McGonagle/Patten/Ward Perry Co., OH 1820s & 30s

The Baptism records from St. Joseph in Somerset suggest to me that there was a connection between these families. I'm trying to figure out what it was! Following is a list of Baptisms in which two or more of those families were involved. All of the Pattens mentioned were children of John Patten and Mary Ward:

William Patten, 24 October, 1824, sponsors Dennis McGonagle and Grace Collins

Thomas Patten, 17 July, 1826, sponsors James Kean and Rose McGonagle

Sarah Patten, 6 January, 1829, sponsors Hugh McGonagle and Mary Quinn

Bernard Patten, 20 February, 1831, sponsors Richard McGonagle and Johanna McGonagle

Anna Patten, 21 July, 1833, sponsors Dennis McGonagle and Grace Collins

April/May 1826 John McGonagle, son of Richard McGonagle and Jane Duffy, sponsors Margaret Ward and Bernard Grimes

11 December, 1831, Michael, son of Richard McGonagle and Johanna Duffy, sponsors Hugh McGonagle and Anna Ward

27 October, 1833, (the spelling is terrible on this one so I'm going out on a limb a bit) Charles, son of Roger McGonneccel and Johanna Dew, sponsors, John Patton and Rosa World. I'm guessing that's meant to be Richard McGonagle and Jane Duffy and that the female sponsor is Rosa Ward. I noticed a lot of other butchered spellings in that section of the records.

20 January 1834, Sarah, Daughter of William Ward and Anna Jordan, sponsors James O'Kean and Mary Patten. I suspect this is the James Kean who was the sponsor of Thomas Patten and who, I believe shows up in another record as a parent with Rose McGonagle.

I would be so grateful to hear from anyone who can shed some light on this!

Thank you very much for your reply! You've given me several leads to follow! I might just start a new thread listing the first names of those sponsors. I figure, if there is a connection, there's got to be someone out there who's stumbled over it at one time or another!

Hi, Cathy,

I don't know how I misssed this old thread on the McGonagles of Perry Co, but thanks to your post, the whole thread came to the forefront!

My husband's family is related to the McGonagles there in the late 1800s. Thanks to some of the material that Lorna Shaw shared with me years ago, I've posted my bit of the McGonagle line (back to the 1830s in OH) on my rootsweb WorldConnect database, if you'd like to look it up there. That way, you could explore the other surnames linked to this family and see if there is any tie to the many surnames in your own family.

It might help if you could post, here, some of the first names of the McGonagle sponsors you were referring to. I noticed several of the other people responding to this thread are also long-time Perry County researchers, and you might benefit from their input, also.

I recently posted an explanation of my family's link to the McGonagles on my blog post at http://afamilytapestry.blogspot.com/2012/01/wedding-party.ht...

You are welcome to take a look there, also.

Best wishes as you ferret out any connections with this line!

Just stumbled upon this old post. If you're still working on the McGonagles, would you please contact me at caph1952@gmail.com ? Though I haven't quite figured out the connection, I'm interested in this family as several of my Patten ancestors who were Baptized at St. Joseph in Somerset, Perry, Ohio had sponsors who were from that McGonagle family.

Thanks
Cathy Patten Haar

Hello, just browsing and spotted your message re McGonagles of Owey island, I think the Fanny you talk of is my grandmother, married to James McGinty and lived most of their lives in Letterkenny where they are both buried, I met great aunts Anne, Grace and Mary in 1980, they were all living in Kincasslagh also there was Annes son Andy who I beleive is still there. Anne had spent some time in the US but I dont know when she went back to Ireland. I was in Donegal last year, two of my dads sisters and one brother still living there, hope this is of interest, regards, Andy McGinty, Christchurch, New Zealand.

A lot has changed since 2008! I still do not know if Patrick and Eunice Gill emigrated to Boston. But I just found sisters to Mary McGonagle here in Boston. One being Eunice who died in 1880 and the other Elizabeth (who married a McGonagle)and died in 1877. Mary Ellen Gill turned out to be Mary Eleanor Gill( Married Frederick R Steward) and she was from John Gill's second wife Mary Shallow.I thought I found a Patrick McGonagle, brother to Mary, but lost him in my search last night. Eunice Gill was brought back to Ireland at age 3 and returned to Boston in 1896 only to return to Ireland in 1907 to die of TB. If any of this sounds familiar please reply.
thanks

Ryan,
My ggg-grandfather was Hugh Maragay / Maraghy / Margey of Donegal (parish of Culdaff, town of Moneydarragh). He was married to a Bridget McGonigal. I have not been fortunate enough to find much on either of them. Their son, Michael, is my gg-grandfather and immigrated to the USA (Boston) first in 1860, and then again for good in 1872. I am guessing Hugh to be born in the second decade of 1800, and Michael born around 1840. Hugh is in the tithe applotment books of 1827 in a similar location in Moneydarragh.

If you have any records of Hugh or Bridget, I would be very interested.
Mike

Her parents were Patrick and Mary McGonagle. Paternal Grandparents = Sean and Bridget "Biddy Ruah" (Doherty) McGonagle. Maternal Grandparents = Owen Kelly and Susan (Doherty) from Gortfab.

Bridget was one of 14 Children, and crossed the Atlantic to Boston in 1911 and had her 15th birthday on the boat. She gradually brought six siblings: Susan (1899-1987), Patrick (1900-1982), Theresa (1905-1987), Celia (1908-1982), Edward (1904-1993), and I think Anne (1901-1974) to Portland Maine. She and her sister Susan married two brothers: Patrick Henry Conroy and Mark Joseph Conroy of Bunowen, Ballyconneely, Cliften, Gallway, Ireland.

I am looking for information on all of these siblings both here and in Ireland. If anyone can help that would be appreciated.

Hi Claire,

Yes he did. His mother, Brigid Carrick, died in Glasgow in 1909. After that date William and Ellen went back to Strabane. However, US LDS Records indicate that William definitely emigrated to America and died in Florida in 1964. He would only have been 16 years of age in 1911. The William you are referring to is no doubt one of the many Edward and William McGonagles in the Strabane area that makes it very difficult to tell one family from another. He may have been one of the Lagavittal or Stranisk McGonigles, who appear to have been fairly close relatives of my family.

In the 1911 census I have been able to trace my great great grandfather, Edward McGonnigle (as he spelt it to the census takers) living at Drumgauty, Dunnalong, at the age of what he reckoned was 76 (he was nearer 72). He was also at the same address in 1901 when his name was McGonagle. His wife, Ann Hegarty, died between 1901 1nd 1911.

Ellen stayed with her grandparents, the Carricks, at Magirr, Strabane, and Edward, the second born son, appears never to have left Ireland, but stayed with his grandparents at Magirr.

I cannot work out what happened to either Edward, who may have been infirm, or Ellen, who was referred to as Nellie. I read somewhere that an Ellen McGonagle was married in Dublin in 1935, but couldn't find any more details, and have now forgotten where I read it!

The Gormleys referred to in the other post may have been Eugene Gormley, who had a newsagents shop in Main Street, Strabane in the 50s/60s.

Hope the above is of some assistance.

Cheers,

John W

Another thought occurred.

Did the William (*1895) stay in or go back to Strabane?
Reason I ask is there is a William McGonagle, aged 27 on the 1911 Census as head, living with Bridget McGonagle (my gr/grm) and her 4 children: Annie (my gran); Rosie; Jeannie and James. They are lodgers....

You can access the Irish 1911 census now online as well as the 1901 census.

Best wishes,
Claire

Hi Claire,

It took me a while but I found them. They were originally from Glenmornan, but most of them moved to Strabane town towards the late 19th Century. They are definitely McGonagles with Carrick relations from Castlefinn just over the border in Donegal. My grandfather was baptised Michael McGonigle in error, it should have been McGonagle. He was born on 28th September 1898 in Strabane to William McGonagle and Brigid Carrick. He had two older brothers, William (1895) and Edward (1897) also born in Strabane. The family moved to Glasgow where another three children were born. I can now trace back to Edward McGonagle, born about 1840, who married an Ann Hegarty from Holly Hill, Glenmornan, in 1865.

All I need to do now is to trace my Walker side from Broughshane, Ballymena.

Thanks again,

John Walker

Hi,

My name is John Walker (aged 56). I was born in Glasgow but I now live in Hawick, Scotland.

My grandfather was Michael McGonagle, born about 1898,in or near Strabane. He had two brothers, Hugh and Daniel, although there may have been more brothers and/or sisters. I believe that the family, or at least elements of them, emigrated to Dundee, Scotland about 1900. However, they subsequently moved to Glasgow.

Problem is that there are a lot of McGonagles in and around Strabane. The spelling "McGonagle" is commonly used throughout Donegal and Tyrone, with the more usual "McGonigle" being used elsewhere in Ireland. Sadly, I have lost touch with all elements of my grandfather's family (he died about 1967 in Scotland). His wife, my grandmother, was Agnes McGrath, born 19/09/1900 in Scotland, but of Irish parentage. I have no idea what part of Ireland the McGraths came from.

If any of the above information rings any bells with you please feel free to get back in touch.

Kind regards,

John
My grandfather Joseph was born in Drumcondra in Dublin. My grandmother was from Strabane in Co. Tyrone.
His father William and her mother Bridget were brother and sister and from the townland of Leckpatrick in Strabane. Their father William and their mother Rose Boyle were also from the townland of Leckpatrick, Strabane.
Has anyone else come across these McGonagles?

O Have you checked into the dna projects? They help in
making family connections from generations past. There is already one started but we need as many McG's (spelled several different ways) to join.
email wallflower2@comcast.net Cheers.

Hi Ryan,

It's been some time since your posting but here goes......
3 of my grandparents were from Owey island. My grandfather Owen married Anne (also nee McGonagle). I know that Anne had spent some time in Bayonne, NJ as my aunt had a picture of her as a 5 year old in the US (this would have been about 1906). Anne had sisters Gervaise (who I think was a nun in the US), Grainne, Mary and Fanny and a brother (Joseph, I think ?) who was a priest.

My great grandmother came from County Donegal and went to Boston. She must have been one of those young, single girls. She met my great grandpa when they were both working in a hotel together. They eventually ended up in Los Angeles, which is where I am now.

Hi Cheryl, I see you've seen an old query of mine. I think you must be Bob's daughter--we've been in touch before, I think. I'm Clyde's daughter Lorna, and I've now worked out how the Burnses and Hauses are related. Michael Burns of Galena IL married Cora Ellen McGonagle as his second wife, after Annie Connor died. (Annie Connor was the sister of Edith Connor, Dr Thomas' wife)
One of the daughters of Michael Burns and Cora McGonagle was Rosemary, who married Glenn Hause. they lived near Detroit and were friends of Charlotte and Clyde.
Clyde's brother John Francis was always known to us as Bill, heaven knows why. I didn't know his official name when I made that posting.
