Hi Thomas:

I have done quite a bit of research on the Longford McGoeys and visited cousins in Lonford who brought me and family to the land they farmed and church where my gg grandparents were married. My research and lots more on the McGoey family is on a web site called magoo.com. Just search the website for McGoey information, as the history of other related names is also listed. Quite an interesting site run by Hugh McGough, a related name.

My group emigrated from Longford to New Orleans starting about the time of the famine.

Good luck!

Mike

I saw your Post today. My name is Thomas McGoey and I am from WI. My McGoey's came from County Longford to Illinois in 1868. What date did your McGoey's emigrate?

Please provide additional information and perhaps we can make a connection. I've done a lot of research on my McGoey family.

Thomas P. McGoey

I am researching my family tree and the McGoey's have been very elusive with information. I haven't been able to trace my lineage back to Longford or Leitrim - just Ireland since I only have records from when they emmigrated to America.

If you have any information that you could send on your family, maybe I would be able to tie mine back to yours.

Thank you in advance for your help!
Colleen "McGoey" Montgomery

Hmmmmm. Perhaps not at the moment. My grandmother's family seems to be rather easy to research; she was Elenore (Ellen, Eleanor) Reardon, born to Michael Riordan and Mary McGoey. The McGoeys are quite a bunch; you can find the ones I found on my tree, McCallister.

Let me know if anything helps you out; this is quite an interesting pursuit!

There are census reports and ship's manifests attached to the tree. I know my great grandmother was Mary McGoey because I have copies of my grandparents marriage license and certificate that verify it, as well as a birth cert for Elenore's brother confirming the names, as well.
Have a blessed evening!

_

My great-great grandparents were Mary D. Sheeran (or Sheerin) and Dominick Coyle. They lived in Manhattan, and had two children (that survived), Mary & John.

I have found the McGoey surname twice during my research, but have yet to figure out the exact relationship:
1) their tombstone names "Aunt Margaret McGeoy" ~ I have a picture on Find-A-Grave http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=co...;
According to the information I received from the cemetery, she was 76 yrs old when she died in August 1897 (buried on 17 August 1897) which makes her date of birth c. 1821.
2) their dtr, Mary Coyle (born 1869) married Bernard Jucker in 1895 in Manhattan and Alice McGoey was a witness.

And lastly, in Mary (Sheeran) Coyle's Will she left $100 each to a James Roirdan (and also a Andrew Allen).

This mystery has been hanging around for years ~ maybe you have some clues!!!

Carol

Blessings! My great-grandmother was Mary E McGoey, married to Michael Riordan, born 1859 and 1864 or thereabouts. They lived in NYC (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens depending on the year). Mary returned to living with her father Lawrence when Michael died.
Her siblings were Catherine, James, Margaret, Mary J, and Alice, from what I have collected.
Anything familiar?
smiles

We have communicated before. It would seem we would have a connection, since both of our McGoey's are from Longford. BUT, so far I have found no connection with New Orleans.

On group of McGoey's appeared to have come directly to Canada about 1820. The next group, about 1850 thru South Carolina.

Since 'my' posting on the magoo site I have been able to tie the two McGoey groups (above) together.

My GG grandparents Peter McGoey and Mary Leavy or Levy were born in Longford 1800 to 1810 and came to New Orleans about 1853. They lived just a few miles from Longford Town in the townland of Caldramore, a place I visited this summer, seeing their actual land and the church, St. Anne's in Curry, they and their children were baptized in. Cathal (Charles) McGoey and his cousin Brendan Quigley, both born in Longford, were our guides. Cathal has done some research on McGoey's of Canada. Much of this information and that of the McGoeys of New Orleans is on the www.magoo.com site.

Alan,

My great-great grandmother, Caroline McLoughlin was born in Leitrim circa 1846. He mother is listed on her marriage record as Catherine McGeoghy . Her father was Thomas McLoughlin Her death certificate lists her mother's name as McGeoghy. Caroline had come to Brooklyn, NewYork from Leitrim when she was approximately 8 years old ( circa 1854 ).

A genealogist had found a baptism record in the Parish of Cloonclare for an Edward McLoughlin , April 1848, with parents Thomas McLoughlin and Catherine McGeoy. I believe that my McGeoghys and McLoughlins came from Cloonclare or the adjacent area around Manorhamilton. I believe that McGeoughy and McGeooghy were a spelling variation of McGoey.

Have you ever seen the name McGoey spelled as McGeoughy or McGeoghy?

Ed

hello, I am looking for these two people. She would have been born abt 1820/30's and so would he. They had 11 children together and I desend from Edward. I know my Edward was born in St.Scholastique Quebec outside Montreal in abt 1850 something. He moved as an adult to South Dakota Lawrence Co. and was a very successful business man. I need information on Mary McGoey..I have no idea where she comes from or who her folks are. I can not find them in Canada census, but not for lack of trying. I do not know how to find them very well in Canada. The counties are hard to figure out. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it.
Hi Mike, I was wondering if you think all McGoeys come from the same place in Ireland. I ask because it seems such an uncommon name, at least to me. Is it a common name in Ireland? I understand the wealthier Irish came through New Orleans and those who were more destitute came through Canda and New York. Do you know of this to be true also? I ask that because my McGoey seems to be in Canada and then on to South Dakota. Thanks, Sallie

As one of the last family of McGoey's that come from Leitirm I have become a bit interested in genealongy and to where all the McGoeys from leitrim have emigrated to as I have heard of the many generations of McGoeys that had to leave as a result of the famine and the hard times that followed.

If you can trace your McGoey name to Leitrim, then we probably have some relation in common as the area in leitrim where the McGoeys lived is a very small area in the North of the county. mainly in the Manorhamilton and kinlough region.

I would be very interested in hearing from any McGoeys that have a family connection form there.

Just answering your question about where the McGoey name comes from in Ireland. There are two locations where the name has origins, one of them is Longford and the other is leitrim. I am from the leitrim McGoey's and sadly have to say that I am one of the last McGoey families from leitrim as most have emigrated years ago.

There is no recent family connection between the McGoeys in Leitrim and Longford, however some say that in the past there definately was.

Just a question for the McGoeys in the states, how do you pronounce McGoey, is it like zoe or more McGoooey, as in my family it has always been McGoey like the pronunciation as in zoe. I am interested as I have not met any McGoeys outside my family.

A good site to get some info is the site magoo.com and yes it is a very uncommon name, even in Ireland

Hi:

Based on the research we have done, it seems that the McGoey name is most numerous in the County of Longford, with Leitrim also having many names. The counties are next to each other in Ireland.

There is lots of info on the www.magoo.com site. I have a history of the New Orleans branch posted and lots of info on the group that came to Philly and New York.

I never heard that the wealthier McGoeys came through New Orleans. As far as I can tell, they were all poor, famine Irish.

Mike

We have been able to trace the family back to about 1800; origin is in the Townland of Caldramore, County Longford, Ireland. The entire history is now published on the www.magoo.com web site under the heading of McGoeys of New Orleans. Also included is listing of all baptisms of McGoeys in the Longford Town area from 1802 to 1870 and information derived from the Tithe Applotment Books by Charles J. McGoey of Dublin. Charles was also of inestimable assistance in compiling the family history. We simply could not have done it without his extraordinary work.

The one remaining mystery relates to the final resting place of Peter McGoey, mary's husband and the root ancestor.

Mary McGoey in 1860 census

More confusion on dates; census listing for Mary includes the following:

Mary, age 48, female, born Ireland, personal estate $50
John, age 21, male, born Ireland
Chs (assume Charles), age 18, male, born Ireland
Charlotte, age 16, female, born Ireland
Peter, age 12, male, born Ireland, attended school that year.

This would mean that Mary was born in 1812, not 1808 as indicated in her obit. or 1803 as indicated in cemetary record.

Charles would have to be born in 1842, not 1845 as obit. stated he was 72 when died in 1917.

Peter is correct in both places; not sure about Charlotte. Cannot find death date for John, but assume he died in Vicksburg during Civil War. Henry is not listed in census.

Daniel and Patrick McGoey are listed in Confederate soldier register. May be brothers who died out of town. No obits.

Peter and Mary Leaving McGoey

Mrs. Peter McGoey's (Mary Leaving McGoey) obit.(4/3/1898) states that she "reached the great age of 90 years, just half of which were spent in this city" was "born in County Longford" and "with her husband (Peter McGoey), who preceeded her to the grave many years ago, she emigrated to this country and settled in this city" (New Orleans).

This indicates Peter and Mary came together to New Orleans about 1853. The wording above "she emigrated to this country and settled in the city" may lead one to believe that Peter and Mary arrived at another port of entry, then came to New Orleans. I can find no record of entry on the ship lists for any port.

The obit. for Charles McGoey (11/28/1917), son of Peter and Mary states that he was native of Ireland, died at 72 years and was resident of the city for 65 years. This would mean arrival in 1852.

The obit. for Henry (8/7/1909), the oldest son, states that he was native of Ireland, died at 81 years and was resident of the city for 54 years. This would mean arrival in 1855.

The date are close but not the same.

Charles was mentioned as member of the Loyal Star Camp, No. 27, B.K. of A. This is also mentioned in the obit. of Maria Shields, the second wife of Charles. Also states that Maria was native of Galway, Ireland and lived in the city for 50 years.

Anyone have any idea what the Loyal star camp was?

Mike McGoey
