I can help you with Charles Ebon McGown and Ester Lockhart. She was my great aunt. They had two children, Cleo and Adeline.
She died when the girls were very small My great uncle Raymond said she died from bole hives. I figure it was some kind of allergic reaction. I have not been able to find much about her.
There is extensive information on the web from someone in my family. If you just google Alfonsie Lockhart, you will see Ester's complete history.

Neil,

Do you know where James Patterson McGown (1863) was born and his parents names?

My info as follows:
James McGown II, 13 Jun 1863 Anderston, Glasgow, parents were James McGown I & Mary Inglis m 6 OCT 1862.

James McGown I christened 4 Oct 1840, High Church, Paisley, Renfrew. Parents Peter McGown & Mary Galbreath. They had 6 children, all christened at High Church, Paisley.
Jean 6 Nov 1825, Thomas 20 Jan 1828, Mary 13 Jun 1830, John 15 Dec 1832, Catharine 23 Jul 1835 & James 4 Oct 1840.

I have not yet traced the siblings however, if there is a connection, then it would likely be by marriage to Thomas or John. If you check the High Church records Jean, Mary & John show McGown with an "a" but Galbreath remains unchanged. Just more of a challenge.

Let me know if this connects or not.

Joellen McGown Harche
Houston TX

Death of Mr. McGown

Rev. B. F. Buck conducted the funeral services of Mr. McGown at the home of the deceased Tuesday Aug. 24.

A large number of his friends and neighbors, some of whom have known him for the past quarter of a century were gathered under the trees on the east side of the house. The services were conducted from the porch where the mourners and choir were seated.

Several of those sweet songs that Mr. McGown had loved so well were sung by the congregational church choir. The scripture lesson was taken from the prayer of Moses as found in the 90th psalm “Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations,” and from the words of Christ “Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.”

After the following tribute of esteem was paid to the memory of the deceased “Mr. Alexander McGown was born near Perth Scotland July 24, 1835 and this is the anniversary of his birthday.

When he was eleven years old his parents came to the United State and settled near Avon Fulton County Illinois. Their industry, faith and habits of life did much to civilize the west and make their community what it is today. July 1st 1855 he was married to Miss Clarissa Woods of Avon. To them were born four children three of whom survive him. When Lincoln called for men at the beginning of the civil war Mr. McGown enlisted with the 50th Regular Illinois Volunteers as a musician. It was the soul stirring music from his instrument that helped grant win his victories at Ft. Donelson and Shilo. He came to Kansas in 1872 and settled on the farm where he died. He spent a number of years in railroad service first on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and the with the Hanibal and St. Jo. and lastly as superintendent of water service on the Atchinson, Topeka and Santa Fe. He was brought up as a Presbyterian but there not being a church of that denomination in Avon his family united with a Universalist church. At the time of his death he was a member of the Haven Uneversalist church.

For the past twenty years he has been a member of the A. O. W. and the members of the Haven lodge performed the sad rite of consigning his remains to the silent city of the dead.

Haven Weekly Journal
Haven, Reno County, Kansas
Saturday, August 11, 1900
page – 5 *** column – 2

----------------

Laurel Cemetery
Yoder Township
Yoder, Reno County, Kansas

Alexander McGown – b: Jul 20 1835 – d: Jul 23 1900, father of Ida L.
Carie Mustard is possibly Cary A Mustard, b: Jan 1890, OH., son of S Mustard, and Elizabeth. This Mustard family is from the Scioto and Pike County, OH area.

I don't have much on S Mustard, just 1900 Census, Ohio, Pike, Sunfish, page 8B. Fathers name was unreadable as the census taker wrote over it.

This family is part of the Mustards, that came from Sussex, Delaware, through WVA, to Oh.

Haunted by Two "Allan" McGown from Glasgow

This is starting to drive me nutso :)

My ggg-grandfather's name was Allan McGown, born around 1819 and died before 1847. I have no idea where he came from -- I assume Scotland -- or where he died -- assume Scotland, since that's where his widow was -- and I've looked till my eyes crossed. Allan or Alan is not a common name compared to others and all searches for either of those names coupled with multiple spellings of McGown have yielded nada.

Now, while researching my Grand Uncle, Felix McGlone, I've come across yet another Allan McGowan. Felix emigrated to the USA in 1909 and on the same ship manifest was the name "Allan McGowan" with the same Glasgow address as Felix. They were also the same age, 25, and had the same occupation, compositor. So, chances are they are either related -- from ggg-grandfather McGown? -- or darn good friends.

Does ANYONE have an Allan McGown/McGowan/whatever in their tree, born Glasgow around 1884?

*whimper*

Could you fill me in on your side of the family, brother, sister and their families, and your family. I have a couple pictures of your father and some of James and Susanna. Susanna married John Bower and you are right they are buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Findlay. We have been to the cemetery in Broadway where James is buried.
Please email me at pjdannenbring@aol.com
I am George Franklin McGown's daughter, he was a son of James. I know where he's buried in Broadway and that my Dad, Frank said Sussanne remarried a Brown. I thought she was buried in Findlay, Oh. That is where a lot of them landed. Bert was the chief of police there in the 1913 flood. And Uncle Charlie died there. Not sure of a lot of things, too many years past. Mallie was married to Dan Burns. You have more info than I do. If I can help let me know. My daughters and I went thru a cemetery in Marysville and there were some Bodeys there, too. Edith E. McGown, Blott

Fanny McGown of Indiana

I am cross posting my reply to Michelle's post from the Steward board. We are both looking for parents of Fanny McGown. (Please refer to the original post for details referenced below.)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Re: Steward/Stewart-James P. and Fanny McGown Pellet
Author: Snippy Haines Date: 31 Jul 2004 1:15 AM GMT
In Reply to: Steward/Stewart-James P. and Fanny McGown Pellet by: Michelle Sutton

Fanny McGown is my ggg grandmother. I have listed her descendants at my web site and can only add to your notes that the census in Indiana show she is born in New Jersey. I haven't had time to research this much, but there are McGowns in NY and NJ in the 1790 and 1800 census. Since she first married Richard Pellett, who's ancestry seems to be well known, and he's from PA, I'd look for a connection there.

Now, my grandmother always said, that if we follow the female line back in my family, Georgia Berry - Fanny Wyatt -- Lucinda Pellett-- Fanny McGown-- ... we should hit the sister or niece of George Wythe, governor of Virginia who signed the Declaration of Independance. If anyone succeeds in making this connection, please tell everyone!

PS. Please visit my website and comment if you have time:
http://snippyhaines.home.mindspring.com/

I am looking for info on John McGown from Tn but he moved to Ky & later Indiana. Don't know his birth date but he married in 1830 in Ky. Would appreciate any info on his parents or siblings.
