage and children?
Austin who married Eleanor Thompson (lived New York)
son Vincent born Brooklyn NY 1931 - Died 1995
Other children? Vincent's marriage and children?
Agatha Madeline b: 1901 (travelled frequently to US and lived in NY & Boston)
Marriage and children?
and our Grandfather Vincent Gerald who married Alma Rigney (lived Sydney Australia). Family details known!

We have tracked their life journeys in America 1915-1930's, their marriages (some), their children (some) and their passing (some).

We have the death dates for William James, Nora, Austin & Eleanor (and their son Vincent).

Most of the information so far for the American family side is via Passenger Lists and Census, Social Security which has been fantastic

Is there a way of locating birth and marriage index details (mostly would be Mass. and NY)for USA for 1930-current so we can find 2nd cousins and extended family?

If anyone has knowledge of, or is part of these families (UK or USA families) we would love to hear from you (and we will reply!)

As we are new to this family history exploration, please forgive if we ask too many questions!!!

Thank you very much.

If you are looking for the name McGinn
The most common county in Ireland of the name is County Tyrone, although you may find some in County Down and County Monaghan, all these counties are in Ulster which is the Northern Part of Ireland.
THESE ARE THE BEST LINKS TO TRY.

In the days of the Irish Clans, Names originated from other names.
All over county Tyrone the name McGinn is very common, The main town is Omagh.
My Grandfather, Francis McGinn, left Trillick which is a small village between Omagh and Enniskillen in county Tyrone, to come to Ballycastle County Antrim. This is in North East Ireland. Where he married and settled and he and his family still live. In Ballycastle there is now 35 McGinns. My name is Roisin and Francis McGinn is my Grandfather.
My great grandfather Charles McGinn, who was married to a Catharine - born c/a 1869 in Ireland, lived in Philadelphia with his wife and five children. My father, whose mother Mary died in 1935, was raised in foster homes and lost track of his maternal relatives. In speaking with former neighbors it appears they were both from the North and came to Philadelphia in the 1890's. Does this sound like anyone you know?

Looking to connect with reserachers / descendants of the following McGinns in Montana.

McGinn, John b. about 1810 d. after 1870
Spouse(s): unknown, Mary (b. about 1810 d. after 1870)

Children: McGinn, John (b. about 1839 d. Unknown) *born Missouri
- McGinn, Felix Edward (b. 08-14-1876 d. after 1930) *never married
- McGinn, John O (b. 02-1879 d. This seems suspect based on travel routes of family 1839-1860 (Missouri 1839 > Nebraska 1860 > Montana 1870).

Residence
Date: 1860
Location: St. John's City, Dakota County, Nebraska
Fact Details: Age of 50 living with wife Mary and sons John, Francis & Phelix
Source: 1860 census
Notes: Dakota County is located in the extreme northeast corner of Nebraska, with the Missouri River flowing on the north and east borders.

In 1855 Father Trecy left Gerryowen, Iowa with 60 pioneers and settled north of Jackson where they established St. John City. Almost half of the settlers died during the following, severe winter. Some of their descendants still live in this area. St. Patrick's Catholic Church was built at St. John in 1856 and destroyed by a tornado in 1860. Because of the unpredictable river it was rebuilt about one mile south. The church is now located in the town of Jackson. St. John city has since disappeared.

'St. John's City,' established in 1856, was one of the very early settlement along the Missouri River. The site, however, did not prove to be a good one, as the unruly Missouri was prone to flooding and changing its course every now and then. The river had already cut away some of the land on which the town stood when a tornado came roaring down the valley and destroyed nearly all the buildings in the town.

The people, quite dismayed by their misfortune, moved from the valley. Some took farm land to the east while others established a new town farther south. This became the town of Jackson.

Occupation
Date: 1860
Fact Details: Mason
Source: 1860 US census

Residence
Date: 1870
Location: Jefferson City, Jefferson County, Montana
Fact Details: Age 60 living with wife Mary and sons Francis & Phelix/Felix
Source: 1870 census
Notes: Jefferson county is located in southwestern Montana and was established in 1865. Jefferson City was named after President Thomas Jefferson by Lewis and Clark. The town began as a stage stop for passengers and freight between Fort Benton and Virginia City. The first post office was established in 1866 with William Rutan as postmaster. In early years, this area yielded millions of dollars in gold and silver.

Death
Date: After 1870

Occupation
Date: 1870
Fact Details: Farmer
Source: 1870 US Census
MCGINN AND SURNAME VARIATIONS, MCG/MCQ/MCK

Hello fellow McGinns in the USA and hopefully a few in Canada and across various ponds!?

First, I am a member of Scott Kendell's well managed "McQueen Surname Project" ( Relative Genetics.com )and I would srtongly encourage all of you to join Scott by submitting a simple cheek swab for Y-DNA analysis to add to the database and our knowledge of McGinn roots. (Must be direct McGinn/variants descendent, male line.)

Providing a Y-DNA sample is a selfless act of kindness aiding us all in our research.

So come and join this informative venture!

I have been shown to be a close match to direct descendents of one Robert Douglas McQueen of Crawford County Pa.
Robert lived in the early to mid 1800s and he received a Wisconson land grant for his military service during the war of 1812-14 fighting for the USA .
That is all I know of him.
Normally a match of this sort involving a diferent surname would not mean much other than maybe random selection.
BUT "McQueen/McQuin are definitely variations that could have evolved into present day McGuin(n)/McGinn spelling.

I would be interested to know if any of you have run across this or other spelling variations in your own family background.
Our family legend is that we "may" have had a background in Pa but became Loyalists 1775-1783 and ended up in Canada.
The Name "McQuin" features in some British records and the descendents now use the appelation "McGinn" or "McGinnis" .
There was a "John McQuin" who witnessed for other Loyalists from West Bradford, Chester Cty Pa but he remains ellusive. Land grant in Canada??
Comments welcome!
Rob McGinn, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada
Would like to find parents and grandparents of Patrick McGinn and his wife Margaret Cleary. They lived in Cornonalea at least since 1860--perhaps were born there. They had at least six children, Patrick, Mary, Bridget, Catherine, Annie and James. All but Patrick came to the US in the late 1800s. My grandmother was Annie; she was born in 1879 and arrived in US (port unknown) at the age of 18. I don't know when her parents died, but she kept in touch with the daughters of brother Patrick until she died in 1955. I have seen a photo of brother Patrick's four grandchildren--four girls and a small boy--the inscription on the photo was "Hudsons-Enniskillen". The time frame would be the forties, I believe. Thank you, Jean

McGIN / McGINNIS / MaGIN, Etc.

Hello from Thunder Bay Ontario to fellow McGinns!

Our McGinn name was probably shortened from McGinnes or a variant. (Lots of Variants!)

I am looking for direct male descendents of Timothy MaGin/McGinnis from Northern Ireland who settled in the Mohawk Valley NY prior to the Revolutionary War .

I am hoping to find a fellow McGinnis with proven genealogy who would be willing to join the McGinnis DNA Project now in operation ( Family Tree DNA) .

All anecdotal evidence would indicate I connect to this clan but unfortunately a paper trail does not seem to exist for my branch of the family so the DNA project is important to my research.
I need a known McGinnis descendent for comparison.

British records show the name McGin/MaGin/ and even MacQuin were used with this family but "McGinnis" seems to have become the name in use down through time.
Rob McGinn in Thunder Bay

Edward McGINN, b ca 1865 Ireland, listed as bootmaker on 1891 Liverpool census

I am looking for the McGinn family either in Liverpool, or more likely Ireland. In the 1891 census Edward McGinn Age 26 born Ireland and a bootmaker lived at164 County Road, Civil Parish-Walton on the Hill, Ecclesatic-St. Mary, Parliamentry -Bootle -Liverpool Lancashire

Edward is listed as the brother in law of George Saunders also a bootmaker. I suspect Edward was the brother of George's wife Mary Saunders who may have been Mary McGinn. All were born in Ireland

Edward would have been born circ1865, Mary was born circa 1857.

Of course its also possible that the McGinn's were not realted to George Saunders through Mary's family but through a George's family

Edward would appear to be my great great great uncle, as George's daughter Beatrice was born July 31, 1888 in Liverpool. She married Samuel Hennessey and there Daughter Irene Hennessey was my grandmother.

I cannot find any records for the Saunders or McGinn's after 1891. I did find a record for Alfred Saunders in 1901 as a bootmaker in Walton on the Hill, but did not copy the record and cannot find it again.

I am providing a copy of RG12/2977 of the 1891 Census for Walton on the Hill (Liverpool) Lancashire its page 2 of District 38 and lists them as residents of 164 County Rd in Walotn on the Hill both George Saunders and Edward McGinn are listed as bootmakers

Adelia McGINN / James LOCKHART & McGINNs of Colorado

I have in my hubby's family an Adelia (also known as Delia) A. McGinn b.1841 - County Tyrone, Ireland according to census, who married James Henry Lockhart May 31, 1869 in Central City, Gilpin Co., Colorado.

Adelia and James lived in Boulder County, Colorado for a while and possibly even Jefferson County, Colorado until Adelia moved to Denver in 1882. She died in Sept 1895 in Denver and is buried in Fairmount Cemetery in Denver. They had four children.

There is a James and Julia McGinn family in Boulder County, Colorado and I was wondering if Adelia might have been related to them in some way.

Is there anyone out there that can help me with this family? I would certainly appreciate it if there is. Thanks - Anita

Daniel McGINN, Also Known as McGENN (father Philip McGINN)

Hi all. I have hit a road block in my research. My grandmother's family name was McGENN as far as I knew. I have just found out that this is a "Scottish" spelling and that the actual family name when they emigrated from Ireland to Scotland (Wigtownshire) was McGINN. The spelling was changed later.

Daniel McGINN (also known as mcGENN) was born approx.1803(?) in Ireland. His parents are listed as Philip McGINN and Margaret Girvan(?)

Does anyone have those names in their Irish McGINN tree?

Leeds Co, Lansdowne Cooks and McGinns

John McGinn [ bn 1829, died Mar 25 1905] married Sarah J. Cook[e] " both of Lansdowne" Dec 6 1854 , Rev Barnett , New Connexion Methodist Church by licence . Wit. Ja's Morriss and Rev J. Walker .
I have found an old note I made from the 60s when I interviewed Robert Malcolm , youngest son of John and Sarah J . [1875-1973 ]
Sarah's family in Lansdowne ??.....there were 4 boys . Bob could only remember 3 . Charles , the youngest , Barney ,
and Ed. [Edward? Edgar? ] Ed. went on to become the "Assistant to The King's Printer " in Ottawa . Apparently he had a profound knowledge of Cook[e] and McGinn family history . There may have been sisters as well ?
"Ellensburg" and "Gananoque" are mentioned .
Can anyone connect to this? JRAM

My Last Post re John McGinn

Thanks to help from a reader of my previous post I now know that great Grandfather John McGinn and Sarah J. [Cook{e}] McGinn were In Brockville Ontario for the birth of Emma June 15 , 1868
She is noted in the Wesleyan Methodist register .Emma Married William Donnalier [sp?] , Had a daughter Cecil who in turn married Gordon Ramsay .

We have found a cemetery record for Jesse McGinn , poor little chap was born April 26 ,1871 and died July 23 , 1876 .
He is buried in Orillia Ontario .
So Brockville in 1868 , Orillia by at least 1876 or earlier !

I have hit a brick wall trying to find information on John and Sarah ...IE did he have brothers? Sisters? Who were his/her PARENTS?
John Was born in the year 1826 OR 1829 depending on which census !! He was a shoe/bootmaker by trade .
Again , the Wesleyan Register has my grandfather William born in Oxford township , KENT CO .July 1860... I wonder if that is a mistake ??? Could it be Oxford on Rideau Twp , Grenville Co????? Close to Brockville?
John is supposed to have died in 1907 , Sarah in 1905 . They do not appear to be in Orillia in the 1901 census so I do not know where and when they passed away .
There MUST be a conection in South Eastern Ontario but it sure is elusive!! Where are all you mcGinns out there??

Searching for family connections, Thomas wife Mary and daughters Sarah and Jane came from Ireland to Philedelphia, PA about 1840. Should have been other brothers who came about that time. Thomas stayed in PA until about 1843, another brother name unknown went to Iowa, I believe one brother stayed in PA. Thomas and family moved to Mercer Co, Ill in 1843. Any help on these McGinns appreciated.

Searching with increasing frustration for anything on McGINN. He is probably the g-g-grandfather of my children. He had a relationship with Margaret Dunbar GRAY (details at: http://genealogy.swifts.info/tree/45.htm ) which produced a child Margaret born Glasgow 1905.
Francis was a law clerk by trade according to the birth certificate. He would probably have been born around 1882/3, perhaps in Ireland, perhaps in Glasgow.
Can anyone help ?
Just a list of McGINNs in Glasgow at the turn of the century might help.
Many thanks !

On a recent trip to Dublin, I found my great grandmother Elizabeth McGinn's birth record. Her parents are Peter and Anne (Casey) McGinn. Elizabeth was born in 1893 in Gortlenaghan (dist. of Clonavaddy in union of Dungannon) Co. Tyrone.

The family later moved to Scotland where Elizabeth met John Ralph Mitchell after WWI and sailed to the US through Ellis Island in 1921. They settled in Indiana by 1930.

Any connections would be greatly appreciated!

I'm looking for information on my grandfather's family, but I have limited info. Edward McGinn was born in May 1894, but I don't know what town or county. His parents were Edward McGinn and Bridget (don't know the maiden name). He emigrated to Glasgow, Scotland and was a WW1 veteran of the English army. He married my grandmother and the family moved to the US (NYC), he arrived in 1924 and the rest of the family in 1926. If anyone has any info, it would be greatly appreciated.
HD
Hello, I am looking for descendants of Sam and Mary Ann Webb Bridwell who lived in Portsmouth (Adams County), Ohio. Mary Ann was my Great Grandfather, John Emmett Webb's, sister. Sam Bridwell was related (brother or cousin) to the baseball player, Albert Bridwell. I'm guessing that Mary Ann was born in the 1870's, or so. She died when I was a child - late 1950's or early 1960's. They had several children, and the family operated Bridwell's General store for years. Mary Ann's mother and father were George and Elizabeth Magin (McGinn) Webb. They both died very young, in the mid-1800's, leaving the 2 children to be raised by their Magin (McGinn) relatives. Any cousins out there?
