Re: "Terrible" Terry McGovern, Boxer

Hi Dalton, I'm hoping you might be able to help me with my research... I'm researching my family tree and much to my surprise, my family did not immigrate directly to NYC, but began their lives in the US in the New England states. I am trying to find out if there is a connection between the family of "Terrible Terry" and my McGoverns. I have Thomas McGovern, said to be from Ireland, married to Bridget Marie Foley, whose children were Terrence, Mary Ellen and Catherine McGovern. They lived in Manhasset, NY. They were related to Sullivans, and possibly O'Sheas, Regans and Fitzgeralds. I have to see if I have Thomas McGovern's info, but he would be my great grandfather, and so I'm thinking he was born in the 1870s or 1880s. My Terence McGovern's descendents tell me that it was family tradition to alternate first-born male names between Thomas and Terence, and many of the Terence's we had used the nickname Lawrence. I'm thinking cousins, not necessarily direct line. Let me know if you have a family tree that might help me sort this out. Your Terence's hospitalizations and death match a family story that I haven't otherwise been able to find in the documents.
Thanks!
Colleen

Desperately looking for my McGOVERN uncles from Manhatten –Queens-Bronx

I have been trying for many years now to find my gr-uncles who were born around 1900 in NYC. I found some ancestor and some descendant but still missing two gr. Uncles from that time period. If anyone can help or give me suggestions, greatly appreciated..

My GGf was Thomas Frank McGovern and he was born in Peekskill NY in 1859.. His parents(Peter and Elizabeth Smith McGovern) were from Ireland and around 1840 they came to the US and settled in PEEKSKILL NY. Thomas died in NYC in 1919 and He was a telegraph operator in NYC according to the census. Thomas’s wife was Mary Conaty,(a dau of Thomas and Margaret Conaty from Peekskill), who died in 1909. Both are buried in PEEKSKILL NY, in McGovern family plot. None of their children or descendants (except Margaret Conaty) are buried there.. we've looked and talked to the cemetery people.. nothing..

In case this helps, Rev. Msgr. Stanislaus McGovern(1894-1984) from St. Michaels Parish in Flushing NY was a nephew of Thomas F. McGovern

Thomas and Mary had 4 sons according to the 1900-1920 census.. Family was living in NYC according to the census..

They were:

#1. Thomas Frank McGovern b. Oct.1889 NYC. Distant relatives tell me his wife was named Sadie
On the 1920-30 Bronx NYC census, I found a Frank and Sadie/Sarah McGovern.

Frank McGovern b. 1890 NYC
Sadie/Sarah L. (wife) b. 1892 NY
Thomas McGovern (son) b. 1915 NYC
Nellie Patterson b. 1906 NY (listed as cousin in 1920)
Anna Craig b. 1897 NY (listed as boarder in 1920-1930)

In 1930 they were living on WEBB AVE, in the Bronx.

I cannot find Thomas F. McGovern b. 1890. Is anyone related that might be able to help me..??

#2 John Joseph McGovern b. Dec. 1891 NYC. John J. McGovern died in 1932 and was member of CO E. 307th Infantry and his death notice was listed in the NYT. He was survived by his brothers: Thomas, Edward and Charles. I found a will info published in the NYT..
.. McGovern, John J. (March 25, 1932) Estate, $275. To Charles M. McGovern, brother, 2512 E. 66th St. Other heirs, two brothers. I am unable to find his death cert. so wondering if he was on Active Duty with the Army and died out of state?? If I get a copy of his will, will it tell me where he was went he died?? John is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Astoria with his brother Edward.

#3. Edward Vincent McGovern b.Feb 1894 NYC. EDWARD married prior to 1930 and was living with his wife and family in 1930. Edward died in 1955 and his death notice was published in the NYT. He was survived by his wife, Katherin(nee Kane), and dau: Loretta, Dorothy, and Patricia. He was also survived by his brothers Thomas and Charles. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery Astoria, in McGovern/Kane plot. Edward was a plumbing contractor for NYC / Rikers Island. There are several articles in the NYT regarding him filing bankruptcy notices. His company was known as Edward V. McGovern Corp.

#4. Charles Morris McGovern b.Oct 1897 NYC. I cannot find any info on Charles. I believe he was still alive as of 1955 and I think he was working for the State. Found a letter in the NYtimes from a Charles M. McGovern in regards to state workers salary. So not sure if it is him or not..

"SO" .. I am unable to find Thomas Frank Jr. or Charles Morris after 1920. No clues about them except they were alive as of 1955.. and I think they were living in NYC..

I've check all those listed in the SSDI by name and date and not able to come up with a match..

I am trying to determine whether these two men(Peter E McGovern and Joseph F McGovern) who were killed in WWII were the sons of Francis McGovern and Bridget(Tierney) McGovern of Springfield, MA. I have confirmed that they are from Hampden County which is Springfield but I haven't been able to find anything beyond that.

Hi there! I know this reply is about 10 years late, but I believe your great grandfather philip mcgovern (thomas's father) was my great great grandfather's brother. Making your grandfather and my great grandfather uncles. I have lots of info and photos on the McGovern clan that stayed in Ireland. Peter Mcgovern (your grandfather's cousin), went onto have a daughter, Maura McGovern who is my grand mother!

Contact me if you are interested in hearing more!

Patrick born abt 1830 in Ireland married to Margaret (maiden name unknown) had a daughter Margeret who married a man last name Phillips and finally had John Andrew Phillips my great great grandfather. I really do not have much more info than that. Hoping to find a connection.

Are you fionadeb? You didn't give your name. Good to hear from you, none the less.
Your Grandad would have been our Uncle Johnny, whom I don't remember meeting but I think somewhere I have a photo of a university graduation of one of his sons, your Dad?
I remember meeting Uncle Paddy, when he lived in London.
Uncle Freddy, I only met once, at my Mum's funeral in 1980. Nor did I ever meet, Jerry (Jeremiah). There was also Tommy, who I think lived in Tralee with his mother. I met Aunty Katie and her husband Johnny when I went to Tralee in 1964.
We also have a cousin Helen, daughter of Auntie May, who has now returned to live in Tralee. I have a large photo of the family, I am looking at it now, taken in about 1918, to judge by my Mum's apparent age. Originally it was in Auntie Katie's house in Tralee. We must have acquired it after she died. My Dad had it until he died in 2000. If I had an address, I could send you a copy.
By the way, my wife Pauline and I live in Bognor Regis,
West Sussex. Rosaleen and Eileen both live in Emsworth, which is about 14 miles along the coast.
all best wishes, Patrick, Paddy or Pat!
patrick_hastings@sky.com

We are the children of Ellen Mary Josephine McGovern and her husband, George William McKay Hastings. We know little of our Irsh granparents, as John McGovern died befor we were born and we rarely saw our grandmother. I have a somewhat damaged photo of their family. Please let me know who is making this enquiry..probably a relative?
I came across your entry following up on my finding a record of the 1898 Tralee marriage on the website Irish Genealogy.
Patrick Hastings

That could be him, but I think they probably stayed very near the Steubenville, OH and WV boarder area. Maud was born and married in Steubenville, their baby was born there, too. Then she lived in Weirton with my grandmother Grace Newarell and she died in West Virginia, right next to Steubenville. Ya never know, though! I'll check it out. Thank you!

Hi,

Yes, I had that record, too. The only thing I know about them is that they were married, had a baby who died just after he was born and then she was still going by Maud McGovern on the 1920 census, but he is nowhere to be found. I have Maud's death record from 1921 and even contacted the groundskeeper for the tiny cemetery she's buried in. I visited there in December and sadly couldn't find her headstone.

Do any other states have vital records online the way WV does? It sure would make research easier!

Thanks,
Shelley

Go to wvculture.org Select Deaths search. Put in McGovern & all counties. I find that the fastest way to get into the database. Often when I put more data into the search boxes, it tells me no records when I know they are really there. You will see Mauds' death certificate & registration images. No Andrew here, but it says she is married on certificate. If the undertaker is still in business, they may have more info. If not, some one may have taken over the books, either another undertaker or the historical society. Write them. You might want to look at all the records shown by clicking on View the Record Image in blue type & underscored @ top of coversheet page to see all the details. You might want to see the births & marriages as well as there aren't many McGovern listed. I was born McGovern, of the Red Oiney/Ow'ny line, settled Port Richmond, Phila.-- J.
Hi mebateman,

Thank you - I did have these records from the WV culture website. Unfortunately, I still don't have any other knowledge of Andrew McGovern or where he went after their baby died.

Also, Maud's death certificate has several errors. James R. Haley was her son, not her father and her mother was Anna J. Boyle.

Anyone else know anything about these people?

Thanks!
Shelley
Andrew McGovern of OH or WV

Hi All,

I am searching for information on an Andrew McGovern who married a woman named Maud Haley (nee Thompson, 1881-1921) sometime around 1908. They had a baby named Joseph who died a few days after he was born in Ohio in 1909. By 1920, Maud was living in Weirton, WV with her son from her first marriage, James R. Haley, my great-grandfather Charles Newarell and my grandmother Grace Newarell (Maud's much younger half sister - their mother died in 1914). I am assuming Maud and Andrew McGovern divorced, but I suppose he could have died. I cannot find them in 1910.

Does anyone have any information on an Andrew McGovern or Maud Thompson-McGovern?

Hi Ulilla, Yes that's correct. My aunt May was in America, Long Island, I think. She was home when I was about 18. I remember her coming. Thomas was my grandfather and Farrell was my great grandfather. We lived in the home place in Tullinamoyle. Not many records about from that time. Margaret.
