I am at the start of tracing family history. My great grandmother was a Mary McGowan who married John Nicholson from Sligo and moved to Glasgow where they both died within a short time of each other leaving 5 children. The boys went to Sligo for a short while, whilst the two girls (mary and bridget) were sent to family in New York (possibly New Jersey). Bridget's name was changed to Elizabeth, and she later married to become Elizabeth Hart. Any informaton would be helpful.

James is shown in 1790 census in Dutchess Co, but but was shown on tax rolls in Circleville (Orange Co) by 1803. Family lore says that he lived briefly at New Prospect (near Pine Bush) before settling in Circleville.

I believe James' father was John. I also care for a gravestone from 1807 for a "Maria McGowan" who MAY have been his wife.

Any hints or insights would be appreicated

McGowans have appeared in research on both my mother's and father's families. The names I have are:
John
Johanna
Edward
Helen
Mary
Catherine
Ellen
Mary
Most of them were baptismal sponsors for family members around the turn of the century. I'm trying to find out how they are connected. Please e-mail me privately at mcp7160@aol.com. Thanks, Pat

McGOWAN's IRE > SCOT, 1820s-1850s

Hi,

I have various McGOWAN's that emigrated from Ireland to Scotland in 1820s & 1850s, which I would like to post here, in the hope that somebody recognizes them.

Margaret McGOWAN, b. c. 1821 Ireland married Thomas DUFFEY, b. c. 1821 Ireland. They possibly came from Co. Leitrim, Ireland. Around 1844, they emigrated to Scotland.
Children:-
- Catherine DUFFEY, b. c. 1843, Co. Leitrim, Ireland
- James DUFFEY, b. c. 1845 Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland

The family are listed on the 1851 census for Strathaven/Avondale, Lanarkshire, Scotland. They share their house with the McCUE family:-
- James McCUE, b. c. 1826 Ireland, possibly also from Co. Leitrim
- Rose McCUE (nee McGOWAN), b. c. 1829 Ireland.
James McCUE & Rose McGOWAN were married in 1849 in Strathaven/Avondale, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

There is also, it looks like Linda McGOWAN, who was a witness in 1856 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland at the wedding of Hugh McCUE & Helen GRADY. The other witness was John GRADY.

There are a couple of McGOWANS listed in Barony poorhouse, near Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland on the 1881 census:-
- Rose Ann McGOWAN McCUE, may be the above with the wrong age, listed as occupation: washer, age 68, b. Ireland
- Isabella McGOWAN, age 71, b. Ireland

Is anybody else researching McGOWAN's (also sometimes spelt McGOVAN) who emigrated from Ireland to Scotland around 1820s-1850s?

Thanks.
Michelle

John McGowan (1885 KS newspaper article) d: 1885

(newspaper clipping)

Killed By Electricity.

The Fate of a Man Who Recklessly Handled an Electric Current.

John McGowan, a molder, with two friends, stepped into the electric-light works last evening, and obtained permission from one of the men in charge to go through the works. McGowan declared that he knew considerable about electricity and it’s working. They entered the generator room from the engine-house and going over the northwest corner of the room stood before a thirty-light dynamo. They stood before the machine for a few minutes, when McGowan was observed to bend down and reach out his hands. Instantly he was drawn close to the generator and did not utter a sound. He was dead. In the front part of, and well under, the dynamo, are two brass rods about fourteen inches long. To reach these, one has to make a special effort, as other parts of the machine protrude beyond them. They are known as the positive and negative rods, the former receiving from the generator the electric current and conducting it to the insulated wire, which carries it out to all the lamps in the circuit belonging to the machine. The negative rod receives the current from a similar wire that returns it from the lights and is thereby conducted back into the generator. The circuit is thus made complete. These two rods spring from a cylinder on opposite sides when they are about four inches apart. Then they extend downward forming a cone and are nearly two feet apart at the widest point. McGowan caught hold of the positive and negative rods and was killed as quickly as he did so. Instead of going out over the circuit the electricity took the shortest route, and was passing out of the generator to the positive rod where McGowan’s right hand was, and on through his body to his left arm and back to the negative rod and into the machine, and so on around. One of McGowan’s friends attempted to sieve him.

“For God’ sake, don’t do that or you’ll be killed instantly,” shouted Engineer Wagoner as he shut down his engine and, in his excitement, pulled the plug in the switch-board which breaks the electric current. This last act could have been of no benefit to McGowan, even if he were not already dead, as he was at the dynamo and had formed a complete circuit before the switching-off point was reached. The contraction of the muscles of the body was so great that his legs and arms were drawn out of shape and his head was drawn forward so that the chin pressed tightly against the chest. As soon as the engines could be stopped and it was considered safe he was taken away from the rods. So firm was the attraction that pieces of his skin adhered to the rods. – Syracuse Herald.

The Argosy
Nickerson, Reno County, Kansas
January 24, 1885
page – 5 *** column – 3
I'd like to invite you all to stop by and look at my new genealogy blog. My main purpose is to try to puzzle out problems and get past brick walls, but I have many other ideas for it, such as postiing photos, creating and posting maps tracing families from one place to an other, putting up family group information, posting interesting bits of information. I hope it will be helpful to some of the people who read it, and maybe I'll find some cousins or break down one of those brick walls. The topic will not always be McGowan/Megown-related, as I have more than 75 surnames and will probably be jumping back and forth, but I'll be sure to tag all my posts so you can find things that relate to your research.

It's a bit skimpy right now, but bear with me and keep reading--and please feel free to leave comments!

Judi Hardin
http://genealogicalswamp.blogspot.com

Patrick is my 2nd great-grandfather.

He moved his family to the Birmingham, Alabama area between 1896 and 1898.

Patrick married Elizabeth McNamara, b. 1865 in Pennsylvania. Died between 1900-1920.

They had 9 children:
Mary Ann b.1884
Thomas James b. 1891
Ella b. 1893
Daniel b. 1896
Alice C. b. 1898
Joseph b. 1900
James J. b. 1902
Francis Andrew b. 1906
John Raymond b. 1908

I do have some information on the children's spouses, but my line comes through Ella, so I know the most about her.

Any thing would be helpful! Thank you! ~ Jen

I purchased a McGowan Family Bible which has the following names: Harry Ammon McGowan, May Olive McGowan, John Ammon McGowan, Carion Eelizabeth MCGowan, Harry A. McGowan, May O. McGowan, Walter Edwin Castor. They were all born in Pennsylvania in the late 1800s. I also have some photo albums from some of the decendants of the above mentioned persons from about 1960-1970. I would be willing to give the Bible and the photo albums for no charge to anyone who can reasonably prove they are decendants of this family.

If anyone wants the information contained in these I would be happy to email it to you.

If you are interested please contact me at mattandliz2001@yahoo.com

Leslie Klehammere

His parents and grandparents and various aunts and uncles seemed to move around a bit and are found in Westerly, Providance, and Pawtucket RI, as well as Stonington,Pawkatuck and Groton CT. both according to family lore as well as cencuses. Many of the above are buried together in Stonington , including William 1796/7. If anyone can tie into this or assist me I would appreciate it! Stuck.
M.

McGowan and Gilmartin -New York City

My great grandparents were Francis McGowan and Mary Gilmartin. Both were born in Ireland and I believe were from Co. Sligo/Leitrim/Western Cavan area. Francis, or Frank as he was called, was born in January 1826, and Mary was born in 1840 according to census records. I think Frank's parents were Terence and Elizabeth McGowan and they were probably born c1800, and Mary's parents were Francis and Mary Gilmartin and they were probably born c1815. Frank and Mary McGowan had seven children. They were: Mary, b 1862; Terence, b 1865; Elizabeth, b 1867; Francis, b 1868; John, b 1870; Alice, b 1872; and Catherine (Katie), b 1874. Alice married a Gartland, Katie married an O'Rourke, and Mary, my grandmother, married a Brickner. Also, one of the sons had a son by the name of William.

Frank and Mary Gilmartin McGowan lived on the lower east side of Manhattan in 1867, but later moved to the west side near Columbus circle and the children were still living there in the 1940s.

Need help in locating ancestors and descendants.

McGowan and Dunn in Illinois

Fenton McGowan (born 1821 in Ireland - died 1893 in Decatur, Illinois) married Catherine Elizabeth Lawler (born 1835 - died 1911 in Decatur, IL) both buried in Calvary Cemetery in Decatur, IL. They arrived in the United States in 1866 with three children and settled for awhile in St. Louis, MO. My ggrandfather was one of their children---Thomas McGowan.

Thomas married Elizabeth Dunn in Dalton City, IL. Her grandfather, Peter Dunn, married Mary (Margaret) Dempsey. Peter DUNN, along with brother William and sister Mary entered the US in Boston aboard the Ship Buena Vista on June 1, 1850 so quite a bit earlier than the McGowans.

Peter married Mary (Margaret) Dempsey in Decatur, IL and settled in Dalton City, Moultrie CO. IL. The Dunn and Dempsey Clans were from the northwest portion of County Laois, Ireland.

Dalton City was known as Little Ireland due to the large number of Irish families that settled in the area. I have info to share from Thomas McGowan and Elizabeth Dunn forward but need to fill in many blanks on the early McGowan Dunn line.

Any fill in the blank info will be GREATLY appreciated!!

Kay

Elsie McGowan (McGowen?) and Elsie Sullivan

I am looking for any information that I can find about the following persons:

1. Elsie McGowan (McGowen?), daughter of Mary E. Wilson and Thomas Franklin McGowan. I understand
that Elsie was born about 1907, and the family lived in Remlap, Blount County, Alabama. I do
not know if she married or had children.

2. Elsie Sullivan, or perhaps her name is Elsie McGowan, daughter of Milly Ann Wilson. I do
not know if Elsie was from Milly’s married to Mr. Sullivan, his first name being Daniel? or
Bert?, or from Milly’s marriage to Albert McGowan. Milly Wilson and Mary Wilson are sisters,
and Thomas Franklin McGowan and Albert McGowan are brothers.

We need to get in touch with anyone that has any information about either or both of these Elsies.
We understand that one of these Elsies had information pertaining to a “roll number” of her
mother’s, and perhaps Elsie had a roll number of her own, and possibly other family members,
evidencing proof of Native American heritage. I assume that “roll number” may refer to one of
the various Native American Rolls containing names of persons of Native American descent.

ANY information would be appreciated.
