Patrick McGrath died Dec. 1932 Gort, Galway, Ireland, age 71

My McGrath ancestors were born in Rahoon, Salthill, Galway Urban West. I am trying to find out if one, Patrick McGrath, b. 1861 to Andrew and Judith (Julia) Hackett McGrath, relocated to Gort and died there in 1932. Only way to confirm is to find out parent's names and place of birth.

Would civil death record from 1932 have that info, and more importantly, is it accessible? Or would I have to write to the parish in Gort for burial info? And would they cooperate?

Thanks.

Im really searching for him and back - stuck on his great great grandfather. Figured I'd try another angle.

I don't believe it was me that spoke to you by phone, but I believe we did have a few emails back and forth several years ago. You may have spoken to my Aunt Dolores, or her daughter. I would greatly appreciate any information you have on the McGrath side if you still have it. My email address is judycostilow@yahoo.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

I beleive my Grandmother had a brother John because my Father & Aunt spoke of him. My Grandmother's name Katherine/Katie McGrath who married John/Jono McDonald my father's father on 29th September 1897in Skipton, Victoria, Australia. Katherine was the daughter of Patrick McGrath & Catherine Ryan from Clonoulty Cashel County Tipperray. My Grandmother died in May 1933 and I never knew her. There was another sister in a Convent in West Australia she wrote to my father and his four sibblings in the early 1900s.I still have those letters. I was told the family was large. Hopefully this may be a thread we both are looking for.

Greenleaf, Washington Co, Kansas, Thursday Jan 7, 1937, from The Greenleaf Sentinel: "Frank McGrath was born in New York state, June 18, 1853, and died at his home in the Kimeo community Dec 29, 1936, aged 83 years 6 months and 11 days. As a boy he went to Illinois, later moved to Iowa, and came to Kansas, locating on the farm south of Greenleaf where he spent the remainder of his life.

In 1880 he was united in marriage to Mary Hurly, who preceded him in death about three years ago.
Ok, well I found who I am looking for, but I wonder if anyone is doing research on him? Judge John Mathew McGrath, b. 1863-1865, d. 1942. His death certificate states he was born in Baltimore, MD, but census records say Virginia. His father was John McGrath, and his mother was Katherine Hennessey, both born in Ireland. I was hoping that being a judge, I might be able to find a picture of him somewhere, but no such luck (yet).

They had one child that I know of (also John Mcgrath) who was born in Prospect Nova Scotia in 1865/6. He moved on to Boothbay Harbor Maine (married a Lillian Williams) and eventually moved to Gloucester Mass. I have reached a dead end on both the McGrath and Delair lines here. I have a copy of John Jr's obit, he died in 1956 in Gloucester and it lists the above information. Thanks :)

Thank you for your reply - I'll respond to both your notes here....

yes, I saw records with all three of those spellings for Hanora, and found one marriage record here in Boston for a John McGrath and Honora Murphy, though I have no legitimate way of proving they're the same couple who fathered John W.
Both the records I've found and stories I remember from this or that relative puts John W in the Boston Post Offices, and father of my grandfather Herman.

I had an Aunt Kay (Catherine) who I heard was pretty well nuts at the end, my father Lawrence's sister - if it's the same person we're closely related....

I have been unable to get any definite identification on John and Hanora/Honora/Hannah yet, and the returns from emails I've sent have told me without that, it's pretty much impossible to get much farther. As you said, just too many John McGraths to follow.

I have only a rumor of origins in Co.s Donegal and Fermanagh and absolutely no documentation.

Good luck with your search, I'll have a look at your public tree, than thanks again.

Suggestion - look atthe names on the original census sheets and see how they are spelled rathe rthan how they are translitereated. Hanora is listed as Honora and Hannah is some places in the tranliteration but as Hanora as written in cursive.

There are so many McGrath's it is almost impossible to ensure they are the correct marriage.

I have run into a stun\mbling block researching my father's line as well - McGrath becuase of this.

BTW, this is another long shot, but Mrs. McLoughlin was somehow related to our Beirne/Reilly/Gallagher family and wound up living with them in Orange at the turn of the century. When a child, my dad inherited her 3-story apartment house when she died around 1920. That's because she caught her godson Gene sticking his tongue out at her behind her back!

This is a long shot, but our Margaret McGrath married Patrick Brennan probably in the early 1840s. They were farmers in Kilmacumsy in the Elphin Parish, which was at the far eastern portion of Frenchpark. Margaret died in Ireland, probably around 1856. Her husband and kids emigrated to Orange, NJ. I've been tracing those Brennans, and find that they also lived with John & Delia/Adelia McGrath and their kids in Orange in the 1880 census. Brennans from "Frenchpark" kept coming over through the 1870s onward. I suspect the Brennans and McGraths are cousins.
